- You might not expect to find a tea farm in Europe, but there is actually one off the coast of Portugal - in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The Azores islands have been synonymous with tea for over two centuries. The tropical climate and volcanic soil of these islands make for perfect growing conditions, giving this tea a sweet, perfectly balanced mineral flavor. We traveled to São Miguel, the biggest island in the Azores, to visit Gorreana, the oldest tea manufacturer on the island, whose history and production method date back 138 years.

How Tea Is Made At The Oldest Tea Farm In Europe | Regional Eats
As a devout Tea drinker I was so envious watching you talk about Orange Pekoe. I only drank that tea for many years until it became unavailable here in South Africa. If it is sold here it is so expensive that it is unaffordable to the majority of heavy tea drinkers here.
Thanks for a great video.
Yes orange pekoe is my favourite!!! I'm lucky to be in canada where it's cheap, so I have it like 3x a day xD
Their ‘broken leaf’ is my all time favourite tea, can’t wait to visit the Azores one day.
yesss
How's Azores tea different from other teas in terms of taste?
@@OurLordandSaviorSigmar I'd say the black tea is considerably lighter and with floral notes, when compared to more full-bodied black teas from India and Sri Lanka for instance. The green tea can be quite "vegetable tasting" and with some bite since the leaves are steamed to stop the oxidation process like typical Japanese green teas.
If it is literally broken tea leaves, then it is usually considered a bad tea. Full leaves are always preferred for good teas. That's why Chinese teas are one of the most respected teas in the world. Most farms don't let their leaves break.
After cheese series, now tea. Yesss!!! My most favorite food and drink are covered by you guys. Thanks a lot!
It is the only tea manufacturer in Europe. Went there this summer. The tea is really good.
Yeah three years ago lol I bet you don't even remember it. I love you ❤️
@@DirtyHardSock what
to think that the method they use for powering the machines is 100 years old and studied today for energy-efficient systems tells us a lot about the state of our technological development and environmental concerns. Super interesting.
This is what's leading up to Pluto in Aquarius; an exciting time in technological development!
@@loribach534 Tech development isn't what we need though. We need a change in human values, really, if we are going to ....develop.
flexing that gucci belt
🙈😂
Must be some expensive tea
😅
Beatiful
I gave her that belt 🤗
Woah, the subtitles at 0:15 are really epic
cause of the minerals ;)
Claudia is a very good presenter. I love watching her videos.
try to not be so pathetic!
Thanks, Claudia & crew. Great video as always, lovely to learn more about how my black tea is made.
And yes, nothing added in it!
It's grown in Cornwall because during ww2 ship transport tea from India kept getting sunk by the Germans so it was decided to grow it at home
Tregothnan
Now It's imported from Bangladesh 😁 Specially English breakfast tea.
hats off to all these workers for working so hard 👏🏼
I suddenly want to make a pot of tea.
I can watch any video as long as Claudia narrates it
👍👌👏 Simply fantastic, all of it (factory, plantation, owner, reporter, documentation etc.). Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all involved people.
I bet it smells amazing there
I love black tea so much and now I know how the tea is processing very well. Thank you. 😍😍😍😍
Portugal 🇵🇹 : the most epic little country on the planet.
Missed you guys and my dose of claudias insightful hosting
HEALTHY look at all the grass on the ground! not scorched by the sun! Wonderful farmers.
It's great to see where my favorite green tea comes from. My parents are from Sao Miguel, and settled here, where the Azorean community reigns supreme! I'm thankful there are local markets that sell the Goreanna brand!
My favorite series :D
AMAZING !!
Loving the bloopers !
iroh would like to visit this place most likely
True!! My favorite tea is the Orange Pekoe my grandmother used to drink!!!
I love green tea!!! 😋
Off course watching this while I’m drinking my tea 😋
Really beautiful machinery!
Proudly Azorean!
Her voice is lovely
I didn't know this much work went into making tea. I'll never take advantage of a cup of tea ever again
I know right 🖤🥇🌟✨💥✌️
truth!
You sexually assault your tea?
@@kim8dk it's an expression
The saying is actually “take for granted”. To ‘take advantage’ is to manipulate or force someone weaker/less powerful than you.
I was watching this with captions and I dropped my spoon while eating at 0:15 xD
The water power system seems really interesting. Would like to learn more about it.
Hooray!!! Western tea making starts Season 5.
Cool thanks
Luv this channel, I buy sardines from Portugal now for my grandma, she loves them. I'm going to have to get some of this tea 😁
Your grandpa is a she?

If i see a liberty mutual ad again, I’m going to buy a damn emu.
Also the idiot that did the captain crunch ad needs to be slapped.
Whoa please make a video on the water power! Seems interesting
new video from my fav food channel with my fav host
Wow really incredible. Not that different from the methods in Asia and Africa. I will definitely check out the tastes.
That's because they originally had a guy from China training them at the beginning. It's part of the history which you learn about if you visit - we went a few years ago!
Adoro chá, quem daqui também gosta?
Tea made the old fashioned way- check
Pristine pure water- check
Mineral rich volcanic soil- check
Zero pollution- check
I can confirm their tea tastes delicious.
The GOAT Claudia is back!!!
Good content
Nice 😊

Thanks for taking time to add actual captions for the Deaf.
良い所だなぁ〜〜✨✨
Nice
My favorite is black tea
Im kinda shocked at the way the leaves are being harvested 😨
it’s like u go to a salon for a haircut expecting the person to use scissors but they only use men’s hair clippers
Ah the poor guy working near those loud machines without hearing protection
Wow , Claudia in that opening shot, i thought you were in China! Wouldn't expect a bunch of Portuguese to know anything about tea but there you go! You look charming as always and I hope you enjoyed your tea.
Tea leaf plucking, it is not cutting everything on the top. this shows their workmanship and quality, adding tea buds stem will degrade the flavour.
but water energy & power management is great.
Leaf plucking is actually a very deep and complex subject. Buds actually in feature in many very high quality teas, for example white teas like silver needle. The inclusion of stems in the picking can also boost the aroma compounds in the tea and is particularly noticeable in Taiwanese oolongs.
0:13 with English captions wow
👍👍👍
Gotta love Claudia
That was absolutely fascinating. I had no idea one of the Azores grew tea. Can you tell me who their market is? Is the tea sold all over, or is most of it consumed by the Portuguese? Very interesting. Thank you.
In Portugal it is most appreciated, no idea about other markets / why don’t you mail them for information?
You can find it on any supermarket in the Azores... Not so common in mainland Portugal though. In the UK? Not a chance :)
I live in winnipeg canada and I buy thir loose leaf green tea at the local portuguese mart all the time!
Gorreana has a website that you can order from. It’s not too expensive
@@ricoli87 what you're talking about? In the year 2011 Gorreana matched sales in Portugal continental to Azores. That's thanks to being available in all the stores in the Próvida (Celeiro, etc) natural products chain of stores, and being distributed in the large area supermarket chains like Auchan. At least from 2009 you can easily find Gorreana in Pingo Doce, from 2012 on in Lidl. Not to mention well known herbalist stores scattered in all mainland cities and tourist souvenir establishments all over Portugal Continental.
To get my Gorreana it's just a 5 min drive away to Auchan or Pingo Doce.
Zisha teapot on display, got another episode to watch
COOL ++++++++++++++++++++++++
Interesting that the Azores have Europe's only tea and coffee farms
Açores, caralho!!!!!
Vai tu
U r doing really a god job sis❤️😀😀
I normally drink Earl Grey or cardamom tea. I'll have to try orange pekoe.
This looks great - do they export to the UK?!
Or US?
Did the factível tour once.
Claudia!! ❤️
🔥🇵🇹PORTUGAL🇵🇹🔥
Do they do selling trades? Like transporting to other countries?
Olha, tenho família nos Açores? Hehe
Tregothnan tea grow their own in england

The successor of the tea factory did not introduce the origin of the tea making process and the origin of the original tea varieties, nor why a tea factory was built here, but I think the tea seeds and tea making process came from Great China
Check their website.
Im getting curious about te and coffee
Wish sound was better.
Well as soon as you use machine to pluck the tea leaves that’s already not a good start
Anyone knows if they are using any chemicals for the fields ?
Clau dia..
Actually when the Portuguese found Japan 🇯🇵 they adopted the techniques of the Japanese to grow tea . It’s actually Chinese in origin that’s why the name Camilla chinensus
Maybe you can go into why the caffeine is different in each tea next time. I didn’t know all tea was made from the same plant…how can the caffeine levels be different? Just because of the oxidation process??
Caffeine levels are very hard to determine.
Generally the Indian (Assam) variety has more caffeine than the Chinese variety and the smaller and younger the leaf the more caffeine. Don’t confuse this with a small broken leaf grade after processing.
The age of the plant and the methods of cultivation all play a part in caffeine levels.
To say that black tea has more caffeine than white or green tea would be false as a grade of white tea consisting of only small leaf buds is likely to have more.
Also if I may add, Tea per 1kg has more caffeine than coffee but we generally only use 2-3g per cup making it less.
0:13 What's wrong with the captions?
Mmmm I bet those oranges were good tho
in my country Indonesia, tea young leaves are hand picked and choosen, there is good one and a bad one, not using machine that will take every top shoot
This reporter does not make me cringe at all. Is this really insider video?
Nice episode. The tea looks wonderful. Does this mean that tea can be made from the leaves of any tree?
Azores kkkkk i love people trying to say Açores
0:12 what happened to the captions?
They failed
Plot twist how pot is made and made to look like tea
