Beginners guide to starting the Douglas DC-3 from cold and dark in Microsoft Flight Simulator

- The Douglas DC-3 "Dakota" has arrived in Microsoft Flight Simulator as part of the 40th Anniversary update, and it's wonderful! In this video I walk through firing the plane up from cold and dark and take it for a quick circuit. Apologies in advance for the lack-of-talent displayed in landing it, where I almost get into a ground loop. Postscript - a real DC3 pilot got in touch with me and helped me revise the startup procedure - the checklist within the aircraft is **wrong**.
Here's where you can find the checklist:

It turns out the checklist in the aircraft is actually *wrong* - I received feedback from a real DC3 pilot who helped - please take a look at my second flight in the DC3 to find out how we fixed it - ruclips.net/video/jNPb_eo8BDA/видео.html
Every time when I try to take off in a twin engine plane, I yaw off to the left or right and can't ever take off normally. I would like to learn how to properly take off with a bigger plane than a single engine. Do you have a video on taking off with these bigger twin engine planes?
@@RangerHalt907 what you don't see me doing is standing on the rudder a LOT - and then catching the tail as it lifts with massive rudder inputs
Thank you for doing this. I know everyone is raving about the Airbus A310 but I personally think this is such a great aircraft and it is lovely to see such care and attention taken for this aircraft. I have been lucky enough to fly on one of these out of the Bahamas in the 70's. For me this is THE aircraft in this update.
I think several of the aircraft are very good.
I agree
@@jonbeckett I agree however this one I can see myself flying the most
Everyone loves a DC-3.
A310 is only hyped because there is so little airliners currently available especially on xbox.
Although I had some fun with it at night with the first start up.
Everything is pitch black can't see a thing, probably took me 20 minutes of scrolling over various buttons and switches to get her lit up and started.
Went on the tablet and I have no idea what I'm doing with that, but I hit cold start thinking it was a check list and ended up killing everything back to pitch black.
Needless to say I was no longer human, had a darkness come over me that I think if any human tried to approach me it would have been a bad day. Bloody thing. 😂
@@ryanfreebody6881 mm... and because the a310 is a very good free aircraft... not like the a320 of asobo or things like that
That dancing of the DC3 is exactly what you feel in real life. I grew up as a kid in Africa in the 70s and we used to fly a lot with a DC3. (hardly any roads there)
Recently I was fortunately enough to take a DC3 flight again. Low flight around 5000 ft. The plane is sluggish and the turbulence almost feels like a very gentle ride in a slow motion rollercoaster. I think the enormous wing surface also adds to the experience when looking outside. And the sound of those engines!
This plane is so beautiful.
Thankyou for the wonderful feedback!
They got the sound of the radial so good especially when you open up the window while taxing. Can’t believe they added this for free. Thanks for the video
They bought it to give away. It was developed some time ago by Aeroplane Heaven.
Free advice, don't take off with the left window open, she'll get airborne then bank hard left and you'll end up hitting the ground below upside down. 😂
Excellent tutorial. I agree on the fact this DC3 is THE gift of this update. Made some scale models of the Dakota as a teenager and my Dad jumped out of this plane while in the armed forces. The work carried out by the developpers is huge with accurate aluminium reflection, smoke and sounds. Thanks again. But I crashed several times!
It's quite involved to fly, isn't it :)
Jonathan, you have brought back memories! My first flight as a young boy, about 60 years ago was on a Dan Dare DC3 from Lydd in Kent to Jersey. No pressurisation, and I remember a lot of vibration and shaking. Thank you.
That's amazing because as a young boy my first flight was on a DC3 from Charlotte, NC to Chester, SC. I'm 86 now and was 10 or 11 then. Now I can repeat it in Flight Simulator.
@@roywarren6550 Roy, that beats me, as I'm only 68. Dan Dare was a UK airline really called Dan Air. Mind you I remember getting a small blue holdall with Dan Air on it as a free gift, did you get anything stateside? I kept the holdall for years.
@@gordonc5354 It’s been so many years ago I don’t remember anything but looking down to see our Catawba River. It was a private plane that was taking my father down and his country music group to play at an air show.
A vey good break in the bird, wow! Thanks Jonathan!
The dc3 is such a beautiful looking aircraft. So glad it’s flying around today. And Microsoft did an incredible job on this!
Couldn't agree more! - p.s. Aeroplane Heaven made it, as far as I'm aware.
Just made copious notes off of your video and now ready to try and fly this wonderful aircraft.
Without your video I wouldn't stand a chance! Thanks.
Glad I could help! I still have a lot to learn - I think a revised start sequence may be in the offing after some feedback from a real DC3 pilot :)
I particularly like the way this and indeed, all the smaller planes seem to gently rock about on the airfields in those cross winds. Excellent stuff. And yes, the rattle and shimmy in this one too is very cool (assuming that’s not FS Realistic)
Totally agree
Worth noting - I forgot to set the cowl flaps back to "Trail", and the boost pumps back to off once in cruise - it's in the checklist however :)
This was my first plane to own in fsx, I love it and thanks for the start up. Can't wait for more videos on this beauty
Glad you enjoyed it!
I remember the being so excited when the MAAM DC3 was released on FSX. It was the pinnacle of aircraft design in FSX at the time.
It's a beautiful machine, elegant and powerful. One of my all time favorite with the corsair
Brilliant. Thank you Jonathan.
Cheers!
New favourite plane after founding this existed after 8 month of flight sim
Have to say, Microsoft/Asobo really did us proud with these 40th anniverasy aircraft. Th A310, DC3 and DH Beaver were all aircraft I was expecting to pay £££'s for. 👍
Loving the intro's to these planes too, thanks for doing them. Just need an RAF DC3 livery with invasion stripes to go with my Spit and I'm happy 😀
Heh - sounds good :)
Absolutely, they delivered way more than what I was expecting.
no gps in it, right?
@@alexc8920 there are two versions, can be switched in the livery selection. There's classic, the one in the video, and refit, which changes the gyropilot from the main panel to a garmin system.
Its terrific to see such high quality content from MS and Asobo added to our favourite sim for free. For comparison, just look at the appaling Microsoft payware apps you can get with Windows 10 OS and Windows store , its all such junk. Hopefully MS are finally wake up to what quality looks like.
AWESOME TUTORIAL, Finally I have a complete Dc:3 checklist on paper
Oh, it's not complete - it's the "cliff notes" :)
This is great! Thanks for posting this.
You're welcome :)
Great stuff thanks. Tried to take off in this before seeing your vid. I was all over the place.... Different than the MAAM DC3 I was used to in FSX. Loved that. I'm now going to try again!
Have fun!
Thanks, taking it for a spin this weekend. Checklist printed, cheers.
Good luck!
Great video, one of my favorite aircraft. Very distinct in sound. Used to be two that still flew around where I live but I only see one now.
Many thanks!
Thank you for your appraisal... Very helpful... Like you I love the DC.3.... Roger... Pembrokeshire
We’ll done, new subscriber, the aircraft always makes me think of the wonderful scenes in Band of Brothers, how brave they were. Catching up on all your wonderful tutorials. Thanks, regards Stuart
Well done!
So much soul in this model❤
I know what you mean. It's very good.
To say this is free is simply amazing!
It's awesome, isn't it.
Thanks for the great guidance.
Glad it was helpful!
My Favorite prop plane. Ive been very lucky too have worked on these with Mail freight in the UK back in the 80s and early 90s when air Atlantic owned a few. They were night flights so we got to see the blue flames out the exhaust on take off.
Very cool!
Very useful! Been having the same problem getting the right fuel control to off as well. Just tonight found the safety catch for the landing gear handle to work :)
There's a lot to learn - we're only scratching the surface :)
Very useful to fly this stunning aircraft. Thanks for sharing. Nice landing 😄
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow, this looks great. I've been enjoying the DC-6, but have wanted the 3 for a while.
It's great fun :)
That was amazing. Thank you !!!
You're so welcome!
I have been waiting for the DC3 for so long
I'm going to do a proper flight in it tonight at some point - just go for a fly, instead of recording and explaining :)
glad to see I'm not alone. We will master this great bird, for sure.
Heh - getting the steps right was tough. The checklist within the aircraft is ambiguous in several places.
Thank you-this is very helpful!
You're welcome!
Great video,,, I love this plane. Now Im practicing and you are my guide... Thank you again.
You're welcome!
You’ve been busy of late, Jonathan! Thanks for your videos.
I'm still busy! lol
Short and complete tutorial for starting this nice bird
It's actually wrong though - the official checklists are wrong. I had feedback from a real DC3 pilot, and recorded a short flight (also on the channel) which illustrates the "correct" way, and shows some really strange automatic behaviour of the levers in the cockpit.
@@jonbeckett Yes but its good start of start 😉😉
Briliant tutorial, thanks! :-)
You're welcome!
Thanksss for the video and the checklist, you help a lot
New sub
Happy to help!
Going through the speed range, the aircraft either noses up or noses down quite a lot... upto 80 mph, it'll want to nose up, above that it'll nose down on you (on throttle open fully). This happens with flaps and gear up as well. As you try and control it with the throttle, under 90mph, you'll have throttle control over the pitch quite a lot, over 90, it'll only nose down on you. This all with pitch neutral. ;)
Great video, much appreciated to get this puppy from cold and dark!
Old aircraft tend to do that, don't they :) That's why we have elevator trim. I didn't mention during the video - I was on the elevator trim a LOT :)
Cool video and thanks ! 😁👍
No problem 👍
This is the plane I was looking forward to buying.....but now it’s free, happy days !!
It's great fun to fly :)
Thanks for the DC3 videos. I’m an Ice Pilots fan, so looking forward to flying this plane. Probably visit Yellowknife for a few flights.
Have fun!
The DC-3 has been a long time favorite of mine in MSFS. Very happy to see them do it justice. I always thought the default DC-3 in previous versions was garbage.
Yeah - it will be good to look at it with somebody who has flown one - to see what they think of it. There's a lot of divergence from the real aircraft in the checklist in the plane. I need to record again, trying the real-world methods of starting the engines.
FS2004 and FSX DC-3 was very fun but absolute garbage. No detail anywhere.
Here's the link to the checklist - bit.ly/jonbeckett-msfs-checklists
Thanks - it will be finding its way into my copy of SimEFB.
@@davidwitherow900 You're welcome :)
@@jonbeckett amazing! ...well done for adding the check lists ..i don't know any other reviewer/ content creator doing that!

@@sascenturion I only bother for the more complicated aircraft :)
That is not how you start the real DC-3 or any other Radial Engine.
Saw one of these fly fairly low over my house recently. One of my favs…only tried a little flight so far and it was incredibly difficult to climb. Can’t wait to give it a proper go
Just keep the climb shallow, and get the speed up.
I’m playing on Xbox and mine seems far too eager to climb. I’ve tried a couple different flap settings including none and the nose always picks up before the tail is off the ground even if I’m pushing forward
@@imdabeast100 You shouldn't need flaps to takeoff in a DC3. The weight of the tail will cause it to take-off on it's own with controls in a neutral position. What you cannot see in any of these videos is me holding stick forward during the climb out and heavily trimming the aircraft as it picks up speed.
Thank you Jonathan for your honest demonstration! So pleasant to watch!. For a perfect landing maybe can we adjust the sensibility settings for the rudders? keep your smiling ambiance in the cockpit! 😉😊
Landing these aircraft is never going to be easy. I think in the real thing they keep the tail wheel off the ground as long as possible. This "first landing" with the DC3 was not my finest hour :) I wouldn't change any sensitivity settings - it's far better to just get used to how the plane behaves. To be honest I should have done a go-around. If landed *properly* the ground loop I almost got into wouldn't have even started to happen.
Brilliant vid, I didn't realise it was a bit of a bastard to fly lol, im off to give it a go now, great tutorial👍👍
Good luck!
As far as I recall, the DC-3 rudder authority while on the runway really comes when it raises its tail. That's why it's a plane that is landed on the mains, and hold the tail up the longest possible.
Yes - seems that way.
Cool. Thanks a lot.
Appreciate the tutorial
You're welcome!
@@jonbeckett Just an idea, would it be possible for a video on fuel management and also how to navigate using the DC3. (I assume vor-vor routing.) Thanks.
Probably one of the more classic aircraft. I'd say that besides the dc6 addon this is my favorite.
Jets are cool but I've always appreciated a big growling radial spurting fire and brimstone when it starts.
Heh - they are pretty spectacular when they start, aren't they :)
This is now one of my favorite airplanes in msfs precisely because it's so hard to land. It's like a game of don't let the nose tilt forward into the runway lol
Most tail draggers are like that to be honest. I think the key is making sure you have speed under control on approach.
Great flight great aircraft.
Thankyou! Just avoided the ground loop lol
The Three will normally take off with tailwheel locked and no flaps. This is what I heard from various scources. Landing lights come on as soon as you are on the runway.
Nice.
Looking good Jon ! Group flight in 1 hour...not comfortable at all with this aircraft...I'll have a crack at it :)
Thanks for this - very helpful. By the way, there’s a good manual in the DC3 documentation folder in the DC3 folder in official folder.
Yes - I found that AFTER figuring it out :) lol
Great video Jonathan. Thank you!
I was just wondering if you assigned flaps and gear to one of your joysticks, because I could not see what levers you might have touched/moved in the cockpit itself. There are so many levers between the two seats, that it would be great to see how each one of them is used. Thanks again!
Yes - I have a thrustmaster throttle quadrant with levers on it.
Thanks for the video, now all I need is buffalo airways livery and I’m off to Alaska 😊
Heh - I saw a documentary about Palmer Buddy Woods a while ago - now you've made me want to go watch it again.
@@jonbeckett you can catch most of the ice pilots episodes here they’re a bit out of order mind ruclips.net/p/PLgAfZdKiJiYEJvHGjjlJ0s4GKEJYHTs4A
Enjoyed your video, thanks. I love the aircraft, but am still having trouble not bouncing when I land, maybe I do need to stall onto the runway. I'll watch again.
It certainly takes practice :)
What a great video on the DC-3! Excellent overview and fantastic details on the aircraft model. What airfield is this? Haven't been able to find it just by your quick mention of the name. TY
Booker - otherwise known as Wycombe Air Park. There is a very reasonable custom scenery for it in the Marketplace.
I have 1,600 hours flying the DC3 with Pratt & Cyclone Engines & starting Radial Engines is an Art form.
Starting - unless you want a big chance of a fire & possible damage from Hydraulicing, do NOT put the mixtures to Rich OR turn the Mags on!
You must turn each engine over 9 to 11 blades before MAG on & after Engine firing on prime, Mixture to Auto Rich.
I only just got the update & the Cockpit looks great a far more modern than what we had.
On the ground independent engine & brakes plus knowing when to use the Tail Wheel Lock takes time to learn - once airborne the DC3 is a big heavy Cessna & a pleasure to fly .
BTW on 2 Engines it used (Imperial) 74 Gallons an hour at 140 kts & on 110 Gallons & hour at 110 kts! ( DOUBLE the fuel per mile).
I was purely following the checklist in the aircraft (which I rapidly discovered was utter rubbish). I'll record again with a more correct procedure when I get some time.
@@jonbeckett Mate, there are not a lot of us old f..ts left that flew them so you can only work on what you have.
I can tell you I went strait from flying Dh82 Tiger moths to DC3's & we prayed that the Captain wouldn't drop dead for 6 months - after that he was fair game. :o)
And on one Engine double the fuel per mile.
The quality of this plane is amazing.
Did you have a look on the DHC-2 beaver ?
Yes - I recorded a quick video with it already.
Two things: (1) You can tune in the NAV radios but where is the HSI gauges? Despite this, I was able to do an ILS landing using my pulldown GTN 750. (2) Can you click to hide the yokes? Couldn't figure that one out.
Given the era, it may not have any modern guages. I'll do a proper flight with it soon and have a nose around.
@@jonbeckett I found it, Jonathan. It's crude but it's near the bottom by ADF gauge. You turn a knob and then there is a gauge that you center the needle. I tried another livery and it had the Garmin in it. What a neat plane this is.
Very interesting tutorial! Two questions. What is the take off\landing airport? Is it a default airport or addon airport?
It's Wycombe Air Park - there is some very reasonably priced scenery available in the Marketplace for it.
Good work Jon ! You did better than me, I crashed at first attempt. I'll brab a copy of your funtional checklist and try again. Wonder how accurate the flight modelleling is ? When I flew (once) it took off like a balloon, did the real one do that ? Anyway, hope there will be suitable routes on Virtual Airlines for this aircraft. Thx for sharing !
I'll give it another go later.
Jonathon, I still have my original DC3 Manual with any of the procedures you want including the step by step startup if we can arrange for somewhere for me to drop copies.
Our DC3's had the Pratt R1830 & Cyclone R1820 engines which were almost identical to operate.
That's fantastic! I discovered they have included manuals with it too - so I'll take a look at them first when I get some time. I suspect the simulation might not be as accurate as you hope though :)
I would love to see a DC-3 veteran try this.
One has already commented - the checklist given in the aircraft would apparently cause a fire in the real thing :)
Cool video. Fun flight DC3.
After engine both start & battery is on.
Can you turn off "Ground Power"?
The early version of the DC3 had a lot of bugs - but it was updated soon after that resolved a lot of the small switch issues. I'll have to return to it soon and take it for another fly :)
@@jonbeckett what a fun plane to fly agreed. Love the engine sounds playing loud with hi-end headphones 🎧 are life like rumbling.
I like radial & piston twin engine planes sounds so much more satisfying than today's modern turboprops & jets.
I like the overall enhancements with modern stuff but that sounds is amazing.
Like you I have problems with the clickspots, both on the overhead AND on the fuel valves.
No flaps required for TO. The approach wasn't too bad but decent rate was high. Fly down to the runway keeping abit of power in, hold back pressure on your stick and stabilise the AC then fly it onto the runway. Once down stick forward and when the tail starts to drop stick fully to the rear. Many hours flying my tail dragger and the DC3 feels quite true to real life.
Oh, I know the descent was all wrong - I should have done a go-around really :) When time presents itself I'll do a proper flight with it somewhere.
@@jonbeckett it definitely wasn't bad! I was surprised you ploughed in so hard to be honest as if you had just pulled back and held off it would have been decent.
@@lonerider666 I was running out of runway in a hurry :)
Hello Jonathan! I’ve been trying to find where to release the parking brakes on the DC-3. Where is it located. You mentioned in the video that you released the parking brakes but did not show where it is located. I’ve been flying the PMDG 737 and use the upper part of the rudder pedals to release the parking breaks, but this does not seem to work with the DC-3. The video is fantastic and thanks again!
It's a red knob hidden underneath the throttle quadrant. It's really difficult to reach without changing the camera view, and fiddly as hell in VR. I'm convinced the throttle quadrant has been modelled slightly too large, as it shouldn't totally obscure the trim controls that are also near the parking brake control.
Landing that thing is a real challenge 😆
If you land under power it's fairly straightforward.
Well done. Very helpful, I noticed that the attitude indicator wasn't working. Maybe it's AC and you didn't turn on the inverter. Or maybe it needs to be uncaged. Any idea why?
Good question! I'll do a full flight when I get time, and learn a lot more no doubt :)
I’d like to get the rudder pedals and yoke to hook to my computer to use this flight sim. I’ve talked to a few private pilots and they say it’s very realistic.
Yep - the DC3 is really nice to fly :)
That is a lovely aircraft I’ll try that tonight. Could you remind me which airfield that is? Can’t find it.
Wycombe Air Park.
Kudos for Asobo, this DC3 is my new favorite, expecting now the C-47 livery. There's couple of planes in that package that I could do without. For example, the Charles Lindbergh, and the Wright brothers. Those could have been replaced with something more "flyable".
I very much agree. What a waste of space. We surely have had enough of oddities and ugliness in flight simulation and although some people think these things are cool it could only be a small minority (as opposed to a large minority). As we have probably seen in the past these odd-ball aircraft would have been flown once or twice and forgotten thereafter (it was certainly the case with me). Asobo/Microsoft should spend their time on producing what customers actually want - not what the team wants. This makes good business sense, and businesses that don't focus on the needs of the customer will suffer accordingly ... in the hip pocket. I am not saying that Asobo will go to the wall over such things because that would be silly, but Asobo should get their heads around the fact that flight simulator users want more attention paid to what is good, not what is less than worthy additions to the genre. As flight sim enthusiasts we should reinforce the idea in the minds of the developers that we are a serious bunch who take our sim flying seriously and that we don't (or shouldn't) treat it like a game - and neither should they. If we aim low we will get "low" ... if we aim high we will at least get something decent and more suitable to our hobby.
You got them for free...
You sound like a spoilt little child. Get a grip.
@@MegaPeedee That's probably the most cringe wall of protracted nonsense I've read in a while, all over some assets you didn't even pay for... Big yikes.
A fantastic video, congratulations. I have to learn all of this and if I'm able to land like you it will be a great achievement. Better then you, only after 20 attempts.
Oh, this landing was a mess - I just recorded a proper flight in it, and did a better job (although still made a mistake) - we all have to learn!
Thanks, do you know how to choose VOR nav / and change CRS in the DC-3 vintage cockpit?
I'll cover it in a video soon - easier to show than explain.
@@jonbeckett looking fwd too it.
sorry I don't love the DC3 however I doooo Luv the Beaver been waiting for that for years and the reason why I don't fancy the DC-3 is that panel looks FSX and I also love the Cessna 414 cept atm the 414 with the GNS530 variant locks up MSFS but the other variations have no issues.
I'm sure the 414 will get patched.
I would like to use OBS on the DC 3 retrofit; but can’t seem to do it. The guidance panel reflects it has OBS capability. If you know how to make it work, I would appreciate any guidance and instruction you can provide. Please advise if it’s not available in the retrofit variant. Thanks
I have a video on navigation in the DC3.
Thank you for doing this tutorial, I never saw what you touched or pushed to activate the flaps or to bring up the landing gear, I have tried pressing G and shift G on my keyboard and it doesn’t work, so I’m curious as to what you did to activate the gear, thank you!
I have a gear switch on my quadrant - G should toggle the gear though.
@@jonbeckett I have a Honeycomb throttle quadrant with gear selector and that didn’t work, then tried G key on keyboard and that did not work either, so frustrating!
I hope they fix the start up animation but the rest looks really nice
It's not THAT bad :)
Really thought that landing was going to go sideways there for a bit. I say under the circumstances “great job!” You didn’t buy the farm and kept in one piece. Well done! I need to get this sim… again. My son had it for a while as he had the Xbox gold subscription and to the game pass, I believe it was. He transitioned to PC gaming and stopped the subscriptions and there it went. Have been putting together the gear for a flight sim. Need a good set of pedals at a reasonable price or maybe just know that the best ones are to get. Looking forward to using it again. Also looking into DCS. Any advice for equipment to get or not waste money on as well any software content or add ones to make the experience better? Thanks for sharing!

I should have turned off the ground power - you are right :)
Thank you very much for this excellent video. Now I know how to start this bird, I've been waiting for it for a long time. Subscribed, of course. 👌
Thanks for the sub!
When i turn on the battery switch, i get this annoying buzz sound. How do i fix it? I have followed your tutorial by every step and it still does this.
HINT : To prevent looping behaviour on touchdown and stop the plane going all over the place, a HUGE help is to reduce your prop to idle once you touch down. So on touchdown; Props Idle, Throttle idle, and use brakes carefully, bits at a time... .
I've since experimented - I would do the opposite. Keep some thrust over the tail, and you retain control as the aircraft decelerates. If you decelerate too fast, it throws the centre of inertia forwards, and you ground loop.
@@jonbeckett Thanks ! I think this is an issue many pilots are having. Almost all the RUclipsrs struggled to keep the aircraft straight upon landing. A short tutorial on how to manage this would be a godsend. A thought...!
Ground power is not always available, so you can just start your battery power.
ver Nice :) for free very nice !
Sure is!

You're welcome :)
So, when I buy MSFS the 40th Anniversary will become available?
Thanks!
The 40th anniversary update added a lot of free content to the simulator.
@@jonbeckett
Ah, Ok, so whatever version I buy will come with the upgrade or will be an update download...kinda recall that from the FSX and prior versions...thanks!
never heard of auto lean. very cool, wish it was on other AC.
It just means it has automatic carburettors - like any modern road car.
if you could control the tailwheel when on unlocked - I guess this is wrong. It should not be coupled to the rudder and just allowed to caster. There is a mod from Duckworks correcting this.
In which position flaps need to be in take off? Naturel, raised or down?
The DC3 doesn't need flaps at take-off. It's tail is heavy, so you will need forward stick to maintain attitude during initial climb-out - once you get some airspeed, it balances out :)
I tried this plane the other day and my god what a difference it is to say the A320 I’m used to in the game
Yep - it's the A320's ancestor :) Probably great, great, great, great grandfather :)
Is your model the Duckworks improvement mod?
Should you have closed the cowel flaps once you start climbing?
Yep. :)
