    Now I feel there is structure to my learning to play. I have something to practice and build on. I'm glad I kept searching.

    Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinally! I have had my uke since January but you are the first "let's learn the uke" teacher who isn't just focused entirely on playing chords for popular songs! Your videos are clear and the on-screen instructions are fabulous. Thank you for all your hard work!

      Also are there specific rules for which finger can play which note? Like, would any note on the first fret be played by the pointer finger, second fret notes the middle finger, etc. and then repeat every four frets?

      @TenThumbsProductions  8 лет назад +1

      As far as which finger on which string goes, there is no set rules, but you will see different patterns will have different combinations for your fingers. In same patterns I only use thumb and pointer, in others I use thumb, pointer, and middle, others will even include the ring finger too, but I never use the pinky. Try to fit what is most comfortable.

      Okay thanks, I will :) I'm trying to learn "correctly" as best I can; figure it'll be much easier to learn everything the right way the first time over trying to reteach myself later.

      I'm a bit late, for a different style as well, check out James Hill. he focuses a lot on theory. Each learning focus is worth it, and TTP has great fingwrpicking tutorials, which is my favorite style

      Well, i'll be coming back every week for the rest of the lessons. Maybe you can do some lessons on the 'major shapes', the minor pentatonic lessons was great.

      @TenThumbsProductions  10 лет назад

      Andy Shaw Thanks Andy, Major and Minor shapes and blues will be a long developing topic after we get through some fingerpicking. Try doing a little reading on relative majors and minors to get you going in the major shape. Cheers.

    Hey Tyler! Digging deep in your archives, learning a lot of Uke and trying to learn a little theory too.. I have heard you mention a few times about knowing 'the Roman numerals'.. do you have a tutorial on this? I'd like to check it out! Thanks so much for everything you do!

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  9 лет назад

      jason mcghee Hey Jason, you are right I have been meaning to do a video on that for a long time, in fact I have been meaning to start a whole music theory series I just don't know where to shoot them. The audio in my apartment isn't the best. This is what I am referring to though, in a musical key every chord is assigned a roman numeral and once you can figure that out the roman numerals also have certain roles in melody, tension, chord progressions, etc. www.flickr.com/photos/51462236@N08/6796950242/

      Thanks a ton for the quick response! I have enough here to get started on some research. Thanks again!
      If you ever find yourself stumped for tutorial ideas.. How to figure out a strumming pattern would be a good one. I would like to be able to pick up the lyric sheet (where the chord is over the words)of song I like and be able to play it.
      And also, more Hootie is never a bad idea! You're doing great! Thanks a bunch!

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  9 лет назад

      Very cool man. Really happy to help. A quick point of refrence to that might help is that a blues is a I-IV-V (a lot of times written as I7-IV7-V7 because of the use of the 7th harmony which makes the blues the blues). So if you play a blues in A, and the chords are A7-D7 and E7, next time you play a normal song, lets say something like A-F#m-D-E than you can see that the A, D and E are I-IV-V. This information is great for transposition, understanding melody, understanding improvisation and ultimately a gate to jamming with other musicians and instruments. Cheers man!

    ruclips.net/video/NTuNghHHuUQ/видео.html I never use my 4th finger - the 4th and 5th fingers can be used to steady your hand on the uke. Maybe if you have smaller hands this would work. By using your 3rd finger instead, you also get it in position for an added strum.

      Tim Chandler Hey Tim, I appreciate the input. I am a guitar player, but I also do use this technique that you refer to. I use it for patterns that have moving melody, or less pattern repetition, but as this series of lessons is meant to introduce people to fingerpicking from the very beginning, and because of the repetition of this particular pattern, I felt this was the appropriate finger placing. In future lessons we will show how to use the ring finger as an anchor, which is something I do on my guitar, too. Cheers man and keep on playing.

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  10 лет назад

      Tyler Austenfeld Also, you can rest your palm on the bridge to get that same anchor when you're using your ring to pluck.

    My little finger is resting on the board in a pointer position like an anchor. I find it much easier that way. Is it okay to do that?

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  8 лет назад

      +Achuthan B It is a great habit to have and you will see many guitar players use it as well. Any anchor/pivot action is good.

      Close, it is the same harmonic progression in a different key. Ben E. King sings it in the key of A.

    one question how to take the uke during finger picking i mean with right hand

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  7 лет назад

      That would really depend on the pattern, I hold it more or less the same I just rest my hand on the bridge.
