I disagree with the other guy that said you "Mower Junkie" in a reply he made that you are not getting any younger and seems like saying that you just stick to one antenna. Here's why I disagree. The reason why I like what you're doing is because you are giving us viewers an idea as to which antenna may or may not work for our individual needs and thank you for doing so. Take care and 73's.
Thanks for the shout out my friend. Your station is top shelf!
Antennas are the Magic of radio...enjoy!
Right on Mower Junkie !! You’re gonna love that antenna . Congrats .
Thanks Dallas, I'm already loving this antenna!
Glad it’s working for you. I ordered mine today. I ordered the V-5000.
Not sure how I havent heard your channel yet but glad I found it Gatekeeper in Ga enjoying it
I haven't even finished putting up my A-99 and I already know what my next antenna's gonna be! LOL! Watched your put it together video and now this one. Thanks for both! 73 from Northern Nevada.
I think you need to change your name to "Antenna Junkie". 😁
lol, Sometimes I would agree with You. Take care Joe, 73's
I disagree the Mower Junkie is catchy for RUclips. Although you could add to the original. The mower and antenna junkie .
I was thinking the same thing.
@Jim Bishop what is there to learn? Flip it over to ssb and talk
I believe we made contact today. 503 Oregon waving.
I'm gonna get a Maco because of you MJ
I still have our Hygain CLR2 antenna. We took it down about twenty years ago. I’ve been watching your antenna building videos and one day I’m going to build a dipole. I remember the Super Magnum antenna from the 60s and 70s. It looked almost identical to your Maco.
Super Maxim and Mighty Magnum, Hustler Jam Ram, Shakespeare Big Stick, Wilson Alpha V-58, Avanti Sigma II 5/8, Hy-gain CLR-2 & Super Penetrator 500, Antenna Specialists Ringo & Starduster, Taylor Grand Slammer GLR-4, Larry's LW-150, Astroplane, and many, many more dominated the local skyline in the 1970s.
Radio Shack sold a crappy copy of the Hygain CLR2 with a cheap coil in it that would burn up with anything over 200 watts.
Gotta love that Uniden P Washington. Love to have one. 73, Al
I am running the V5000 which is the same as the V58 but it can handle 5000 watts these are the best 2 antennas out there for skip hands down
Hard to beat a good tried and true 5/8 wave metal antenna.
Back in the 70's I tried the CLR2, the Hygain Penetrator and the Sigma 5/8 that this antenna is patterned after. Of the 3 antenna's the Sigma had the best bandwidth but the Penetrators radials were more robust in bad weather. Avanti used that same idea where each radial or beam element had a thin stinger at each end and the hardware would always loosen up and make the elements look funky. This Maco doesn't use the stingers so it's a better design.
I bought a Maco 5/8's a year or two ago , and I haven't got it up yet . I'll be putting it up before the summer's over this year . I'll probably make a video of it too . I've been using an IMAX-2000 for around 11 years now , and a Antron for quite a few years before that . I can't wait to get an aluminum antenna back up again after all these years .
oh yeah that thing I would run for a while for sure looks awesome that will be my next antenna nice
Very cool, i'm loving mine!
Wow that antenna looks and works awesome
Would love to see a shootout between your Maco 5/8 and a MAX 2000 optimizer !!!
Great Job!
Thank You :)
Your videos have been a huge inspiration for messing around with antennas. I have a 5/8 workman on my roof right now, but I am testing a 3 element beam mower Junkie inspired. Thanks for the awesome videos, hope to catch you on lsb one day. 73's
Thank you so much! Good luck with your beam. 73's and Merry Christmas.
I was hearing you loud and clear on my Unide 980 with a K30 in my pickup truck barefoot in Indiana. Of course, I didn’t try to reach out due to my mobile setup. 73’s
I wish you would have tried, I talked to a few barefoot mobiles yesterday. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
It's *_named_* the Maco V58 but at ~19' 10" it's closer to a 1/2 wave than a true 5/8 and uses a voltage-fed shunt style of matching instead of a true 22' 4" 5/8 wave using a current-fed T-matching network.
It's advantage is a higher TOA and can perform better on short DX and getting up over nearby ridges better than a full-size 22' 4" 5/8, but the full-size 5/8 still has more gain and a flatter TOA for better long-distance "local" DX like ~100 miles +/- or intercontinental DX and tends to have a lower percentage of issues of feedline radiation and RFi in the shack than the Maco because of the typical current-fed T-matching network on the true 5/8.
- Wrapping a choke in the coax below the Maco is usually a must to alleviate RFi.
I am doing a real time comparison between the v58 and a super penetrator 500 true 5/8 wave. The penetrator 500 is clearly better
Chaos....stations on top of each other
Very Nice John! Years ago i ran a Sigma 5/8 Wave and I am hoping to get one of these Maco V5/8 to try out soon. 73's, 311 Northern IN.
I am thinking on getting back into cb again
Nice job 151. I have a V 5000 sitting here in the box. If you and the better - half need a vacation. Come on down to Fl. I have a Guest bedroom waiting on U all. And if you get bored while on vacation , we can put up my antenna. LOL. ( DESPERADO 56 north of Tampa Fl.) waving a hand my friend. BE SAFE EVERYONE 73's
Copy that, Desperado! If I'm ever in Your neighborhood, I'll be sure to lend a hand.
Take care 56, 73's from 151 SC.
Awesome video 151, can't wait for you to kick the tires and let us know what you think.
that guy said something about hopefully not getting any winds with that maco...they have been updated and have a second pipe inside the base that negates the folding over that used to happen. hasnt neen a problem since early 2000's
Its a beast!🤗👏👍🏼
LOL.....finally got you today at 2pm Friday 0715/22......was trying on a new sirio 3 element but it was only on a 12' test poll.....so went to my dipole wire in the tree for the contact!!!LOL 👍
Nice! That Dipole was working well. You're gonna love that 3 element when you get it higher. Take care, Thanks for the contact.
In the 80,s I had a Sigma 58 look,s just like that.
Man, you've got some good ears my friend!
Hey JT, the antenna looks awesome up in the air, imo you can't beat a 5/8th wave they are fantastic for skip work, very nice video a really enjoyable video to watch.
I heard the chorus of 151’s when you fired that maco up ! UDX2Six7 👋
Nice 👍!
I’m waiting on my v58 now can’t wait to get it up and going useing a galaxy 44hd with a dx400 for a base station 73s from nc 276 (aka Renagade) on channel 16
I put an A99 without grounplanes around 60ft to the base and it wasn't great. Since my dad threw away 2x avanti Sigma IV's I'm now using a Sirio 2016. Considering making something like the Maco or a copy of a sigma IV but I think I will try directional again. I'm stuck in a bowl here and not much other than DX.
Don’t listen to the trolls, keep putting interesting video out there. Antennas are a big part of cb and ham radio. WR 038 aka , UDX38. 😎🇺🇸🎙📡
I have a Sirio tornado coming soon. Maybe I will be hearing on the radio soon. I live on the northeast corner of SC.
Ótimo vídeo trabalho gualidade total parabéns guerreiros bazuka Foz do Iguaçu pr Brasil 🇧🇷🦈 73
Try a Sirio Vector 4000.. It is a clone of the old Avanti Sigma 4 3/4 wave vertical. In my 50 years of playing radio, no vertical I tried for 11 meters ever beat that Sigma 4. That thing is a monster...try one and you will never look back, And no pesky radials to deal with.
I love my maco v5000!
Just a suggestion if you use only the short section on your ground radials you will raise your angle of propagation and increase your skip capabilities
295/WWS5070 Maine 👋 sounding good bud
Sounds great. I heard you on the air over here in South Texas (on the Mx border). I'm using a Uniden Washington as well with a Sirio GPS 27 antenna. It's cheap and works great. I talk from here to Australia, Maine, Florida, Minn and Dakotas all the time. My next purchase will be the icom 718 or 7300 (if I can save up enough). Take care, talk soon. wr 1690/169 South Texas (Laredo)
Nice antenna John. Still waiting to hear you down here in NZ but skip has died from the USA to us. 73s Steve
...yep, and right when I was building my Quad to DX with me mates Daown Unduh. 😥- I sure miss my friend & neighbor Eli, his Joe Gunn always cooked DX real well.
great video as usual
Awesome antenna I talk all over with it 335 Illinois hope to make contact with you some day.
151 I have heard you a few times and will keep trying to get a contact with you from hombase and mobile station. Also love the videos from 001 gordy the gas passer 68 division Northern Ireland ( UK ) 73s my friend
John, Did the SWR change for the better, when up on the house? 73 2DX21 Mike
Im in NY this week I'll give you a shout from my car lol.
Very cool! I'll be listening for you. Stay safe 360, enjoy your trip.
So this is the band all the 75 ops came from lol
Are you near Greenwoods? I brought one of those about 25 years ago. Still kicking. Clean it a few times but loving it.
Sweet, did you use a lighting arrester
Are you running any power.??? I have that same antenna. It,s been up for many years. I put up a Maco V quad and it was interfering with the Maco 5/8......... I took the V quad down. The 5/8 worked as good as the V quad,, lol
hey... awesome vid....... why not try FM ???? with a other rig ?????
You got the right one baby ahhhhhh..lol
In the future, please do a ground-to-car comparison as you used to between 1/2 and 1/4 wave antennas. Health for you, great antenna, beautiful radio.
Really interesting in hearing the chatter from the UK myself is there any chance you can put distance between stations if you get a chance occasionally.
you are My Master Adrian 161AZ77 Poland !! :)
look at my Medison and Wshington .. horozontal or vertical
Hi there mower junkie. I really like this video because I just bought one of those Maco V58 hope to be getting it up in the next few weeks. Still have a lot of snow up here in Vermont. But I wanted to ask you if you know who is good at repairing that radio you’re talking on the Washington I have one just like that. I’ve had it for years but it doesn’t receive anymore. I’d love to find somebody that could Dipshit I would appreciate any info if you know of someone that can do that hill thanks a lot 73s to you they’re 151
Any chance you could show us the lift up setup you have love it down under Australia 🇦🇺😎👍
check out this video, it shows when I built the hinge mount. ruclips.net/video/u4hw3ogGpjA/видео.html
👍
What's that bad buzz sound
Have a question about the v58. How long are the radials from the end to center of the antenna. Cant find anything online about dimensions. I have limited space. Love your channel.
each of the ground radials are about 8.5' long.
@@MowerJunkie Thanks for the reply. You have inspired me to get back on the air after 30 years off. Love your channel. Keep the videos coming.😀
@@johnnyhawk329 Thank You so much, I hope to hear you on the air. 73's
the only state with one syllable
You do realize that you change antenna's more often then Infantrymen change their underwear... If they wear any at all. But I digress... Just when I think you have me convinced on the style of antenna I am gonna put up you pitch another fastball across the plate and I have another swing and a miss! What is the best antenna over a metal roof to use the roof as the ground plane?
Hi 151. Question, thr base of the antenna on your maco is hie high. I have a maco and curious whete you have yours???????
When I had my v58 in the air it was 36 feet above the ground.
@MowerJunkie 10-4 thank you for the reply.
I have the same antenna and hope to have it setup soon. How did you go about grounding for lightning strikes?
I have a ground wire clamped to the mast, and connected to a copper ground rod.
Thanks!
what are these call numbers you givin out? is it like a unoffical call number? i know theres a few sidbander groups on facebook that issue out operator numbers,
Is that the 1200 one?
i talk to all over america hawai indonesia england germany italy scotland and many more on my australian made shockwave heavy duty 5/8 vertical antenna so i will keep an ear out for you 73s sydney 454
yup he sounds like hes from maine lol
Is this antenna better over a a99 or imax2000??
according to all the reviews I've seen, the Maco is a better antenna. Ask Me again in a month, after I've used it for a while, Then I'll let know what I think. Thanks for watching, 73's
@@MowerJunkie 151 you still liking the 58?
Do distant test in truck with wife.see how it talk local..thanks.
