Two guys in the street pulling off this performance. Beyond words. No record label, no promoters, no marketing hype. Just pure, raw, authentic talent and passion for music.
They were busking in Brighton. Brighton is special because you don't need a license to busk. The city council expressly welcomes musicians to busk in the district. There's even a YT video about 'Busking in Brighton' that shows some of the places Ren played at (alone, with Sam, Chinchilla, The Big Push).
I saw Sam Tompkins live at a small venue in Seattle and few weeks ago. He was opening for Myles Smith. Nobody knew who he was but he won over the crowd so quickly. So goooood
The thing to know about Ren's busking videos, especially with Sam, are that they are done on the fly. That's where you see all the communication in the moment, like about when they're done ad libbing and are ready to switch leads. It's also why you get mistakes, because they're just going for something in the moment and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes they had a loose plan, but often Ren didn't even know the song Sam was singing. Hence nontraditional arrangements and additions... he was just making it up, following Sam's lead. Sam fairly recently opened for Beiber on tour, but he keeps hitting snags in his career taking off from what I understand. He's a signed artist now, though, so he and Ren haven't been able to collaborate recently and they have at least one unreleased song the label won't let them release because it isn't the direction they want for Sam. His music is good, though. Sam was like 21 here and Ren 27ish. The story they tell is that Ren was going home early from busking when he was 23 and came across Sam - 16 at the time - trying to busk a capella, but you could only hear him if you were right next to him. Ren offered him his amp and guitar but Sam couldn't play, so Ren stayed and played with him for an hour then let Sam take all the money (5x what he had been making). Sam credits that experience with giving him a ton of confidence and also with his decision to learn guitar. Ren basically taught him showmanship. They kept up on social media while Ren was sick and then when Ren moved back to Brighton they got back together. This video and 2 others with Sam were the first to go viral for Ren, and he credits them with convincing him he could have a second chance at really having a career. They both speak so highly and fondly of each other. They're very good friends, just like Ren remains with the guys from The Big Push. I agree with the other commentor that their song Blind Eyed is amazing, but like a lot of Ren's fans, I prefer the stripped down versions to the official version, which is super produced for a Ren track. Maybe do both. The clearest audio for a stripped down version is the Blind Eyed MC performance... the busking version isn't as clear but is also great and they said they hadn't performed it or even planned to before that one, they just went for it. There's also one people like that is "featuring angry car park attendant" which is cheeky and has its own appeal... but isn't one for serious vocal analysis.
Sam & Ren were perpetually late for these busking sessions. People used to wait for them to show up & the Brighton cops would shut the whole street down once the crowd gathered. 🎉
Loved the analysis. Ren brings out the best with whomever he collabs with. He gives shine instead of trying to take away shine. So what is it about Ren that separates him from most other artists out there? It's obviously not one thing. Many artists can sing, play multiple instruments and even rap and produce. But Ren has extra..His ability to really connect with his whole self, mind body and soul. He has a certain confidence and authenticity that is palpable yet he's humble at the same time .He also has the innate ability of how to put music together. He always keeps listeners captivated and engaged with how he switches elements, usually every 4 bars. His ability to use silence in a song as well. You've only heard half of the colors in the rainbow of Rens vocals...Hopefully you'll get to hear the full color palette.
At this time Ren and Sam carried all their equipment in a wheelbarrow that you can see in the background. In spite of the crowds they pulled ,they were poor and didn't have everything they needed but didn't allow it to stop them . I think that is a more inspirational story than just criticism for not having everything.
Their original song Blind Eyed is fantastic! (There are a lot of versions out there: the MC Sessions version has the best sound and cleanest vocals; the Angry Car Park Attendant version is the most fun. Watching the two in succession is a lot of fun!) Sam's solo work is great, too! Lose It All is my favorite of his songs.
FYI, Sam Tompkins was signed to Republic Records a little over a year ago, & he's just released his debut album. I'm glad you were honest about some of the pitchiness in this one. I still personally love it, but I always cringe the teensiest bit when it's a bit sharp, and other reactors don't seem to want to offend by being honest about the flaws. Really enjoying your reactions 😊
Mic settings - I'm sure I've seen a video where Ren mentions that with the makeshift rig they had for busking didn't have enough channels to allow reverb on both mics so the one that did have it became the lead vocal mic (sounds like it may be tweaked a little in post, which is fair enough). Busking (street performing) - while I'm not in their league, it's something I've done in the past. The hardest/scariest bit I found was taking the guitar out of the case/setting up the mic. Up until that point you were just a person carrying stuff. As soon as you start setting up people notice that you're going to "do something" and that always got the adrenalin going. At that stage you could technically just stop & pack up ... but there'd be something so embarrassing about that that just putting on the guitar and doing a song is a simpler/easier option. Once you do that the fun begins!
I’ve never seen someone sing a song from The Weekend and sound better than them! And Sam is from the UK same as Ren and Chinchilla, Sam is now in the US making great music! But Reb found him in the UK singing in the corner when he was younger and Ren took him under his wing and helped him and help made Sam Thompkins do everything he is doing now
Hi Shari! I have the impression that "Busking" is not something that you have a long familiarity with, is that so? Any way; Ren & Sam were having some fun, playing to a crowd that was there for them, and honing their craft, and making some cash. Ren has a real skill of attracting other creatives to work with him. He has found many of them in Brighton. Keep Reacting!
Everybody is going to tell you to react to "Blind Eyed" by Ren and Sam. But the best version is on the "music Crowns" RUclips channel Unbelievable performance

I do like the beginning of the set, both are creative with their busking versions of the cover of the songs. I had to mute the rest of it when Ren went a bit crazy on the guitar and it was painful on my ears. :) but finished out and hope it did land and count as at least one more view. Sam does have some beautiful song that he has done when he was older, and now on tour and has a recording contract. Sometimes he high falsetto hurts my sensitive ears, but he is really good singer. Ren has multiple voices, all depends on the song and what he is trying to convey. He has a beautiful baritone and when he sings a love song straight with out oddities tossed in, they are really stunning.
Sam Thompkins has several songs that he has written and they are amazing there’s a song Hero it’s so awesome. He is not in the US performing at concerts
Fantastic reaction video ❤ wanna see where air guitar started and the same feeling Ren plays with? Joe cocker "some help frol my friends". I know you'll appreciate it ❤❤
Sam Tompkins is a singer/songwriter from Brighton, UK. He is an incredible artist who recently opened up for Justin Bieber in Norway. Sam has several songs, “Bloodline,” “Hero,” “Follow Suit,” “Whole,” and “Not So Grey,” that address some serious issues like family, mental health, suicide, and other struggles. “You Broke My Heart So Gently,” “Critical,” “You're The Love Of My Life,” “Google Luv,” “Ten Feet Apart,” and his cover of Tears For Fears' “Mad World” are beautiful, but his entire catalog is well-worth listening to. I usually prefer the acoustic version of Sam’s songs. His release, “Time Will Fly,” is currently my favorite song of his and one of my favorite songs overall, with “See Me” and “Lose It All”” running close behind. His rendition of “How To Save A Life (Cover)” is also stunning and really reveals his soulfulness. Unfortunately, it is way too short, not the full-length version of the original. Sam just released his debut album “Hi, My Name Is Insecure,” which is truly beautiful. Sam’s collaborations with Ren are definitely a must. Take a look at their busking sessions and music videos. “Blind Eyed,” “Earned It /Man's World / Falling,” “Walking on the Moon/No Diggity,” “Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin'),” “Latch,” “Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session),” “Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren),” “Improvising Around Stevie Wonder,” “Live in the Streets of Brighton, UK,” “What Went Wrong” Part I&II).” Their song “Blind Eyed” is a fan favorite, and they recorded several live versions, each unique, and an official music video. Looking forward to following you down the Sam Tompkins rabbit hole, if you decide to go on that journey. Here is the link to Sam's YT channel: www.youtube.com/@SamTompkinsUK
Shari! Jump down the Floor Jansen rabbit hole! very deep hole. She sings in the symphonic metal band Nightwish from Finland. NIGHTWISH - Ghost Love Score (OFFICIAL LIVE). (the one with 34 million viewers is the one you should play.) Don't miss this singer you will love her she is amazing and you can learn a lot from studying her singing. One of the best singers in the world.
They only put reverb on the lead mic, small Roland cubes (speakers) means it's cleaner that way. Also, they perform differently every time, never afraid to experiment live even with unproven concepts. Also, Sam is who Justin Bieber wishes he sounded like lol.
So, 9 days after you posted this video, have you been out busking yet? You expressed a strong desire to do so, is there anything stopping you from just going into your local town and singing for an hour or so next time you go into town? Thanks for this. Was interesting hearing your thoughts. Last thing you want to hear is me singing. I am so flat I can hear it myself!
Haha I would need a speaker first. I have everything else. I think I’ll try to do this in the spring of next year when the weather is nice and hopefully by then I’ll have a speaker. I purchased one this last summer from a local music store and it never came so I took it as a sign that I need to save $ and invest in a speaker at a later time. Spring 2025!!! I’ll make a video :)
@@thisisshari Oh, great. Will you be able to livestream the sessions for us? I love watching Gorran Kendall from The Big Push, who is busking his way around some European countries.
Pitchey a bit there but busking on the street with no in ears just monitors but he's hitting Abel Tesfay and Abel had a lot of trouble staying on pitch with these songs live earlier on. Yeah he falls off with Elisha but the point was made nonetheless
afaik Sam was on Tour with Justin.... either Bieber or Timberlake, i always forget xD i agree with you that there are some Hickups (wich i don't give a sh*t about^^) but than again, don't forget that there is the least amount of Postproduction compared to the stuff you listened before :) (he is a Master in Post of Livestuff though)
What are you talking about??? That was an incredible vocal performance by Ren! Perhaps if you hadn't been so focused on pausing, twice, during his vocals, merely to point out the bleedin' obvious, that there's a lot of people, you may have noticed... You were rhapsodising about Sam's vocal range but completely ignored the fact that Ren's range is much wider. In fact in every single respect Ren's vocals are superior to Sam's. Power, range, control all better by far. He has an instictive understanding of vocal light and shade, which Sam lacks. His tone is always immaculate, his voice is always full of character and he has emotion dripping from every single syllable! What really sets him apart though, is all the delicate little vocal touches and nuances, which aren't flashy but which are absolutely beautiful! Sam has a decent enough voice but it's nothing special, nothing that we haven't heard a million times before. You'll find a Sam or two on every tv talent show going. You won't find a Ren there! Sam's a bit of a one trick pony, for me. He does that one trick reasonably well but that's all he does, over and over and over again. Zero understanding of vocal light and shade. He's also frequently flat or off-key. Nope, on vocals alone, Ren's on another level entirely and he usually does it while playing an instrument, brilliantly and while doing all the live audio engineering. Add in all his other incredible talents and it's not even a contest! I've seen a lot of vocal coaches react to this and while most liked Sam's voice, none thought it was better than Ren's. A few indicated that Ren's vocals were superior. None said the reverse. I guess you're one of those vocal coaches who only understands and teaches in a very narrow band of vocal styles and is utterly lost outside of that...
I caught pretty much the same things that you did. I just disagree with you on one issue. Ren is not that much more improved but they now have better equipment and better placing for the best vocal sounds. Being outdoors doesn't make it easier to get good sound quality on the minimalist of mics and equipment. The equipment belongs to Ren. Sam was singing by himself with no equipment on the streets and Ren was walking past him and said try this mic and amp. They started singing together and the crowds formed. Ren was getting big crowds even when he sang alone.
Thanks so much for the respectful way that you disagreed with what I said in the video. What a breath of fresh air :) I definitely feel like the runs I've heard from Ren in recent videos are cleaner than the runs in this one. Could be that this wasn't rehearsed and he was just improvising or maybe in the 6 years that its been since this performance he has developed better vocal agility. I guess I'd have to watch more videos from this time to say for sure. I do agree that singing outside can be tricky. Yes I've heard that story about how they met since posting this video, it's so cool. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Same Microphones both of them. Reb can manipulate his voice and it’s beautiful! He sings in different tones to fit each song. He is paying homage to the artist and the songs he is playing but at the same time adding something to it so it’s Ren’s way as well
There are two Sams in Ren's life: this one, Sam Tompkins, is a performance collaborator in front of the mike and camera. The other is Samuel Perry-Falvey, Ren's cinematographer and co-director on many of his videos, especially Hi Ren, the Tales, and MG1 and MG3.
Ran purposely standing away from the mic. So you can hear Sam’s voice awhile lot more. I think your friend was closer to the Mike he would drown Sam’s voice a bit too much.
That second verse run was absolutely NOT pitchy at all!!! He changed it up to end it in a different way from the first verse. So either your hearing is bad or you commented before you actually listened.
Haha I commented after rewinding it, and I’d like to think that despite the fact that I LOVE to blast my music in my headphones all the time….my ears aren’t bad. Slow it down to .75 speed and tell me if the last two notes of the run sound like they’re in tune to you. They sound pitchy to me. Even the “spect” part of the word “expect” is a little below the pitch.
?? I don't wanna distract the artist or mar their sound by yelling my approval until that singing is done. I want to appreciate it. Not mess with the painter when he/she is painting.
You aren't the only one that does this so don't take it too personally. These videos are supposed to be reactions, not dissections. Stopping and waffling on and then going back twenty seconds to waffle some more really drives me mad. Play the video. Talk a little while it plays if you have to and then when the video ends you can waffle as much as you like. You can play the video again if you like. Stop it and go back. Waffle some more and go back again..... Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. You get the idea. So remember reactions, not dissections.
Some of yall sound so rude, it's her channel and she can make videos however she wants. Maybe she wants to dissect things, alot of channels do that and don't just react. If you don't end up liking how she does it then watch someone who does. Yall act like you're the one running these channels. 😅

But Reb found him in the UK singing in the corner when he was younger and Ren took him under his wing and helped him and help made Sam Thompkins do everything he is doing now
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sam once did a spot at a Justin Beiber concert and also sang a duet with him.
But the best version is on the "music Crowns" RUclips channel
Unbelievable performance
🔥🔥🔥
Your reactions to Ren have been very entertaining... Thanks... and more Ren please.
Yes!!.. You have been living under a rock. An English language rock.
These reaction videos have opened the door to discover some... world vocal talent.

Sam Tompkins is a beast and if you do some of his solo stuff, like Lose it All, I’ll be all over it.
I’ve read that title more than once in this comment section I might just have to check it out!

Shari, Sam is amazing just like Ren. You need to do Blind eye. There is so much more Ren and friends. Each friend is really good.
I would pay thousands of dollars to be there......
ren n sam..blind eyed mc session...sam and ren at their best
If you want some solo Sam, check out "Lose It All". Any of the live performances.
JUST REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A SAM IN THE EARLY YEARS AND NEEDS GUIDANCE! SINGING IN PUBLIC IS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE!
Ren is beatboxing to make it sound like there’s a drummer in falling
Ren had a Prince Like guitar solo...... That is how Prince does it. It is always like... i guess he meant to make that sound.
For some more recent vocal performances, please react to Fred Again Mashup..it'll help to read his description and or pinned comment
Shari!
Jump down the Floor Jansen rabbit hole! very deep hole.
She sings in the symphonic metal band Nightwish from Finland.
NIGHTWISH - Ghost Love Score (OFFICIAL LIVE).
(the one with 34 million viewers is the one you should play.)
Don't miss this singer you will love her she is amazing and you can learn a lot from studying her singing.
One of the best singers in the world.
REN’s issue with the guitar toward the end of the performance was that he wanted to be Jimmy Hendrix ❤
They only put reverb on the lead mic, small Roland cubes (speakers) means it's cleaner that way. Also, they perform differently every time, never afraid to experiment live even with unproven concepts.
Also, Sam is who Justin Bieber wishes he sounded like lol.
Blind Eyed Mc Sessions video please
REN always pure 🔥🔥 but PLEASE try some of Sam's earlier catalogue like CRITICAL or KING'S or MY BROTHER or GOOGLE LUV or CHARLIE 🎶🎵🍯🤌🔥🙏💪🐝🍀🇬🇧
You have to try Ren and Chinchilla Drake cover" One Dance"
Ooh that sounds like “yes” lol
Yeah this was from back around 2018?
@@payntpot7623 That's a great idea! haha I will do that :)
Pitchey a bit there but busking on the street with no in ears just monitors but he's hitting Abel Tesfay and Abel had a lot of trouble staying on pitch with these songs live earlier on. Yeah he falls off with Elisha but the point was made nonetheless
You must check out Ren and Sam doing their own song Blind Eyed😮 (MC Sessions version)Enjoy!
🎉
afaik Sam was on Tour with Justin.... either Bieber or Timberlake, i always forget xD
i agree with you that there are some Hickups (wich i don't give a sh*t about^^) but than again, don't forget that there is the least amount of Postproduction compared to the stuff you listened before :)
(he is a Master in Post of Livestuff though)
It was with Justin Bieber

Nina Simone cover 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sam opened for Justin Bieber.
He is paying homage to the artist and the songs he is playing but at the same time adding something to it so it’s Ren’s way as well
Ya right let's see alica keys do that on a street corner.
Not sure but I think this is the”Sam” part of the “ren and sam” videos
There are two Sams in Ren's life: this one, Sam Tompkins, is a performance collaborator in front of the mike and camera. The other is Samuel Perry-Falvey, Ren's cinematographer and co-director on many of his videos, especially Hi Ren, the Tales, and MG1 and MG3.
You're right to express doubt. The videographer 'Sam' is Sam Perry-Falvey, yet another ridiculously talented RenFriend.
Rens videoographer is named sam, but this sam isn't him.
I’ve heard Ren sing with no microphone this is REN’s music not cause is a microphone
Ran purposely standing away from the mic. So you can hear Sam’s voice awhile lot more.
I think your friend was closer to the Mike he would drown Sam’s voice a bit too much.
Tens mic has no effects That’s why he switched for man’s world
That second verse run was absolutely NOT pitchy at all!!!
You sound really rude, there's no need to be like that over someone's opinion of music 😅
Yeah, na it was pitchy. She nailed his pitchy parts…all good though, lad can sing. Ren is just Ren…a legend
Too many pauses
?? I don't wanna distract the artist or mar their sound by yelling my approval until that singing is done. I want to appreciate it. Not mess with the painter when he/she is painting.
I’m glad to know what approach you’d take on *your* channel. Welcome to mine and how I do things :)
The original video is available in all its glory for your listening pleasure whenever you don’t want to listen to a reactor react.
I don't think Sam is that good at all. High pitched too much. He literally hurts my ears. Ren is far far superior.
@@CharmCityWRX they both have their own talents, doesn't mean one person is far far superior over another person. They just love music and it shows. And they both let eachother shine in their different moments.
@@Bethany0420 it's called having an opinion and my opinion Sams singing isn't that good. End of story.
@@CharmCityWRX I'd say his career says otherwise
