As a high-volume seller with hundreds of thousands of units in sales, Chris Raydog shares his exact, no filter results and strategies for launching profitable products through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.
I know, this is a long video, it's not what you want to hear - but it is what works. I promise. You are wasting so much time with worthless pursuits with your Amazon KDP business. Might delete this video, I know it's not what people wanna hear...
Ok so in today's video I take a VERRRRY long look at my overall approach to KDP and publishing. This is NOT your typical KDP beginners guide where I show you how to create an account etc etc - what this is, it's everything they don't tell you to focus on with publishing. I know it's a long video but I truly believe it will save you a lot of time and headaches with KDP.
There is a reason you aren't making sales with your low content books, and it's NOT your fault! You've been mislead, and now is the time to CHANGE how you approach publishing on KDP.

Let me summarise everything in this comment. I know, it's a long video....
    EXPECTATIONS AND REALITY
    - Is KDP saturated? WHO CARES - change your approach to publishing.
    - Can I earn a full time income with KDP? Yes, but you need more sources of income.
    - RUclips income reports are not realistic. Achievable, not realistic.
    - How long will it take to make sales? I don't know
    - How many books will sell? Not all of them, that is for sure. 20%
    - Can I start with no money? Yes, but you better learn something.
    WHAT BOOKS CAN WE SELL?
Low content books - low chances of making sales, volume needed.
Medium content - Higher chance, my favourite (activity books etc)
High content - Highest chance but it's gonna cost ya.
My approach - A VARIETY is BEST
    WHAT BOOKS DOES CHRIS SELL?
Activity books in all kinds of niches
    Coloring books for seniors
    Short stories
    Picture books
    Cookbooks (kinda)
HOW TO WASTE YOUR TIME WITH KDP
Generic low content books (watch the video)
Following niche videos - niche research is very easy! Do it yourself
Clueless publishing - If you don't know ANYTHING about the niche, learn or leave it.
Premade interiors - Not for me, promotes laziness and dull work
    NICHE RESEARCH
    Are niches important? Yes
How do I find niches for free? I use Amazon, and it's easy.
Can I compete in a niche - too many factors to list, watch the video
    CREATING YOUR LISTING
I don't go there. I talk about the order of importance so you can take your brain off of keywords and all that jazz
HOW TO MAKE YOUR BOOK SELL
Add some value to your book that people haven't seen before.
Tidy up your listing aesthetics! GRAMMAR!
Run ads - get my free ad course
    Use A plus content
You CAN make your low content books sell, but you need to be the FIRST of your kind
Don't fret over reviews, make a good book, reviews will come 100%
Make your next book 5% better than your last book!
    BOOK COVER IMPORTANCE
UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR BOOK COVERS ARE NOT GOOD.
Be in theme with popular books in your niche
Decide if you can design it yourself or if you need to outsource
    GOOD SOFTWARE
CreativeFabrica - BUT NOT THE KDP INTERIORS SECTION
    Hand drawm maze sofrware
    Helium10
    DS AMAZON QUICKVIEW (chrome extension)
    Any listing expander extension
    YOUR BRAIN
    SHOULD YOU RUN ADS?
Get my free ads course from the description, you'll see.
Much love people, feel free to leave questions in your replies here.

Thank you. I watched your entire video. Basically, I been wanting to try and self-publish a book on KDP for many years now. So yesterday, I had a bright idea to create a low content book.I am on day 2 and I am about 50% halfway through my book when I stumbled up on your channel today. Your video has given me courage and a lot of things you mentioned in your video, confirms that I am on the right path. If I can get some sales, it would be amazing. It is a lot of work, but I am hopeful. I can't wait to finish my first book and start the next one. I have so many ideas. I don't know why I waited so long. Thank you so much for the great content!

A lot of what you have said confirms what I found out for myself in the course of my last 9 months of being a self-publisher and I have found that as I move into higher content, well-researched books I am actually starting to make headway. Great video.

I started publishing after losing my 20 year business during COVID. I published over 200 books in 9 months, wasted over 3k on ads and ended up just stopping making books because I was selling 1 to 4 books a day (still am) but never more. I knew I had to make better books and started spending a lot more time at the end, but I had run out of steam. I am encouraged to jump back I'm after watching your video. Thank you very much. That is a very good summary all around the KDP-business. I had a FBA Whitelabel business some years ago and on some parts I had to smile because there is not that much difference to this business. (In fact it is but not at the part with Amazon...) To be successful on Amazon you always need to remember the philosophy of their business. If the customer is not happy, they are not happy. And that will reflect on your sale, your ranking, your business. If you dont respect this or ignore it, there is no chance for making good business on a long run. The quality aspect is not only about personal references - it is also your path to better sustainable business.

This is a very useful video for KDP newbies. I'm not really in the whole "Low content KDP" thing, but when publishing a couple of horror stories on KDP, I obviously ran into the hordes of KDP channels making it sound like a "0 effort, 1000€ per month guaranteed gig". People need to hear the truth more often. So kudos to channels like yours & Sleepy Pilgrim's for keeping it real, and trying to expose the ugly bits about KDP, not just the colorful lies and crappy KDP "Master" Courses wasting people's time and money.

Fantastic video Chris!!! I am just starting my search into creating low content books and using KDP and the information in your video is stellar. Not only is it informative but I felt an honesty from you that isn't often felt when watching other video makers. You weren't trying to sale me something, trying to convince me I could get rich doing this with no skills or that it is effortless, like nearly every other video on this subject is. Man I can't thank you enough for your effort , time, knowledge and most of all your honesty and sincerity! I learned so so much from this and can't wait to keep learning from you . With this video you become not only my go to RUclips channel but my secret weapon lol. I was completely sold on signing up to Book Bolt going into this video because I didn't know exactly how to research all that was included on Book Bolt. Now I know I can find what I need and I know how to find it myself. Taking time to research is not a problem for me because I absolutely love researching so huge plus for me. The other thing that was a complete surprise take away for me is that you outsource your book covers. I just found another avenue for a possible income revenue for myself. Over the last several years I have taught myself graphic design and it is that love of designing the led me to this whole low content book concept to begin with. I am seriously thinking now that perhaps I just sign up on Upwork and create book covers for people such as yourself. I am so excite about the possibility of actually designing for others that I can't see straight lol. THIS IS THE MOST VALUABLE VIDEO I HAVE EVER WATCHED FOR ME PERSONALLY! YOU CHANGED MY WHOLE OUTLOOK AND PROBABLY THE WHOLE DIRECTION I WILL BE TAKING FOR MY GRAPHIC DESING PASSION! THANK YOU JUST ISN'T ENOUGH BUT THANK YOU JUST THE SAME! JUST FABULOUS CHRIS AND I AM SOOOOOO GRATEFUL TO YOU! YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE SO PLEASE DON'T STOP CREATING CONTENT HERE. YOU ARE NEEDED!

I am just starting out in KDP and I am trying to absorb as much info as I can so this was really useful! I started with a couple of notebooks and once there went live I ordered a couple to see what they were like...Nope
The style of paperback just isn't good enough for a notebook or journal in my opinion. I would want something a little more robust that isn't a hardback. There are options but not directly with KDP, so I am now researching the other niches and if there is an option to niche down and/or what the other brands are doing to crush it in the niches they dominate.
People might not want to hear it as you are not saying, "Do this one thing now and you will wake up a millionaire" but this is gold and adding to my research before I go head long into my idea. Proper planning prevents poor performance, thanks Chris

Your content speaks to me in my mother tongue; value and uniqueness are what I've always sought. However, I have just came into KDP and published only 3 books (one low content and two medium), and I tried to be as unique as possible while sticking to trending-ish niches (mother's day). Everyone I know thought the work was great. I ran ads. Not a single sale. What I'm trying to say is I'd like to push your realism even a step further and question the assumption that things might come anywhere near predictable in this field. :-)

As they say - some people treat a feast as crumbs and some people the other way around. This video of yours was really a feast for me ! Thank you again

Another great video that you have created. You're so right, this is the information that the get rich quick post anything on kdp guru's don't tell you. Transparent is the right word you used at the end. Very helpful video. Thank you once again for sharing.

Guess I am too late for the free course LOL but this is an extremely helpful video. I got into kdp a few months ago after watching a few videos on it. I'm ashamed to say my first book had a terrible cover and one page repeated 100 times inside. Now I am working on medium content and up. You really took the time to explain your thinking and I definitely learned something in this two hours. I've liked and subscribed.

Once you get Time Stamp Links into your pinned comment that will help.
As a designer, better use of the basic typography in comments/descriptions will allow the viewer a user friendly experience too.
    Example below:
CAPITAL LETTERS CAN WORK FOR COMMENT/DESCRIPTION TITLES.
    ** 00.12 **
    - No line gaps between titles and bullets points, helps to connect the two. Do include line gaps before titles.
    - Using simple dash bullet point helps the readers' eye gaze. Asterisk and other basic characters work as well.
    - Keep consistent with the pattern you use for characters and spacing, the viewer will feel the visual rhythm and thank you for it.
    - Pinned comments are nice, but I'm sure most people look directly within the description. At the very least, mention of the Pinned Comment in the description.
    Overall, that's for the video!

I love this video. I think too many people want to make quick quick money with little to 0 effort. I see people who have uploaded 10s of notebooks with all different covers. Inside is exact the same. I get the different covers because there are 1000s of notebooks out there from different brands. But they don't make any effort to at least change the inside. I have a few notebooks some are just lines, some have other elements on it to make them stand out.

Chris, your advice is proof of concept for me. I’ve found a micro niche on my own in the guided/meditation world. I’ve got 8 totally unique ones and ideas for continuing. Is it ok to specialize for a bit? Just sold a notebook in hard cover with a fab cover design of my own creation. Slowly progressing after 6 months. Thanks for your incredible work

Also, FWIW, the pre-made KDP interiors (like on Creative Fabrica) are meant only to be a starting point. The creator is meant to elaborate on what is already there, "make it their own", as it were.
