With :27 left on the clock, Pat Carrol's 3 pointer gave St. Joseph's a one-point lead. With only :08 left, Josh Lucas erased that lead with a 3 pointer of his own to win the game 64-62. Oklahoma State's win earned them a spot in the Final Four, where the tables turned and they lost by two points to Georgia Tech.

This marked the last time St Joes ever had a chance to win the national championship. That opportunity will never, EVER come again.

I was 7 watching this game with my dad in the living room and when the buzzer sounded we went absolutely crazy. Hope our program can get back to the level it was in the 90s and early 2000s some day. Go pokes

St Joseph's more than proved during their tournament run they deserved that #1 overall seed, finally falling to a quality Oklahoma St team! Cold blooded three by John Lucas under the pressure of the moment! Showed his character! In the end in retrospect though, super job by St Joe's getting there! People were skeptical of them even with just one loss; they proved those detractors wrong! That team will always have it's rightful spot in Hawk and NCAA lore

Lucas went to Baylor then transferred??

Sadly Baylor basketball had a player murdered by another player in 2003 and all other players were able to transfer without penalty. That’s how Lucas ended up at OSU.

OSU deserved the number one seed over St Joe's and nobody can convince me otherwise.

Yeah, ok st. Went 31-4 that year! I was rooting for Saint Joseph and it was a tough finish. But what a great season.

OK State student here, probably the greatest moment of our program in the last 50 years. Sucks we couldn’t win against Tech but making the Final Four (and beating a #1) is an accomplishment of itself.
Do feel bad for St. Joe’s though, they had a dream season and unfortunately we were the ones to end it.

This has to be one of the most entertaining finishes in tourney history. Back-and-forth in the final 1:23 without any fouls or timeouts, and to go to the Final Four above all else.

It was the type of game that you felt sad one of these teams had to lose. This was Final Four caliber.

it's funny hearing "Tony Allen, their leading scorer." knowing how his career went, known [mostly] as an elite defender. lol.
just goes to shows how much of a different animal the pros are.

Great game. I remember i recorded it on a 📼. West and Nelson were beasts as was that whole OKST team. Loved that Nets court, btw. RIP parquet floor.

I was rooting heavy for St Joe's in this game and for a majority of that year. Jameer Nelson and Delonte West were one of the greatest college scoring back courts I had ever seen. They had a special year and only lost 1 game (though going undefeated in regular season play) up until this game. I was especially rooting for them because of the way Billy Packer was hating on them before the tournament started. They were THAT close from getting to a final 4.

Go Pokes! Hope we can get back to the Final 4 soon! Future looks bright, despite the ridiculous sanctions trying to rob us of a postseason with our one year with Cunningham.

Nelson had the defender back pedaling on the last shot and he over dribbled. Smh. Fast forward to 2009 and Derick Fisher drains the 3 in Nelson's face for the championship, that Nelson should've drained to go to the final four. He was back pedaling Nelson. He was giving you the 3

Martelli should have called time and set up a play for either Delonte West or Pat Carroll, both better shooters than Jameer Nelson.
Martelli was a horrible end of game coach. This game was the most disappointing in my life long history of my following St. Joes Basketball. Today, 4/21/2023 was the first time I watched the game in 19 years. It brings back horrible memories.

Sour grapes? OSU was in a tougher conference and was a better team. Hard to argue with 30 wins in one of the best conferences in the nation. St Joe was a nice Cinderella story that one year though.
