For AnimeNYC I would also say that I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for another show to add to your routine. We did rather well in the exhibitor hall but the booth cost is also over 2K. So I would only recommend if you can budget for almost 4K worth of expenses with the hotel, booth, flights, etc. and still make more than double that at least for it to be worth your while. Also note, they're making next year a 4 day show instead of 3 with a "Thursday night preview" that you are required to attend.
@@Kikopaints_ Yes, exactly that. Curious to see how it plays out next year since we already bought our booth for 2025! It's a very fun show but I agree with Dustin that it's not one that I would recommend showing at.
One of my favorite things about art events is stopping by my favorite artists booths and giving them little sticker+snack gifts, it brings smiles all around~ 😊
Currently working a non-art related job that has flexible hours. Really wanting to do my first show but gotta get material together... your content is always super inspiring! I really appreciate the transparency in it. Makes it seem more possible to a newbie like me.
I just started doing cons and festivals last year, and boy has the learning curve been steep. The most I’ve made at an event so far was $700 in a day, and the lowest was $65 for a whole weekend. Most of the shows I’ve done have been on the smaller scale since I’m just starting out, but I’m interested in upping my game for some bigger shows next year. Really appreciate your insights here! (Also, hi from CCAD!)
It took me a long time to brake 1k at a show so looks like you already doing better then my year one. often times it’s just making sure you avoid those $65 shows, poorly run events can really warp your view on how well your work performs in front of a crowd
Always good to see a video from you! Having a packing schedule sounds tough but can happen due to the chaotic nature of conventions. I hope the rest of the events will go smoothly for you and not have any more 'unexpected' events unfold. Best of luck man!
As I am also prepping for multiple shows back to back I needed this video right now. Good luck with the rest of this crazy tour! I'll get to see you at Abend before I head out of the country again which will be fun!
I just came across your video just now. I didn’t even go to the America’s mart this year but you gave me something to think about if/when I go next year. In reference to how people are set up. Ok lemme finish the rest of the video.
I live in Atlanta and didn't go to DragonCon this year because the tickets are crazy expensive and the con is ridiculously crowded. A lot of my friends ended up catching con crud afterwards. I was really happy to see you're coming back for DreamHack though, and you tabling there compelled me to purchase tickets for it even though I've never been!
I've followed your art for a long time, finally got one of the fish bags! I know this channel isn't exactly about your art process, but I've been trying to learn this whole 3D to 2D rendering pipeline for a long time and I don't think I've ever seen someone put so much texture in the 3d model BEFORE finishing off with the 2D rendering and touches, in what you showed at the beginning? Maybe I've just been looking in all the wrong places but I'd really love to see more behind the scenes of how you work, it's genuinely really awesome! Thank you for all the insightful and helpful content you always put out, and I love seeing how you add new editing styles as time has gone on!
So I am not a 3D artist at all, the 3d work at the beginning of this video was made by Mari Kirakosyan based off of one of my 2D illustrations. I am just a big fan of 3d work so I love sharing them any time people use my work as inspiration for their 3D creations.
Love this insight. I feel Like my art is more suited for something like complexcon or local art book fairs. Very indie stuff not typical nerd culture but "nerd-adjacent". I'm planning to do a few cons next year so this information helps a lot!
Just a thought on the Shadow Realm you labeled on the DC map…I’m in that area every year and had record breaking sales there this year. I wonder if some of the low traffic you saw was that there aren’t a lot of staple artists in the front corner (artists who are in their same location every year, who people make a note to visit). I can think of a couple on the left wall, but even for me my preferred route there was to cut past Aedan and Erika’s booth. It’s weird they moved you from your normal spot, I wonder if they’re hoping you’ll become that staple for the front corner?
Hmmm that is interesting, i never would of thought of it that way, I don’t mind not having a “normal spot” but i want away from this pole, so i hope I’m not locked in to that spot 😅, congrats on the new record!
First dragon con this year. I had no idea the artist alley and the hyatt grand hall where blocks and sky bridges away. Either way it was not easy finding your table. 😅
I'll be vending at my first ever con at DreamHack, so I've appreciated your videos on different alleys and info on things to consider. Best of luck to you!
@@Inkwell I did wonder how much time you have as a vendor to walk around and check things out. I guess that's what the booth assistant is for, lol. Thank you!
@@ljmartist Yeah you get trapped behind the booth without an assistant, I do have a be right back sign if I'm alone and need to grab food or use the bathroom but it's not ideal. I'll also come early to walk around before the show floor opens if I want to check out the other vendors
Praying that someday I will be able to reach your numbers in artist alley so I too can spend my days drawing my pretty little pictures and avoiding a real job 🙏
I am going to a comic con this weekend, I will keep these tips in mind to search for the needle before buying the first thing of everything I see... HAHA

Like a guide on tips for banners, color coordination, do you need to buy certain tables, good ways to show smaller vs large items, etc. EDIT: oh I suppose that would be your Artist Alley Checklist video!

@@mast3rbangHi! I don’t know if you saw, but I put an edit on my comment where I did find a video similar to what I was suggesting. Still think a deep dive for art displays could be fun. Have a great day.
@@Brittanysplittany that is a question on what kind of art you usually do. It depends on what your artstyle is. Which is why you design your booth layout yourself. Nothing matches your art than your own aesthetic sense.
I will ASK again. In an economy that is not doing so well especially when the cost of living is so high. How are you getting people to buy your work when even they are struggling for rent? How?
@@Hoi-art it really depends on your work, making work that resinates in someway, and finding a way to get your work in front of the people it resinates with. People who are struggling for rent probably are not the ones buying my work but that doesn’t mean just because some one isn’t buying something that they are not consuming your work in other ways, art is always going to be a luxury product. That being said you don’t need to be rich to buy something from me, I sell things at all different price points in the hopes that iit is accessible by most. Depending on what you want to make I would suggest tailoring the types of things you sell to different price points/ economic groups. Understanding the audience your work is for will go a long way.
@@Inkwell Right, but if you're suggesting tailoring your work to appeal to "economic groups" or cheaper buyers, it ends up cheapening the brand. No artist wants to be known as the "dollar store" version of their craft. Plus, the cost of raw materials is constantly rising. When you keep mentioning, "I made 18k at X show," it comes across as more for clout, especially considering the current state of the economy in the U.S., which isn’t doing too well. In reality, most of the profits often go straight back into food, travel, rent, bills, and restocking merchandise. I can guarantee that most artists don't have the funds to produce enough merchandise to lower the cost of goods-they can only afford the bare minimum.
@@Hoi-art keeping things accessible to people who can't drop a lot of money I don't think cheapens the brand at all. You certainly can also go a higher-end route, quite common in the fine art world. appealing to more of a collectors market, but as a digital artist, I don't have one-off paintings to sell so that is simply not part of my business strategy. I'm not saying lower your prices, I'm saying offer products that are naturally at a lower price point, 18x24 print vs 5x7 print is simply cheaper to make and thus can be priced better. You can also offer both this opens up who can buy from you. I would always suggest sticking with average market rates. Undercutting other artists prices is just a race to the bottom in my experience. I also don't share my numbers for fun, I think I've been pretty open about my wins and losses on this channel, it would be hard to talk about the business side of these things without being transparent with the numbers. When I started out 100% of the money I made went back into the business, I think that's to be expected. Marketing your work like anything else is a skill, that takes time to refine.
