That whispering and burning building is a reference to real tapes found of a local arsonist burning down buildings and leaving behind the tapes. Scary shit man
It was the Stockton Arsonists and they actually caught the culprits pretty easily. People identified the house and led the police to them. A 17-year old and a 19-year old, the older guy convinced the younger guy to do this with him because he was mentally unstable. The house was abandoned and no one was hurt. Younger guy was sent to juvie while older guy went to a mental hospital.

I was on my phone when that happened on stream and for some reason it fucking killed me. I was laughing for a solid 5 minutes over it and I was nearly crying. It was so hilarious to me because of how Vinny stopped abruptly I think.
I love the atmosphere in this, but I wish the developer took some time to learn how to craft a narrative out of all of it. It seems like a huge opportunity just wasted on "ooo spooky devil circle" and then "Now we're in a house and there's a jumpscare at the end!"
It depends what you're looking for. I vastly prefer a realistic serial killer ending (obviously inspired by Henry Portrait of a serial killer) than a 'spooky wookie supernatural cult' ending which was sort of a red herring. 'I wish the developer took some time to learn how to craft a narrative out of all of it.' I mean I understood the narrative pretty fine watching the no commentary version. It's obviously a basic story but it works perfectly fine for something that's more of a mood piece than a game. Why are so many vinny fans are so confident their opinion on something is 100% objective fact and the game developer is bad? Plenty of people enjoy puppet combo's more realistic style of slasher horror.
What do you mean? There is a narrative: You play as a deranged killer, who documents one of his murders. First off we see the abandoned house you are squatting in, where you are worshipping the devil. Then you go to the house you've scoped out to kill someone. The ending isn't a jumpscare, it's one of the parts of the tape which has been redacted by the police, where you jump your victim. You then burn the house down and leave her clothes and the tape in a garbage bag. You are establishing the killers modus operandi. It's simple, but I started out thinking it would be a standard "kid tries to explore spooky place and finds ghosts and demons!", but as the last part came up, it clicked. I found it pretty unnerving and effective.
@@Harpotos I mean that there is no attempt from the developer at creating a narrative story, and that the game could be better if they utilized the imagery and pacing they've created to tell one. Nothing in the game shows or tells the player the narrative you offer. That's a bunch of stuff you just invented right now. What element clues you in that you're a killer or that there was indeed a killing or fire? We never see a body. We never see someone pouring gasoline. I guess you could say the fire at the ending was the house being set on fire (like Vinny suggested), or that the scream in the jumpscare was a victim, but those are big stretches. It's just a guy exploring around some spooky imagery.
"How many of you would do this, urban exploration, alone?" As that one chat member said, I'd do it as long as I had some kind of protection. I'm into paranormal hunting despite not believing in the paranormal, so actual living humans are easily a more credible threat than something which I don't believe exists. My other concern would be unstable structures, obviously.
i imagine the air in such places could be quite hazardous, with fungi and asbestos particles everywhere, so i'd want some kind of gas mask or something to protect me from that as well. i don't think humans would be particularly much of a threat [famous last words] but structures collapsing definitely would be something to be careful of

I really liked the feel and aesthetic of this game, could definitely use a plot but it would require a certain level of vagueness/subtlety to properly suit the atmosphere. That being said, the beginning of this game freaked me out a bit... The entire beginning where you're climbing stairs in a tower-like structure, is nearly identical to a recurring nightmare that I used to have when I was a kid. Not just the structure, or the fact that each floor looks the same to the point that it seems like you're looping; the actual details of the room(s) were uncomfortably similar to the tower from my dream. The biggest difference actually is that I was always being chased by something in the dream. That aside, I found the game to be legitimately creepy, and that's not something I can say about too many horror games. It has a very dream-like quality to it and there were times where I could swear it was actual found footage and not a game. One of the few horror games I'm tempted to play myself.
Yea, some of the framing of the angles made me squint a bit at my screen. The filter really does its job well and the texturing may also help in this effect. Hard to say to though since puppet combo doesnt do many high quality texture games but perhaps its the filter making the brain believe that the textures are high quality.

@@yozora7850 The problem with vision for games is that although you may want to create your vision into the video game medium, it will only be effective to a point. The player acts as a filler as their actions of moving forward and running away and experiencing the environments. The player can only entertain themselves for so long in a game that requires almost as much of the player to complete the game experience as the developer to craft the basis to the experience.
After watching Yahtzee's game dev diaries, the thing that he determined makes a game interesting is called the "primary game loop". It's what the player is doing from minute to minute in the game. For example, in a platformer like Super Mario Brothers the primary loop is running and jumping onto platforms. If the primary game loop is fun or addictive, then that is the first step. Then there is the "secondary game loop" which is achieved by doing the primary game loop successfully a certain number of times. For Mario that would be reaching the goal/completing the stage. Then the "tertiary game loop" is basically the premise of the game or the ultimate goal. For Mario that would be rescue Princess Toadstool/defeat King Koopa.
Puppet Combo is a developer that care way too much about graphics/style over substance/gameplay. They can do the VHS/retro game style really well, but at the end of the day, a majority of their games are lackluster tech demos at best and walking sims/basic games at worst, and instead of working with something and improving it, they throw in essentially a small game for a quick little scare and such that'll easily gather in people like Vinesauce for things like October, or anyone into the horror genre with any note to them, which gets them more notice and following, before working on the next small game with essentially the same engine and style, but a bit more tuned. I was cool with it beforehand, during the early releases from them, but lately with some of their games, i am honestly going to say, without any bullshit in my mind, that you can take this and 2 other games they released recently and they all just kinda mesh together because the style is given more of a focus over the gameplay and they all act and feel the exact same every time, with very similar lengths too, which makes every future release more and more disappointing because they just... refuse to make a game with this style and actually WORK with it, making it more of a fully fledged game with alot to offer rather than a small experience with small sections here and there. I understand their audience and why they like this, but if it keeps up this way, then the well will dry up quick and graphic style won't always keep you afloat for long if you have nothing to really showcase with it other than rather lackluster games in concept and content. And before you say it, because i noticed a few in the comments with this, yes, genres like Slashers and certain series like Friday 13th and Halloween are very similar too, usually most of them getting worse as it goes on, but what makes some of those movies work is with the characters, writing and (i have no regrets using this film term here) mise en scene to give every scene weight and substance to it. To give an example of a movie, if it was done by Puppet Combo with how they have released games lately, instead of Alien having half of it about the team and the slow build up and exploration of the creature and the crew slowly getting killed off one by one in frightening ways, the entire movie is just the 2nd half with Ripley slowly going around the entire ship, leading to her escape with the explosion and such, most of the crew already dead and the alien already fully formed from the get go the entire time, but with the addition of a grindhouse filter.
I agree actually and I'm very disappointed they turned out like this. I was digging the whole PSX theme but really it relies on suspense too much, and at times really do feel like walking sims. Just gets so repetitive at times

Kinda cool aesthetic, but the scream near the end is supposedly taken from a call used to train 911 dispatchers, and presented as real, seems really tasteless if you ask me
Literally walk around for 21 minutes then look at a burning house. I know the burning house is inspired by that one video of an arsonist whispering while staring at, well, a house that he caught on fire, which is kind of neat and spooky. But this is the most bland, boring, non frightening horror game on the planet. And if it weren't for Vinny telling the odd story here and there, it would be the most unbearable video/stream ever
Its a matter of perspective. You can find it boring while others will be unnerved at not knowing what will happen. Not knowing what the threat is makes the experience. Not good game-wise but an experience is more than likely not gonna be commonly accepted as good or bad, just maybe interesting.
Games like this are *NO GOOD* That's a legit 911 call and maybe even a death or rape. That's fucked up yo. I don't know how I feel about this one Vinny but I know it's very uncomfortable.
You'll be pleased to hear that the 'Ruth Price 911 Call' isn't confirmed to be legit. I've seen a theory that it was part of a training exercise for new emergency call handlers. There's very little to no evidence anywhere that reports the murder of a "Ruth Price" had even occurred, so we can't be sure it's real. I'm more inclined to believe that it is a fake 911 call.
I sure hope so. The scream sounds legit though. I've heard plenty of these the way she screams is spot on for someone in legit fear for their life. Someone completely defenseless that knows they're about to die. Shit made me have an anxiety attack. had to stop watching the stream.
@@DougsDiggers It sounding legit fortunately does not make it so. I've seen quite a few fake viral videos that look rather convincing, for example. The fact that there's absolutely nothing - no news reports, no police reports - about the murder of an 80-year-old woman called Ruth Price whilst she was on the phone to 911 in her own home during the 1980's leads me to believe it didn't happen. Nobody has yet to confirm that it is real with reliable proof.

I was sick yesterday from stress then I got a stomach bug from that stress then I continuously puked up nothing because I couldn't eat or keep food down, but I tried to stay hydrated Vinny 🥤 (〒﹏〒)
i love this season of spooks
Very similar to the September 1999 game which also had "realistic" environment and VHS filter.
the crust is real.
All puppet combo games are cookie cutter. They need more love put into them and they would be good
@@yozora7850 The problem with vision for games is that although you may want to create your vision into the video game medium, it will only be effective to a point.
@@chadschmaltz9790 Problem is how would you fit a "gameplay loop" into a game like this?
Isnt puppet combo 1 guy?
I bet you feel super tough for targeting a single person.
Ok you try to make a game and we see how great you are
I agree actually and I'm very disappointed they turned out like this. I was digging the whole PSX theme but really it relies on suspense too much, and at times really do feel like walking sims. Just gets so repetitive at times
@@austinperezgk1 Ah the good ol solid defense. You can't criticize food unless you are a professional chef, can't criticize movies unless you are a director or paid critic, can't criticize sport event performance unless you are part of that sport... :^).
Happy, happy Halloween!
Halloween, Halloween
Kind of reminds me of the game Anatomy that Vinny played a few years back
I’ve just found this video. Was this game released separately before the other Puppet Combo game where you collect tapes, this being one of them? Scary Tales Vol 1 I think it was?
Mr. Plinket wants you to play Silent Hill The Room
I desperately want to hear Vinny talk about Preacher more
Love puppetcombo
Hope vinny looks at "The backroom" That game is unsettling as shit and it's not even done.
COMBO
ngl, watching this made me realize how lit it would be if binyot played outlast1 + whistleblower. not much outlast2 as while thats a good game, it doesnt feel like outlast
Hella agree! Outlast was a breath of fresh air when it came out, and the second one, while good, felt like it should have been under a different name
@@moose8846 yeah yeah outlast 2 was like amnesia a machine for pigs. i understand its part of the lore but it felt way too different from the original and didnt feel like it was part of that series.
you need to find that fucking video vin
well that's unfortunate
"How many of you would do this, urban exploration, alone?"
I would during the day time. Then again, I like Gone Home, BK Crispy Tacos, and use Opera.
"I like Gone Home" That's the scariest part
Best time to do it is night. The times I've been have been night and evening
Oh. They used the 911 call of an old woman being killed by a prowler. That's a bit tasteless.
Kinda cool aesthetic, but the scream near the end is supposedly taken from a call used to train 911 dispatchers, and presented as real, seems really tasteless if you ask me
yo does anyone have the original video to the 911 call?
Wasn't cropsey a Staten island thing?
Puppetcombo makes the scariest pixel art games
This isn't pixel wrt, you stoopi
Pokemen396 You can like a statue made from poop, but at the end of the day its still made from poop. This game is a poopy statue
@@Pleasestoptalkingthanks Amazing criticism man, haha poopy funny.
@@Pleasestoptalkingthanks you must like Oney
Hugh Mann Yes, but my criticism still stands. Theres far better ways to frame games like this
Yeah your character whispers "the beast" another name for the devil at the end
I think the most playable game Puppet Combo has is Glass Staircase cause that game is mostly just classic Resident Evil.
Following by what happened on Joel stream, yeah i think vinny would drop that game in about 15 minutes of playtime with that slow movement speed.
Glad Vinny has good commentary, because this game is super boring.
Do you still have that footage available?
LETS GOOO
Games like this are *NO GOOD*
That's a legit 911 call and maybe even a death or rape.
Love how you didn't even really know if it was legit or not but cried like you knew the person, jesus you're weak

hate to be a spoil sport but GOD i wish game developers would realise how disrespectful it is to use actual 911 calls/deaths/literally whatever in their games..
@@jonte3132 ohhh okay. thank god lmao. i know there is a shitty like $10 game out there i cant remember the name of though that uses an Actual Death Call so at this point hearing a real call isnt that insane to me lmfao. still, thanx for the reassurance 👍
"let's use this recorded tragic event for profit"
Why people find the VHS stuff spooky?
Crusty and grimey environments is prime spook aesthetic.
@@chunkytomatosoup1826 I was thinking of the vhs format in itself, that so many find creepy.
George Wilson I believe the low quality makes it hard to differentiate potential danger from just effects in the film.
Can’t wait for 480p to become creepy in like 5 years. I feel really old nowadays, when people say VHS is creepy.

no offense if u think its cool but when on gods green earth is the indie games community gonna do away with the vhs aesthetic completely
Gotta cover the crust with more crust
When it stops being effective
A real 911 call being slapped onto this shit borders on being exploitative. I'd probably be more forgiving if the actual game wasn't such a lazy piece of crap.
People saying that "this game is super boring" probably think you need to always have cheap hollywood jumpscares for it be be considered good lol
The game literally had a cheap Hollywood jumpscare
@@jimjellyjinjamjimbo It hardly felt like a jumpscare. Id say it is but it doesnt have half of the hollywood standard for jumpscares since they would show someone dying or have their face fall in front of the camera.
It couldve been worse so Id say it was no where near a bad jumpscare. Especially since jumpscares dont occur to construct a feeling or have a purpose outside the initial first fright.
you can't shoot a ghost.
