  • Fencing Master Charles Selberg answers the following question from fencer, Mark T., "What drills / teaching methods does he find the most useful for training in transitions between the various parries?" Maestro Selberg answers this question in two parts. This first section deals with fencing parry combinations in general, and part two(the next video to be posted) deals with the question specifically in relation to sabre fencing. More fencing video content can be found at www.selbergfencing.com including fencing DVDs, books and videos by Maestro Selberg.

Thank you Charles. Your quiet patient style reminds me of my fencing teacher here in U.K. back in the '70's.
he was 'old school'. Never wore a mask. Only had one eye.... Used to taunt me with "I could beat you with a cocktail stick".

What a treat! Damn I miss my old geezer teammate. Of course, I've not forgotten his brilliance at communicating his message. I'll never forget his last lesson. . . .

I think it is because his parries have the intention to bind, as well as that the parries he is showing in this video are "searching" for the opponent's blade rather than directly responding to it. The backup parry is the response to a disengage from the search.

It also has to do with him using a foil for the parries. If you're an epeeist, the "windshield wiper" motion encourages wrist picks (which can at times be advantageous).

Great stuff, though I would have liked to ask Mr Selberg why when going from a Sixte to Octave defensive parry he was moving the entire forearm down, rather than just dropping the wrist to maintain a strong guard as I have been taught? We usually refer to that as windscreen wiper stuff ... all due respect intended.

Speaking as a non-practitioner, how much of this presentation can be applied to hema? That is to say, using something like a sabre or longsword? Forgive me if this question sounds rather obtuse.

true but if you have the blade then you can move it with forearm ....if just the wrist then your opponet has a better changes at getting through.

Im just starting on fencing, just a couple weeks now, i like it very much but im dealing with the hand pain since im not used to it. Any excercise that i could do to strenghten my hand?. Im doing only epee at this moment.

Fencing is the best way to get used to it. Ensure that your hand is relaxed throughout your movements, as over gripping causes the hand to hurt.
You may have heard this but hold the sword as if you would hold a small bird. Too tight and it dies, too loose and it escapes. The same principle applies to using a sword.
As for exercises outside of fencing, I would recommend strengthen the wrist. Linked is a video I found which I feel would help strengthen the hand and forearm. Note you do not want to be at body builder size, but having strength in the arm and hands is important for strong parries and attacks.
      breakingmuscle.com/mobility-recovery/7-exercises-to-maximize-hand-wrist-and-forearm-strength
I have fenced for almost four years and the advice is what I can recommend. However someone that has fenced a lot longer may provide better advice than me. Still hope this helps.
