  • Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been.
You've been in the pipeline, filling in time,
provided with toys and Scouting for Boys.
You bought a guitar to punish your ma,
And you didn't like school, and you know you're nobody's fool,
    So welcome to the machine.
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
What did you dream? It's alright we told you what to dream.
You dreamed of a big star, he played a mean guitar,
He always ate in the Steak Bar. He loved to drive in his Jaguar.
    So welcome to the machine.

The Machine- There is no one correct answer, One i can comprehend from this song is the Machine is labor force, skipped school and now he's working, working until the day he dies. Machine as a cycle- It will never stop- Dragging in young and fertile and spiting out old and weak. 'Dreamed of a big star' Means different dreams that could have been achieved, But victimized to middle class work.

PF are legendary artists in each member and as a whole. This particular piece i think is one that as all of their efforts of universal language telling of mankinds disillusionment of success as part of what man has conditioned us to forsee as success. Past and future are linked unbreakable. Realization of this is painless in a higher state or just listen to pINK fLOYD

For me it's music about how unoriginal we are, most of us dream os same things, think the same way, it like a joke "when you decide to leave the group of normal people and become diferent, you just enter another group of people who don't want to be like other". We are all diferent, but at the end, we are all the same.

When I was a young boy in the late 1970s the Earth was so beautiful and magical, just waiting to be explored. Then useless control - driven bible - toters tried to tell me it wasn't by trying to convince me the Earth is a very dark place and the only chance I had to get out was some guy that never existed to save me. I never listened to them. I saw how bible - toters were totally Miserable creatures full of Apathy via their needless and useless need of their Ego to ' Control' others.Years later in Ayahuasca ceremonies, Mother Aya showed me all the reasons why that is. "If it's not Shamanic, it's not Spiritually Organic." .. Period. Thank. You Mother Ayahuasca, infinite endless Gratitude !! Infinite Joy !! Nature is my church, and Rock N' Roll and Heavy Metal music (and a touch of psychedelic trance) is my religion ! And thank - you Pink Floyd !! ; -)

My interpretation is that the machine is the advancement of technology. It is at the point (in the song) that it has grown powerful enough that it has taken control of the government and is hounding on and eliminating innocent or "harmful" people. It is relentless for power.

The song describes the band's disillusionment with the music industry as a money-making machine rather than a forum of artistic expression. The plot centers around an aspiring musician getting signed by a seedy executive to the music industry, "The Machine". The voice predicts all the boy's seemingly rebellious ideas The boy's illusions of personal identity are further crushed with lines such as, "What did you dream, it's alright we told you what to dream".

And PF copied it from 70's synth pioneers. Don't get me wrong, I don't like dubstep, but it's not like PF invented LFO effects, they are and were very common.
