Here's a general question about rebuilding subs.
When you're working on a sub that you can't get the original parts for and are forced to use aftermarket coils or spiders, is that sub ever going to be as good as it was originally?
You're probably going to have different amounts of inductance, weight, suspension stiffness, etc...

That's actually a good question.. I've always thought about this as well.. different MMS seems like it would definitely change specs.. although not Original it seems logical you could also definitely improve a sub for sure.

It depends on the driver, and the availability of soft parts for starters. Any time you change things, even if it is just one part of the driver, it alters or affects it in one way or another. It doesn't mean that it isn't "as good" because everything can be improved upon, to an extent. You may want to increase or decrease moving mass. You may want a more compliant suspension, or you may not. Or, you may want to keep it as close to original as you can. Like with anything you alter, you have pros and cons. Sometimes you just have to measure and weigh the disassembled parts, when you can, to get a close as possible if you want to rebuild it back to near original, when recones aren't available.

@@Chuck_SandersI was hoping you would say that. That's a fair and logical response that makes sense to me. 👍

@@JasonWW2000 Cool man, I'm glad it helps. The biggest issue to deal with, is older subs and drivers. I mean, there is an abundance of parts these days, but only a few people I know of, have older and harder to find parts, and some of those guys are extremely hard to deal with anymore. But, if you talk with enough people that has speaker parts, from all over... you can pretty much find whatever you need to make things works out. Just mad take a little time to get what you need.

Hey, chuck you missed a spot on the basket.,, 😂 A good thing to
Mention. to the comments section is.
When reconing, you need to have the A d a t s Especially if doing multiple woofers and be Meticulous.
If not, they will all perform differently.

Hey Chuck. What area of the soft parts do you see the most frequent failures? Does the VC cook the glue first, or does the coil hit the side of the gap?
Maybe it depends on the manufacturer and listening preference…?

Coil failure is the most common issue I see or have seen over the years. Typically it is thermal failure I see the most. Then it is usually either coil rub or damage from over excursion(bottoming out the coil.) Many times people just ask more of their driver, than it's capable of.

@@Chuck_Sanders Ah ok. Heard my subs making noise the other day. Sounded like bottoming out, not sure.
Hopefully an amp adjustment is all I need, or the subs are worn. Couple years old.

@@milesbachelor8747 probably was unloading and bottoming out, if it had a clatter type sound, and if it's bad enough it'll be loud... And like a ping or smacking on steroids lol. It happens at some point to anyone, Lord knows I've had my fair share of it happening before, lol.

@@Chuck_Sanders Yeah lol. I know it’ll happen eventually, I only hear it on a couple songs. It’s like the subs are trying to reach a low not designed to play. I can hardly hear the note, but feel the pressure.
      Thanks brother.

@@milesbachelor8747 You're welcome bud. Yeah it's probably trying to play below tuning and unloading. Hopefully no damage occurs.
