  • In today's video, I set up a new aquarium for my NEW wild caught axolotl! I recently was told by a subscriber that he caught an axolotl in the Florida everglades, so I set out with a net in hopes of getting one, I ended up catching a rare orange crawfish, and an axolotl!! Leave a comment with a name for our new pet!

    Axolotls are practically extinct in the wild, they only live in two lakes, definitely not Florida! I’m guessing that might be a tiger salamander larvae, they look super similar. Make sure there is someplace for the larvae to get out of the water to morph.

    This is interesting. That definitely looks like an Ambystoma larva (genus that includes tiger salamanders, Axolotls, and other large salamander species). Tiger salamanders are native and would seem more likely, but, from what I can see online, they don't occur that far south. The southernmost record on Inaturalist is between Gainesville and Tampa. It's too big to be a marbled salamander, and spotted salamanders don't occur in Florida at all. So either tiger salamanders have expanded or there's actually an introduced axolotl population. Axolotls are widespread enough in both the pet trade and in scientific research that introduction to the wild is plausible. However, all online sources say that they cannot tolerate water temperatures above 75 degrees for prolonged periods, and I would certainly think the water in the glades would get warmer than that in the summer. I'd be really interested to see if it's a tiger or truly an axolotl.

    • @MDestroyerX
      @MDestroyerX 2 года назад +20

      Yes I have 3 Axolotls 2 are sub 1.5 years old 1 is 9 years old and they are not axolotls they only live in Mexico City rivers that are highly polluted and they can not survive in any different areas no matter what attempts where tried they all lead to unfortunate failures so unless someone just released an Axolotl that day then that was 100% not an axolotl

    I think the dark colored or native types are called mud puppies. When I was younger I got them at bait shops and also found a couple in creeks around SE Texas. They do turn into the coolest black and yellow spotted salamanders. Watch out if you put them with crawfish even though the coexist in the wild. The crawfish tend to pester them in an aquarium. The divot in the sand is from the filter outflow, not the salamander digging. As mentioned in lots of comments, not an axolotl, probably a tiger salamander larva. Axolotls are salamanders, which are amphibians, and this is a similar relative of the axolotl, but will morph into a land dwelling adult form eventually.

They do also make wonderful pets but will eventually leave the water and live on land, there’s tons of information online on how to keep them though so if you still want to keep it!! Salamanders are super cool little amphibians and making tanks for them is super fun since you want a water feature in their tank with them! Just remember to use calcium powder on your insects when feeding the little guy so his bones can stay nice and healthy!!!

    Axolotls are native to mexico and they are endangered and an exotic species so they must have been dumped in that pond. They are usually very relaxed and non-agressive amphibians but if startled they can whip their tail and swim away extremely fast. I have four axolotls and they all get on perfectly, although most axolotls prefrere to be alone. They like cold water temperatures and high pH compared to other fish. They will always try to hide because their eyes are very sensitive to bright light, so expect to find them in the shade amongst vegetation. And yes, although they spend most their time in water they do need to breathe air aswell. They can survive in air for about 30 minutes. The axolotl you found was actually quite young. They are baby salamanders actually, thats why they can breathe underwater. But what you found appears not be an axolotl, more a tiger salamander larva.

    Just came across your channel and it reminds me of my brother and I having fun with a net and a bucket when we were kids...from Jersey to Florida, saltwater and freshwater. KEEP ROCKIN' ... im waiting to see if the saltwater bug will bite you. It's an addiction! I live in boring Iowa nowadays but grow and sell saltwater corals. Keep rocking the HUK and get that saltwater tank/pond cycling !

    My 5 year old,Kast, watches your videos and has learned some cool things. He is a natural born herper ( may not be a real word but should be) He has caught a brown snake, tons of salamanders, all stages, and loves all things outdoors! We thought the baby salamanders he caught were axolotls but after some research we discovered they were Jefferson salamander larvae.

      These aren’t axolotls, they are salamander larvae, the only axolotls in the world are in one specific mexican Lake.

    Kept 2 in my aquarium for over 6 year! Would love to have a couple more for my aquariums but no such luck. They called them here in Alabama, sirens. Purchased them at 1” & grew over 2’. Very cool pet

    • @SoraByers
      @SoraByers 2 года назад

      Axolotls and sirens are 2 different things. Also there's no way axolotls can survive in the wild in Florida, they can only be found in a single lake in Mexico. So either he pretended to catch these or these aren't axolotls at all.

    Captive axolotls are a genetic cross between the original axolotls and salamanders (often tiger salamanders) They are considered to be a potential and eventual invasive species. If these are axolotls and released captives they may be starting to take this area over. Definitely not a pure bred as they are not allowed in the aquarium trade
    Very well could be a type of mudpuppy

    I don’t think that’s an axolotl- unless you teleported to Mexico but either way it would be incredibly rare considering their low numbers in the wild it may be a tiger salamander larvae which explains the coppery look

    Hey, Bob. axolotls are becoming extinct in the wild and they can become salamanders by experiencing stress such as being picked up and placed in a bucket. So if you want one of these it would be really cool to buy one that is already used to captivity. I was very sad about this video, but I believe you didn't know this information.
