In this clip, Jon B reflected on once feeling threatened by Robin Thicke's success, noting their similarities as both coming up under Babyface as white R&B singers. Although he's a fan of Thicke's music he remembers at the time being humbled by the "Blurred Lines" singer seemingly surpassing him in fame, where at one point he even half-heartedly challenged him to a singing battle back in the mid 2000's, though now he says he'd much rather prefer a collaboration.
Later on in the segment, Jon B speaks on how he's released several albums independently after 2004's Stronger Everyday, adding that he's been able to maintain continued success by adapting to the ever-changing music industry since the golden age of R&B.

Robin Thicke writes all his songs and writes for other artists and does background vocals for many artists. He wrote Jordan Knights whole album including "give it to you", wrote and produced for Mary J Blige, usher, Jennifer Hudson, Christina aguilera, produced for lil Wayne and more 😂

Bobby Caldwell and Michael McDonald didn't sing R&B as their labeled genre. They were white singers that had very soulful voices that had a song or 2-3 that crossed over onto the R&B chart, and Michael McDonald had a collabo with Patty Labelle whereas Jon B sang strictly R&B that may have had some pop cross over.
I like both artists and anyone who can add to the genre is welcome. What I like about both artists is that they do not act like they invented this and they give props to the ones who were there before them.
