I went into Evangelion expecting Shinji to be super whiny and pathetic but when I saw this scene I was shocked. I really don’t understand the hate for shinji.
@Clippy It's not only that. Shinji doesn't fit the typical mold of what people expect the mc/hero to be. It's honestly why I feel he is one of the best MCs ever. Shinji is teenager going through a lot of emotional trauma and then gets handed the gargantuan task of protecting humankind on top of that. Shinji showcases fear, sadness, and self-doubt. Shinji feels human.
Yeah, I only saw the series in its entirety a few years back, but I’m with you there. SO MANY make him out to be one of the most cowardly (if not THE MOST) protagonists in anime, but I don’t think that’s fair! Don’t get me wrong, he’s far from heroic or badass on the level of other anime main characters. Having said that, however, he does still take action to help and protect others around him. And given that he’s just a normal kid without any remarkable powers or abilities, his reason to be apprehensive is warranted.
According Hideaki Anno, creator of Evangelion, the reason he hates Shinji is not because of his character but the fact that he's a reflection of Anno's 4 year depression
I think 'I mustn't run away' is better precisely because it's more distinct. 'Don't run away' becomes generic because it's what people are more likely to say.
The pure agonizing screams of Shinji killing this Shamshel was uncomfortable to watch. Ill never get used to it. This wasnt some heroic charge. Kid literally snapped from the pressure. 3rd degree burn on his hand, almost crushed his class mates [who are now in the entry plug making piloting the Eva harder] and gets impaled twice while running low on battery power [that he doubt sees and hears ticking down.] On top of a crippling depression, abandonment issues, and hell that is piloting an Eva. And he still wins? People are way too hard on Shinji. Dudes a badass even before the Rebuilds. Sans Eva Unit one going berserk, he has the highest Angel kill count out of the three pilots. Doesnt excuse a certain scene or ENDING THE FUCKING WORLD [not entirely his fault considering he had no control of the situation and was FUBAR in EoE].
Yeah he’s definitely badass but certainly not a hero . Thats why we love him he’s not out here making speeches about peace and prosperity. He’s just a kid who’s brought into a fucked up situation by both his parents and nerv . Hated disrespected, betrayed by the people he loves the most he still fights . That’s fucking powerful . Even though his willing to fight is selfish and immature , he still saves the day . Well untill episode 24 and eoe that’s when I stopped liking him .
Love that we don't even need any key words, you just put "a certain scene" and we already know what god forsaken scene you're talking about. I do love shinji, but i just can't forgive him in that ONE scene .
Toji is, along with Hikari, the most mature teenager in the series. After seeing what Shinji has to endure, he immediately recognizes that he was wrong to blame him for his sister's incident and apologizes. Unlike Asuka, who believes that everything revolves around her and is so insecure that she cannot admit that she is wrong, he is adult enough to recognize his mistakes and take responsibility for them, Since he has a sister to take responsibility for, he has the humility and moral compass that the redhead lacks. It's really tragic that Shinji couldn't have interacted with him more, because Toji could have been the older brother that the poor boy needed to become a man.
Toji was always his best friend, and in fact if you watch episode 19 (after the fight against Eva 03) you see that Shinji is upset and shows no fear of his father, he doesn't care what they say to him, because he has made up his mind. to stop piloting because of his injured friend, in addition to having a mature conversation with Misato where she herself confirms her maturity, Shinji was able to continue improving, in fact this is noticeable in the following episodes, in episode 20 he stops caring about the acceptance of his father and begins to think about Misato, Asuka and Rei, who in one way or another are there for him and that is why he decides to return to the real world, in episode 21 he puts on his pants and argues with Asuka about Kaji's death, Although he still lacks confidence to be able to console Misato since he does not know what he should do at that moment, in ep 22 he literally asks to be sent to fight Arael to save Asuka and prevent her from suffering more, although he is not able to console her (due to lack of confidence and social skills) at least try to help her in his own way, the problem is that during that time Asuka becomes more violent, Misato withdraws and becomes indifferent to their situation, making it much more difficult for him to Shinji achieve something, then the death of Rei and Asuka in a catatonic state make him feel guilty because he cannot feel capable of helping them, as well as he is terrified of Misato's proposal (not only because it seems bad, but because it does not It's not going to help him at all and it's only going to make him feel worse later) then they discover what Rei really is, causing Shinji great discomfort and the death of Kaworu, leaving him destroyed.
I'm sorry... I think this is the superior dub. The voice acting is pretty damn good. I felt that scream and when the music starts picking up... Good stuff.
some of the translations are a bit weird but overall I really do like that they got younger actors for the Eva pilots. I think Spike Spencer is great as Shinji but he still sounds a little too old for the role.
Sorry but ADV is ten times better than whatever "dub" this is supposed to be. ADV sure could sound cheesy but it sounded way more natural and likable compared to Netflix's butchering.
they went from Shinji crying to the fuckin happy happy netflix outro music. They really should get more than one outro track so it fits the mood better or smth
Spike will always be Shinji to me, but if there’s one thing Casey’s Shinji will always have over Spikes’s is those screams. Casey’s screams are genuinely so damn raw I have to give the actor credit where it’s due, even if I feel like the voice itself is to girly for Shinji.
this scene goes harder then I can handle. I feel tears i my eyes every time I watch this scene. I feel sad yet scared by shinji. You can really feel and understand the pressure and pain that this awesomely written character is going through. This is one of my favourite scenes in all of anime hands down.
Ive been crying watching this scene. He’s going through hell again, but being stronger than anyone could ask, and now theres people who recognize how bad it really is. They feel for him and I live through it because nobody knows what Ive been through, nobody knows how bad its been and his classmates give me that salvation of understanding
Just realized answering another post about series. Still my favorite to this day, a serial watcher. Really its good display of each kind of child mindset in the midst of battles. One really does not desire it but feels he must. One is bathed in nothing but combat and devotes all to the mission. The other has something to prove with superiority complex to hide her inner unstableness of emotions. All three are thrust into a fight each time with the world on the line further amplifying above in all the wrong ways. Meanwhile the adults can only really watch and try to guide them. This is where Misatto realizes in the end Shinji needed love but was blind he had it, Asuka needed to know its ok to be vulnerable, and Ray can desire more than the mission. She spends most of the series gradually opening up as a mother figure seeing the scars and wants to fix them. In the end encourages them to do what they felt best for themselves. Ray excluded as Gendo gives her little choice. Asuka embraced her situation and had a stronger drive. Pushing past her past trauma. End Result Ray completing Lilith but to some degree willingly goes with the plan offering Shinji humanities future. At least seems like that anyway.
