Hi Alex, a very good looking rod. I purchased a Helios 3D 9' AFTMA #8 rod a while back and have regretted it since fishing with it on the T. As most old anglers who fish the Taupo Lake and its rivers, I was still thinking of the old days and had in mind a replacement for the 8 or 10 weight rods that I had smashed the last season. The technology’s of today’s rod builders is so good that I overestimated my rod requirements and have realised that what I needed was a 6 weight rod and now you have just described the exact rod I really want and need. Unfortunately the Orvis dealers are not interested in doing a swop! Bummer, I do like the look of that mat black finish. Cheers mate. Harera
Just bought a Hardy Ultralite 9ft 9 inches #5 and I am in love, copes with grumpy 3 and half pound wild Brown Trout in fast water, great feel down to the butt, great for short line work. Got it from Sportfish for 390 Quid, a bargain designed by World Fly Fishing Champion Howard Croston, weighs only 2.75 Ounces.
Hya Alex the context of your channel is interesting, informative, educational, entertaining, recent and relevant. Can I please request from you that you get out onto the flats again for a lot more segments of “Kingfish on Fly”. I don’t think for one second that I’d be the only one wanting more of this kind of content. The trout stuff that you’ve been posting is quality and I can only hope that you’ll give my request some thought for the future. If you lot are in lockdown again in the future and for a undetermined length of time would you consider focussing on presenting a weekly or monthly segment on say “Fish of the Week/ Month” covering everything about that particular species and then focussing on successful fly fishing techniques that will go a long way to helping anglers like myself to work towards increasing our catch rates. Bream, Skippy, Flathead, Mullet, Herring, Cobbler, Whiting, Gar Fish on Fly. NZ is a well known mecca for trout worldwide but then again there are so many other interesting species worthy of your consideration. Stay well and safe matey. Cheers Clive 🤓
Nicely balanced review- some tech and then actual experience with the rod. Much appreciated. I had a H3 6wt and 8wt and though great rods, my heart is for Scott.
I have been figuratively drooling over this rod since the announcement of this rod last month! I appreciate the thoughts on it tho! I am still new (3 months) and running an Orvis Clearwater 5wt! Watching this makes me feel good about continuing to learn on what I have!
5 weight. See the comment I just added to Friday Filler Blackout. Great video BTW. Took my 5 year old granddaughter fishing for the first time today. What a great day. Caught a bunch of fish and she can’t wait to get back on the water. What a great day!!!
Hard to beat anything Orvis puts out. You ever get around to doing any surf fishing with fly rods? I use a 6wt to 8 wt when I do. That might be cool to see you doing.
That orange Mirage LT is so sick, wish I would have picked one up while they were around. I always watch your videos and think, about how I missed out on that color.
Just purchased a Orvis Clearwater 10’ 3weight ! Can’t wait to give it a fish ! I’m normally a 9’ 5weight . The 3weight and Extra foot in length I find is more delicate and easier to set hooks . Great review, but to pricey ! As a former dealer of Sage , GLoomis , Loop , Guideline all high end ! Imo no need , catches the angler more than the fish 😂😂 Each to their own , great review Alex and yes a great Rod 👌👌
I know it's a long way to tow your boat Alex but Parengarenga Harbour has to be your next destination video series. Is Polaroiding kingies and snapper in the channels and flats fact or fiction. So little has been written or shot in the area if the fishing is good your vids will be epic.
Hi Alex, thanks for the rod brief,, abit out of my price range but I can dream. I may have mentioned this request in an earlier vid , would really enjoy a lake segment, Id appreciate some hints here and to be honest Im sure other may aswell, cheers man.
@@TrippinOnTrout I have recently caught your lake fishing bits pal, I guess my question in reference was more on shore fishing.hints and set up etc, dont mean to go on here.
It’s a nice addition to the Helios 3 range in terms of length, but I just feel that Orvis could have created a new graphic for it rather than reuse the one from the old Helios 2 rod tubes.
Looks like a great rod! Would love to try this #8 weight rod on big bonefish here in New Caledonia ;). Maybe you will have the #8 for kingies next summer!!? cheers.
I’m gonna go a 9 weight for the kingies this year bro. That would prob be perfect for your bonefish tho. Would love to visit your fishery - it looks epic!
Alex, I tried responding directly to your message about the blackout rod I just purchased but it did not go through. So to answer your question I purchased the 5 weight 9’5”. Or is Ed advised it would be shipped Oct. 1. I feel like driving to Manchester to pick it up when ready. There is also the Battenkill river with its wild little trout to visit while I’m up there. Also want to do a float trip on the Lehigh river which this rod is perfect for. Reel shipped today so will put the Scientific Angler line on it. Should I stay with the 5 weight or load it up a bit with the 6? Thanks for the recommendation BTW.
How is it for fishing streamers? I’ve tried fishing rods longer than 9’ with streamers and sometimes the tip is too soft to pin the fish well. I realize this rod is mainly for dries and nymphing but I’m curious. Thanks. Great vid.
do you have any insider news if Orvis will continue to sell the mirage lt pumpkin orange color. That type of color is not available on their website anymore :(
Hi, Can you tell me how bands or how is the fealling of the blackout if you compare with H3D 5# ? Is it pritty the same or lot diferent? I like to hear your opinion I had H3D 5# so I use him for havier fishing scanarios. Thank you so much in advance and tight lines from Gacka river in Croatia. Hrvoje.
Might be a dumb question, but are you sponsored/ endorsed by Orvis? All good if you are, as they make some amazing gear. As always keep up the good work and hope you are out of lockdown soon. Cheers from Tasmania
I am these days yes mate but started off buying their gear myself. I has only really become available here in the last couple of years! Level 3 tomorrow for us so prob going fishing...!
Damn brotha 🤣 just watched this vid, " by the way top notch! 👍" now I'm leaning towards this bad boy! Struggling w HD HF now this one Yonkers! Here's a good question, gonna get you on this one mate..... if you had to pick 1 and only 1 whaaat would it be

Yeah a six weight is really as heavy you been for trout here aye mate.
Maybe you should sell it and put the money towards a 6…?

Scott make stunning rods too aye. Doesn't matter what you go for as long as you enjoy using it.
Great review, fishing a recon 6 weight and am hoping to add one of these in an 8 for salt. I’ve been impressed with Orvis rods lately.

Just bought one, for my NZ trip to Rotorua and Tongariro. cant wait to use it. Thank you.
Hope you have a great trip!
Great informative video. Some day I’ll be over there. Best regards!!!
Just placed order. D model (other sold out) blue mirage LT. Orange not offered. Thanks for heads up!

Fair enough bro, I would almost go for no graphic on it at all and keep it real stealthy
been waiting for this!
Sounds really tempting the way you describe it Alex. However, if I get another rod, my wife will have me locked up in the nuthouse...
So you’re getting one then…?😆
Please demo and teach us how to execute a reach cast when you can budd ... Oh and never boring

1st. Like - after that enjoying in video - Regards.......

Im not sure bro, having not fished streamers with it yet. I reckon it would do the job but might not be a rod you would buy especially for that..
do you have any insider news if Orvis will continue to sell the mirage lt pumpkin orange color. That type of color is not available on their website anymore :(
I will ask mate..
Would be nice if Kilwell could get stock of the other colours in the hydros as well. Black is boring

H3F but that’s for what I do mostly. Could be different for the fishing U do…🤷♂️
some more fly tying...?
The extra 5”, does this seem to give you more power than a standard 9’ 5 wt? Almost a 5 1/2 wt.?
Very much so bro yes
@@TrippinOnTrout Do you how hard to find that burnt Orange LT is?? Damn! But so cool!
Howler bros hats is that a new Zealand brand or here in the states
It’s based in Houston bro🤙
As an all round North Island backcountry rod for summer duties, what would you recommend? Orvis F 9 foot 6 weight?
I would say prob the 5 F bro for north backcountry
Extra length makes it deadly lol

you are a BAD boy Alex we all know its not the size that attracts the flies LOL
