would it be possible to cover name you want in vinyl and if the entire rest of the cup into the solution of vinegar that's all for that has a charge leaving the name Shinee
I'm wondering if this would work better with sodium carbonate? (Not baking soda which is sodium bicarbonate) Arm & Hammer Super washing soda is pure sodium carbonate.
ok, so you are my new favorite channel! A Gamecock too! I just subscribed and am trying to decide if I'll do the swirl dip or the etching on my yeti knock off.
Maybe try both. 1st take painters tape, and mask off an area doesn't matter if its an oval, square, rectangle whatever works for you. Then do the swirl dip let dry next remove the tape"very carefully" then apply stencil, and do the etching also maybe clear coat for longer lasting effect. I think both would be very unique
I have a question, I want to etch a name into a sword I have. it's 1095 high carbon steel, my only question is when I Polish it, will the etching go away, as polishing also involves removing material. I just don't want to spend the time and money etching it if polishing it gets rid of it.
I tried it and left , some type of bumps, circles what do you think went wrong? And some places more white than others. Help need to etch around 50 cups .
I agree with the other cat, I need to see how you did the lettering. Damn fine work. Would it be agasinst the Craftsman Creed to cover the entire area with cotton material then apply current?
Gentlemen's Edge you can try it. Not sure it would work. The vinyl is cut using a silhouette machine doing. My daughter is a designer she made the sticker. There are lots of places you can order them.
You've got to love (I'm assuming) the wife asking for elaboration from off-camera. That's why they're the better half: they think of all the things we forget.
I did this on some knives and found that sand blasting was faster. I liked the darker color i got with A/C (but don't remember for sure if it was ac or dc).
DC does the etching (actual metal removal) AC will darken the metal. You can use an old style power cube and get both 12v dc and 12v ac and make a very usable etching device.
This is a great video. (advisement question for a novice) I wanted to know would etching low or mild carbon still etch with this method work (I don't know anyone to ask). Also would using painters tap (silhouette image on it) yield similar results on different metals. I hate buying gifts for people (impersonal and cheesy in some cases) some of my friends and family would love something half as elegant as your works of art.
I know you made this video some time ago, but I am wondering if this method of etching will work with a tumbler that has been spray painted and will I need to or can I top coat or epoxy the tumbler after it has been etched with any method?
I'm still active here. I'm working on a few things and I'll hopefully be posting a lot.. To your question. No, It will have to be bare metal. You coat after the etching. Hope this helps.
Hi Keith, First off, thank you for sharing. Second, I can't seem to get this to work. It seems as though the metal is coming out of my pliers and not my cup. Any suggestions? We even upped it from 6v to 12v. Nothing.
Looks nice. As always, the real work is in all the masking and cutting of the stencil, done enough airbrush work to know that. Where do you find the self stick vinyl?
It's not covered in stainless steel, it is stainless steel. Just like a soda can is aluminum all the way through. This is stainless steel all the way through.
Tried this technique on a Yeti. The result was very faint/light. What did I do wrong? I used a brand new 6V battery, salt water, ect. Any insights? Thank you
+Keith Chism 9v ac plug pack plugged in to power point on wall, australia uses 240 volts ac but plugpack converts 240v to 9volts would get more consisent results as power wont run out, would white vinegar work better that salted water?,vinegar is acidic right?
Nancy Watson , hey Nancy jou really shouldn't be trying this with a Sasquatch. start with something small like a poodle or a cat.thank you for your questions.😃
Nancy Watson No, the effectiveness is determined by the vacuum between the inside and outside walls of the yeti thermos. Etching the surface will have zero impact unless you somehow managed to puncture the metal.
Neat video. I'm going to have to look at some more of your videos to see the process for how you cut out the lettering. Thanks for sharing! Mike
Michael D Kernan vinyl cutter , silouette 3 or cricket cutter, or Titan from US Cutter
What a fantastic video! Great detail in explanation. Love the innovation here!
Great presentation.. like how you took your time to explain the process. And it came out cool as hell.
Thank you for the video. I have a silhouette so definitely need to try this!
Amazing! Great detail too.
thanks for the video! you explained this wonderfully!
Thanks,
I’m gonna have to give this a try,
Would be a cool way to personalize gifts!
would it be possible to cover name you want in vinyl and if the entire rest of the cup into the solution of vinegar that's all for that has a charge leaving the name Shinee
Michael Chase Late response but it's possible. Just need to make sure the vinyl stays completely stuck to the cup when you immerse it.
I haven't tried it but I don't see why it wouldn't. Brass is a much softer material. I'll try it this weekend.
And?
I'm wondering if this would work better with sodium carbonate? (Not baking soda which is sodium bicarbonate) Arm & Hammer Super washing soda is pure sodium carbonate.
Wow! That looks amazing
That's pretty cool, I'm going 2have 2try that. &Good job on that YETI cup by the way too, came out pretty dam good
looks nice thanks for sharing good job :)
Wow incredible printed technique... hey great job man..
you might be able to do the same thing with a heat tint remover machine. I use one at work to take the color out of stainless welds.
interesting.
Wow great Job!!!
This is amazing, I was able to etch a custom lightsaber handle to make a movie prop.
How did it come out? The hilt I mean.
Dude this is amazing. I love you now lol.
very cool, thank you for the tutorial !
Where did you have your vinyl stencil made?
Only real makers wipe etched metal on their shirt.
Great video!
That's really cool. nicely done.
Where do I get the printable blue sticker paper you have? Etching sticky paper?
very awesome video!
You rock, Captain Awesome!
This video has just inspired me thanksssssss
That. Is... SO COOL! And completely affordable!
Noticed the wires are diff. Which 2 wires (names would I get from the hardware store)? Thanks
Can you also use the glass etching liquid?
Awesome video! Do you know if this same process would work for any metal? I'm thinking gun barrels or slides.
I know it will work on knives. Should work on barrels too. BE careful of rust.
This is great, thanks! Was there any discolouration where the positive lead was attached?
nope
That's so cool!!!
ok, so you are my new favorite channel! A Gamecock too! I just subscribed and am trying to decide if I'll do the swirl dip or the etching on my yeti knock off.
The dip could wear off the etching is perm.

That battery lasted about 10 cups.
Keith Chism try with power suppli
thats cool Keith
Keith Chism I

It would probably be removed if you polished it.. I would try and polish before.
Would this work with polished iron?
that's really cool man!
I tried it and left , some type of bumps, circles what do you think went wrong? And some places more white than others.
Help need to etch around 50 cups .
Extraordinarily well done!
Thank you
if i wanted it more solid do i just hold it on longer or pass over the design then let it dry and do it again?
Yes, Exactly
Do you think you could use some sort of dye ie Rit dye and color the etched part? Nice work.
I don't know. I have thought about it. The cup is stainless so don't know that a dye would work.
Dope Mate...♥
Exactly 1 year now and this was a suggestion to me.
Any tips for removing what almost looks like burnt area in the etching?
just dab with tissue or q tip if it's fine detail
I agree with the other cat, I need to see how you did the lettering. Damn fine work. Would it be agasinst the Craftsman Creed to cover the entire area with cotton material then apply current?

My step-daughter.... She is as amazing a her mother.
Would this technique work on White (or any colored) Stainless Steel Tumblers??
Jacqueline Gomez no it has to be bare metal.
great idea
Have you done a stencil video?
Thanks Keith, I learned something new today
Glad I could help. I had a friend ask yesterday if I would start doing videos on my woodworking . I may start a somewhat regular post
What is the difference to use salt water or vinegard ?
This Is amazing. I wander if color can be added like on glass. Has anyone tried it?
Could this work with carbon steel?
Very cool. Thank you.
Very cool to watch how this is done
Where do I get the stencils sticker?
I did this on some knives and found that sand blasting was faster. I liked the darker color i got with A/C (but don't remember for sure if it was ac or dc).
A/C would hurt. Yes blasting is faster, but a battery and some salt water is easy to obtain.
DC does the etching (actual metal removal) AC will darken the metal. You can use an old style power cube and get both 12v dc and 12v ac and make a very usable etching device.

Jason Duncan I've not tried it. In theory it should. If I get some time today I'll try it.
That would be outstanding. once I get my shop finished I will run some test as well. Thank you again for the video.
Jason Duncan I etch high carbon steel with this method. Works great.
Lanny Sutton Thank you very much. I plan on setting up some test to be done probably mid Feb (current projects are a bit time consuming.
is it possible to have a reverse out stencil and cover the entire cup and just dip in salt water and vinegar that has a charge applied do the liquid
Michael Chase in theory it would work. But any where water touched it would etch. I've seen people use nail polish to insulate.
That is awesome
What type of wiring is that?
Show us how to make the vinyl stencil?? How did you cut out the letters so precisely?
It is done with a silhouette machine. It is a vinyl cutter much like a cricket. IT looks like a small printer.
Very nice!!
Can I do this with all metals?
Great video, I'm just curious about your templates/stencils you used. How did you create those?
silhouette machine
@@keith776 did you make a video for that too?
Will this process work on the color coated stainless steel cups?
Luetta Davis no. Bare metal.
I know you made this video some time ago, but I am wondering if this method of etching will work with a tumbler that has been spray painted and will I need to or can I top coat or epoxy the tumbler after it has been etched with any method?

Thank you for replying back. I look forward to your video posts. Again thank you!!!
can I do this on my Rtic cup? I'm pretty sure theyre made of the same metal as the yeti cups
Yes
Very nice
what raw materials are used?
Cool! The most impressive part of the video and my question is how did you cut the letters out on the Vinyl?
We have a silhouette automated cutter.
How much do you charge for the lettering? I have a few cups I would love to do the letters like that on.
My daughter dose the letters. There are lost of people on etsy that do them.
I found someone local that has a machine who can do it for me. Thanks.
cool work
how did you make the stencil? Masking tape will do?
silhouette machine
Could you create a small screen or something and lay it over the image?
Sorry if this was asked earlier, but if I do this to a black cup would it still work?
no, unpainted metal only
Doing the etching seems to be the easy part, getting a stencil to look that good is beyond me.
Emily Dill my daughter cut itnonna silloutett machine.
Hi Keith,
First off, thank you for sharing.
Second, I can't seem to get this to work. It seems as though the metal is coming out of my pliers and not my cup. Any suggestions? We even upped it from 6v to 12v. Nothing.
aramosguy81 try more salt.
Keith Chism thank you!
Wow thanks for the tutorial
nice!
Looks nice. As always, the real work is in all the masking and cutting of the stencil, done enough airbrush work to know that. Where do you find the self stick vinyl?
Andork Kuomo this vinyl was done using silhouette machine. The sheets were purchased on amazon
Andork Kuomo if you can find wide roll electrical tape that would probably be good too.
With doing this method of etching or really any kind of etching it's taking off some the surface does that make it able to rust now??
This is stainless steel. It won't rust. Carbon steel will but it will rust with out etching.
Have you had any battery problems while you were doing this? How long does the battery last?
not really.. About ten cups
Would 12volt car battery work better or does a higher voltage battery just make the process faster?
You can use 12 volt. Be careful of the amps that it puts out. I've used a 12 battery charger set to low amps.
Keith Chism why, aren’t more amps better? Or would it just be faster?
will this method work on a black coated tumbler?
Deryl Clark no it has to be bare metal.
Would this work on my harbor freight impact sockets?
I don't think so. I think they are coated. If they are bare metal it should work.
question? taking off the stainless, wouldn't that make it rust? or rust when water contacts it.
Thank you
Leba you just didn't leave it long enough or you didn't have enough salt. It takes about 20-30 min to do one the size of the one in the video
thanks I am trying this on my Yeti Cup today
Is the mug stainless steel? Hoping to etch a flask for my husband. Hoping to be able to diy it thanks!
Vivian L yes it is sainless. You should be able to do a flask with no problem
@@keith776 thank you!!!
+keith chism would this work ok with a 9 volt ac plug pack?.
Yes but the charge wouldn't last long.
+Keith Chism 9v ac plug pack plugged in to power point on wall, australia uses 240 volts ac but plugpack converts 240v to 9volts would get more consisent results as power wont run out, would white vinegar work better that salted water?,vinegar is acidic right?
+neil froggy crompton you might get better results. I haven't tried it.
very well done video
Will this process work on any kind of metal, Brass etc.?
It should.
Does it leave etch mark where other lead was taped?
no
Would a rechargeable 12volt be acceptable or is that too strong (shock risk?)
sure. I've used a battery charger
Would this work on BRASS?!?
Yes
Nice Vid... Where do you get the stencils?
I made them
Can this be done on silver and bronze metal clay?
I don't know. I have only tried it one stainless steel
I’m having a problem with certain stainless steel cups where doesn’t seem to burn through or it’s not coming out even
It's the production of the steel
AWESOME! LETS GO!
Do you know if this affects the effectiveness of the Yeti at all by removing some of the outer wall?
Nancy Watson , hey Nancy jou really shouldn't be trying this with a Sasquatch. start with something small like a poodle or a cat.thank you for your questions.😃
Nancy Watson
No, the effectiveness is determined by the vacuum between the inside and outside walls of the yeti thermos. Etching the surface will have zero impact unless you somehow managed to puncture the metal.
You're only affecting less than a tenth of a thousandth of an inch, you're barely going beyond a molecular level.
It gets a FINE line, which that was. Not finite (the opposite of infinite.), which that line was not, since it looped around.
RoccosPlace1 I noticed that too.
