    For everyone who doesn't have access to Pete: his book on crack climbing is actually very good. It has very clear explainations and really, really good drawings. I taught myself climbing golden-sized cracks with it and i'm in the process of learning purple and red cracks. (Cam colors obviously)
    For everyone who doesn't have the patience to develop pain tolerance: Just tape up.

    Love to see how actively you are applying the technique with every step! I've always heard from other videos that Pete had insane pain tolerance, now I understand why.

  • @ca99nada
    @ca99nada 2 года назад +36

    The video makes me hopeful to be able to crack climb. I found it insanely too painful when I tried it, but you really showed how "easily" the body can adapt to the pain when pushing enough! Great video!!!

    • @LoveAndClimbing
      @LoveAndClimbing 2 года назад +8

      There's a definite pain tolerance and skin conditioning aspect, but I will say that also I think a lot of why he was able to tolerate the pain better, is that it's less painful when you have better technique. When your jams are sticking well, you don't have to squeeze them as hard, so you don't put as much pressure on the bones, and they don't slip, so they don't tear up the skin.

    • @GeekClimber
      @GeekClimber  2 года назад +13

      It does take some patience to build up the pain tolerance. One thing I didn't mention in the video is that I find that maximizing the contact area between the back of the hand and the wall reduces the pain. If you brace the fingers too much, so it ends up that only the knuckles are contacting the wall, it will be a lot more painful. You got this, man!

    • @Jlegener
      @Jlegener 2 года назад +3

      I’m on day 3 of my gym wall training. Gone from just a couple moves to 8-10. I find the foot pain so much worse than hands. Using hand Jammies might help with that too

    Now that is super star status - when you get coaching from Reelrock 16 Wideboyz. Wicked cool and congrats on first crack climb. 🤘 I personally don’t like it-not for pain etc., but just bcoz I’m such a clutz, I could see myself leaving a hand or foot in and take an epic fall like I always do. Ha ha ha. Never too old to fall from that height. 😆 I did my first trad climb a couple years ago-Jtree-my lead buddy placing gear in cracks-my buddy was laughing hysterically bcoz I couldn’t face climb and freaking out as I was cleaning the gear. Never fell though.

    My first experience with crack climbing was in Yosemite at the beginning of June this year. On swan slab near Yosemite falls, there’s a route called oak tree flake. I knew the basics of crack climbing but when I first stepped my foot into the crack it hurt like crazy. I completed the route but if the crack part was any longer I don’t know if I could’ve done it because of the pain. Great job pushing through the pain to learn the right technique and keep learning. Coming from someone with first time crack climbing experiences similar to this, I know how it feels at first and man is it difficult.

    Great vid!! I have a question: it looks like a lot of the time when you're going up you're actually releasing both a hand and a foot at the same time, so you only have two points of contact. Is that easier than always keeping 3 points of contact, i.e., only removing either a hand or a foot at a time?

      @@GeekClimber No. Especially for those painful indoor parallel wood cracks. Unless maybe someone thinks of wearing rock shoes as aid lol.
      I mean I climbed in the '70s before cams were widespread, and some criticized them as "uncool", but believe me we got over that. One of my current favorites is steep fist cracks with gloves; almost like a sport climb (good gear too)
