i just got ( 10 days ago ) a 5555N II from Scotss Radio- and he adds a 4 pin ( or 5 pin ) rg45 adapter.. after he tunes and mods it.. he even makes ya a YT video..lol.. I am currently making the home made dipole you taught us!!! Your videos always rock! greeting from Waldo County Maine - Maine307 73 ! .. I got the Ka-Pow electric mic.. love it. too many button on the radio for us old timers to learn!
Great channel, great video! Appreciated the mic hacks. I used a Tunner SSK with a SBE Trinidad and a yagi beam antenna back in the 70s, it made me king of the hill !
Sidekick wins. Had one coupled with a Craig 23 channel base station and Archer 1/2 wave ground plane mounted atop 30’ mast on roof about 45 years ago. I was 14 years old. Thanks to mom and dad I was able to become a cb fanatic! Had a D104 before the Turner but it had feedback (squealing issues we could resolve so I traded the 104 in for the sidekick and there were no issues. Thanks for the video
On my quag 6 i have also tried many mics. My best luck has been with thee astatic d104 lolipop which i removed the amp section from and added a tone control board sounds amazing. The 636 and red devil also sound good. The only thing i like on the stock mic is channel selector, but even that can be a pain accidentally change channel and not notice. Great video. My q5 has been a disappointment. I have not had very good luck with anytone at all to be honest . I love the size of the q6. Thats about it.
I love those old mics built for the USA, now there are only Chinese cheap junk and Japanese mics are expensive and often don't support CB radio only "freband radio" which doesn't require an RX connection. It is difficult for me to judge which microphone is better, they are all great, the best in SSB always sound balanced microphones in the acoustic band or dynamic. Great radio channel, good health to you :)
great test! imo- the last turner wins, followed by the turner 3 then the stock mic. really digging your vids, especially the first one i saw was the overhaul of the radiophone mark vii- makes me think maybe i could fix mine up. thanks for all the great vids!!
Thanks for the tests! One note, the Anytone stock mic is indeed an electret condenser element that uses +5vdc on Pin 1, the "modulation" pin. Technically, you should use a capacitor there to block the voltage from interacting with the other microphones circuitry. It's very low current, so it probably won't damage anything, but just good engineering practice to block it.
Noticed that the ssk had nicer swing where most all the others were topped out and stayed stuck on top end the ssk would drop back between words and peak to top on modulation leading to thought there may be overmod quality happening
I love my anytone 6666. I was surprised that the stock mic actually sounds pretty good. I use a modified Astatic 636. I got the mic from Tim over at snake radio customs. He wired the proper plug on it also, so no adapter needed. I have a non modified 636 mic to compare to the modified one. The modified one has a more full sound, like the full frequency range, low to high. Also the F’s and S’s are clear. My voice is clearer overall and less muffled. I also talk more on SSB than on AM myself. My anytone 6666 isn’t stock. I got it from truck cb sales with his “truckerized” modifications. I looked at my radio on the scope and spectrum analyzer at the school I go to when I got it. And it’s clean and at 14.3v it does about 65 watts average and 120 pep. And surprisingly it just gets a little warm when I talk a lot. I have it driving a 4 pill 2879C.
Cool test sesh! There are unique tones from each, but my pick is the Cobra Echo mic. I hope to see them at the truckstop, like in the late 90's. Cost as much as a whole radio, and did not look as cool as that one, with one lil hit of echo.
The Cobra mics had a little more bass. I think if you had them on the scope they were most likely "flat topping" a little. That would explain the fuzzy edges. I would like to hear the Cobra desk mike cranked back a scosh. Great video and pretty informative, Thanks.
Yeah, the SSK was the best to my ears here. It has fuller sound with just the right amount of presence in the audio, that's the one to run. I don't know if you have an airport or an airbase close to your qth, but that noise during the qso with the guy in BC was some radar noise. I get that sometimes here as i am very close to an airforce base here where i am.
Hey, John great to see your video and yes you're correct the stock mike is just a dynamic mic. etc. I have a 5555n etc. great radio and circuit board in mine. Like the radio and talk skip all the time with it. Cheers and thanks for the video. shared over at the hangout. Drew NY202
Great to hear a nice quality old school QSO on the band. I liked the Turner too! And the old cobra desk mic was just like the Realistic way back in the 80s. I had one, nice mic!🎙️
Thanks. I have one of those old realistic mics, the head is different, But the rest is the same as the cobra, and both are great mics. Take care, 73's from 151 SC.
2nd and forth mic are over modulated and quieter than the stock mic which was full bodied clean and clear....also louder. The third mic with the stiff cord is a throw away.... very narrow banded ( no body all 2Khz), 5th and 6th also very over doing the top end, adding a lot of hiss....didn't care for them The turner super sidekick was the closest to the stock mic....believe it or not....they're right....the stock mic sounded the best. Pro audio engineer here!
For my ears, the best is the Sidekick. I suggest to redo without the high cut in the receiving transceiver an to add some Astatic vintage mic in the test.
No Turner+2's No D-104's??? What in Tarnation???....Turner SSK for sure, The Turner has always been a favorite of mine. Great to see you again Mower Junky, I hope all is well. 73's UDX4570 Palm Springs, Ca 👋🤠
Just Saying, the old style cobra 7.5 volt sounds great, but I've Always Been A Turner Fan ! Love The Super Side Kick ! But, In A Mobile Situation That I'm Usually Doing I Think A Turner 575MB With Tone & Gain Works Best For Me !
1st! Wouldn't you have been pissed if you found out the camera in the garage stopped recording before you began the test? lol I think the best mics were the Super Sidekick and the Cobra DynaMike desk mic. The stock mic did make you sound 20 years younger though. 🙂
All where good the t side kick you could see the volume go up and down with voice tone clear sound. most tell me my t, three sounds best on my Galaxy Saturn. I'm upstate SC Aceman
I was about to talk on 38 the other day until I heard someone playing carnival music and all sorts.of other sounds, felt like I was at the circus looking for pop corn and cotton candy. Turner sounds great, do like the sound of the cobra and stock mic. I wonder how the d104 hand mic would sound?
The stock mic works alright, but I don't know why everyone says to leave it, of course there are better sounding mics out there. And you may want to throw a voltmeter on that radios audio pin because I understand what you're saying about the pin having 8vdc on it, but there most certainly is voltage on the audio in pin too. Not all dynamic mics will be affected by it, but it is there. There's voltage on the ptt pin too, it's how it gets the up and down by use of different sized resistors. No resistance at all detected is the signal for the radio to key up. I think that's why a lot of folks have shyed away from trying other mics on the quad 6, because you'll find there's DC voltage on 2 of the 3 pins that are actually needed for an alternative mic. The interface I built to connect all of my radios to the same audio set up has a tantalum cap inline with the audio anyways so any radio I hook to the interface will have the current blocked if it has it anyways. There wasn't a whole lot of definitive information to go on when I searched online. It was just a long winded experiment that wound up being a lot of audio gear connected up to everything, even my computer for Echolink and SDR. In the end it was worth all the effort, there's a lot you can do to improve both receive and transmit to adjust for any conditions thrown at you. It's really helpful on the receive end of things being able to cut out unwanted sounds, and enhance weaker signal voices way down in the hash. I guess if I were stuck with the stock mic, I wouldn't be too awfully disappointed, but it usually just comes down to a matter of preference, and I really hate having separate mics for multiple radios. All the naysayers are the reason I do a lot of the things I do. As soon as someone says it can't be done, or isn't worth bothering with, that's my cue to get to work on it.
I mean it is a very opinion based thing based on alot of varibles as well but i like the sound of the sound of the supersidekick then probably between the cobra desk mic and stock mic for second place
Easy mod to the standard microphone, the front clips off revealing a tiny mic hole, just drill a larger hole & it works fine. I do have an Av-908 desk mic & a KPO Power mic, but the 9900 doesn't like them on Ssb for some reason, so interested to see how you get on. The Anytone stock mic is an electret microphone, also known as a condenser microphone. It does have a small voltage for the Electret element supplied from the radio on the audio line. The only mics there that would be an advantage over all the others would be the Turner +3s, due to their Compression circuits. Otherwise you'll be hard pressed to beat a quality electret microphone used with the well-tuned radio designed for it. I have Turner +3s, but I still use the radio-relative stock Electret mics... because there's no question they sound good, aren't lacking or overwhelming in modulation or overdriving the radio... and were FREE with the radio. I break out the compression-wielding Turners when the DX/Skip is rolling in good. They seem to work fine with the Bias voltage from the radio on the audio line, on the Electret setting of your radio. They are louder on the Dynamic setting. Adjust your mic volume accordingly. By the way, the Turner JM+3 is not necessarily a "mobile" hand mic. It has no noise-cancelling feature, and will amplify everything else, so it's best use is on the base. (Of course, I use 5, 1.5 volt, alkaline watch batteries in a heat shrink sleeve to power the Turner JM+3 hand mic, since the A175 battery is not cheaply or easily available anymore).
#1 & #2 Just like you said, then #3 cobra desk, The turner +3 may be 2nd or 3rd if backed down. Coming in last is the stiff cord. Great Demo! Mower Junkie. QSX MJ-151Test/Freq. incorrect. the stock Anytone mic is a electret condenser element and uses the +5vdc on pin 1 audio line.
I agree the Turner Super Side Kick sounded the best. None of the mics sounded bad but the Turner SSK had the edge. 73 Joe
I still own a Turner +3 from my CB days back in the 70's, hope to purchase a Anytone AT6666 and add it if it works now that I'm into Ham radio.
