The Wii U is still my favourite console. I loved the game library and the aesthetic of the OS and menus. It's very nostalgic and still very fun.
It's one of my favorites too! The OS and menus are amazing. It's too bad Nintendo moved away from that with the Switch

The Wii U may be remembered by some as a failure that even Nintendo wants to forget about, but to me it will always be remembered as something more.
There may be some bad things about it, but the good things that it does overshadows the bad in my opinion. I always said that it's my all-time favorite Nintendo console, but it still is to this day and for many good reasons.
I agree with you that the Wii U's down sides are overshadowed by all the good things it does. I'll keep playing it after the eShop closes.

The Wii U will always be my favorite console and if I had to chose between the switch or Wii U, It’s definitely the Wii U with its great virtual console without having to pay a fee and a great selection of first party games

I was there day 1 for the WiiU and LOVED each and every minute of it.
I got the wii u 2 years later after its launch since I was a kid and I lived in Sweden so there weren't much people talking about it until I heard about it, gotta be honest the wii u is soo nostalgic to me, I had so much memories with it
I sadly didn't get mine on launch day, but I did get it a few months after. I also loved every minute of it!
It so good to see that other people like the Wii U. All I've heard for years is how I should leave it in the past and move on. It's such a great console!
I really wish the Virtual Console was still around. NSO just isn't really it for me. I go through periods that I don't play games as much, which isn't ideal with a subscription like that. I also just don't find all games in their catalogues as interesting. I prefer to just buy single games for a one-time price. It's also a little unfortunate that I miss out on online play with Mario Kart 8 DX and 3D World, as that's restricted to NSO as well.
I'm with you! I prefer paying for the games I want one time and having them forever. This subscription model for everything is really getting old.
I have all consoles after 2000, even portables, but my Wii U is my favorite. Was playing it just now and love the people still supporting it. Splatoon, Mario Kart and Black Ops still going strong in multiplayer as well.

Great video, as always! I really appreciate the points you made about digital distribution. While I always will prefer physical over digital, digital does serve its purposes like offering older games that are out of print. If only the Switch also had the virtual console instead of the inferior NSO, it would be so much better than it already is.
Agreed! The Virtual Console is superior to NSO. Hopefully they bring it back for their next console.

The Wii U deserved so much more love, it had an amazing store and interface. Also the gamepad is so comfortable in the hand!
I don't think the gamepad gets the credit it deserves. It is so comfortable!
I have a Wii U soft modded and got a bunch of games off a Wii U usb helper, gonna eventually get its own HDD so I can enjoy most of its games.

That’s awesome! I don’t know why people did like the Wii U. I doubt a good amount of people who don’t like it have never actually played one.
People didn't like it mostly due to lack of games (especially third-party games) to go with the Wii U which is understandable. Many overlooked the eShop and I think it's because it wasn't advertised much. Even I didn't know what the eShop offered until a lot of people started making these videos since nintendo announced the eshop's closure.
9:00 That is true. The Wii U was one of the best consoles of all time. Nobody has ever talked about it ever since it failed. I no longer use but the 3DS has kept me occupied and helps me miss the Wii U less because like the 3ds, it has some sort of magic that I know.
It really is a great console! I never understood why it was hates so badly.
@@NeanderMeander Me neither man, I still remember playing Wii games such as super Mario galaxy 2, the legend of Zelda,twilight princess and the wind wakes, Mario kart 8, Mario party 8, and punch out. The most important reason why I really love the Wii U was it’s backwards compatible and Poor Nintendo still failed to impress everyone, I mean I still love the Wii U as a home console and the 3DS as a handheld to take on the go and people still preferred to play on the go with the 3DS. My dad even gave it a chance and we loved it.
Great stuff as always! The eshop closing is such a bummer. So many wonderful games will be lost. I've scooped up a few games recently that I want to preserve on my Wii U.

Damn, you're convincing me to rebuy a Wii U while I can still access the eShop. I sold mine in 2014 to buy an Xbox One. I really shouldn't spend the money BUT I did just get a $800 tax refund haha.

Depends on how badly you’ll regret it when you can no longer access most of the digital stuff. I’d say go for it, as anything WiiU- related is sure to skyrocket in value over the next few years.
The Wii U should be given credit for being Nintendo's first HD console. It could actually output full 1080p to the TV, and 1080p is a big step-up from 480p on the original Wii
I agree with you. HD was a huge step up for Nintendo. I'm still not exactly sure why people hated on the Wii U. I don't think many of them even played one.
I just bought a Japanese Wii U for US$30, and I am so excited to relive this era in Nintendo. So so so many great games.

I had no idea they updated Duck Hunt for the WiiU so it's playable again that is crazy awesome. If I could ever find a complete WiiU that isn't in terrible condition I'd love to pick on up. Thank you! I think it's great you bought a Wii U. I always thought Nintendo would put those Zelda games on the Switch, but Nintendo usually does the opposite of what I think they should.
I wasn't able to play the Wii U that much but realizing how big the eShop library is makes me feel really sad for missing out.
There's still time. I'm still recommending the Wii U to everybody.
I picked up a Wii U in February because of my interest in Wii U softmodding and homebrewing... and also because of my intrigue in the console.
No regrets whatsoever.

I love the Wii U. One thing no one ever mentions is the Turbografx games on the Eshop. The fact I could play something like Lords Of Thunder on the Gamepad curled up in bed is my all time favorite way to play that game.
Also there's a game buried deep in there called Arcade Pinball that has like 50 Arcade Pinball Machines lovingly recreated from Gottlieb's The Black Hole to Williams The Addams Family and many more. The physics are fantastic and feels like you're really playing a game of Pinball. Previous versions appeared on the Gamecube and Wii and I believe PS2 but using the Wii U R2 and L2 buttons is hands down the best way to play. It just feels right.
I thought about adding a Turbografix section to the video, but I just don't have enough experience with those games to knowledgeably talk about them. I don't think I would have sold how great they most likely are. Though I plan on playing them.
Thanks for mentioning the Arcade Pinball game! I love pinball games! And the R2 and L2 buttons on the gamepad are amazing! I can imagine how they feel playing pinball with them!
Yeah, I have no idea what they were thinking with the Mario GBA remakes' names when in Japan they were just called "Super Mario Advance 1, 2, 3, and 4". They could've just simply called them "Super Mario Bros. 2. Deluxe", "Super Mario World Deluxe", "Yoshi Island Deluxe", and "Super Mario Bros. 3 Deluxe" over here, similar to how Wario Land 4, and Mario Kart: Super Circuit were originally just "Wario Land Advance", and "Mario Kart Advance" in Japan.
I just got a wii u a couple months ago, it is honestly such a charming UI and the eshop is so good!!!! The switch and it's games feel just like the UI, sterile. Especially 2020 and on after games like BOTW, smash bros, and Astral chain came out. I just wish nintnedo kept part of that UI, honestly they could have done a Mashup of the 3ds and wii u menu and it would have looked great! The theme opportunity would have been sick and the loss of the Virtual Console makes me sad :(
i agree completely! The Switch is so bland in comparison. I love the Switch, but it's lacking severely in charm.

Wii U is the missing link between the Wii's success and Nintendo's rebranding after the Iwata era.
The Iwata era was so amazing, imo after he passed away and Reggie retiring everything went downhill.

It does feel like Nintendo has wavered from where they were. Though he was working on the Switch when he passed. You can still see a little of that era in it.

Finally got the Wii U just weeks before the news, thinking at that time the the eShop would still be around the year 2025.

I have a Wii U sitting in my closet that I recently purchased from a game store, I've already put Tiramisu on it but haven't touched it since, once I get the proper storage drives to host it's games I'll set it up

I don't. I keep a close eye on local classifieds. I've been able to get way better deals on them than other more known sites like eBay and Mercari.
Castlevania Dracula x is on the psp/vita store with the game Castlevania x chronicles as an unlockable been on the store way before the wiiu and is still on the store

I still have my Black Wii U since it launched. As eshop closes, softmodding Wii U gives it alot more things to do with it.
I love that there are more people looking to mod their consoles to keep them alive. I'll most likely be doing the same.

If it was released in holiday 2009 would have been a better success. Having Super Mario Galaxy 2 HD in 2010. I think the Wii popularity stated to decline in 2009 with PS3 price drop and slim model. Also having a Wii U with a standard controller and Wii remote and delay the game pad at least until 2011.
I think you are right on all these points. It was a learning experience for Nintendo.

How was the Wii U's competition revolutionary? Wii U wasn't as successful and it was a mistake to over-focus on its new controller but the Wii U was worth it for the GamePad. It's still my favorite controller and I hope Nintendo brings back dual-screen game design.
I hope they do too! The Gamepad was seen as a joke, but it is amazing. Not only does it give the player a second screen, it's also extremely comfortable to use.

Soon to be forgotten? Right now the Wii U is on the exact opposite path of that, it’s becoming a cult classic and within the next 5 years people will be as nostalgic for it as the Wii and GameCube are now.

C'mon you know the modding is where it's at. You can emulate games that aren't on eshop and you can play gamecube games NATIVELY
I'm sure were all thinking this same thing. I'll be modding one soon enough. I personally like to support things when they are still alive. But once that support is gone, it's fair game in my opinion. If the company making doesn't care enough to keep it going, the community will.
@@NeanderMeander You can mod the system without pirating games. Just for the convenience of having games downloaded on an external storage, changing the ui theme, gamecube games. And most old games aren't sold anymore

Unfourtanetly with all the issues with the eshop closing and sony's problems with their online store on PS3 and PSP I'm going to be focusing on physical again.

Yeah this is why I don't really buy digital games, as the games you buy digitally aren't really yours, you just have a license to play it, so I'm a big proponent of game preservation, as even though old man Marcus has his physical copies, I feel the disposable nature of modern gaming that is digital distribution, concerns me. It concerns me too! You're right, it does feel disposable. I remember cherishing every game I owned because I didn't have very many games. It's too bad that games aren't seen as treasures anymore. I hope you're doing well.

I've been able to do 4K streams which have been as always, neat to pull off, and I myself am deciding what Episode 151 of Power Up! will be, I would like to do more cinematic affairs, as people(mainly irl family and friends)loved my S13 opener, calling it one of my best works yet. And I love your use of B-roll and transitions. It just flows so well! It's just so aesthetically pleasing! I feel like buying one just to play duck hunt! A serious consideration! SMH.
No joke, that game is extremely fun and addicting. I sat down to get footage and had a hard time not playing on. It's those simple games that really pull you in.
I always feel like Nintendo is at its peak when they are the underdog, when things aren't going well. I love the idea behind the Switch hardware, but it really lacks the creativity and personality of the WiiU and 3DS era. The Mii's, Miiverse, menu music, eShop mini game, Street Pass. Not to mention all the new games that were created on the WiiU. Mario Maker, Splatoon, Mario 3D World/Land, Captain Toad, NES Remix, Nintendo Land, Xenoblade Chronicles X & Breath of the Wild (which were massive departures from the previous games in the series). On Switch, we I feel like we get sequals, ports or just half-games (Like Bowser's Fury, and even Mario Odyssey... I can make a whole video on the last one). Where has the innovation gone? Nintendo themselves aren't pumping out games, and indies are currently carrying the heavy burden of fun concepts and innovation. I feel like much of the Nintendo magic died with the WiiU.
The Switch really doesn't have the charm the Wii U or 3DS have. It feels like Nintendo put so much more effort into them.

I really liked my WiiU. Although, in hindsight, the number of games that we’re truly losing forever is fairly low. The 3DS is the real victim to me.
