- This is a very engaging game, easy to learn for the chess player and very rich in possibilities. Dragon chess has the regular moder chess array with two dragons -- fierce in-fighters who massively increase the potential for viscious attacks as the game progresses. A large and lovely realization with classic Austrian figurative pieces and a glossy faux marble playing surface. -- AncientChess.com
They forgot to add firebreathing to the dragon. It should be able to kill multiple pieces in a straight line and fly over pieces. The wide board is actually the most innovative part of the game design.
Hey Jason Lee, nice to hear from your. Your suggestion reminds me of the Fire Demon 火鬼 in Tenjiku shogi 天竺将棋. Fortunately, if you have this game, you can use whatever rules you want! The instructions are only 'their idea'. Unfortunately, this game is out of production and virtually impossible (or way too expensive) to get.
Sorry fans -- this game has gone out of production and I can't get it any more. Many people have expressed interest in it so -- let's hope for a new production! ...
AncientChess when I get my woodworking tools, I can make this. But, an easier way to make it would be using rounds and wood burning pictures to the tops.
@ancientchess I’ve created a chess variant myself and I would like your thoughts on it. Can I show you?
@@Tariqtalks1 Absolutely. Please contact me through the web site AncientChess.com . After you send a message, we can start corresponding normally, by email.
I want it :D! lol
@@Drsimmonsphd666 It still comes up occasionally on eBay. I just checked and there's one now for $70 or best offer. Just search 'dragon chess' on eBay and see what comes up. There will be many dragon-theme chess sets... but scroll down and sometimes you will find this game (like today). If you don't find it, click on the blue heart that says 'save this search' ... and (if notifications are working) it will send you an email whenever someone lists one (and, admittedly, many dragon theme chess sets you weren't looking for)
Thank you so much for uploading this video :D also thanx voor uploading so much ^^
It won't be looking like a dragon, but you can always add 2 white and 2 black checkers/draughts pieces to take their place.
I must say I expected a little more from the dragon's abilities. The three-square move is fine, but 'spitting fire' to an enemy piece and take that piece off the board (capturing by removing the enemy piece, without moving the dragon to occupy the space the enemy piece was on) instead of capturing it normally would have made more sense to me. In addition, I think that the dragon should have had the ability to jump over pieces, like a knight, since it is a flying creature.
+William Wilting I agree, it's conceptually a very modest innovation. In the course of chess history, much more ambitious and creative things have been tried. Probably best is to use the game set and try your own rules for the dragon. On the other hand, the simple dragon rule is easy to learn and does add significant complexity to the game, so I think there's a lot of fun to be had with the relatively simple rules offered by the manufacturer.
Can the Dragon not jump - like a Knight? I mean, it has wings.
+Chad W Smith The rules don't allow for leaping, but there's no need to follow the manufacturer's recommendation. It's a neat set and could be played with in different ways.
Good idea IMO. Since they can only move 3 spaces moving like a knight would be perfect. Wonder what their reasoning was
They should be able to move more squares EXACTLY like the queen, from the start to the end of the board, the only difference should be that they can jump unlike the queen or more like "fly" which would make them more powerful, they're "dragons" after all, 3 squares only doesn't make any sense, if anything queens shouldn't be able to move more than 3 squares in this one, maybe knights shouldn't be able to jump in this variant, what are the extra squares on the sides even for...?!
There is nothing stopping you from changing the rules for the way the dragon pieces can move. They can be changed and altered to what you think adds the most to the game.
@@illogical1421 It shouldn't become a super OP piece though. What game would be fun with three actual queens from the start? And there already are knights.
I love how your still active after all these years. I am creating my very own board game and I was wondering could I show it to you. It is based around chess but different units.
I really enjoy your videos and tutorials . Keep up a great channel.
Thanks for the encouragement. The main thing I'm working on now is getting the book out. It was just published in October and is just starting to reach its audience. If you haven't seen it, check out ruclips.net/video/-k_-UbPAQvE/видео.html
AncientChess will do!
Great video!!! Dragon chess seems interesting its kinda cool to control a dragon. Lol thanks for uploading videos frequently. Glad I subscribed.
Honestly, its beyond cool
Ok is there anywhere to find this set? It says sold out everywhere... should design sky rocket. Maybe it could do big.
Yes, this game would be easy to jump into and promises a lot of fun. I don't know the other dragon variant you're thinking of, but I know many game inventors have gone wild with possibilities. Till Next --
Rick
I know you were moving quickly and only giving an example of play, but between 4:50 and 5:15 you move black twice in a row. Thanks for the video!
+Sindraug25 Thansk for watching the video through and catching that. Yeah, I was totally winging it, maybe a little distracted by the video-making process. Sorry about the low-quality sample game!
AncientChess come now sir. You shouldn't have to apologise for such a thing. We we're enjoying watching the quick preview of the games new piece and board shape and size and it's possible ramifications. I also thought your immagined banter was enjoyable! Excellent video
I do have a set exactly like that, (minus the dragons). Had no idea it was an Austrian style.
Looks cool, where can I get such a thing?
Interesting. Can you manufacture a set for Chess on an infinite plane (see Infinite chess in wikipedia)? I would totally buy THAT! :)
I made a chess variant with Dragon pieces, it can jump other pieces like a Knight but it attacks 2 spaces forward, backwards or to the side or all 4 diagonals 2 spaces, the two pieces are kind of like Knights, because they can jump over pieces, and they're also kind of like Bishops because one only moves on dark squares while the other only can move on light squares
That sounds pretty cool. I'd like to try playing it.
I really recommend that people look at the rules of this game as a starting point, and consider other possibilities for the dragon, as you have done.
@@AncientChess I tried making a bigger board but when it gets to the end game it's just too much space, I've made another variant with a dragon piece and a regular size 8×8 board, the dragon piece moves like a Queen but attacks like a Knight, I put it right over the Rooks with a pawn in front of it on A and H3, you have to have those 2 pawns because whoever moves the dragon first, the next person can just take the opponents Rook, I keep tweaking the dragon piece, make it move like a Knight attack like Queen, it can jump pieces when its moving but cant jump when its attacking or move and attack like the combo of a King and Knight, eventually I will come up with a good idea for a variant and how the dragon should move, theres an app called Chesscraft were you can do all this right on your phone
@@AncientChess I keep thinking how would a dragon really attack, would it fly around, then land, then attack, or would it walk around, then just jump and attack, idk theres got to be a good set of moves and attacks for the dragon piece, I'm kind of liking the King Knight combo movement and it can jump when moving or attacking
@@nicoscarfo4486 Have you seen the Japanese variants in our book? Many pretty imaginative moves ... including those that fly over other pieces, and incinerate the pieces all around them where they land ...
I hope you get a chance to play out some of your ideas and see how they are in a game. It's great to have a buddy to try chess variants out with
Ok, this variant wasn't too complicated. The dragonchess-variant I found out about yesterday was very different, fantasyfull and I assume too complicated to be a good game.
This dragon-variant looks kind of cool though and very playable.
Does anyone know where I can buy this game now?
I have owned this game around 6 years and still haven’t played it.😂
does it have an accelerated dragon opening? hue hue hue
If a pawn captures into a pocket and reaches the end of it, what can it do later if it doesn't promote?
Thanks, good question. I am sorry, I will have to look this up ... will try to come back with an answer

Sicilian Dragon...with a real Dragon! Haha
no with a charizard
Sorry -- it's more like 'sold NOWHERE' now. It's been out of production for maybe a couple years. You could get lucky and find someone selling a used set, but if they 'know what they have', they can be asking outrageous prices. Here's an example, listed on Amazon ... $275!!!
www.amazon.com/Dragonchess-DC5001-Dragon-Chess/dp/B000JKNLYS/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1490971114&sr=8-12&keywords=dragon+chess
Well, I just bought the last one. There goes my tax refund! For a plastic set, I have to say, it is by far, the most beautiful and authentic looking set I've ever seen. Its a pity the old Lowe sets have gone out of production, as well. As noted by other posters, the dragons 3 square maximum is a bit of a let down. Personally, I think the dragon should be the most powerful piece on the board. A better recommendation would be for the dragon to have the abilities of the queen and the knight. Or perhaps that would be too much power on the board?
I think giving the dragons the power of a queen + knight is a good idea. That sort of piece has been tried many times in the history of European chess. It is, indeed a devastating piece -- but as each player has 2 of them, it'll be a fair fight. Let us know how your games go.
I played my first game of dragon chess with my nephews Sunday night and we enjoyed it immensely. It was fun to break out of the stagnation of the traditional chess game and we found ourselves brainstorming much more before moving as there are many more possibilities with Dragon Chess. They appreciated the "coolness" of the dragon piece and said that regular chess seemed "boring" after playing this variant. One nephew unleased his dragons early in the game and managed to bring havoc upon the others army until they were slayed by a knight and a humble pawn in the middle game. At the end of the night, we all agreed that this version should become the standard.
Steve, that's a great report! Did you use the dragon with it's prescribed move, or give it that huge queen + knight power?
I agree, there is so much more to chess if we try out its further possibilities
We decided to move out of the box and gave the dragon the queen + knight power. When the dragons were moved out onto the board, you really had to be alert because they were capable of attacking from so many different directions and inflicting so much damage. We didn't use the dragon with its prescribed move, of up to three squares in any direction, as that reduced the dragon to merely "a king on steroids." What do you think would be some other possibilities for the dragon?
What is the point of the pocket areas?
Just more board space, nothing too special
Great video excellent demo of the game ,however just to point out , the player with the white chess pieces in the video when you moved the white dragon for the first time you only made 2 square move instead of the full 3 squares
Yes, I should have said when defining the move that the dragon can move 1, 2 or 3 squares. 3 is the maximum, not the only choice. So at 3:12, when I move the dragon, it's OK, just a choice to take the piece out that far.
I like it!
Yes, it's a lot of fun .. too bad they stopped making it. Maybe we can make a mock-up ... but we really have to get some good dragons to complete the set!
@@AncientChess Yes.. would be best!
Perhaps, if you have a normal set, changing a few queens to make a hybrid look between a queen and bishop and call it a 'wizard'.
But...the look really does sell it!
In start of video I were asking myself how can the dragon move and I thought maybe like a queen, then maybe limited to 3 squares.. ^^ the only thing I were wrong is that I thought that it could jump like a knight.
Very interesting that you came up with this idea independently! Yes -- I'm finding many people have suggestions for how to make the dragon's mover even more interesting (and powerful!)
How about jump/leap/fly over pieces but in a straight line (limited to the three squares)?
Why hasn't any one made an app for this game?
+John Parinello Jr. -- Good question. I'm not in that business myself, but maybe some of the other fans out there can suggest something. There are some serious programmers out there making apps for every game they can find!
John Parinello Jr. Too true. Actually before I read your comment I went looking for an app for this.
I like this variant layout. I've found a neat way to make all these games by hand and they are actually more appreciated when finished. It looks beautiful however I hate the dragon piece. Perhaps it could be another name , like the Duke or the Prince.
Hey Steve, you don't like Dragon? I thought everyone loved Dragons! But sure, there are so many possibilities and when it comes to chess variants, it's 'dealer's choice'! I'd love to see some of your games if you have a chance to post pictures or videos.
@@rickknowlton9990 It's a personal thing with me , as it reminds me of the great dragon satan, which one day will be cast into the lake of fire. I want nothing to do with his image, let alone playing a chess game with his likeness. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful game. I see real possibilities with this game. As far as my games, I have so many I've actually lost count. I'm an avid chess player and big on variants. I'm not real savy as how to post things and videos, other than I do post on my facebook. Yes I would love to show you what i've created. Too bad we can't get together somehow. I've watched your reviews for quite some time. You are very knowledge minded and I always enjoy your posts.
@@stevehuff723 I see what you mean. That take on dragons is a big outside my world view. But I find your interest in games fascinating and would love to meet you and play some day! I'm in Sarasota, Florida. How about you?

Yeah, no doubt!
I have made a chess variant. What is your email?

100% NOT like how I thought dragons would move.
Good point -- and I would say don't take the game designer's word for how to play this game. I do think it's rather a let-down that the dragon moves exactly like a queen-but less! What do you think a logical move of these dragons would be?

Complete bullshit. Dragon Chess is supposed to be played with 3 boards (sky, earth, and underground). Each board has pieces for its own level and rules about travelling to other boards.
I don't think you'll find it too shocking to know that there is more than one chess variant with the name "Dragon chess". What a great name for a game! Yes, indeed, there is a "Dragonchess" like the one you describe, which is much more sophisticated than this little variant. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragonchess.
But you know, everybody has some sort of dragon chess set. Here's another example ruclips.net/video/oMKtW9elEPQ/видео.html.
I admit, the game by Gary Gygax is a very cool concept, with an amazing set to play it on. But does that make this simpler game total bullshit? Nelson -- cool your jets! -- it's only chess!
