- Hey guys!
Back again with another mod for the 75! This time a rear ELocker from Harrop. I have wanted an ELocker for so many years and finally have the opportunity to install one.
I have run a front mechanical locker for nearly 8 years and now with towing a trailer offroad I have found myself needing a little more help than the facotry Limited Slip Diff rear can offer.
I hope you guys enjoy this video, I look forward to uploading more offroading videos and reviewing the locker as I go!

Been running a Harrop eLocker in the front end of my Hilux for years, it's saved the day so many times.... brilliant piece of engineering.
great to see you and mars back
good to be back!
Hey Danie... My 80 series is in at the mechanics getting an Elocker at present as the ring and pinion gear had a party and decided to crash so I'm getting the Elocker installed at the same time... Great info and it is great to see you back and making content and I love your honest opinion on things as always... I'm just an off road tourer wanting to get into out of the way spots not into crawling or comp stuff so this should help me lots. I have been researching lockers for a few years now and it seems the best low maintenance system, and it just works...
Great content. The fact that you are an actual tradesperson puts you way ahead of a lot of the other channels that can only tell you half the story. Keep up the good work.
Thank you definitely helps having lots of viewpoints online:)
So good to have you back. I used Harrop equipment back in the 1970,s when involved in motor racing and their engineering was first class.
Crazy how long they've been in the industry hey!
As always, respect Danie. Keep up the great work.
Thank you!!
From the beginning I always said that I wanted electric lockers over airlockers but was concerned with the disconnect on direction change but I think this has set my mind at ease. When it comes time for lockers it will definitely be electric for me!
Great to have you back!
Oh that's good to hear!!
So happy to see you back with your open and honest opinions and feedback from someone who knows what they are doing
Happy to be back
Great having you back on my screen thank you 😊👍
Anytime!
@@DanieSimpson 😘
Another awesome vid danie
Love your work. Harrop gear is terrific!
Why thank you:)
Just found your channel and will be watching more vids.
You made a statement about full time mechanical lockers wearing the rear tires down but indicated that they've worked fine in the front. There really isn't any different wear front or back unless I'm missing something. I'm looking at installing the lunchbox lockers in my rig. The piggy bank can't do electric or air lockers at this time. I'm sure there will be some heightened scrubbing of the tires but they're designed to release at some point of differential turning. Please correct my thinking if I'm not seeing something.
You go over the pros and cons from what Ive seen so far. 👍 I look forward to your upcoming videos. And for the folks that insist on that being your dad's truck..... well, you can fill in the blank.
Have a fantastic day!
Yes what I said in the video was correct. The mechanical auto locker that I have cannot be disengaged permanently. Hence when you install them on the rear and drive on hard bitumen surfaces the locker continues to engage and disengage, because your tyres can't 'slip' very effectively on road it ends up just destroying your tyres and very noisy on road. Mine is installed on the front where I can disengage my front Hubs and drive to the front diff on road so the locker isn't 'on'.
Thank you for watching appreciate it!
Welcome back @ dani 😍😍😍🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲 missed yah... was wondering where u went for a moment 🤔😕🙂🙂🙂
E-lockers are definitely better. Love your work Danie 👍
Hi Danie Nice one Thanks
I hope you keep smashing out the post's, it's always great to see your smiling face
thank you!!
So awesome to see you work on your own rig impressed ⛺️👍🏻🇿🇦
Thank you!
You straight forward honesty and your a young lady that gets in there gets greasy but gets it done.glad you are back.
Thank you!
Great Job! Now it's even more of a beast.
Glad you are back missed ya videos
It's been great being back so much support!
Great to see you back! I hope you keep the content coming!
Thank you and yes will do!
Good choice with the elocker. Airlines and o rings can be a nightmare and usually don’t malfunction in the comfort of your driveway. Keep up the good work.
Agreed, slow is more fun and I think it looks more impressive if you just idle up something other people are bouncing up. Plus I can't afford to drive aggressively.
Couldn't agree more! All the 4WDs I idolised were the ones that went up the tracks so slow and controlled
Excellent video Danie !! Thank you for sharing.
yeah good to see you posting again, i enjoyed this vid and thanks for the entertainment
Great video Danie, lots of Awsome info.
Cheers!!
I like the honesty and straight forward talking... goo to see this keep it up...
Thank you appreciate that
Had one of these in my last ute, great quality and loved it
Thanks for helping us down in NSW get through our lockdown . I'm considering a front Harrop for my Navara. It already has a rear factory elocker. You have made it easier to choose.
Anytime! Happy to help!!
And yeah that will be mint!
Yes enjoyed I like the plan and simple way too
Good one Dani
harrop gear is the best on ya danie good videos exellect content
Thank you!!
Awesome vid Danie! Been checking these lockers out for ages, great to hear the improved control when towing up a track (something that always plays on my mind!)🤙
Yes most definitely!
lockers now you have them all going nice ironed shirt hahaha
Bugged me so much editing this video. My grandma would smack me haha
@@DanieSimpson only because we all care haha enjoy mate now wasn’t because of work being crispy iron job👍🍻
Good locker video
It took me a while to choose, and ended up with harrow elockers front and rear, and love them! Way easier to control than oem lockers as they don't drop out unless you switch them off, they have been great...
Yes agreed! Such a good replacement for factory solenoid operated ones
Great work on the locker. I would recommend that the wiring although good needs to be covered with conduit on the exit point from the diff up the breather.
04 GU patrol, TD42t and RE4 auto - the rear LSD (like yours) worrrrrrks.... OK..... But just started looking for a front locker. Like you, again, the harrop draws my attention pretty quickly. Simple, reliable and easy to fix compared to an air set up. Thanks heaps for the little things in between installation stuff! Very valuable! Next things going to be reductions to slow up the auto downhill though!
Yes that's my next mod too!! Very excited!!
@@DanieSimpson are you going to partner with anyone for a discount code on the harrops?
@@andrewcox710 no sorry you'll find alot of bigger companies don't offer things like end of year sales or discounts of they're products. The prices are already well set for the production costs, parts, packaging etc. Usually smaller people who onsell these put such a massive mark up on top of the RRP usually that they can have "sales" but really they're just cutting back on their own profit and the customer isn't actually saving.
Have been thinking of an Elocker to fit to my Suzuki Grand Vitara, you have answered a few questions for me.
That's awesome to hear!
Gday Danie, i really appreciate your honesty with the products you use, everyone has different opinions and preferences, always go with what you like best, awesome video mate, thanks heaps, cheers
That's exactly it hey! No point being dishonest about products and I love sharing the things that go onto my vehicles
Great 2 see ya back Danie. Keep up the great content. QLDer.
Cheers!! Will do
Love your videos.
Thank you!!
Great video Danie. I like the look of the wiring for it, and the lockout switch is a great idea. Can’t wait till I get one for my 80 series.
Yeah I haven't seen that before so I was impressed
Nice awesome
Thanks 🤗
Good thinking about lokka, I had twin Lockrights in my 60Series. Pain in the arse sometimes, and forever spitting hub studs on the rear.
Awesome vid once again Danie. Good to see you back on RUclips and look forward to seeing more of your content
Thank you apprentice that!
Great vid 👍🏻
Thank you!
I love watching your videos ❤️❤️ keep up the great work ❤️🍺🍺🍺🍺
Thank you!
No worries danie ❤️🍺
Nice work. I learnt something. Keep it up.
Oh that's even better!
Not sure if all the elocker ask for the same diff oil but just a heads up I know my locker says to run 75w-90 not the original 80w-90 for the LSD. Probably worth checking out.
Good video for sure.
All elockers say to use the oil that your factory LSD diff takes, so 80w-90 for me
Great job! Love my lockers, one of the best mods hands down! Keep up the great work!
Same here! And thank you
Sweet video and good insite into a E v Air…. For me I have onboard air already, and arb’s linx so thinking air might be the go, but feel the next build will get elockers cause as you rightly pointed out, way less things to go wrong.. Cheers for sharing!! Also hope that Oz gets through the lockdowns soon. All the best from NZ.
Yeah that's it hey all comes down to the individual and they're build set-up. I already have a front Locker and a dedicated compressor for my airbags so to install another compressor just for a front Locker just wouldn't suit
Great vid 👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
Cool. Very interesting video Dani. Thanks for the montash, not being mechanically minded, it's interesting to see how it works. It also confirms the fact of having a good mechanic to work on your car. Oh by the way love your socks.. 😉😉
Cheers Mark...
Why thank you I think you are the first person to comment on my socks;P
We need more girls like you in this world. Not being afraid to get a bit of grease on your hands good job Danie keep it up.
Haha well it is my job 😅
Hi Danie, I have a auto Lokka in the rear and a Elocker in the front of my 80 series. I find the Lokka in the rear great as I don't need to activa it and it works on the run. With the Elocker in the front I can switch it on and off as I need it. I'm a bit jealous of your wiring harness because I didn't get the lockable switch or the waterproof relays (I only installed the wiring last weekend). Anyway great post, love your work.
Thank you! Yeah I couldn't do a rear auto locker in the rear because I drive my car everyday on road and they just accelerate tyre wear because they're still locking and unlocking on road
@@DanieSimpson I contacted Harrop about the switch and loom that you have and they said that yours is an older version and the new looms and switches are different. In my opinion the old type with the safety switch and the waterproof relays are a way better setup.
Great video as I just wired up mine on the weekend.
@@WDMTAdventures do the new looms not have the safety switch?
@@DanieSimpson no, no safety switch and no waterproof relays
@@WDMTAdventures I'll have to suss out who sells those lock out switches
Great vid Danie, thanks for sharing. I reckon everyone's getting a lot of vehicle maintenance done with all these lockdowns.
Yes I think so too! One positive!
Electric/air locker is like Nissan/ Toyota argument. I have had air lockers in my troopy for 15yrs and not one issue. A good Installation is there key I guess, like you pointed out Dani, it is one of those jobs you need to know what you are doing.
Most definitely! That's awesome to hear though, a good install is very key
@@DanieSimpson as you know work shops outside of the defence do not use counter signing for work. And then a lot of people follow RUclips tutorials which 95% of them are not doing it properly and shortcuts are taken.
@@christurner68 oh yes indeed it's quite scary when you see some of the advice being given out on Facebook and forums also
Thank you for the realistic video and truthful talk about everything currently building a 4wd myself and prefer this too videos saying this is great when reality is it's not
This is my daily driven car that I've relied on for many years so very cautious with what I put on it. Especially now as I am getting older and a wiser, cheaper isn't always better
Nice build, did the same with the old landy Salisbury diff, wasn't as easy as that Toyota diff centre, if you look at their site the Salisbury locker was dear as poison and if that wasn't enough l had to fork out for four strengthened axles. 🤤
How fun are project cars hey!
I’ve got harrop front and rear. It makes for safer wheeling. Good choice
Much safer!
I put a torqueline torque lock in the rear of my 100 series just for the reason I don't have to think about turning it on, works awesome on and off road, e-locker would have been my second choice but free certainly would bump it up to first :)
Yeah awesome!! I definitely love that about my front Locker just never have to worry about it not being locked in:)
Another great video from Danie👍, was planning to put rear Elocker on my 105 but I couldn't find shop whom can connect it to factory wiring or at least when I switch the Elocker on, see the light on dash panel. I have to find the way to do it myself.
Yeah would only be someone who was willing to put in the time to figure out all the switching which is a hard thing to charge a customer for. It's why alot of places will just say no
Time to jam some power into the cruiser dani
Nah does the job
That was the reason I went with twin ELockers for my 60 series, daily driver and don't want to run airlines.
Yeah mint!! If my front one ever fails I'll be going an elocker in the front also!
I am the same. Will rather run Elocker than air. As soon as I save couple thousands $$$ I will buy front and rear just because it is better for NOT damaging track and car when 4 wheeling.
Yeah that's it hey and slow and controlled looks so much cooler in my opinion
I am only guessing of course but I suspect that limited slip was well past its prime long ago with the km on the unit, never mind that a rear tire lifted off the ground makes it totally useless even when it was a new vehicle. Would I be right to say that installing this locker and the mechanical front unit are the two best off road worthy drive line mods you have done to this 75 ?
It would have been so tempting to use a fine grit rollock wheel on a die grinder to remove that gasket material, unfortunately its easy to damage even steel and in the process put fine grit into the diff housing. Gasket remover spray and lots of scraping, I've sure done that a few times on parts.
Lsd worked pretty good for its age. Showed very little signs of wear on the clutch packs also. Very rarely lift rear wheels especially with the trailer.
Yes hands down lockers are what I would do first to any 4wd in the future.
@@DanieSimpson That is amazing about the condition of the LSD, if it had been a North American made axle LSD it would have been scrap long ago is my guess. Sure which they made most axle housings over here for pickups etc with the third member design vs having to do the gear swap in the housing under the vehicle and also no option to take another third member and throw it in quick. Highway tractors are like your Toyota, but GM/Ford/Dodge/Jeep have other ideas it seems !.
I'm in it for your dog!!!!
Me too haha
Thats a fancy switch. They send me cheap jay car one with mine, and some cheap wiring
all comes down to who you buy your kit through
Awesome work an harrops are one of the best in the buisness . Had to laugh when i seen ya socks but i understand fully why ya got the little legend on them .
Hehee it feels weird to get my car printed on things and wear them but not my dog haha he probably finds it weird
@@DanieSimpson lol an i bet he goin mum u ok ??? . But when ya not near him ya gotta have something marsy close
@@arnoldhillbillygrizzlyputm1493 most definitely!
Crackin Vid Danie, its really interesting watching the whole hands on aspect of this video, way over my head (not that I'm afraid to admit it) With all the money and time you have invested in the 75, I doubt you'd ever part with it anytime soon. What's next on the list to mod?
definitely not parting ways! will most likely be passed down in the family:)
have to wait and see;)
I've got an auto locker (Lokka) in the front of my 75, I like it. Thinking about a E locker for the rear
yeah I do love my lokka such a cheap upgrade! the elocker hasn't missed a beat
I put an E locker in my car, but only because like you didn’t like the idea of air hoses, and bloody hell doesn’t. locker make a difference.
Haha I don’t have the smarts to install one myself.
I have a jk diesel wrangler jeep twin eatons electric lockers and they have never let me down apart from a loose fuse they are the way to go
Heck yeah that's awesome!!
ur welcome my dear trying to put lockers in my old rig might go harrop but my old rig will be a pain due to ifs front coil rear might to twin locked but don't know yet
Rear locker will definitely make a difference offroad for you:)
My 200 has a central diff lock is this the same thing and does it do the same job. I use it a lot on dirt roads. Great video
No this is a locker. A centre diff just splits drive between front and rear prop shafts, same as what any transfer case achieves. If you lift a wheel you will still lose drive and become stuck without a locker
@@DanieSimpson Thanks Danie bummer it’s not a proper lock.
@@rodmason4320 it is but only to lock front to rear not individual wheels
Maybe the limited slip into the front?
No as said in the video I have a front Locker and have had for many years without issue
@@DanieSimpson oh dear... I'll won't skip parts next time🤔
One of the most impressive parts of this vid was that electric ratchet!! I completed my apprenticeship at the turn of the century and battery equipment was not a thing! Are u going to put a locker in the 60?
I was fine without one until I got one now I can't live without it haha
Yes most definitely!
Would love to see a few more females commenting on your page as you're a bit of a chip off the old block really enjoy the 75 setup
There are alot more males interested in 4wding/mechanics, but definitely more girls in the industries than there was 10+years ago. Just gotta accept not everyone is into this kind of stuff and that's okay:)
Any water in that diff oil when it came out?
Nah siff breathers are nice and high so no water. Just had two different coloured oils in it hence the weird colour
What the go with the 105 series now days
Haven't had a 105 for nearly 3 years
Hi Danie
2007 Prado front & rear air lockers go anywhere thanks for your videos safe travels
A locked diff is a locked diff doesn't matter if it's air, electric, mechanically actuated or welded. All has the same outcome
Hi Danie...I noticed you mentioned a workshop manual....was it hard to find one???....I'm not sure where to look for one for my 76 series....any idea's????..thanks
Yes mine is Gregory's
@@DanieSimpson thanks Danie...:)
12.7 hp love it, will you ever put a turbo on and run on low boost? i knew a mechanic who had a 2.4 hilux and he put a small turbo on it he said it helped it breath better
Nah never. Will get a turbo motor one day but it will be one that was designed to handle a turbo. I'd much rather reliability over a few extra horsepower
@@DanieSimpson yeah i understand that why i put low boost and not high boost lol anyway love ya content mate keep it coming
@@steveb2915 doesn't matter with the 1hz. Have seen them done completely over the top with tens of thousands of dollars spent upgrading the internals and keeping everything sensible and in tune and still let's go. Simply not designed to handle the heat, so will always fail just a matter of when, not if.
@@DanieSimpson yeah well im sure you will find a good turbo engine one day. untill then 12.7 hp it is 😎

Hey Dani what is the name of the song in your intro also awesome video love watching them
Shazaam it:)
Hey Danie, are you still running the standard springs you had re-set with the dobinson remote res shocks or have you changed your set up? If so where did you have them re-set?
Yes same springs that have been in it for nearly 20 years, local place did the hot reset they got bought out unfortunately.
And yes I have dominions remote res adjustables all around
Do you often get grease in your hair? Haha! It must be annoying to clean. I’m a mechanic and I get filthy but I can only imagine it for you haha.
Ha yeah you gotta have good shampoo that's for sure
Shimmed rear lsd and front rear locker is the go/better imo. The lsd provides better onroad traction in wet weather etc, instead of single pegging it especially when towing and pulling out into traffic. Twin locked only for weekend warrior rock hopping slow 4x4ing haha.
Yeah when you are a slow old diesel single pegging it any time isn't really a thing lol I just plod along:)
@@DanieSimpson hahaha thats true! Great setup youve got 👌👍💪
If the driveline is under heavy load or binding, can I change to neutral and then engage the locker?
