  • In this video, we detail how easy it is to grow koi fat but also discuss the problems and health issues that come with it.
As fish are cold-blooded, with warmer water conditions they will naturally look to eat anything they can find as they are opportunists.
As we always go for the natural approach, we discuss what is actually an expensive koi food and what they would eat in the wild.
Overfeeding your fish just to grow them quickly is unhealthy and it will bring on health issues at some point.

We had a Swiss mountain dog (Bernese) and fed her on raw meat, veg and a good quality mixer. As you say, one firm stool a day. When other dog owning members of our family came for the day there dog would try to eat Gemma's food rather than the processed stuff brought for them. When Gemma died she was 14 years and 5 months.

So…… here is the question from me. What do I do if I want to keep my fish small? Just light feed? I don’t have a big pond and love seeing my little living jewels swimming about. If they get too big I will have to remove them. Biggest is now about 30 cms. Do they get health problems if they stay on the smaller side?

Another good koi video. Certainly gives the other perspective. Depends on what you want in the hobby. Congrats on the 2k subs.🎉 btw. I probably feed THE most expensive pellet koi food. But I don’t feed them much of it because it will ruin my water quality. But likely less if I were to feed them cheaper foods. I do love chucking them bugs and worms and human food; shrimps, various vegetables, avocados, limes, mangoes, berries, oranges, chest nuts, corn, turkey, even lobsters! Not foods that they would find in nature lol. Not a lot either; I swear they are starving all the time. I love watching them eat these. I got to admit it’s much easier to just chuck in pellets especially if you are in a rush. It’s just like it’s easier for us to order take out instead of preparing and cooking our own meals.

Thank you for the info! My pond is being installed in 8 weeks and I want to be a good "fish lady". I feed my cats a raw whole prey model diet. I adopted a chonker 6 months ago. He was 1.5 years old and very overweight. He was getting kibble with the occasional bite of Fancy Feast. I cringed. After 6 months of raw portion control, he is a good weight, his fur is soft and shiny, and yes...the 💩 is much smaller and practically odor free compared to his first couple poops after I brought him home. I want to provide the same fresh species appropriate diet for my future fish. Any insight or future videos would be appreciated.

Don’t worry your gold fish will find a load of natural food in the pond too, best not over feed with the man made versions.

The big problem with feeding koi in your pond is the water become rotten. Keep the water clean, bulk them during the summer, and fast them during the winter.

Part of the reason I don't like these outdoor fishtanks people call ponds. There is nothing in them for the fish to eat other than the pellets people give them, there is no variety. it can't be healthy. Yes they tend to have Anglian water levels of clean water, but water purity ain't everything! My pond currently has the tree above it shedding its leaves, most of them will sink to the bottom. In the deep end there is probably 6ninches of sludge and muck like any natural lake or pond you would find in a field. if I scooped a handful out it will be full of shrimp, water fleas, snails and any number of other bugs. All great food for my fish! All great places for beneficial microbes and bacteria to live.

Most hobbyists feed a good quality koi food plus supplemental food to go with and vary the diet , personally fresh water shrimp, meal worm black soldierfly larvae, fresh water snails , baby crayfish , to name but a few and yes in the summer I feed and feed as when temps hit 24 the koi’s metabolism is on overdrive and requires huge amount of food , my fish are getting large but not one of them has the huge belly you was trying to frighten people with in the clip you was shown , d
Done correctly with the right food and balanced diet in the right temps you can grow koi big and healthy and expect a long life from them , many years of research and development has gone into rearing koi from hobbyists to professionals to scientific researchers , and what we have to remember koi are not wild have not been for many years ,

I'm not saying for an argument. But you don't feed and feed them because they need it, you do it because you want them to grow big. Even in the summer they can go weeks without food. They are eating it because you are supplying it.

Thanks for comment. BTW majority of carp in lakes, ponds that most people classify as wild are farmed and introduced. "wild" carp as everyone calls them have been bred for a lot longer than koi. Your koi would much prefer lake conditions to fend for itself rather than in a pond cage with nothing in it.
