GoPro Display Mod For The Hero 8 Black & Hero 9 Black - Why Are There Two Version
Just a simple video questioning GoPro as to why there are two different designs for the Display Mod for the Hero 8 Black and the Hero 9 Black.
One picture, the one from the GoPro website that's been around for ages, has the Display Mod connecting to the Media Mod and the Hero 8 Black by just a HDMI connection.
The second picture, the more recent one from the GoPro advert on the Amazon website, clearly shows that the Display Mod is connecting to the Media Mod and Hero 8 Black via a cable that terminates with both HDMI and USB C. Or at least, it's both these ports that the connection covers in the picture.
My money is on the second picture being the right one.
I don't mention it in the video but I suspect that the extra connection via USB C is so that an external USB C power source can be connected to the Display Mod via its USB C socket. This connection may well be for sharing of power to the Display Mod which then passes it to the battery in the Hero 8 Black via the USB C of the Media Mod. Thereby conveniently charging up and topping up the batteries of both the Display Mod and Hero 8 Black at the same time.
If that suggestion is actually the case then I think that's a good thing.
However, this socket and cable arrangement may be there for other reasons.

I think you're right David, either they have problems with the display mod's built in battery and need to take power from the gopro, or they've crippled it so it can only be used with a Gopro.

Alright Jon. Hopefully I'll get mine soon and will defo work these things out. BTW. I've just signed up for that Xbox game service. Just tried one of the Forza games, I'm totally crap on it but OMG what a blast. It's mega addictive and the graphics are totally off their cake. I signed up for the £1 trial for the month, after that it's £11 a month. There's a cheaper one for PC only and a cheaper one for Xbox only. I've got the £11 one because as well as giving you PC and Xbox games, it also gives the Android xCloud streaming one as well, which launches today. For Xbox and PC there's over 100 games that you can download and play within the subscription but the Streaming one looks very interesting. I'm about to upgrade my GPU on my edit machine, which will also be dead good for games, so will try the PC stuff, the Flight Sim looks outrageous. I've decided to mix it up a lot on this channel and then see what happens and make a decision on the content at the end of the year. Cheers, dave.
@@DavidHarry Forza is a great game, looking forward to watching some gaming vids, i have a poerful gaming laptop i use for video editing, but i with i'd bought a desktop tower pc instead, i couldn't build a pc, the first time i'd turn it on it'll probadly catch fire and burn the house down. Often thought about getting a flight sim, be interest to see how you find them.

Alright Jon. Although I’m crap with keyboard and mouse and don’t usually play PC, I’m gonna start getting into it. The consoles and stuff are great and way more convenient but PCs are defo the way to go for best graphics etc. BTW. I used to build bespoke NLE and DAW systems for a living and am always building stuff. Give me a shout in the comments if you ever need any advice on that stuff. I may actually do a PC build video for my next GPU, I’m gonna see if I’m quick enough to order the new Nvidia RTX 3080 when they have it on order in a couple of days. Cheers, Dave.
Some bizarre stuff going on with GoPro. If they are using HDMI and USB at the same time then you can't charge the camera whilst filming or has the display mod got its own USB? Why do you need a display mod with the front facing camera anyway on the new huge Hero 9?

If they left the USB-c port open couldn't the GoPro used for direct streaming, with the display? And with the right cable, it would also power the Camera?
Hi. Yes, that’s right. There’s also the possibility of the same but with using the dual connection of the HDMI and USB C sockets like in the second picture. There’s something I forgot to mention in the video that I’ve mentioned in the description, you may find it interesting and if my guess is right it could mean that GoPro have done something really good. If the newest picture is correct no remote charging from my battery grip as the usbc port is taken which means taking the thing out of the mod to change batteries.

Hi Scott. If you have a look in the description for the video I mention a scenario that I didn’t say in the video. It’s one that could be a way of dual charging the battery in the Display Mid and the battery in the GoPro. GoPro may have done something very useful. Cheers, Dave.

Yes Scott, it’s in a weird place but could still be useful. If it is indeed the design in the first picture, then the usb socket on the Media Mod becomes available for battery grips but only for the Hero’s battery. One thing’s for sure though, GoPro really have confused this release. Why there’s two promo with completely different cable options is a bit of a mess. Cheers, Dave.

Alright Andre. Having experienced GoPro over the years, suggesting that they may cripple functionality isn't an unfair thing to suggest. Although, there is another possibility that I didn't mention in the video but say in the comments. It could be that the USB C is used on the Media Mod as it would be possible to connect a USB C power supply or battery bank to the USB C on the Display Mod. That power could charge or top up the battery in the Display Mod while at the same time also be passed through the Display Mod to the Media Mod via the USB C connection, as seen in the second picture. This could then feed/share power to the Hero8/9 battery and therefore charge/top up both the Display Mod and the Hero8 from the same external charger/battery bank. This couldn't be done any other way and could be the reason for the design change, once those geniuses at GoPro realised that they'd screwed up :) If this is the reason for the change, it'll get a bit messy with a USB C cable attached to the Display Mod to charge/power both batteries but would be a great benefit to those doing long days of shooting. Or it could be GoPro crippling the Display Mod :) I'll find out soon as I've bought a cable that will allow the Display Mod to be used with the Sony A7iii, if the Display Mod is indeed wired to be a straight HDMI monitor. And if that mad experiment works, I'll also try using the Display Mod as a 2" computer monitor. I'll try most nearly anything if I think it'll get a laugh :) Cheers, Dave.

Am waiting for your #GoProHero9 video. Are you slowing down ??? 😄 Right David, the Hero 9. The media mod is too small to fit the Hero 9 so the only wAy to plug in an External Mic is by using the damn GoPro Audio adapter ?? Thing is the usb is under the battery door i think from what i gathered watching a video today. I have watched numerous videos yet nobody is mentioning external audio in any of the videos i have watched.
Alright Wayne. I’m working at GoPro speed :) I’ve already had them take my money for the 9 and the new Media Mod for the 9 and they’ve still not even given me any acknowledgment of the transaction, let alone any confirmation of shipping. I also paid for the Display Mod last week and have only just had confirmation. As soon as I start getting the stuff I’ve ordered I’ll start on a bunch of videos. I’ve also noticed a lack of certain types of testing, is this an indication that people don’t care for external audio, mics etc.? Maybe if I stop doing what I think are interesting technical videos, audio, mics etc. and just make stupid ‘cat videos’ with the GoPro9, maybe I’ll get more views 😆 BTW. I’ve just upgraded my NLE, it now does 8K. I’ll hopefully be the first person to do a GoPro9 video edited at its native 5K resolution, also one upscaled to 8K. Alright. Have you got a link to that video? I've not seen it but it sounds very interesting. If GoPro have released this thing and there's issues straight away, I just hope those big channels don't do their usual and ignore this stuff. I got an e-mail from GoPro a few days back (Look what just dropped) so I decided to pre-order from them and (dumb as I am) deleted my pre order from amazon. Not sure how smart of a decision that was, I guess only time will tell....
I was thinking about doing the same but even if two do turn up, I don't think I'll have a problem getting shut of one. That said, I still don't have any confirmation from GoPro that my order from their website has shipped yet. It'll be interesting to see if Amazon at least confirm shipment on the their release day. @@DavidHarry GoPro is radio silent about my order. But I believe (or hope) that GoPro will ship the "few" Display Mods they had available on their site simultaneously with the Amazon release date.
My order has officially shipped from the Netherlands, but I also received a notification from UPS that my shipment is indefinitely delayed. So here I am wishing that I just kept my pre-order from amazon...
That's a real pain. I've still not had any confirmation of shipment from GP, also the Netherlands, I think all of Europe is covered from there. It'll be interesting to see if my Amazon order ships, maybe Thursday, I think the States are slightly behind us in Europe. Cheers, Dave.

Don't need a display mod now not if the gp9 has front facing screen like the osmo action.... Hahahaha gopro has to be one of the worst companies I have had to listen to on you tube soooo many complaints about there cameras period it makes me think why we all buy into gopro... So Mr Harry why do we buy into gopro's lies and sub standard action cameras equipment that never arrives media mod with mic that gives us false info etc etc dare I say roll on osmo action 2 please please let it be 👍👍👍😂
Alright. I can't speak for anyone else but I buy this GoPro stuff because I must be a big mad dickhead :) It'll be very interesting to see what DJI do. They got it way more right with the Action compared to GoPro and the 8, with just a few small adjustments DJI could kill off GoPro. If they do an Action 2 with proper close focus for vlogging, a built in mic jack and a few other things for picture etc. they'll seriously damage all the other actioncam manufacturers. To be honest, I'm more wondering if they'll do a Pocket 2. The Pocket is my absolute favourite of all the small cameras as far as picture quality is concerned. Cheers, Dave.
