I'm 67 now and wheelchair bound. That automatically slows you down. The bones dont move like they used too. My 4 children and their wives and grandkids do the things I cant manage alone. I basically cook, do dishes, visit, weed the raised bed gardens brush the dogs and donkeys, kiss my alpacas and come up with fun brilliant ideas 😁 life is blessed and filled with love. My entertainment is watching life on my organic farm.....endless shenanigans between the humans and animals !

I have a home on a lake. It's a small cottage also but not quite as old as Fairland Cottage. Every day I open my blinds and look out over the water. Sometimes there are Canada geese swimming around and other times swans. It grounds me for the day. I am a retired nurse and am grateful to have this time for myself now. I visit grandchildren but always come home to my little cottage. Thank you for sharing your life with us and reminding us all to enjoy the simple things.

To slow down and be kind to myself I stopped writing lengthy “To Do Lists”. I used to have a daily list that even “Wonder Woman” couldn’t accomplish. Now, when I write in my bullet journal every morning I have “TPFTD” at the top... “Top Priority For The Day”. By doing this, I require myself to accomplish that task, and other major tasks can wait for another day. Pace is important. Thank-you for this great video today Naimh. It's important to understand that our mental health is just as critical as our bodily health. The stress we expose our minds to will affect our whole body and vice versa. As beings who suffer from conscious awareness, being in a harmonious mental state will make the world itself more balanced. As humans we get along better if our minds are healthy.

So true, mental health is so easily neglected. Media chooses to focus on external appearances and so physical exercise is often emphasized way more. I think it is as important to focus on the inside and be balanced.

Niamh, you have touched upon the reality and the grave disease of 21st century...Go fast, always be in the fast lane, just be on the go, go, go Be busy, Just Hustle...It is important for us to slow down. Experience life in a slow way, savor things slowly, breathe slow and don't think about the next task, immerse in the thing at hand even if it is just soaking up in the sun. Let's slow down on our own, we don't need a corona to slow us down.

One of my favorite quotes, which I have on my kitchen windowsill, and from children's book author/illustrator, Tasha Tudor, who lived to the beat of her own drum: "I don't believe in hurry." I think you'd enjoy learning more about her life - you have so much the same philosophy. She passed in 2008 at the age of 92, but lived on a piece of property in Vermont with beautiful gardens, a cat, a parrot, milked her own goats, and raised Doves, and loved Corgis. With as full and "busy" as her life was, she didn't believe in hurry and accomplished so much in her lifetime. P.S. I enjoyed your e-book immensely!

In John Eldridge’s book “Get Your Life Back” he initiates “the one-minute pause”; a break in the morning the afternoon the evening or several times a day and night- where you just stop. breathe Meditate on the moment. Be grateful be quiet commune. Our church did this book as a Bible study and the feedback from my church family is so sweet. How each one of us has incorporated this “pause” into our days and how it has given us perspective about ourselves is so varied and interesting. But also so similar. The world is so different if you actually take time to look at it!

You are a real woman gardening in such a pretty white sweater and not having mud all over it!! (We need the story of that sweater. I am a knitter and something like that must have a story if not on it’s origin, maybe on the role it has played in your life?). I just purchased the ebook and so look forward to a relaxing Sunday afternoon reading. I don’t relax well at all. The best ways I have found are to sit outside (I live in Texas so there are too many days spent indoors), take a walk enjoying the outside again, or practicing this meditation of closing my eyes and then going through my sense: what do I smell, feel, taste, hears, and then either with open or closed eyes, what do see. It takes a while if you really sink into it but you start to enjoy life in this moment and realize what may be nagging at you and can let it go. Thank you for all of your content!

I slow down by not doing all my cleaning and housework in one day. Being in the cleaning business for the last 35 years I kind of expected myself to get it all done in one day but now at the age of 53 I really can’t it just causes stress. I do it a little bit every day and that keeps it up, if something doesn’t get done then so be it,it’s not the end of the world life is far too short.
Thank you for your E book,I’ve read through it and absolutely love it I will be using a lot of your ideas.

One of the best things I did was get off Facebook. I noticed a dramatic change in my whole being. I started seeing I was trying to hang onto people I didn’t know well. Trying to impress them with jokes and memes...stories about different things. My daughter died in a car accident almost ten years ago. She was seventeen and my only child. It has been very quiet in my house. I shut down. Slowly. Methodically, I was letting go to die. But, I stopped Facebook. I stopped watching the news. I stopped watching people on RUclips who are political. I was very much into politics.
I know what’s getting ready to happen with this world. But, I cannot change anything about the outside world. I can change my little part of my world.

The first way I slow down is by watching one of your videos. It prepares me for whatever I am up against for the day. It’s sort of like my meditation, because I can’t be disciplined enough to sit down and meditate. But when I watch one of your videos, I imagine myself as a bird or bug in Fairyland Cottage, and watch what you do. Just the overall picture of what you do and what you say is enough to set me in place. Then when I’m finished with the video, I take your words with me and use them throughout the day. You can’t imagine how much more at peace I am.

I really love how my favorite kind of day is described as ‘soft’ in Ireland. And I loved hearing you describing it as a way of being as well. I am a quiet person by nature and I think soft describes me too. I live alone in a small house by the sea, slow is my way of life, now that all my children are grown and gone. But when I go out into the world it can feel out of my quiet & slow comfort zone. I found that bringing a book is a comfort. Just holding it or having one on the seat of my car or in my bike basket. And knitting too, something small like a sock in progress to bring along, is calming knowing it’s with me.

I wind down by doing homework with the kids, cooking for my family, eating, do dishes and some chores, just what i want to do on that time. Then it's me time ❤️. Sometimes i read a book, do a hobby or i pamper myself with a foot, face or hand care. Sometimes i just sit on the sofa listening to some music. Or i watch calm blogs such as yours. I play with the two cats we have running around here. And i go for an evening walk. It's sooooo soothing tot go out and see the world slow down; people go in their houses, dogs are being walked out, see less cars driving around, lights on on dark days, etc. And before sleeping i meditate. ❤️

I had to disconnect from quarrelsome and negative people. I just don't let myself get in silly disputes that do nobody any good! Life is so short and precious and we feel this even more at this time of the year with winter again in the wing. I am spending as much time as possible outside in the crisp, clear autumn weather. I play classical music while I gently put my yard plants to bed for the winter. It seems almost sacred.

I find they instantly fill my home (and mind!) with positive energy. Since many years I too practice sustainable living...but it wasn't exactly "slow living" while raising my sons/home schooling /working part-time. I always had massive to-do-lists...Now, I work 40+ hours per week from home... and am so glad I have come across your videos..they really inspired me to focus on what's important, and do everything with love - even if it takes longer. Now I enjoy all my tasks. Thank you. Best wishes from Canada

what I learned from you and others made me think that slowing down is doing things with consciousness, doing things intentionally and being more mindful instead of rushing through life, trying to get everything done. It helps me, besides all the things you mentioned above, to focus on my movements, focus on one task at a time, being grateful (even for "little" things like food, warmth...) and more appreciative of the good things, even though it might look, that there isn't much to be thankful for. Going out in nature, using all my senses helps me to have more holistic experiences which then I can than experience at home / at work as well because I become more aware of things. Sometimes slowing down means the pace, but sometimes it's enough to be more mindful even if your moving fast. And also doing things, I want to do (not only have to!), which gives me the feeling of control over my own life, being creative, doing things that come from within, even if they are rather humble and by far not as professional as your DIYs ... and focussing more on the task itself rather then only the result...

I used to multitask a lot, which got things done over time but seemed a little chaotic. I know there’s some things to multitask, like when doing laundry, but I felt so much more Zen and could actually meditate while doing things when I started doing one task at a time from start to finish.

Beautiful and thoughtful video as always. Being away from work during the pandemic for some considerable time and having the time to consider what I wanted from life made me realise that I could not go back to the frantic and all-consuming work life that I had and that I must slow down at the age of 63 after 45 years of full time work. I am now working for half the hours and feel immensely better for it. Financially things will be very tight as we are far from wealthy but what I am gaining is worth so much more and I am not interested in a lot of possessions. My relationship with my husband is improved because I am much less stressed and am generslly more relaxed and have time to "smell the roses". We are living simply, enjoying daily walks and I spread out chores during the week rather than dreading doing them all over a precious weekend and I actually enjoy work a lot more now when I am there. Life is short and I am certainly glad that I made the decision to slow down and work less. Your videos are a joy every Sunday. Much love and blessings to you 💗

I have a hard time with things not staying like I left them. I can clean my home but it gets dirty again. I can eat, but I have to eat again. Sleep, kindness, work. It's all again, again, again. It stresses me out and unmotivates me. I give up on cleaning and live in a space I hate because I hate repeating myself.
What do you recommend? I watch you and love how you think and act, but whenever I do it it doesn't feel right

    Madam,
it's me, the boring one who always wants French subtitles! I am writing to you here, under this video, because I do not know where to reach you personally. I have good news: I have found how to activate subtitles in almost all languages in the world! I had a hard time understanding it because on some Korean videos (I love Hamimommy, or Nyangsoop), for example, it is done much more automatically. You just have to click several times on "subtitles": the first time, RUclips only offers English, but by starting again, the list of all the available languages appears on the screen!
In the meantime, I have greatly improved my English while watching you! My motivation to understand you was great because your videos are awesome! So much so that I continue to watch them in English! It's surreal! Thank you for all the good you do me!
Good luck with the containment (I heard that Ireland was confined again)! This promises us still great videos in perspective!

Soft... This is the most important word here. Actually, it's what I'm doing in my life now. Don't know how to explain it because my English is not very good but if I say "being soft" with myself, with things and people, with life, that's the best way to have a peaceful day 😊.
    Thank you Niamh 🙏💐

It has taught me to spend time in my garden, watch my plants grow, slow down when cleaning my home & bless it as I clean & savor the meals I'm preparing for my family. I use to be so frazzled but I now see how these are the important things in life. I also picked up my camera & tried to capture these ordinary moments that I now treasure as EXTRAORDINARY. I’ve begun taking periodic breaks. I’ll do some chores either in the house or in the yard, and then break for lunch or coffee. I used to work for hours on end, not wanting to stop. I think I enjoy life more now. Instead of trying to get as much done as possible, I enjoy the satisfaction of a job completed and goals reached without becoming obsessive about it.

And today there is a new video - what a wonderful weekend!
I am a very calm person but I get stressed easily. I walk very fast but in other acitivities I‘m slow.
I love to walk my dogs to slow down. I walk with them twice a day in nature and watch them, it‘s lovely.
Gardening, cooking and cleaning help me to slow down as well as long as I take my time and don’t do too much. Sometimes sitting in the garden with a cup of tea and watching the pollinators or my dogs playing is the best part of the day.

Thank you for reminding me of the need to slow down. I am bad at this, although getting better at not being hard on myself. My job is desk bound and I am working from home these days. But this allows me to think about using seasonal veg and not depending on the supermarket for lunch items as I used to when based in an office. Also, as I sit in my kitchen now, I love listening to the ticking wall clock. Cosy and comforting. Autumn is a wonderful time of year. 🍃🍂

Such a lovely video. I don't know why, but I slow down when I'm cooking or baking, it feels like I can't focus my attention anywhere else otherwise I will burn the food or forget to add something. To me feels like a meditation. Also reading by a window, meditating outside, gardening, fixing things and lying down with my cats of course. Cats are a very good example of how to relax and enjoy calm.
Now I'm also adding to my slow down routine writing, either poems or verses, or a tiny story. Sometimes also writing about what I'm grateful for. It takes some time to do it so it's really great.
Thanks for your videos, I find them always so relaxing and inspiring.

This video is a confirmation of what my intuition has been telling me for the past month. For me to be to kind to myself more and to not put pressure on myself on being productive and doing a lot of things. Sometimes, life's distractions can take us out of focus on the things that really matter. But our health and well-being are those things that must be at the top of our priority list. Loved this video! Some of the things I do....
1 - Start my morning, outside (weather permitting), with a cup of coffee and nature just taking it all in.
2 - I have stepped back into my creativity with art and writing. This literally "forces" me to slow down, take my time, and remember things do not need to be perfect.
3 - I stopped putting deadlines on myself, but allowed small steps towards goals to come forward. Taking those in stride.
4 - I started following my heart and inner child again - remembering things aren't always as serious as I make them out to be. In fact, life can be a lot of fun and taking time to remember to just play in 99.9% of everything I do helps.

Lovely video, Niamh. Recently, I've stopped making "to do" lists and instead began writing "accomplishment" lists. Let me explain. Rather than facing a long, daunting list of things I need to do (many of which I often don't get around to simply because the list is unrealistic and then I feel like I've failed) rather I begin doing the tasks I feel the energy and inclination to do in the moment and once I've completed a task, I write it down and check if off! This motivates me to complete another task so I can add that to the list. It slows me down in that this approach respects my varying rhythm of mood and energy levels from one day to the next. Plus, there's no incomplete tasks on the list, just a record of how far I got today! xo Enza

If I find myself being clumsy I take this as a sign that I'm not really paying attention. In order to pay attention, I slow down my emotions and try not to cram so many to-dos in so short a time. I consider my health and state of mind more important than getting things done. I will eventually "get to it". I don't consider it a "failure" if I don't do it right away.

Slowing down is often a struggle for me too. I have been a working woman and mother for most of my adult life and that sometimes adds to that feeling of needing to hurry everything. I have learned several of the things you have-that not everything is going to get done, and to put myself first, especially if I'm not feeling so well as happened today. When hormones get the better of me, and a migraine sets in, allowing myself the space to retreat, lie down, drink some nice warm tea, be in a dark and quiet room, and asking others to take care of meal prep and cooking if what is needed for me to then recover by day's end. (I am feeling quite well now, so I did all the right things to take care of myself!) I really liked your question, "Where am I being hard and where am I being soft?" I have asked myself a similar question: "What can I say 'yes' to that is usually a 'no' for me?" This question started when I had young children and I found myself saying 'no" more than I liked. I realized that everything was much more joyful when I decided that I could say 'yes' to more things-playdates, going to the park instead of going straight home to start those loads of laundry, or simply putting down the work to watch the clouds go by and breathe a bit more deeply. I often feel that our goal orientation in society brings unhealthy time tables and expectations and that we can have moments of rebellion by stopping the "progress" and allowing the beauty of the world to bathe us in love and light. Then we are truly breathing and in better harmony with each other and with the world. The thing is, it doesn't take that long to do these things, we just have to remember to do them.
