  • In this video I will show you how I usually pick the pumpkins from the garden, I will also talk about when I pick the pumpkins and what you should look for before you remove it from the plant.
The pumpkin shown in the video I believe is a hybrid between Jap/Kent Pumpkin and butternut, personally I prefer this pumpkin roasted and occasionally I use it to make delicious soups.

Hello, I like your channel. I also have a question. Do you have vine borers in your area, and if so how do you control them? Thanks

Hello, I am glad you enjoy it :) thanks for your nice comment.
I have been growing pumpkins for only a year, I haven't experienced this type of diseases, I also think they are not a problem here in Australia.
I found an article on the internet that seems to have lots of information about it: www.almanac.com/pest/squash-vine-borer
I would try to prevent and get rid of them in a more organic way, I would try some natural organic pesticides first, I watch this channel a lot, have a look, he got some nice approaches on how to deal with pests

I would also try a mix of crushed garlic, chilli and black pepper diluted with water maybe 1:20 ratio and just spray it where the plant is most likely to be attacked, I am not completely sure about this one but I would recommend you to apply it in a small part of your plant to see how it reacts to this mix and let me know how you go.

How many times should I fertilize, I fertilize at the time of planting, and once after with grandula fertilizer ,now I have some grapefruit size pumpkin, I was wondering if I should give them more

      Hi Vera,
I will tell you my personal experience.
I added around two hand fulls of blood and bone fertiliser each month for a period of around 4 months for four pumpkin plants, it may depends on the fertility of your soil as well, you may have to look at the plant and check it's health appearance.
After doing some research I found an article that tells me a more specific approach to fertilising this pumpkin plants, this is what they say:
Pumpkins are heavy feeders and will eat up whatever you give them. Different nutrients promote different kinds of growth, however, so when fertilizing pumpkins, it’s important to pay attention to what stage of growth your pumpkin is in and feed it accordingly. Commercial fertilizers come with three numbers on their packaging. These numbers represent nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, always in that order. When feeding pumpkin plants, apply three successive fertilizers, each heavy in one of those numbers, in that same order. Nitrogen promotes green growth, making for plenty of vines and leaves. Apply a weekly nitrogen-heavy fertilizer early in the growing season to produce a healthy plant. Once the flowers start to form, switch to a phosphorus-heavy fertilizer for plentiful blossoms. When the actual pumpkins appear, use a potassium-rich fertilizer for healthy fruit.
This is the article if you would like to read more:

Remember that when the female pumpkin flower start to open up you may need to pollinate them by hand if there is not insects doing it for you, when I first started, my baby pumpkins were dying and I thought it may be the snails or slugs eating it but after doing some research I realised that they must get pollinated in order to grow, otherwise they will eventually die
I explain here how I pollinated mine: ruclips.net/video/CxrZFx5CYIM/видео.html

@@UrbanBackyardGardening Thanks for taking the time to answer to this question, my first year planting pumpkins they are increasing in size each day ,so my first order of business is to find me some potassium, it would be really disappointing not to have any pumpkins at the end of the growing season ,which for me will end around the end of September, thanks again and I valued your advice 👍

@@verawallace9055 Its a pleasure, yes great idea to give them some boost since you only have 2 more months to grow them, that will be plenty of time for them to get big, be careful with overfeeding.
