Emily Watson is one of the most gifted actors of our time. Her performance in The Book Thief is a perfect example of how she becomes the character and brings the person to life to such an extent that we practically forget it's Emily Watson playing a part. Her role in Book Thief could have easily have become a stereotype, a cliche we've seen in films many times. However, Watson was so subtle in her approach that the character became totally unique and completely real. This is the case of an actor being so excellent in role after role that her work is taken for granted because they aren't flashy, "Look At Me, I'm Acting!" performances of the sort that win all the awards. It was wonderful that she was finally recognized with a BAFTA for her incredibly fine work in the television film, Appropriate Adult. It is another instance of her bringing life and complexity to a character with remarkable skill.

I'm Scottish and I love Emily's accent in Breaking the waves, I adore the whole performance, Bess is my favourite film character ever.
