You know, as much as some people might say a lights on ride-thru ruins the magic of an attraction, such as the Haunted Mansion, I believe the opposite. I think it's fascinating to see this ride with all the lights on, see the props and effects fully and see how they function. To me, it adds to the magic, as when the lights go down, and you know how it works, it amazes me just how brilliant the Disney Imagineering team truly is, to bring what might seem to be the simplest of effects to a whole different perspective, when the lights go down. Thanks for the vid!
If i went all the time, i would like it with the lights on, but if disney world is a once in a lifetime trip, you want to experience the magic the way it is, not how it works behind the scenes
Seeing it with the lights on, just lets us know HOW MUCH craftsmanship and artistic talent was put into the immersive displays. All the details are stunning! There was no skimping in the set designs! If only all themed dark rides had this much effort into their art design.
If only EVERY ride in this entire world, especially dark rides, were this good. But remember, they have kept the simplicity since the 1900s dark rides at the turn of the 20th century..Thankfully it doesn't have the same flammable material as the ones from the 1940s and before...So dark rides in most amusement parks are usually run by owners whom just want to make a profit off merchandising and have to keep the restaurants and other attractions looking good while dark rides the owners feel doesn't really need and update until maybe 20/30/40 years down the road and then upgrade the cars+tracks and A/C and ventilation and such.
I was especially impressed with the black patterned wallpaper as you leave the ballroom and enter the attic scene (around 2:18). I watched a video of a normal lights-off ride-through and as I suspected, you can't see the pattern at all. It's a great example of the details you are talking about.
Neat things I noticed: The Mansion is VERY CLEAN! Likely swept thoroughly as part of the changeover. I always heard stories that they had to keep spreading dust to scenes because the A/C blew it away, or that's only in the non UV lit parts and they're real good at keeping it off the ride track and the corners and baseboards you don't normally see. DARKNESS DOES A LOT OF WORK in the design. The graveyard doesn't really do anything much more technologically advanced than carnival dark rides or smaller Disney dark rides (besides the animatronics, they're grouped in the same manner as Pirates, even with turntable gags), but the scale and the detail and intricacy in one tremendously vast room that you get to see from different perspectives from the balcony above, and from outside the gates, and then you zoom in to different scenes that you got an overhead view of is the magic cinematic feat. The vehicles literally are like cameras craning through a tremendous set. The set design knows where to put detail and where not to because again, the darkness covers any lack of detail but there's never any moment you have nothing to look at. I thought it was also neat that the floor isn't continuous in the graveyard. - when coming down from the attic you can see cement floor and 2x4s propping up the ground which is sloped up so the ride vehicle is in a little valley to give distance and perspective like a small berm. You can walk between the graveyard and slope from the attic and not be on the set. They didn't bother to paint the backs of the set or the floor because it's so dark and your attention is well-diverted. It's easy to see the exterior second story roof on the right when descending from the attic that you normally barely get a glimpse of between the trees because it's dark and SO MUCH is distracting you on the left.
How amazing that a ride in a warehouse can transform into the fully immersive attraction we know and love, by just dimming the lights and playing the audio. And transporting us into the "show" that has been so expertly created.
i'm a little jaded with nightmare before christmas and haunted mansion holiday, but that sally animatronic is one of my favorites and i love seeing her under full lighting! she's so beautiful!
Coolest video ever! This will go viral 🤩❤ I love that we can see the “exterior” roofline as we fall backwards at 3:12 ! It’s usually so hard to see on video!
Honestly, I like seeing the normal ride through just as much as anyone else, but this is a real treat. I love seeing how the magic is done whenever we have the chance. Thanks for the upload. 👍
So cool to see it with the lights on, but there was something sad about seeing the Ballroom completely void of Happy Haunts. It's as if Leota was like "the vibes aren't sympathetic- HIDE!"
Well… two excited kids at Disneyland? Is that really obnoxious or pretty normal? there’s likely always that much jibberjabbering on this ride but the normal ride sounds were off.
I wish you could noise cancel kids lol. Its so amazing to see the layout and the complex of each set. Its also fascinating to see thats its only a few rooms that are just really well used.
Kids are always going to point out the flaws and continuously talk about it, especially if they have friends in the same car as they are. So don't be surprised if those individuals are in elementary school and they just don't know what is fiction to them and what is real...They just expect it to be playing and doing it normally instead of no audio and just sound effects and that's it...To them it's a bit scary and talking outloud makes them feel better than just staying quiet, even though they don't know it's done by engineers/adults whom make it special or cool to those whom are interested in behind the scenes stuff of the Haunted Mansion and such.
@@SuperFlashDriver shiiii... not the elementary kids i drive a school bus for, they'd want to run tf all around like crazy people. they know what's real and isn't, and if you happen to have a kid that's too delicate for a scary ride, then don't take them ffs.
@@ryanbarker5217 I'm only saying that because of what the audio is from this video, considering that it can get quite annoying later on if I want to enjoy a peaceful no commentary ride through of the attraction. Again, it's a kid-by-kid basis, some will get scared, others may not, it depends.
I never realized how much the Holiday changeover really was. I always thought that the amount of time that they closed it down for was way too long. But now that I got to see it like this, I'm actually very impressed. Thanks for sharing!
The People Mover in Orlando goes through Space Mountain--I was on the People Mover (great way to rest your feet for a while) and when it went through Space Mountain, the lights were on. The ride is so compact within the giant structure. Very cool and a totally different perspective.
Before they shut down the DL People Mover, it also went through Spacemountain. That is part of the reason in order to repair the track they would have to also tear into the show buildings the track goes through. When they begin the New Tomorrowland remodeling the list of attractions they will be keeping is so short, the list is Monorail, Spacemountain, Disneyland Railroad Station. The Matterhorn and a portion of the Autotopia/Submarine track area will become Fantasyland for the Fantasyland expansion. That leaves a lot of options of what to put in the New Tomorrowland including a new People Mover with no restrictions on where the track can go. Also the old Ameica Sings/Inoventions building footprint is identical to Spacemountain's so they could even possibly relocate or double the number of Spacemountain tracks placing the entrance in-between the 2 buildings which would then also give them a reason to have a larger Firework Viewing area and moving sidewalk going to the upper level while then allowing the current entrance ramp area to Spacemountain be converted into additional seating for the restaurant underneath. They could also keep the cast member gate where it's currently at by using a moving sidewalk going up since it will leave open a space underneath with them walking to the left or right of the moving sidewalk to head towards their assigned area in the land.
@@WolfDShadow To be honest, if they did have two of the same attractions in one area, the lines wouldn't be so long compared to only having one attraction. Why bother trying to come up with a new attraction when you can, double/triple the amount of the same attraction at different buildings and such?? If it can be done in theme park video games, then so should theme parks in real life.
As someone who has only seen the ride through videos it awesome to see the layout better and other details that are harder to see in the original ride. Love your video of Disney it's the only way I'll get to see them living in Australia.
I love seeing things like this. It is amazing with how much huge these dark rides are. There are amazing tricks and illusions with ride lighting that can make them seem bigger or packed than they usually are. And when you see it with the lights on. It is awesome to see how its all done.
It's that age when you feel like you're above anything that feels slightly uninteresting. Looking back on those days is both funny and horribly uncomfortable.
This is absolutely incredible. I've never gotten to see the inside of a ride like this and Ive seen A LOT. I also really appreciate the description of the video to give a thorough heads up that this is not the normal ride. Thank you for this !!
The scary things I didn't like was the three-candle candle up there moving back and forth. And the green footprints going up and down the upside down stairs in the air. And I think we were stuck around Madame Leota's magic ball for a while. And the candle just haunts me forever. And there was a slight backwards drop that the "Doombuggy" did when it went backwards. That was creepy, too. And when we stopped in our "Doombuggy" there was the creepy narrator guy on the PA system said something like: "... something something, Doombuggy..."
This ride used to seem so long to me as a kid, but in reality, it's only a few rooms/hallways. It's probably because there's so much more to look at when the effects are going.
LOL WHAT. they have light on rides all the time after it breaks down. I almost did space last week w lights on but they turned back off right as I boarded but ppl before me saw it. Have you not seen all the yt videos w lights on lmao…
Probably a reason. If the hallway was packed and the exit was too dangerous to let people leave then it may have been just better to cycle them out through the ride.
They can probably save an hour or two of time if nothing is functionally wrong with the ride system just bringing guests out the normal way in vehicles rather than CMs unlocking every one and waiting for guests to wander to the exit. My guess is there was something wrong with the ride sound system since there were no announcements nor a peep from the soundtrack, and usually during a temporary stop the attraction sound continues, only ducking out during live or pre-recorded announcements. I've heard that there's a threshold of what is "bad show" that will close an attraction even if everything else is otherwise working. I read a story once about the Pirates CMs being told the Auctioneer's hat had fallen off. That wasn't a huge deal - a CM just has to walk in and put it back, but when they discovered it was actually the Auctioneer's HEAD had completely fallen off, that qualifies as "bad show" and they closed Pirates down. In this video there was no attraction sound, and also it looked like Jack's right hand was missing outside the cemetery gates? That might be something that's only visible with the lights on.
U r 1 in a 1,000,000 to have seen this it must’ve been a real treat to have witnessed the Haunted Mansion Holiday with the lights on thank u so much for getting this all on tape!
I've been on that ride in 1977 as a 6 year old at Disneyland. It was pretty scary at that time but I remembered it pretty well. I've been to the one at Disney World a few times in my teens and it was pretty cool. I've been meaning to visit Disneyland since now I'm back to living in California. To see this ride with lights on as an adult is really fascinating to see how they all worked. Naturally this would have ruined the magic for any young kids but as an adult I thought it was pretty cool.
This lights on POV as well as the lights on POV of Animal Kingdoms Dinosaur ride are just two examples of how Disney has both mastered and revolutionized dark ride lighting in amusement parks
they should make this a choice or maybe see it with the lights on during the day. i totally want to see the Haunted mansion with the lights on. I think it would be so much fun and entertaining. It would be like a behind the scenes look at the very hard work the team has put into this ride. I would love it.
Thank you for sharing this! Fascinating, yet I prefer the lights out. My wife, life-long lover of Disneyland, did not care for it as much. Liked and subscribed. Carry on.
This is actually quite common for the first few weeks after the holiday changeover. The failure is not the attraction itself, but the audio control center's known as audio central all the way across the park. Now, in order for the lights to dim and the attraction to work properly the audio must Play First.
@@caseyrice768 actually, it does. There were several audio failures in DCA when I worked there because of that. Audio central controls the sound, music, and audio operations for every bit of both parks. The key reason is Disney and show control. Only thing is now, instead of using tapes, the system uses digital audio files.
I see this as an "on purpose" for sensory challenged audiences. There is a huge audience for type of ride experience, and I intially saw this as something like that, along the lines of the Not So Scary halloween. that said, I adore this kind of video for the details we get to experience. I'm not likely to see this dressing of the mansion in person, so I'm very grateful to you for this.
Disney: There has been an issue. Please disembark your vehicle. Please be respectful and do not take pics of video of behind the scenes on your way out. Also Disney: Sure, go ahead. Heck, we'll stage an event and turn on all the lights.
That’s crazy! I wonder how long it stayed that way. When I worked there, there were dedicated maintenance teams for every attraction, so when something like that happened, we’d stop loading, close the door to the foyer, cycle the guests on the ride out, exit everyone inside pre-load out through emergency exits, empty the queue, and shut the front gate until it was fixed. It’s super bad to allow guests to see the place with work lights on. I know there’s no longer dedicated team for each ride, which IMO is insane.
Based on how many people are seen filming I wonder if this was done for a Media Day, otherwise there was no reason to be loading guests onto the ride at the start of the video when they have a exit door to send people back outside while maintenance was fixing things.
Interesting to see the kids jabbering through the whole thing non stop. I would have been fascinated that talking would have been a distraction from enjoying as a kid.
wow, I thought this was intentional as a way to really see the props and backgrounds and also better for hyper sensitive kids. I love it! maybe as an intro the first few days in the future? that would be amazing. thanks for the upload. I live in sweden and will never make it to florida to see the real thing.
virtually silent -- the music and narration add so much to this attraction. Hard to believe the original ride is an incredible 54 years old -- with few exceptions, it's virtually the same as when it first opened in August 1969
That was kinda weird, but neat in a way. We have been watching another blogger, "Hey Brickey" and he has been doing a series on the HM, there is a great story about the trees, which you can really see in your vid, as you "fall" backwards into the cemetary, you really need to watch those for the backstory!
The doom buggies are very quiet. And they move swiftly. It does TOTALLY ruin the look with the lights on. But it is SO COOL!. Hatbox ghost is all black?
In the dancing hall, u can see a spider on the window in the middle one. The story was a rider through a rock at it n cracked the window, and it made a shape of a 🕸 so they decided to put a spider on it instead of replacing it cause it would take a long time to replace it
WHY? 🤨🤨🤨 When I worked there 30 years ago this would have been unthinkable! What happened behind the scenes was sacred information, guests where NEVER to see anything like this because it would soil the experience. Now they are openly inviting the pubic into this?
I remember as a kid around 1980 riding Space Mountain in DisneyWorld and the lights came on half way thru the ride. We were offered to ride it again right away, but my parents declined.
What are the black cylindrical things most seen in the attic and graveyard quite near the ride track? Are they speakers or hiding lights or some sort of infra red sensing system if you get out of the ride vehicle?
My wild guess is pop-up ghost speakers since they seem to be nearby where they are in the regular version of the attic and graveyard, but they're off for holiday. Or they could just be general positional audio - the ghosts wail in the attic, and then in the graveyard when you hear different specific ghost voices singing the song...maybe?
And yet they keep on jacking up the price of admission! Get it right, Disney! This is totally ridiculous and totally unacceptable. Walt is turning in his grave….

The failure is not the attraction itself, but the audio control center's known as audio central all the way across the park. Now, in order for the lights to dim and the attraction to work properly the audio must Play First.
That’s really interesting. Thanks for the insight
audio central does not provide audio to attractions
@@caseyrice768 actually, it does. There were several audio failures in DCA when I worked there because of that. Audio central controls the sound, music, and audio operations for every bit of both parks. The key reason is Disney and show control. Only thing is now, instead of using tapes, the system uses digital audio files.
@@Starflare5 oh yeah? Did you work in audio central?
@@darkridearts it's 100% wrong.
That was AWESOME! Thank you for posting it. HM is my favorite thing ever and I’ve never had the chance to ride it with the lights on. HURYBAK
THANK YOU SO MUCH I’ve been dying to see it like this!!!
Wow you got it with the lights on!
What a wild experience!
So cool thanks for sharing
Well that is something you don’t see every day. Thanks for capturing it and sharing with us!
Disney: There has been an issue. Please disembark your vehicle. Please be respectful and do not take pics of video of behind the scenes on your way out.
Also Disney: Sure, go ahead. Heck, we'll stage an event and turn on all the lights.
The animatronic girl, silent, but the eyes and legs moved..seriously creepy
@@WolfDShadow The media especially doesn’t need access with the work light on. No way was it intentional.
The resolution and bright lights really make it easy to make out the bullet hole behind the spider in the ballroom scene.
Interesting to see the kids jabbering through the whole thing non stop. I would have been fascinated that talking would have been a distraction from enjoying as a kid.
Thanks so much I really enjoyed seeing the haunted mansion with the lights on so magical
Send this to TPM vids!
Super cool.
Wonderful for those of us who’ve been on it 100 times. Sad for anyone riding it for the first time.
Part of Micky's not so scary Halloween❤just ❤my style
Fun with or without lights❤
That was completely disappointing. It's like writing through a warehouse full of Christmas decorations
It looks so cool
How? I thought they would stop the ride and fix it if there’s a technical problem. Or was this a featured ride for early guests?
Madame Leota must have called a ghoul team meeting. LOL
wow, I thought this was intentional as a way to really see the props and backgrounds and also better for hyper sensitive kids. I love it! maybe as an intro the first few days in the future? that would be amazing. thanks for the upload. I live in sweden and will never make it to florida to see the real thing.
SPOOK-TACULAR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!--BOO !
virtually silent -- the music and narration add so much to this attraction. Hard to believe the original ride is an incredible 54 years old -- with few exceptions, it's virtually the same as when it first opened in August 1969
That boy has a very good Oggie Boogie impression
That was awesome! ❤
I’m literally about to hop on the train to ride thissssss
What a unique view! I got a kick out of the commentary by the kiddos, lol.
Please tell me you sent this to tpmdisneybeats this is soooo cool
So cool!! I was looking for the bullet hole in the Ballroom and I STILL cant see it!! lol
A real behind-the-scenes look! But seriously, they should've immediately shut the ride down. This was a major gaffe on their part.
“The Nightmare Before Christmas” has taken over “The Haunted Mansion” from mid-October to early-January.
For some reason the HM still feels creepy with all the lights on. Imagine being all alone in there at night.
That was kinda weird, but neat in a way. We have been watching another blogger, "Hey Brickey" and he has been doing a series on the HM, there is a great story about the trees, which you can really see in your vid, as you "fall" backwards into the cemetary, you really need to watch those for the backstory!
Kinda wish they left the original props in place so we could see the details of the interworkings but overall cool experience.
This was really interesting but, ohhhh, that whiny kid!
The hatbox ghost looks more scary when it’s not working lol
The doom buggies are very quiet. And they move swiftly. It does TOTALLY ruin the look with the lights on. But it is SO COOL!. Hatbox ghost is all black?
Such a great classic attraction
Everything looks so much smaller with the lights on!
You missed the Endless Hallway scene!
In the dancing hall, u can see a spider on the window in the middle one. The story was a rider through a rock at it n cracked the window, and it made a shape of a 🕸 so they decided to put a spider on it instead of replacing it cause it would take a long time to replace it
not a rock, but a bullet. someone fired a shot and its a bullet hole.
Same thing happened to my parents on Space Mountain at DW back in the 70s. They said it was weird to ride on it with all the lights on.
WHY? 🤨🤨🤨
When I worked there 30 years ago this would have been unthinkable! What happened behind the scenes was sacred information, guests where NEVER to see anything like this because it would soil the experience. Now they are openly inviting the pubic into this?
if i were disney, 🧸
id charge for a
lights on experience 💅🏻
💡
🤓💰🐭🏰🎢🎡🎠⛲️
Those ghost Exit signs at 1:40 😛
Thank you!!! Why did they do this? ~ and it was so much Fun!!
I remember as a kid around 1980 riding Space Mountain in DisneyWorld and the lights came on half way thru the ride. We were offered to ride it again right away, but my parents declined.
Now that was Cool
What are the black cylindrical things most seen in the attic and graveyard quite near the ride track? Are they speakers or hiding lights or some sort of infra red sensing system if you get out of the ride vehicle?
My wild guess is pop-up ghost speakers since they seem to be nearby where they are in the regular version of the attic and graveyard, but they're off for holiday. Or they could just be general positional audio - the ghosts wail in the attic, and then in the graveyard when you hear different specific ghost voices singing the song...maybe?
This is way scarier than the actual ride 😭
And yet they keep on jacking up the price of admission! Get it right, Disney! This is totally ridiculous and totally unacceptable. Walt is turning in his grave….
