“Please ask permission from your significant other when cleaning bike parts in the sink” - this could be the single most important tip from the video LOL
Your videos are easily the best there are for maintaining a Brompton. I am a complete bike novice, but you always explain things so well that I feel confident trying to adjust/mend things myself! Thank you.
Thank you! I was sooo stuck! I couldn't figure out why my bike wasn't changing gears.... Just watching your explainer made it all clear. I recently fixed a flat tire, and seem to have over-tightened the bolt. So tight in fact that the jockey wheel had no room to move. It was just a matter of un-tightening it. Not what you mentioned here, but without watching your video I wouldn't have figured it out. Thank you from Mexico.
Thank you so much for your videos. Today I changed the back tyre of my brompton. Without your instructions I am afraid I wouldn’t have succeeded. ❤🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for another excellent video, this one on how to fix the shifting issue to high gear. This is the second one after my penta-clip exploded & you showed how to reassemble it. Recently my bike wouldn’t shift to the high speed gear (small sprocket).😢 Following your instructions to remove & clean the chain tensioner I was able to get it back into service. While the tensioner was removed, I noticed that the space between the sprockets was packed with black gunk. I used a combination of degreaser & small screwdriver to dig out this gunk. I actually think that this was the proximate cause of the shifting issue. In the future, I’ll clean this first before any disassembly. After cleaning the sprockets & reinstalling the chain tensioner, I was able to shift to high gear again! Viola! 🎉 Interestingly I was referred to your video after contacting Brompton technical support-I hope you are collecting a referral fee.😊
I really appreciate that you've made the effort to come back and amend the description on this older video to indicate it doesn't apply to the new 4 spd :)
Can you do a dedicated video on replacing the shifter cable and tuning the rear derailleur for the external 2-speed? How to tune the length of the cable with the barrel nut to match the shift points. Thanks
Am totally new to trifolds. This one brilliant educational video had me figure out how a shifter that had no -/+ indicator window changes gears from high to low by just observing the pull of the chain, movement of the derailleur and the sprocket it jumps onto. Thanks a million and please keep it coming! God bless.
Please make a video about replacement of gear and brake cables! How does the new gear shifters differ from the pre 2017 shifters wrt cables replacement?
I really appreciate your videos. Have used your online shop a few times now and will continue to, great that you do so much for Bromptons and Brompton owners. Thank you.
Thank you for this video. It is the only detailed video on how to set up the chain pusher that I have found. You saved me a trip to my local bike shop.
It might be an idea to mention the barrel adjuster. I didn't try adjusting it until after owning a second bike. Tightening the tension in the cable seems to have fixed the poor shifting issue that I had for years. Maybe it's more common knowledge for people that own more conventional bikes, but I wish I knew to adjust it and what it does.
Really useful video. Being more accustomed to traditional bikes, and not having had time to take my Brompton to bits, I always assumed it changed gear by witchcraft. Interesting to see how the unconventional derailleur works, thank you.
Thank you so much for this - whenever I have problems with the derailleur I can never remember/figure out which way to adjust the screws to get the desired effect. I’ll be referring back to this next time!
The way I remember is this: 1. The Allen screw further away from the rear wheel axle is for the higher gear (high=far) 2. The Allen screw nearer to the rear wheel axle is for the lower gear (low=near) 3. Loosen screw to close gap between wing and idler wheel (the wing that's supposed to be almost touching), tighten to widen gap (I have this last point noted in my Brompton Manual as it is the easiest one to forget)
Thank you very much for this video. I have had my Brompton for over two years--but how to adjust the gear-cable-indicator chain has never really sunk in. Your clear explanation saved the day. It saved me from going to the Brompton shop (quite far away) and spending money for something I could do myself--thanks to your mentoring. Thanks again!
again, thank you very much for sharing all these knowledge with us. your channel is extremely helpful, I was traveling alone earlier this month, and your videos helped me to perform self maintenance when my Brompton malfunctioned!
Again, thank you for watching And thanks for the kind comments We are really happy that we were of some help - letting us know that really made our day
Don't own a Brommie, but I didn't realize that the 2spd versions had actual derailleurs instead of internal hubs! Pretty neat miniaturization of the bigger derailleur systems
I just put a new chain on the Brompton ... the bike has done about 3,500 miles. Did not change the rear sprockets. BIG MISTAKE. The new chain kept pinging off the smaller of the rear sprockets; I couldn't do anything about it. Had to refit the old chain, in the end. Have now ordered new sprockets from you. Live and learn.
Thanks for the great feedback It would be our number one tip - if changing the sprocket change the chain, if changing the chain change the sprocket We often describe them like a comfortable married old couple - they get used to the way each other work!
@@brilliantbikes The spares arrived promptly ... and the new sprockets have completely cured all the problems I was experiencing with the gear-change. The included nitrile gloves were a nice touch, and very 'handy'. Thanks.
Really useful, I have had brompton’s for 10 years and as far as the derailleur is concerned cleanliness is all important. My daily route includes 3 miles of old railway track each way and in winter weather I have to clean this regularly, the brompton videos can be useful to. Today replaced my chain and sprockets after 6 months all supplied by Brilliant ~Bikes who I have shopped with for 10 years.
Thanks for watching Thank you for your kind feedback too Finally - thanks for the great info for other users. It’s our number one tip - keep it clean :-)
When I had bougth my new Brompton (H6LX) in 2019 I took it in my cellar and gave it an autopolish all over, to protect its paint. By that I saw that - even after only two folds, the "small clear tape" from the Factory had been worn through to the paint, So I immediately ordered a set of carbon plates for all the known week spots on a Brompton. So today I haven't got any "Brompton Scratches" on my frame, as to clearly be seen here! 😄
This video is gold! You saved me from having to be the doofus that has to go to the bike shop, where they'll charge me $50 just to adjust a couple screws. 😊
One tip: if you could zoom in on the parts as you adjust - I couldn’t see the daylight you referred to…. Great video, 👍I’m familiar with other types of gears but Bromptons is different.
@@brilliantbikes I didn't know what I didn't know, ie that the 'dogleg' could be adjusted! I also don't know why it became tight? A good lesson learned for this fan and rider of Bromptons.

Great Video, I have a Brompton Electric. I have just had this problem and couldn’t work out how to adjust the derailleur thanks for the detailed maintenance I have just subscribed
Hi. Always awesome. Q: My brompton chain makes a little clicker clack as the earlier part of your video your chain made. I notice in the post posher adjustment your chain no longer makes that sound. I’d like to seat my chain on the sprockets so that it doesn’t make the sound. It used to not. Started after I swapped tires and tubes with shealbe marathon plus. I was thinking many it’s my gear change chain in the 3 speed hub. TIA 🙏🏻
Ur video is perfect as always! I still couldn’t figure out the issue with my derailleur adjustment .. it’s stuck in the large sprocket ... will try again and see if I can get it right
Really helpful video. I had similar issue, followed all of the steps but it didn’t improve. Eventually I changed the chain pusher for a new one, there was some wear on the inner channel which I suspect was contributing to the issue. Resolved straight away. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to tackle this job without your video. Thanks.
Acabo de encontrar tu canal, es muy interesante y muy útil para mi porque tengo una Brompton de 6 velocidades, estoy emocionado de tener una bici de este tipo. Eres una linda mujer. Saludos desde Puebla, México.
Spent a good 20 mins trying to adjust mine with no luck. Then noticed the housing for the bar/spring was moving about, maybe weakend or something. Anyway, cable tied it to the chainstay and it works fine now. British engineering at its best, no wonder we don't have a car industry now.
I just purchased the 6 speed version and I was wondering if the rear wheel suppose to be perfectly centered on the frame? Looking at mine it isn't hitting anything but the wheel isn't perfectly centered. Thanks to your informative video, my gears are now shifting perfectly.
Great video. Very helpful. I've only done the first one and a half steps so far (which is normally weekly regime anyway) as was going to be too late for work, but reckon cleaning more winter crap out is going to get it going for me. I've been a bit negligent the last couple weeks. But really well reasoned steps to sorting, before starting to try and adjust, but thanks for explaining that too. Reckon I wont need after doing the next half step! ;-)
Hi, thanks for all the information shared, I manage to clean the jockey and and adjust the limit screw . it works better now and my better half okay with the sink usage. lol . great video
Hi…. Absolutely great video and it really encouraged me to try and do a proper job sorting my gears out the first time round rather than trying to do a quick bodge! HOWEVER! Amy gears still don't work properly….. I can change from high to low gear but I get no click that holds my gear shift in place….it just pushes right the way back to high gear again… any idea what could be going wrong!
Tensioner cleaned (in the part washer, not the sink!) chain pusher removed, cleaned, lubed and replaced, and dog leg bolt loosened a little to promote movement... and it's still struggling. I wondered if it was struggling because it's been stored with it in '-' position, causing the spring to loose some of it's strength? Ever heard of that happening?
Thank you. This is really helpful and so well explained and presented. My wife has a new sparkly Purple Brommie which she has named " Jennifer ". There were intermittent problems with the derailleur. When we took it in to the LBS for its post sale 3 Month check up the technician found out that the gear shifter mechanism on the handlebars was binding internally from time to time. Apparently it is not uncommon with the new style shifters. A bit of wet and dry and some lubrication and it is working as it should. As an aside, I'm finding this series of Video's extremely helpful and informative. From the feedback I can see that I'm one of many so I wondered if you have considered running a Brompton specific maintenance workshop day/ weekend? There may well be an unmet demand, especially if a Pub was involved at some stage :-)
Thanks for watching We hope that your wife enjoys her adventures with Jennifer Next Friday - 6th Dec 2019 - we have our village Christmas ‘extravaganza’ Based on your feedback we are going to try a workshop for wheel removal / installation on a Brompton to see how that works out (even if no - one attends, as a practice at least) If you are able to get to CHOBHAM - come and say hello - we have good local village pubs!
Hi ! Thanks for you explanations. Didnt you inverted low gear and high gear in your explanations ? When you "Switch to low Gear" according to you AT 5:51 we see the chain tensioner goes down, wich mean more tension, therefore bigger gear and then HIGH gear right ?
one other issue i have found is that the housing for the shifter (new style) on the handlebar can create issues if its casing screws are done up too tight. It seems to limit the free movement of the shift lever, so if still stuck, i recommend trying just ever so slightly loosening those to see if it helps?
plis give a clear picture or video about connection and instalation of Cable Anchorage and Chain Pusher, i wanna assembly but i dont know how the wiring and connection. because this part is fully disassembly from the market. tks a lot!!
Thanks for watching / commenting again Yes - they are tough nylon, but do wear out (especially when dirty as it makes a nice grinding paste) Maybe we should make a "how to change your jockey wheels" - a nice easy one (as you said)
Thanks. Need to try those, bur was wondering if prob could be spring losing tension over time? My Brompt is 15+ yrs old and its still the original springs assembly. Worth a try?
The chain tensioner was there anyway, as a central feature of the fold function, so they just added the simple pusher and gave the jockey wheels float. A conventional derailleur is probably heavier and has less ground clearance. Also, when removing the wheel, the Brompton derailleur/tensioner is simply removed and safely out of the way.
What if was the wire that connects the dogleg to the hi/low gear shiftier, that snapped off. Could you show how to attach a new wire from hi/low gear shifter to the dogleg?
Hi, do you have a suggestion for when the jockey still won't push the chain into high gear? (the smallest sprocket on my 2-speed) My problem remained after cleaning everything and the checking all the other tips in this video. It seems the spring is just to week.

one other issue i have found is that the housing for the shifter (new style) on the handlebar can create issues if its casing screws are done up too tight. It seems to limit the free movement of the shift lever, so if still stuck, i recommend trying just ever so slightly loosening those to see if it helps?
Brilliant, as your Channel name👍🏼
Thank you so much, and thank you for watching!
Great video as always :) However after following the steps, my issue actually turned out to be cable tension.
plis give a clear picture or video about connection and instalation of Cable Anchorage and Chain Pusher, i wanna assembly but i dont know how the wiring and connection. because this part is fully disassembly from the market. tks a lot!!
Do you have a video showing how to remove/replace the gear cable to the Derailleur?
My jockey wheels wore out so I bought a whole new chain tensioner. Very easy to install and inexpensive.
Thanks for watching / commenting again
Yes - they are tough nylon, but do wear out (especially when dirty as it makes a nice grinding paste)
Maybe we should make a "how to change your jockey wheels" - a nice easy one (as you said)
brilliantbikes you’re welcome and thank you for the great videos. And I think that making a video on how to change it would be great!
Thanks. Need to try those, bur was wondering if prob could be spring losing tension over time? My Brompt is 15+ yrs old and its still the original springs assembly. Worth a try?
Can you show us how to install the wiring for the dogleg and rear derailleur for a 6 speed brompton please? e.g. upgrading from 3 speed to 6 Thanks
Thank you for watching
Great idea - we have added this to our ‘to do’ list
@@brilliantbikes Thank you very much looking forward to seeing it...and also subscribed :)
Good video
Thank you so much for watching 😀
Lovely video. The gearing system seems far too complex to me. Why don't they fit a Shimano like everyone else?
The chain tensioner was there anyway, as a central feature of the fold function, so they just added the simple pusher and gave the jockey wheels float.
A conventional derailleur is probably heavier and has less ground clearance. Also, when removing the wheel, the Brompton derailleur/tensioner is simply removed and safely out of the way.
Cleaning bike parts in a nice kitchen sink with a natural degreaser actually cleans the sink very well.
Were can we get electric kits for my brompton?and why is there no better design for the battery. Being on front of bike. That i use to carry bag.?
