    i'm totally irrelevant with this but i dream of becoming a diver one day, all i do is just snorkelling, but im a smoker, 28years old, and i cant hold my breath for more than 40 seconds. But that video was helpfull, cause once again, as many things in life, it helped me realise that a big part of my self limitation comes from my mind, my anxiety and my fear- fear that has been built on the idea that if you dont breath the very moment of the "moderate discomfort" something bad will happen. They way you suggest self-observation is a form of meditation too! thank you both for this video!

    These strategies helped me a ton! Whereas swimming 25 meters underwater with no fins would normally be pretty challenging, it has now become extremely easy thanks to you and this video! Also, normally my tike for holding my breath was only around 40 seconds, but now with these techniques it has increased more to 1 minute and 30 seconds! These videos are insanely useful and I have no idea why you aren't receiving more views. You really do deserve them.

    I'm a freediving newbie, started almost a month ago and I've fallen in love with this hobby/sport. I started doing dry static apnea exercises two weeks ago and went from 1min30sec to a personal record of 3min15sec just the other night. One struggle for me was to be consistent with my breath-hold duration. And this video is just key to eventually solving that issue. I went from 1min15 (first breath-hold exercise) to 2mins (second) before feeling mild discomfort after applying the relaxation technique. Will continue working on it. Thank you very much!!

    Thanks Gert for providing all these tips and techniques. This was amazing thing to know specially on the 3rd breath hold and how to prevent the anticipation. I literally needed to hear this because whenever I dive deep the moment I turn to ascend my mind always goes to the anticipation and start thinking about the long way up to surface and if I’m going to make it safely. The feeling of stop going into anticipation and predict what’s next and just stay in the present is so great. Loving it. Thanks again.

    This video was fantastic!! First hold: 0:57, second: 1:35, third: 2:17. I couldn't believe the difference one after the other! I really like the idea of switching from relaxation, to the repetitive phrases, it seemed to “reset” the clock in your mind. When I started to feel my stomach twitching/contracting I moved and stretched it a little, it seemed to help. Thanks so much :)

But a few months ago I started having a lot of issues (my country is on a big crisis) that made my training very hard, a lot of anxiety everyday, all that anticipation thoughts appeared over and over! I tried this technique and it's amazing how a mantra helps blocking the anxiety from the mind. Thanks a lot, I'll try it on the pool tomorrow! Cheers from Chile!

    Love your video. I will start training today using your advice. From my personal experience, I know for sure how powerful the mind can be. I have extreme panic attacks for which I take my meds. When I forgot my medication, I used what you call a Mental firewall to distract myself, and it actually helped me come down. My "firewall" was simply trying to solve some math in my head, and it helped to distract my body from "screaming" "I can't breathe, I need more air."

With that you are obviously over oxygenating your body so you don't feel the need to breathe. But doing it with just one big breath and using techniques to control in a pretty incredible way to build a longer breath hold

    This is my first apnea video and i am just starting my curiosity about this amazing exercise! Rookie question - is it okay to let out a little bit of air at a time once you start the period of discomfort? My discomfort is that pressure builds up in my chest so to make it more comfortable i do this. Once i have let out all the air (in tiny increments), i then get vey quickly to "omg i cannot breathe" and then start the anchoring mantra which may be too late because the contractions start and i cant get but a few seconds in after that point. Thanks and subscribed!

    • @gertleroy

    I start holding my breath, after about a minute I exhale the air inside me and continue holding for another 40 or 50 seconds. Should I exhale and continue holding or is it better to hold until the end without exhaling?

    • @gertleroy
      @gertleroy  Год назад +1

      hold until the end. the reason why you (unconsciously) exhale is becajse you're exhaling the high Co2. so when you get rid of high co2 suddenly the breath hold feels easier. the problem is you're also exhaling your oxygen. do if you want to hold your breath longer you need to keep in all the air, and become comfortable with higher Co2

    Hi Gert, great tutorials, really helpful. On the video regarding the mental techniques on how to "fool" the brain on the static breath holds (very interesting by the way), I don't know if you noticed that the subtitles have a lot of mistakes. Thought I should let you know!
    2 questions, I seem to have a problem identifying contractions when I do the walking breath hold training. Can contractions show in different body reactions, like involuntary swallowing or other reactions other than diaphragm vibrations? You mentioned hick-ups in one of your videos, are the contractions normally very obvious and easily recognizable? Any advice, regarding this issue? Question number 2, do you think that 8 rounds of CO2 or O2 tables are enough and that more than 10 rounds per session is too much? Thanks and keep up the good work!

    • @gertleroy
      @gertleroy  3 года назад

      you mean on this video you're commenting on? (How to STATIC APNEA? Tips & Tools for BEGINNERS). - Can contractions show in different body reactions, like involuntary swallowing or other reactions other than diaphragm vibrations? Yes they can. You can sometimes see them in the neck area, or throat. - You mentioned hick-ups in one of your videos, are the contractions normally very obvious and easily recognizable? No always. The first contractions can be barely noticeable, but as you proceed in the breathhold they get more obvious. Also, the more experienced you become, the more you are aware of what really goes on in your body and it will become easier to identify the early contractions. Sometimes, when i'm so much in the zone, i don't even notice them at all because my mind is somewhere else. Only when they become stronger, they take me out of my "zen" zone and from there on it's more like a fight ;-) - Any advice, regarding this issue? Yes, accept the contractions. They're part of a freediver's life. The more you accept, the easier life become. - Question number 2, do you think that 8 rounds of CO2 or O2 tables are enough and that more than 10 rounds per session is too much? I'm not a fan of co2/o2 tables. They have value, cause the more you hold your breath the more you get used to breathholding (obviously) but i wouldn't go mad on these tables. Instead, focus more on finding a way to calm your mind. 10 rounds of co2 tables can easily wear you down. Focus more on the feeling, not on the numbers. cheers :-)
