American Ice Hockey Player Becomes Russian: Brennan Menell on Citizenship, Girlfriend, and Sanctions

- 🇺🇸 🏒🇷🇺 Brennan Menell is an American ice hockey player who has just received his Russian citizenship. He has a professional contract with HC Dynamo Moscow @HCDynamoMoscow and plays as a defenseman in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
Brennan was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and had a stint with the Minnesota Wild. In 2022, he came to Russia for the first time, and in 2023, he became a Russian citizen 🇷🇺📄✅
"I want to get my family out here to show them Russia," he says. "I think Moscow is probably one of the top cities in the world!"
Brennan and our crew took a walk around Moscow, we visited Vkusno i Tochka 🍔 and Stars Coffee ☕ (Russian replacements for McDonald's and Starbucks), and were guests at Brennan’s apartment in Moscow! We talked about sanctions, customs and traditions, patriotism, Russian women, Brennan’s girlfriend, traditional food, music, people in general, his teammates, the best and worst things about Russia, the differences between KHL and NHL, and of course the elephant in the room, the differences between Russia and the U.S.

I am American. I used to coach one of Russia’s top tennis players and have worked with many Russian players over the years. Great people and hard workers. People of Russia, we Americans truly have zero problems with Russia. It’s always the politicians causing all of our problems. Not the people.

You do realize that, for example, Ukrainian women have much of the same values. Putin whom you praise so much is murdering them and their families by the thousands. The "traditional values" is a nice sham that they use to attract red state Americans, a distraction from the war and genocide. They aren't Christian mostly though... or rather consider themselves Christian without being especially devoted to Christianity. It's just in America traditions usually mean Christianity, it's different in Russia because we had that long Soviet period when people didn't care about Christianity or religion overall. That's why New Year is by far the most popular holiday in Russia and Christmass is... well, pretty niche. But Soviet people had very traditional views at family and women role in society despite being atheists. And homosexuality was a crime in USSR, and feminism just didn't exist. Nowadays it's pretty much the same. Of course homosexuality isn't a crime anymore but the LGBT movement is totaly outlawed.

I'm from NY & my best friend growing up was Russian. His parents were very wealthy & I can't tell you how unbelievably generous & caring they were, literally treated me like their own son, took me on trips to Moscow & St. Tropez, I could go on and on. I always defend Russians when people say anything bad about them bc it's simply untrue. Russians aren't the friendliest people at first blush but when they warm up to you, be prepared bc you've now been adopted into another family. 😂😂😂❤❤❤

Greetings from California. I was raised with traditional moral values and discipline as a Russian Christian Orthodox. I loved being with my family, inviting close friends for BBQ, playing games, and taking trips with my family and sometimes with close friends. As a Russian woman, I love being feminine and preparing food that the family enjoys and many other things. Our youngest son loved to cook since he was 8 years old. Now he's the chef at his own home😊. He also does many other things around his house. I taught him well.
It's always a new experience when our friends and we get together. Lots of fun laughing and joking around.

I love how the guy at Starbucks switched to English to Brennon. Showing respect to the customer and his mother language. Won't see that in America. The moment you speak Spanish, they'll start scolding at you 😂 totally different mentality in terms of respecting other cultures and religions!
English is simply the tourist universal language. Any major city around the world will cater to tourists and hire servers who speak English. Now if a Bashkir, Karelian, Chechen, or any other Russian citizen of a different ethnicity tried ordering a coffee in their native ethnic language, I bet 100% the barista will not respond in their language. Even though Russia claims they are multi-ethnic and "respect" all peoples. I'm not even talking about Spanish, German, Ukrainian, or any other foreign language.
@ pavelvodov Karel people are literally a couple dozen thousands of individuals, mostly residing up North on the Karel peninsula. Bashkir and Chechen and 140 other ethnicities that exist and thrive in Russia (given that their population size grows) mostly reside in the respective Republics - constituent entities within the Russian Federation. So, their languages are ethnic minorities languages, and people in other regions (incl in a Moscow coffee shop) cannot be expected to know them at all. Russian is the universal language of communication in Russia, but within all the respective Republics their native language or languages are taught in school within the common curriculum, literature in such languages is studied and supported, state services offered are bilingual (with mandatory registries/translation in Russian so they can be included in the unified Federal registry), and people generally speak whichever language they prefer. So, why put quotation marks on the “respect”?! You are either uninformed or being ignorant and on the defensive, for no reason whatsoever

I'd love to move there. I've visited the country quite a few times, the big cities, and many small towns and hamlets. My Dad was a civil engineer, and took me with him sometimes when he'd travel. Norway, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, China, French Guiana, and Canada. The country that stood out culturally, traditionally, geographically, and demographically was Russia. From the Hermitage, the Bolshoi, and St Basils, to the very remote Yamal peninsula or the area in and around Vladivostok and Nakhodka, it's an amazing and HUGE place!

I vote: NO POLITICS IN SPORTS! It's a Man's job(-and Women's in female sports obviously).
If "no politics in sports" then tell Russians to stop bombing and destroying football fields, ice rinks, and other sports facilities around Ukraine, forcing thousands of Ukrainian athletes, many of them kids, to have to go abroad and find where to train and play. Until then, NO RUSSIA in any international sporting events.

The guy seems like a gentleman.Also very humble.I agree that American and Russian mentality are very different in many ways but of course as humans we have basic general similarities.Also most Americans who study Russian even after 10 years they still sounds like toddlers vs studying English after few years you can be almost fluent. It’s a very hard language to learn and I’m proud to to know fluently.
