Godzilla Minus One
Yessss
Across The Spider-Verse to me is just perfect. Spider-Man is not only my favourite superhero but my favourite character in fiction ever. Seeing this film which basically is all about exploring what actually IS Spider-Man is so special to me.
Is Spider-Man about death and tragedy and moving forward or is he about saving people even though the odds or so stacked against him. I can’t actually answer that. I don’t know. Miguel thinks it’s the former, Miles thinks it’s the latter.
The Spider-Society is actually still using “with great power there must also come great responsibility” as they have the power to ruin the multiverse but are using it correctly to keep it in tact.
Spot is an excellent villain. So unique to Spider-Man films as he gets more and more powerful each time we see him. From being Bagel Boy in the first film to MULTIVERSAL MONSTER!
This film actually makes the first film better. Kingpin is what Spider-Man. Held by the past, wanting to erase it. Spider-Man loses Uncle Ben and moves forward, Kingpin loses his loved ones and moves backwards wanting to change the fate of their lives. Miles is trying to prevent the death of his dad trying to changes the fate of his life but unlike Fisk, Miles is not stealing his Dad from another Universe

Not all of these are for everyone, for sure.
But cinema and art can kind of invite us to go on wild journeys to see past our comfy perspectives.

My favorite film is also Across the Spiderverse. But my full list is a bit different and it was hard due to so many movies I had a great time watching.

Great list Coy! And always love the passion put on display when talking about and reviewing movies. I haven’t seen everything yet but here are my top 5:
5. Talk To Me (amazing pacing and a tight script to keep you locked in. Loved the ending)
4. Oppenheimer (masterpiece. For 3 hours | was locked into everything happening. That bomb scene... chef's kiss)
3. Saltburn (surprise movie of the year for me. Incredibly shot, directed, acted and that third act... wow)
2. Across the Spider-Verse (incredible story, characters and game changing beautiful animation to immerse you into all of it)
1. John Wick 4 (masterpiece action movie. I can watch every Paris sequence on repeat. To be the forth in a franchise and still feel fresh and up the ante while delivering a super satisfying ending was quite a feat)

I totally agree with your love for Across the Spider-Verse. It's the first movie I saw three times in theaters in one weekend and twice in theaters in one day. I don't have a definitive top 10, but Oppenheimer is my #2, and Anatomy of a Fall is my #3. Other contenders in no particular order are Blackberry, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, Past Lives, The Zone of Interest, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Holdovers, Godzilla Minus One, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Nimona, and of course Barbie.
High praise for Spider-Verse. It really might become one of the all time best trilogies.

I 100% agree with your Number 1 pick. It's debatable that there are better-acted films in 2023, but AtSV is such peak performance as a whole, for an animation sequel no less, that no other film came close for me for 2023. If the 1st Spiderverse film was a love letter to Spidey, the 2nd Spiderverse film is a love letter to comics and animation and sequels that's wonderfully packaged into a single movie. If there's one thing my generation can brag about seeing a movie while it was in theaters (in IMAX at that) for the first time, it's the Spiderverse films. Massive props to the whole SV production crew. And Happy New Year to you Coy.

Hey. I hadn't heard of that connection between Oppenheimer and the internet before, but I really liked that. I'm not on social media (except this one, but rarely read comments) so never made that connection myself. It did make me think a lot about how we treat our fellow people though, more than the nuclear scare.

Godzilla Minus One and Poor Things were my favorites but John Wick, Spiderverse, Barbie and Guardians were good too. Abyss Special Edition and Die Hard Anniversary were great theater experiences for my girlfriend and I this December.
