- Sturmey Archer gears on a Brompton - they work reliably with a minimum of effort
But what if something goes wrong?
This short video explains how to adjust your Brompton hub gears easily for best performance
We also show how the gears are actuated using the lever / cable / gear indicator chain
Just remember - its not some magical dark art, anyone - yes you - can do it!
Brompton should be paying you for explaining how to use their products so well! Thanks, really informative 👍
Exactly. In fact, I was directed to this video by Brompton support!
Your instructional videos are ten times better than Brompton's own videos! Thanks!
Thank you so much! And thank you for watching!
I wish my mechanic were so humble, patient and clear
Thank you for watching and for your comments! Ah not always so calm…. Hence the outtakes!
And hot
Thank you for this. On Sunday I was riding my Brompton along our local trailway, dropped it into first to tackle a short but vicious slope, got halfway up and the hub gear changed up into third. I just about managed to mash my way up to the top.
Headed home with the hub randomly changing gears. When I got home I noticed that the locknut was halfway down the thread. Had a search and found this video, a really useful and clearly explained guide. Followed the instructions and got it all set up as per your video. Took it out for a test ride yesterday and all is well.
Thanks again for the great service you provide to the Brompton community with these Videos.
Thank you for watching
We are glad the video was of some help and you got your gears sorted
Knowing we helped made our day :-)
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you so much for making this video!! Why did no one else make it so simple!?
Can I just say a HUGE thank you for fixing my brand new Brompton (indirectly), saving a lot of time to take it to the shop!!! Love from London 😘
So you had such a problem with your brand new Brompton as well? After my second ride I had to loose ends hanging at my bike...
Brilliant clear explanation. At the end of a long journey I finally worked out that it wasn’t just that my legs were tired it was that second gear wasn’t engaging. A watch of your video a minor tightening of the cable and second gear was restored. Many thanks.
Phew! So glad it helped! Thank you for watching!
True to your name, this was indeed brilliant and helpful! My local bike shop guys tried to fix my derailleur gear, but I now realize they were messing with the hub gear, which soon became wonky. Now I've got it fixed for real all by myself!
Wohoo! So glad it helped! Thank you for commenting and watching!
These films are brillliantly clear and easy to follow. I wish I'd found them sooner.
Thank you so much for watching and leaving your kind comment
If you have any suggestions for useful videos - please just let us know
Really brilliant explanation of how to fix a problem with my Brompton which has dogged me for almost a year! The problem was first caused by my local Brompton 'specialist' who did not reassemble the gear link after a tyre change. Thank you so much!
So so glad it helped!!! Thank you for watching!
Really helpful video, straight to the point and detailed enough that I was able to follow the steps. I have just purchased my first Brompton (used) and by the time I got it home I could not change into any of the hub gears. Thought i’d been sold a duff one but your video helped me to identify that the cable anchor had come undone. Now it’s all working fine. Huge thanks. When I need to buy some spares or accessories, I will be coming toBrilliant Bikes!
Phew so glad your Brompton is OK now! Thank for your lovely comments and for watching
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!
Thought I’d broken my 6 speed Brompton as gear 1 wasn’t selecting. Few videos I viewed were useless, then I remembered seeing a video about the hub on your channel. All fixed now! Thank you so much!
So so glad it helped! Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment!
I watched this video so long ago when I was first thinking about a Brompton, now I come back because after receiving mine there was a weird noise when I was in the highest gear and pedaling on quiet pavement, even after doing the gear adjustment truth the hole... thank you for taking everything apart and starting from scratch, it was a full two turned loose inside the Hub so there was no way I was going to get it right without disconnecting the chain completely and screwing that rod in. Thank you so much!
So glad it helped, it’s so easy when you know how and a mystery until then.
Thank you for watching
Very nice guidelines, you saved my day!! My brompton now is back to normal after following how you adjust and installed it!
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment. This is the reason we keep making them. To try and help, and knowing we have helped has made our day.
Top content, lighthearted and straight to the point. Able to follow instructions and better than the official brompton instructions.
Referred back to this one today as my hub gears stopped working properly on a short ride home! Guess what the problem might have been?
Yarp - the lock nut had worked loose and the adjuster was busy working itself free of the thread! Now sorted, degreased, oiled, wiped off, re-installed and adjusted... ✅ 👏🏻
Thank you much... 👍🏻 💚
Thanks for watching and for the feedback
We’re glad it helped
really helped me sort out my slipping chain , who'd have thought such a minor adjustment to the gear indicator change would make such a difference
Thanks for the kind comment and for watching our video. We are glad it was of some use
Thanks that helped me understand how it works. The Brompton Manual don't mention the part how to adjust the gear indicator chain at all!
On a 3 or 6 speed gearing, put 2nd gear in and check that 1 mm is showing in the securing wheel nut... Got it!
Thank you so much for watching and for your comments.
Really glad if it was of some help :)
Saved me a trip to the bike shop and I understand how the gears work much better now - thank you!
Thank you so much for watching! And really glad it helped!
Every couple of months this video saves me. Thank you!
Phew! So glad it helps! Thanks you for watching a few times 😀
Excellent video thank you. Rode by new Brompton last week, got home , chain missing!. Lesson learnt. Ged
Whoops!
Thanks for watching and really glad it’s sorted!
This was such a huge help, thank you very much! I'd had a sneaking suspension that my gears were off and was starting to think that I was going completely insane, and sure enough, the chain had slipped and I'd been spending all my time in third.
This was really useful.... I haven't removed my rear wheel yet, so good to know the best way to readjust the hub gears.
So glad it was useful! It’s much nicer to know how to remove and reinstall your rear wheel before it’s cold and wet and your on the way to work!
Thanks for watching!
@@brilliantbikes a pleasure... I love your videos and look forward to them when they are released.

The gear indicator chain can if turned in too much will lock before it is directly in line with the gear cable bracket. After inserting fully turn back half a turn before setting as per your instructions. My cable came loose, I lost the locknut and bought the cheapest on eBay to get a new locknut. When I reassembled to the 1mm mark, my gears were hit and miss and very hard to change, I had calibrated it in 3rd gear. Your movie corrected my error. I also used mole grip and plumbers pliers to make the locknut unable to work loose again. Nail varnish, superglue will do but proper threadlock will be best.
Oh my god, thank you for explaining how to adjust it properly. In the past i just chanced and eyeballed it until i got it right, this time it was still a bit of that, but i was armed with the knowledge and it seemed to have went quicker and result was better.
Really glad it helped and thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for this. Took my two-week old Brompton out this morning and halfway through the trip the hub gear stopped shifting. Checked this video, followed the very clear instructions and it's working again ... well, apart from the missing lock nut which, hopefully, the store still have and wonder where it came from.
So glad it helped and hopefully you are all up and running again!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you very much, so detailled and clear in instructions as well brilliant shooting! Looking forward to dive in all other your videos to get to know my Brompton better! Cheers from Turkey!
Many thanks!!!
Finally an amazing video with clear video & audio instructions
Amazing job done , thx
Thank you, I just hot the shifter replaced the the shop must of missed the lock... As soon as you said that I had a look (currently on a train) and yes... There it is dangling there!
Phew! Glad it was still there.
Thanks for watching!
It's thanks to this amazingly attractive woman ❤️ with her wealth of knowledge and ability to educate with her blend of wit and sarcasm that I bought my first Brompton. Brilliant!!!!
Brilliant video! Thank you. You saved me a trip to the shop in a Belgian heatwave 👏🏻🔥
Thank you so much! Second day with my new bike and the hub stopped working correctly, you made it clear what was wrong and how to fix, amazing.
Brilliantissimo! Helpful with lovely British accent. My pink Brompton is ready for the end of lockdown soon in France.
Thank you for your super Brompton videos. My BWR 3 speed became decoupled today during a (bumpy) ride. Because of your video - I knew exactly what to do. Cleaned my chain yesterday too!
To be honeset I did it by hearing the sound, just feel it as well, no need to adjust to 1mm in speed 2. But this is a very good video, listen to this lady advice if you fail
Thank you very much for this highly needed Video!! I had problems with my new Bike and because of Lockdown couldn’t visit my Bikeshop. They send me a link to this video and I could solve the Problem!
I noticed during my second ride with the new Brompton that I couldn’t switch to the 3. Gear anymore.
At home I saw, the two loose endings.
I tried to connect the loose endings in 2. Gear (like you should do when changing the wheel) but couldn’t.
After watching your video I was able to connect.
So thank you very much, you saved my Christmas ride ☺️👍🏻!!
Thank you - we're really glad it was useful!
It's a relatively common occurrence (unfortunately) with new bikes - it should be checked during the PDI (pre-delivery inspection) - but good to know how to fix it, as it can happen later too
@@brilliantbikes Absolutely! I wish you a happy new year and I am glad I found a channel like yours to help me get to know my new bike :D
Very clear and useful. I love how easy Brompton are to work on. Thank you for the video! 😊
This is very helpful and neat solution of adjusting hub gear! Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for watching
Really well explained.
Great place to buy spares from too. Always a personal thanks on the receipt!
Thank you for watching, your lovely comment and for choosing to order from us. We really appreciate it all.
Thank you for an uncomplicated explanation...
Our please so glad it helped! Thank you for watching
I just received a raw lacquer S6L "Demo Bike" from Lakeside Bicycles in Portland Oregon.
I happily got on it but was dismayed to find that I couldn't change gears.
Thanks to this video I see that the Gear Indicator Chain is loose from the Cable Anchor.
Thank you watching and for your kind comment. So glad it helped, that’s why we make them :).
2:53 Saved me a lot of time again.
Thank you so much! And thank you for watching! So glad it helped!
I was taught to adjust it so the end was flush, rather than 1mm proud...has always worked for me from my 1st 3-speed (early '60s) to my current Brompton...so, about 60 years now LOL.
10/10 for video. 7/10 for cleanliness of the chain :-)
Thank you for watching again - we’ll try harder with cleanliness ;-)
@@brilliantbikes Nice to see a bike that actually appears to be used!
Great video! Very helpful. I turned on captions to help my American ears!
Thanks, this was really helpful. I've just replaced the back tyre and I needed this info!
Thank you for watching and so glad it was helpful 😀
This is also helpful information in case you ever get a flat tire on the rear wheel.
Many thanks for watching and yes!
Super video, you need a virtual hug! Changing from 3rd to 2nd, or from 2nd to 1st requires a lot of pressure on my bike... armed with the knowledge from your video I’ll check the setup. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this video!! I've been watching your channel for sometime now. I got the dreaded rear wheel puncture this evening. I couldn't have fix it without this video and the one about removing the rear wheel. Keep up the good work and stay safe :)
Thankyou! Been putting it off for ages since I changed my rear tyre.
Extremely helpful, thank you! Feels great being able to do simple bike maintenance myself. Empowered! 😬💪
Brilliant video, lovely lady! Thanks so much for this! X
Brilliant and simple thank you for a very easy to follow video. Saved my day..
So glad it helped and thank you for watching!
Thanks for all your informative videos...I really like to watch them! ;-) I set up my gear now correctly!
Thank you for watching and glad it helped!
Well done. Another scrape you’ve helped me out of.
Great video with clear instructions! Hope to see more videos on tech/maintenance/tips and tricks for a smoother bike!
Would love to see Brompton make a 3-Speed derailleur. Great video on the hub gear.
Thanks for watching and the feedback.
I think the method of changing is just as simple as possible - the two speed - three speed would need some type of indexing - so more complex
What a blessing this video was for me 👍🏼👌🏼❤
Thank you so much for watching and really glad it helped!
@@brilliantbikes 👍🏼👌🏼❤
Another great video and really clear explanation. I've just adjusted my gears -it wasn't engaging 3rd - so hopefully it'll work perfectly tomorrow when I ride
Thank you for this detailled instruction!!!
Thank you! And thank you for watching!
So simple even a Brompton rider can do it.
I even saw one change a flat once.
😀
Big Thank You From Singapore.! Love you😍
Thank you for watching!
I love the way you anthropomorphise ...'he just goes in finger tight' etc...does it for me.
love your videos, style is so gentle but still really informative. I have learnt a lot and particularly appreciate finding out how to set the sturmy-archer gears they were a mystery to me! thank you.
Well done. What a very clear and useful video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to write a kind comment
Thank you so much for these videos.
Thank you for watching!
Brilliant. Perfect instructions, clear and concise. Thank you 👍
Thanks, very useful demo.
Thank you for watching and for your comment. Really glad it helped!
I have never lubricated the inside of my 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub gear. Should I? How often? The really old hubs had a little oilway down which you could tip 3 in 1 oil if you thought it mattered. I've never had a problem with a hub gear, and my Brompton has been completely trouble free for 6 years - I feel guilty for ignoring it. Thanks for your wonderful RUclips videos.
We think that’s the amazing thing about the Sturmey Hubs. If they are running OK and have not got massively wet (ie submerged) they they are happy left alone. They are packed with grease, so we generally don’t open them unless we need to!
First in 1902 in a sturmey-archer bicycle then in 1948 in the Oldsmobile Inventor of PLANETARY GEAR is Ibn Khalaf al-Muradi in the 11th century in Christian Spain . You can read the Al-Muradi and his Book of Secrets, 11th Century (1001 Inventions)
I found that on my bike put the gear shift in 6 and 2 then check the 1mm length in both 5 and 2 has well I found a difference on my ie 6 and 2 seems to change better but always sect 6/3 to change wheels etc like your video
You guys are life savers I mean it cheers
Thank you for watching - and your kind comment. We are glad if it was of some help - that’s what makes our day
Hi brilliantbikes, thank you for all your videos. They're really helpful. Godbless.
Thank you for your lovely Christmas comment and for watching!
So much better than Brampton’s video!
Thank you. Simple to understand. Give me better understanding on my own brompton bike parts.
Excellent explanation Hannah..!
Thank you and thank you for watching!
Thanks for the great tutorial.
Thanks for the kind comment - and for watching
Thank you for the explanation. I have just been able to make some adjustments and my new 6 speed Brompton is no longer slipping out of gear 1 into gear 2. Very frustrating on hills!
Thanks for watching
Glad we were able to help out
Very good video and all. Thanks for the input!
Thank you for watching, and we’re really glad it was ok for you
Nice video but would have been nice if you covered properly adjusting the cable itself
I think even I might be able to cope with that, Thanks.
Thanks for watching. It really is simple :)
Love your videos!
Thank you! And thank you for watching!
Very nice explanation
Thank you -- clear and direct instructions, with good camera work. One question -- do you calibrate in second gear for both the 3-speed and 6-speed hubs?
Yes you use the same principle for both, thank you for watching!
Solved my panic! thank you
So glad it helped!
Im working on this for the first time ever. My little chain wont unscrew out of the wheel so I have to replace the long cable for the ends of both are different connecting methods. I tried wd40 inside the hub to loosen the little rodnchain thingy out of the wheel.
Just what I needed. Thank you!
So glad it helped and thank you for watching!
I´d like to see you entire bike review
thanks.. remember to slacken the indicator rod off a 1/4 turn ish to align the mini chain to the adjuster .Like the idea of headset bearing change , when I had mine done by evans cycles as I couldn't release a frozen wedge nut they accidently on reassembly put the control cables to the wrong side of the stem .Easy done?! no fold and torn outers result. You could show us all how its done . P.S.total refund and job fix obtained
Thanks. Really helpful.
Really really glad you found it useful. Thank you for watching and for the comment
This is a great video! Thank you very much!
Thank for watching and your extremely kind comment
It made our day
I was in 2nd gear during my town ride home 17klm and couldnt get 3rd gear until i read this and now its sorted the whole thing had seperated so i tightened it as much as i could ,should the bike be in a certain gear when im putting it away .? Thank you so much youve saved the day ❤.love your topics very useful .
Thank you! So glad it sorted your bike out!
Great video - thanks!
Thank you for watching and for you kind feedback
Thanks. Super helpful ❤
So glad it helped and thank you for watching!
very useful and really worked
Very clear instructions. Thanks
Great video on the three speed gear change process. Can you please make a video on the +/- left hand gear shifter. For the second time this has ceased to work on my Brompton and adjustment is not obvious. Thanks!
Great vid that explains the 3 gear hub. However the -/+ gear slips and at present won’t shift into +. Can you add a vid to explain how that gear changer can be adjusted?
Magnifico vídeo muchas gracias he aprendido mucho. Saludos 👍🏻
Great video! I took my week-old 6 speed c line into the bike shop to have some minor adjustments and the gearing went to pot afterwards - I wonder if a dodgy mechanic was trying to create work for them?! Anyway, it wouldn't shift to #3 on the hub gears. I followed your video and now it does! One question, is the gear indicator chain supposed to be pretty slack when in 3rd? It feels 'wrong' but seems to work OK
Many thanks for the question and for asking. Yes it is meant to be slightly slack. 😀
