    Macharius is such an underrated hero. The guy went a lifetime in the imperium having only lost 1 battle. His leadership conquered 1000 worlds. His downfall was the broken pride of the high lords who refused to see his loyalty for the possibility of them loosing power, when in reality his only concern in life was spreading the emperors domain.
    If you haven’t read his books, I can’t recommend them enough. They are amazingly written and you follow his bodyguards who are frankly so well written you wish they were real people. And the memes in that book would be legendary if more knew about them.

Not because he wouldn't be aware it's technically true, but because he would quickly recognize the human supremacism laced into the Empire's culture and exploit it to cause Thrawn internal problems by mounting a propaganda campaign to spread the Imperial Creed in his ranks and stoke internal racial strife in a human-dominated military under an alien commander. He could cause havoc in Thrawn's ranks leaving him constantly dealing with betrayals and defections, and Thrawn would have little answer to it, religious fervor, commissars, and the inquisition make Imperium forces more resistant to the same tactic.

    It's a close match, assuming they have equal "points" worth of forces, but I believe Macharius would win in the end. Thrawn would likely recognize him immediately as a megalomaniac (he's wearing gold armor covered in laurels, it's not hard to deduce) and simply give ground until Macharius overextends, then close the vice on him. And that SHOULD work...in a sane universe. But Macharius isn't from a sane universe, and Thrawn's logical mind will make it difficult for him to adapt to the random nonsense the Imperium can pull out of its rear when they're in a bind. Sororitas will perform miracles, flaming ghost marines will suddenly take the field out of nowhere, dead enemies will come back to life as saints, etc etc. Thrawn is likely to believe that Macharius has stretched himself too thin before it's actually happened, and spring his traps prematurely, not expecting the Imperium's religion to be tangibly real. Then Thrawn will be on his back foot while the Imperium rallies and pressures him, and there's a good chance the war machine of the guard will grind him down faster than he can adapt and turn it around.

    • @Aurondarklord
      @Aurondarklord 2 месяца назад +20

      @@essexclass8168 At first, yes, but ultimately I think logistics would favor Thrawn for one reason: HYPERDRIVE. Thrawn never has to worry about his supplies and reinforcements getting lost in a warp storm, showing up a century late, or coming out of FTL completely insane or being chased by daemons. While both methods have their limitations (hyperlanes/astronomicon), hyperdrive is generally faster and you show up when and where you expected to. Of course, there's risk of the tech being salvaged and reverse engineered by the Imperium, which would require Thrawn to adopt something like the Cole Protocol, but the Mechanicus is superstitious and resistant to new ideas, which would slow that down a lot.

    • @essexclass8168
      @essexclass8168 2 месяца назад +5

      @@Aurondarklord I actually doubt this as Warp travel would be better in the SW Galaxy without all the bad thoughts warping the Immaterium in the SW Galaxy, whereas Hyperdrive lanes would be non-existent in the Milky Way making every jump dangerous.

    • @Aurondarklord
      @Aurondarklord 2 месяца назад +7

      @@essexclass8168 For the sake of fair comparison I'm assuming neither of them has a "home field advantage" and they would be fighting on neutral ground where all of their usual technology and abilities work the way they normally do, the standard format for crossover vs battles. So Thrawn has charted hyperlanes, Macharius has the light of the astronomicon, daemons remain a concern for psykers but won't suddenly become a problem for Force sensitives. Etc.

    • @essexclass8168
      @essexclass8168 2 месяца назад +4

      @@Aurondarklord Hyperdrives straight up wouldn't have hyperlanes while Warp Travel wouldn't have a galactic murder orgy to encumber it in a neutral setting.
      That's the thing the Imperium's FTL doesn't work the way it normally should the way it normally does in 40k. The Astronomicon is only needed by the Imperium because the Milky Way's sea of souls is so turbulent, Warp Drives have been used for at least 10000 years without the need of the Astronomicon prior to the Age of Strife and fall of the Eldar because the warp wasnt as treacherous at the time. Unless similar, if not the same events have occured in the neutral setting why would the warp's terrain be the same as in 40k's home galaxy?
      On the other hand, hyperspace lanes are explicitly a homefield advantage, they only exist because they have been built by species native to the SW Galaxy for millennia before anyone else, including the builders, took to the stars.
      What you're speaking of isn't neutral ground, it's weighted ground in the Imperium's disadvantage and the Empire's advantage.

    Macharius:
    Assets:
    Master of direct warfare. Bold, charismatic, men will follow him into Hell.
    Imperium is better at combined arms warfare and close combat.
    Better variety of "surprise" units, psykers, supersoldiers, freaky ancient tech.
    Imperial religion is both a propaganda and anti-propaganda tool.
    God is literally on his side, allowing miracles and outside context problems.

    Can get his hands tied by the Imperium's labyrinthine bureaucracy.
    Won't do anything that's against his religion.
    Prone to pushing his men so hard morale and discipline break down.

    Better logistics and supply lines due to far faster and more reliable FTL tech.

      What this means in my opinion is that Macharius would win if we’re viewing this as a single large-scale battle, but Thrawn probably has the advantage if we’re treating this as an actual war stretched out over dozens or hundreds of battles. If Thrawn has time to study imperium tactics, art, and religion, then that combined with his “mastery of indirect warfare” as you put it as well has his superior FTL and logistical capacity could gain the upper hand over time.

  • @CorneliusChimp-hm2vo
    @CorneliusChimp-hm2vo 2 месяца назад +124

    Thrawn would punch way above his weight class and give the imperium and even Macharius a challenge. But the real defining factor of the conflict would be that macharius in general just has better "stuff"
    Soldier vs Soldier, a Stormtrooper is basically a PDF soldier below a guardsmen. A blaster should be somewhere between a autogun and a lazgun in terms of damage, so they wouldn't be helpless, but canon stormtroopers are less well trained and have weaker morale.
    Ship vs. ship, a canon ISD is basically just an escort vessal in 40k. They could hold their own in numbers, and between thrawns tactics and the logistical advantage of hyperspace he will definitely make the most of them, but macharius has the best of the imperiums ships, which likely includes some DAOT ships
    Also just tactically, Macharius has way more cards up his sleeve. Thrawns biggest weakness was that he couldn't account for the force, or space magic in general since it wasn't something he could predict. How could he account for something like living saints, psykers, imperial assassins, all of whom would be in the hands of a tactical genius like Macharion.
    Yeah thrawn is that guy, but the best commanders of 40k are cut from that same cloth and have the absurd arsenal of 40k along with it

      Thrawns stormtroopers are on par with the Tempestus Scions not PDF, they are the special forces trained and educated in a system very similar to the Schola Progenium. The regular Imperial Army, depending on where they are raised would be either IG or PDF quality. There is nothing (outside of certain Jedi or Sith) that could hit on par with Space Marines in the Star Wars universe. Also I do not know of any escort vessel in 40k that can undertake an Exterminatus on a planet, each Star Destroyer (both Imperial I and II) can and will do so when called upon so that would even up the firepower requirements even if the size of the ships cannot be disputed. I do believe that you are correct in some parts but your breakdown does not do justice to Star Wars. Also if we take into account Jedi Master Joruus C'boath then Thrawn does have access to the Force though in a relatively uncontrolled state and would be able to rely on Battle Meditation which would decoordinate the Imperiums Forces and make Thrawns forces far more in sync with each other. It probably wouldn't work nearly as well against the Space Marines and Sisters of Battle but they would be in the minority compared to the mass forces of the Guard.
      (It would be probably tip the balance even more in Thrawns favor if we gave him access to some of the ships in Star Wars that he would not during the course of his life such as the Executor and Eclipse class Star Dreadnaught and the Nebula class Star Destroyer, which is arguably the best Star Destroyer ever created and could hit far beyond its own weight class, and if Thrawn was in command of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, which included: Lukes New Jedi Order, the New Republic, Hapes Consortium and Imperial Remnant, then Thrawn could probably draw even at least if not surpass even Macharius' crusade)

      I get that you are basing most of your knowledge off of cannon, but in legends he acounted for all of this. the hard countered the force better than the old sith empire did. he used Ysalamir (essentially 40k blanks) to turn all of his stormtroopers (who were elite in legends) into pseudo sisters of silence. Even if those didn't work on psychers he would adapt and start cloning blanks. Don't forget that he already has brought a galaxy spanning empire to its knees once, the only thing that stopped him being a shitty deal vader had with some allies. as for ships, yeah the imperium has an advantage but if we go from when Thrawn returns we are talking each fleet having an SSD or greater which would be on par with imperial line ships, the star destroyer is also liable ot punch above its weight class simply because of all the wasted space on imperial vessels so slightly better than most esscorts (though one hit with a lance is liable to bring down sheilds or worse lol). now for fighters that si where the Empire gets its advantage because thrawn extensively used tie defenders. in essence cannon thrawn gets powned by macharius, legends thrawn just might come on top. sorry if that was a little ranty.
      Edit: forgot to mention, blasters in the novelization of a new hope hit HARD like hollowpoint damage in an armor-piercing body. So while not quite bolters they are definitely stronger, albeit slower with a shorter range, than lasguns. in game terms, I'd put them at a strength 3.5 (Unplayable but you get the message).

      @@aesonkeel6527 the only problem is that sure a Thrawn stormtrooper is better than a guardsman, but its relative its not as good as a Scion which would be more like the clones sinde they are nigh superhuman. And stuff like Titans and Knights he cant actually deal with besides orbital bombardment, (hoping its not an Emperor class titan it could fire back and tank the shot too), for the simple fact that most of Star Wars are based of lighter vehicules and not piercing through a litteral hill worth of metal, same for the Space warfare, Thrawn is indeed the better space fighter and would outmanoeuvre his opponent all day, while basically using the webway honestly, and rendering much bigger ships worthless by striking critical components whenever a ship or small enough flotille is around.
      Problem being 40k being 40k, he IS going to be outnumbered, he is used to fighting outnumbered true, but usually its because its ennemies also has common sense and wants to protect its assets when threatened, instead of Kamikaze themselves into the nearest star destroyer.
      Honestly Thrawn cannot win with what he had in Canon.
      Now put him in controll of the Full Galatic Empire and not most of the North really after everything kinda fell apart.
      Put him in controll of the trade federation works too especially without the droid failsafe made to lose stuff, such easy to manufacture numbers would allow him to use his usual tactics and withstand the attrition, in which the Imperium always has the upper hand otherwise.
      If cant do that he needs to lead a 40k faction in order to win.

    You know... Whats to stop the Imperium from just teleporting their troops directly on to the command bridge of a star destroyer like the Chimera? [Oh wait... forgot Thrawn converted the luxury entertainment suite on the Chimaera into his private command room. But... while that keeps Thrawn safe from any teleporting boarding parties (under the assumption they dont know where the room is located at, which they probably dont since this was modified by Thrawn) the Chimaera's bridge crew likely aren't. And I don't think Thrawn can access the Chimaera's ship controls in his private command room, pretty sure he can only issue out orders to the personnel at the controls on the bridge.

      Thrawn has the issue of bad officers. The officers of the Imperium may have a lot of corruption in their command structure, but they know their loyalties and ultimately serve the emperor to their best ability in the end. Most officers in the galactic empire are only loyal to themselves.

      The nerve of the average Imperial Trooper against the Average guardsman would also play a part i suspect. the Imperial Guard might be nearly unbreakable even if they might retreat from time to time unless Thrawn has vong and force beasts around, whereas Imperial psykers, cherubs, penitent engines, fanatics such as death cult assassins and the ministorum priests, (as Macharius led a combined force and not just an IG one), and angels and daemons might be too much for anyone but Stormtroopers and above to handle.
      and if Macharius has access to the Office of the Assassins, Thrawn might meet his fate very quickly similarly to how he did in the books with a Vanus or Callidus assassin around
      It'd be like fighting the older Sith Empires.
      And then there's the Mechanicus and their Cyberwarfare and the potential advantage in Intelligence posed by Psykers in a galaxy with a collective Psyche not as schizoprenic as the warp of the Milky Way.
      Ironically the battle between these two great commanders may be decided by their troops capabilities and not their tactical and strategic genius

    Christ, both are wonderful commanders. Both are smarter than whole university campuses. Thrawn is a magnificent analyst, Macharious is a supreme commander and inspiring figure. One-on-one is to Macharious no question. Tactically, Thrawn is the better schemer. But a full-on war between them, with similar resources, is to our Lord Solar. The Imperium is a better/more powerful power down to the individual soldier. The Empire is the most powerful power in its universe because the political maneuver of Palpatine made it the ONLY power. The Imperium had to claw its way to the top in a thousand dead worlds and a hundred dead empires.
    Now, you give Thrawn and Imperium battlefleet? on void is Thrawn´s game, on ground it Macharious´s domain.
    Together?
    You better run, you heretic.

    Macharius has the advantage in troop numbers and the more powerful weaponry, but Thrawn holds the advantage of intellect and has been in a similar position before and came out on top. Honestly the ending point is how loyal their troops are to their commander, and while Macharius's forces refused to go past the light of the Astronimicon forcing him to retreat Thrawn inspires incredible loyalty in his troops to the point there was a massive effort be the Imperial Remnant undertook to get him back from another galaxy, something that was considered borderline impossible, so I think Thrawn pretty easily clears in the troop loyalty department.

      Also depending on the Thrawn we're talking about he was assassinated in the middle of the battle of Bilbringi or was comically incompetent as shown in Ahsoka, losing powerful allies and several stormtroopers because he didn't execute a Jedi he had just effectively captured or killed his enemies with a gunship he used to drop forces he wasted for no real reason.

      @ Ahhhhh well I suppose thats fair sorry if the comment came off snapping at all, it can be confusing now comparing new Disney lore to Legends.
      In Legends the New Republic did not have a hooray miracle one year after Endor final victory over the Empire, in fact a Concordance wouldn’t come till 19ABY. In between that time was near endless war between the New Republic, Imperial breakaways, Warlords, independent powers, a Reborn Palpatine (Clones+Essence Transfer=R2 ended up saving the galaxy again), and throughout it the New Republic was in a constant state of military conflict+war readiness. Thrawn’s return to the galaxy in 9ABY was more or less after the NR had appeared to solidly secure its position as galactic titan, then with solid tactics and a dozen ISD’s he brought it to its knees and was only eventually defeated by being betrayed.
      And thats a very big condensing of lore lmao

    Awesome song.
    Here's how it is In my mind. Macharius is the better fighter, stronger, longer lived therefore more experienced, and much more ruthless. He has no qualms about throwing away the lives of his men.
    Thrawn, on the other hand, is far more intelligent. He will most likely make use of his prep time to study the imperium, see its ins and outs, and come up with the correct solution to deal with it. If the imperium was to suddenly appear, Thrawn would remain calm, assess the situation and create the best solution.
    Both these men's greatest weakness would not be within them but without. Both empires are notoriously incompetent. Thrawn would be in command of glory hounds who'd disobey orders the second he turns his back, Macharius has to deal with people who have the wrath of a hippo and the brain of a toddler.
    It would ultimately end in the situation where the two admirals would be in that cat and mouse game at each other with their own ships, like in that one episode where Anakin BS'd his way past Admiral Trench.

    As a recent Warhammer 40k enjoyer and was originally a Star Wars fan seeing Thrawn would already a probably and when I got my research done on Machariucs I see why this is a huge “But” fight but if everything is on resources, Loyalty to there command, and believe, The imperium win in the believe part with no challenge the Imperium believes the have fought to keep humanity together and with that the also win the Loyalty part. Seeing him as a problem and a huge one if left unchecked like how the Tau came around the will do anything to beat down Thrawn but resources are on both side more on the Imperium side but it’s there. So with my knowledge put in well I would say the battle would last a long long time it won’t last forever and Thrawn sadly would getting beaten slowly painfully sure Thrawn can buy time he’s good at that but he can’t stop a empire 100 times the size of the Galactic empire and hell the rebels show if you use your tools right you can beat a empire but this is the Imperium and main war tactics the Imperium would win the would see Thrawn as a good foe and maybe even see him as a equal during the battle but that’s a Imperium victory

Before launching a devastating counter attack. Thrawn is used to operating with basically no ships and soldiers against much larger and more well equipped foes, while Mach is used to having a functionally unlimited amount of resources to destroy the enemy with. Thrawn will act cautiously to preserve the life of his forces until he can inflict a devastating blow, while Mach will send in waves of troops just to end the battle as quickly as possible.

      Not arguing on the first two statements about ground units at all, they’re totally correct. But, the Death Star could absolutely survive a cyclonic torpedo strike. Most people really don’t understand how completely absurd the Death Star actually is.
      The key to this is that the Death Star is designed to be able to destroy planets of almost any size, up to and including gas giants, and including planets with planetary shields. This makes its beam way overkill for an earth-sized planet. To confirm this, one only need look at the size of the resulting explosion when the Death Star destroys Alderaan - the explosion is fucking huge, with the debris cloud expanding to many times the radius of the planet in mere seconds.
      From this, there are two relevant facts. First, the Death Star stays in orbit after destroying planets, which means that it must be designed to survive chunks of said planets hurling into it at of thousands of kilometers per second. Second, even a tiny amount of inefficiency in a reactor that generates that much power would create an absurd amount of waste heat, meaning that the Death Star must dissipate heat in the at least the zettawatt range, but likely far higher.
      I can do the math on both of these if you want, but suffice it to say that a cyclonic torpedo isn’t even denting the Death Star. Of course, it might be a different story with a 2-stage cyclonic torpedo, but even then I’m not sure it’s so cut and dry.

    Everyone says, "Thrawn is a Navy officer, not an Army officer, so Macharius has the advantage," but this is untrue. Some may think that Thrawn would have a harder time commanding troops in a land battle but that would not be the case, he is not only proficient in naval warfare. Thrawn had to climb the ranks, which means he has experience commanding different levels of military. In the new Thrawn trilogy of books that is canon, Thrawn demonstrates remarkable intelligence, problem-solving, and deduction skills. Thrawn would most certainly be able to survive and thrive in a military general setting. Thrawn deserves more credit than people are giving him. If anything, it would be Macharius who would be at a disadvantage. Macharius relies on having a fundamentally better army and uses sheer force to power his way through. Tactics like this can become a crutch because one does not practice high creative thinking often. Thrawn would probably find a way to use this against Macharius and formulate a plan to separate Macharius from the mightiest parts of his army thus pulling the rug from beneath Macharius's feet and putting him on the ropes. Also, the way Macharius fights is predictable which is dangerous when facing someone like Thrawn who is already good at predicting an opponent's moves. When facing new opponents, Thrawn is better at using methods to gain information about said opponent. Mecharius may be a genius and have a stronger army but Thrawn wins. Thrawn Is better at thinking on the fly and adapting. Macharius may have the stronger army but Thrawn has all the information. Thrawn knows how to recover, salvage, and use any situation to his benefit and because of all of this, Thrawn wins.

    It comes down to the forces they command.
    The Empire lost to a few space wizards and the rebels, for the average guardsmen regiment its Tuesday.
    The Empire might have better training but the Imperium forces don't mind dying and they fought stronger and way more advanced threats and won.
    The Deathcore of Krieg would probably try to beat Vader to death with shovels.
    The Imperium would be at severe disadvantage in space tho thanks to the advanced FTL travel of the Empire navy.

    As Expected the Song is Great.
    In my opinion Thrawn, would win this matchup; Macharius was a skilled strategist. Some times he is a little to rigged in his mindset, relying on mass unit tactics and trench warfare. Thrawn however, was able to seamlessly integrate Insurgent tactics together with standard Imperial shock and awe tactics. But ultimately it would come down to the troops under their command; in that case the Astra Militarum would have a major disadvantage; average Imperial Guardsman; Gets around 4 months training, standard Carapace Flack Armor; which gives good protection against projectiles, but virtually no defense against directed energy weapons, over normal cloth combat uniform. And are equipped with a standard "Triplex" Pattern Lasgun; A good sturdy weapon that fires a beem of Light, intense enouph to melt bone. Meanwhile your average Imperial Army Trooper; receives between 3 to 4 years of training. Army Troops are equipped with standard Plastoid Armor; each plate is designed to dissipate heat and physical impact across the hole of the armor, over a standard Thermocloth uniform, making them almost invulnerable to standard hand held laser weapons, unless you shoot them in the face. The standard weapon for your average Imperial Army Trooper is the E11 Blaster Rifle Carbine; which fires a bolt of superheated plasma, not unlike a Tau Pulls Rifle; which have bean described as able to punch through Power Armor. only more compact and advanced, with to ability to firing fully auto at 300 shots a minute.
    Also Astra Militarum regiments are single unite regiments, Infantry, Cavalry, Tanks, vs Imperial Army Regiments are always combined arms regiments. so in order to counter 1 Army regiment, 2 or even 3 Guard regiments would be needed. in closing with out Space Marine or Titan support the Guard would be fighting an enemy that outmatched them in 19 out of 20 battles. and even with Space Marine or Titans I think the empire could counter them rather easily. people forget after first contact with Titans the Tau created effective tactics to counter them. And as said before the empire is more technologically and Logistically developed then the Tau.
    Sorry had to get this out of my Head!

      @@caderiddle5996 yes sorry, 300 shots a Minute is well within the E11's ability. However Imperial Troopers are trained to prioritize accuracy not fire down range. pulse "mag dumping" can cause the E11 to overheat, which causes it to become less accurate.

    I see a lot of people have forgotten that Trawn is a Grand Admiral, his strategy would definitely lie in keeping space clear to drop a MASSIVE number of tactical strikes from orbit and with TIE. and let's not forget that while both need reinforcement, for trawn there is no need to go through hell to get it. that being said on the ground it will be much more complex cat soyont honette in terms of armored cavalry and in terms of infantry, the astra millitarum crushes the empire. note that being said that I see a lot of people who don't seem to know the power of Star Wars blaster weapons... well, do your research because some blasters are much more powerful than the average lasgun (and for the nerd deep down I said average so calm down your answer regarding the hellgun)
