This sermon has been immensely helpful to me. I’ve been a Christian since I was 5 years old, grew up in the church, but this sermon and Tim Keller’s ministry has done so much to help me really understand the GOOD NEWS rather than getting caught up in “being a good Christian”. My motivation can’t be my anxiety about outward appearance, what people will think, it has to be entirely rooted in the Gospel! Praise the Lord!

Keller makes the Gospel come to life. Teaching us it’s more than the ticket to heaven and a “good” life; it’s more than a set of doctrines. The Gospel spells freedom, true freedom bec of Jesus. I love how he translates this truth in our everyday life.

So Jesus did not say 'My burden is non-existent', but 'my burden is light'. Also, law and good works are not the same concepts in the NT. This is important for salvation.
The story at about 13:00 is awesome. Part of the problem is a certain false dichotomy many theologians set up between law and gospel. They are not synonyms, to be sure, but according to Jesus (according to God) the three "weighty matters of the law" are "judgment, mercy, and faith (pistis)." That's Matt 23:23 I think the pitting of gospel against law is a heresy that goes back as far as the early church.
Keller quotes Andrew Delbanco, who wrote the 'Real American Dream' in 1999. If that author felt that self-fulfillment was our god 21 years ago, I wonder what he would say about our state of affairs now?
this is a wonderful message. I wonder if there is a copy of it that does not have the echo effect of hearing again what you just heard. Not really sure why anyone would intentionally do this but it can be distracting. We all should know repetition is the mother of wisdom a saying often heard in Greek class but this seemed a bit much.
Tim Keller sermon- fast forward to 34:02 Starts to talk about where depression comes from: Moralist- doing something wrong, repent Relativist- you don’t like yourself, you need to find ppl that will build you up, be good to yourself, do things that make you happy. Gospel- something in your life has become more important than God. My thoughts: 1. Making something else the center of your life and more important would be essentially having an idol…which is sin, that would need to be repented of…this what is the difference between the moralist and gospel centered life in his argument. 2. Depression, anxiety, other mental health conditions are not just conditions of the heart, but in many cases diagnosable disorders that can be seen in your biological and neurological make up. It is SO shame/guilt inducing to suggest that it is because of some moral or “gospel driven” reason. Nope. Nope. nope.
To be fair, he did say “assume it’s not physiologically-based.” Maybe he should have chosen a different word than depression, as most now associate that word with the physiological, diagnosable medical condition.
1 Corinthians 6:19 - 20 19. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20. For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
He says all burdens come off. Not quite right. We are called to take up our cross and follow Jesus. We are not saved by bearing the cross, but it is part of the Cristian life.
The Jesus I know from scripture does say his burden is light, but he doesn’t say there is no burden at all. He also says to take his yoke on you and be his disciple (Matt. 11:29-30). Jesus also says no one who doesn’t take up his own cross daily in following Him isn’t worthy of being His disciple. So, exactly how do you think the burden of denying oneself for the sake of the gospel and of others is not a burden? This over-refined and hybridized gospel Keller is preaching obviously has had many well known purveyors since Luther and Calvin (who themselves put grievous burdens on Christian minorities in their communities!!). Can one just say the gospel takes burdens away without taking away the demanding burdens of obedience? Can one ignore Jesus saying that our righteousness (our actions!) must be greater than that of the Pharisees and just say “believe without burden”? Sure, one can sidle into some conception of sanctification as a second order and joyous response to the grace of God, but making it a second order aspect of the gospel is not the gospel preached by Jesus. If the spearhead of the gospel, as Keller says, is “I don’t have to do anything,” it is not a spear being wielded by a close follower of Jesus. Follow the teaching of Jesus, not that of men; cling to your tradition and it will become a shroud of shame for you.
Richard Worden Wilson I think you are missing the point a little bit. The gospel frees you because you are no longer a servant of religion. You are no longer a servant of whatever God you are serving, be it social standing, money, fame, power, independence, whatever. If you serve others out of a sense of duty and obligation, you do not really love them, but are using them as a means to gain "points" with God. That motivation is selfish. This is what the Pharisees of Jesus' day were doing, except for a few exceptions. This is what the elder brother was doing in the story of the prodigal. (Read or listen to his book called "The Prodigal God") To answer your point about righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees, a true follower of the Gospel does have such a righteousness. The Pharisees practiced their religion to impress people and to hopefully gain points with God. They did not truly love people. They were using them. When you are saved by the gospel of Christ you are free to love people as they are, but without religious self-righteousness, hypocrisy. And this love is NOT A BURDEN anymore. You don't serve people out of a sense of duty or obligation but out of love. You know that what you received was free from God and you want to give it to others too. This is what Jesus means by our righteousness exceeding that of Pharisees. When we do acts of righteousness they should be out of a heart of agape love, not duty and obligation, or to be seen by others. This is what Keller is talking about. When he's referring to Luther's quote about not having to do anything, he's referring to the fact that we don't contribute anything to salvation. That is actually true. Doing the works of the law doesn't save us, as Paul points out in many places, otherwise Christ did not need to die.

His topi's keeps Changimg and focuses so much on culture. Culture isn't the church. And church isn't the culture. Example 33:14 Smart people know the issue. He's not talking to Christians I guess.

Old Testament was written by delusional prophets and the New Testament by 12 anonymous apostles who wrote the gospels according to someone else.
