- A playthrough of Spectrum Holobyte's 1994 license-based action-adventure game for the SNES, Star Trek: The Next Generation - Future's Past.
Star Trek: The Next Generation - Future's Past, later released under the name "Echoes from the Past" for the Sega Genesis, is a game that aims to recreate the feel of a Star Trek TV episode. It places you on the bridge of the USS Enterprise alongside Captain Picard and his senior officers as they travel through the Neutral Zone, and the story begins with the Enterprise receiving an SOS from a Vulcan scientist whose worksite is being attacked by the Romulans.
Like Star Trek: 25th Anniversary on the NES ( • Star Trek: 25th Annive... ), the gameplay focuses on interacting with your crewmates on the starship and searching alien worlds with your away team, but this game also tosses space combat into the mix.
From the bridge, you can answer hails from other vessels, chart your course, sit in on briefings, organize your away teams, read some insanely detailed computer records (seriously, the pedantry on display here is a Trekkie's wet dream!), and repair damaged ship systems.
The ground missions have you exploring various places solving "puzzles" with a four man team of your choosing. Most of these areas involve blasting through aliens and false walls with phasers, activating switches, and finding random items or people. They start out simple, but they quickly turn into massive labyrinths filled with dead ends - not something that I'm particularly fond of, especially when your characters are constantly getting stuck on edges of the scenery.
All of the favorites are here: Picard, Riker, Worf, Geordi, Dr. Crusher, Troy, and Data are all selectable, and each have their own talents which, in theory, should encourage experimentation. In practice, however, there's no reason to ever pick anyone but the strongest members. (Hint: There's never a good reason to not pick Data!)
When you aren't on an away mission, you'll be warping from place-to-place. At least, you would be if you weren't being relentlessly ambushed for one reason or another. Once the alarms go off, you will find yourself facing off against a random aggressor in a space battle. The idea in these segments is to drain the enemy shields with your phasers and then lob torpedoes at them until they surrender. The shooting sections take their inspiration from Asteroids, but the controls suck. They're sluggish and mushy as though they were intended to give the ship a sense of weight, but the lack of responsiveness does little but to make things frustrating.
Unfortunately, things only get worse from there. If you win the battle, you'll need to make repairs immediately - otherwise, there's a good chance you won't make it back to the nearest supply depot alive. You have to reallocate energy to the damaged systems to repair them, and then watch as a bunch of little red damage indicators slowly tick down.
And when I saw slowly, I'm not exaggerating. The battles are usually quick, but you can easily spend ten minutes or more, in real time, watching those red bars. If you're really lucky, you'll get attacked again as soon as the repairs are finished, so then after another two minute battle, you'll get to sit through yet another exciting ten minutes of repairs. You can read the computer entries while you're doing this, but the repair process isn't entirely automated and you can't monitor its progress outside of Engineering, so it isn't usually worth the effort to constantly juggle menu screens just to stave off a few moments of boredom.
The repair mechanic absolutely destroys the pacing of the game, and for me, it was the final straw. I could've overlooked many of the game's faults and still found some enjoyment in it, but the repair system turns what was an otherwise charming but flawed game into an irredeemable one.
The graphics are nice, the sound is alright, and the game's concept is solid, but there's too much wrong with the gameplay to make it worth your time. It's not complete garbage like Wolverine: Adamantium Rage and Road Riot 4WD were, but there are literally hundreds of titles in the SNES library that I'd recommend ahead of Star Trek: The Next Generation - Future's Past, and that's a shame. I really wanted to like it.

I sorta enjoyed this game? I never beat it, but seeing it again and hearing the music is super cozy and nostalgic.
Oh man, I remember spending hours reading through the ship's computer library!
There is SO many entries in the computer.
This is one of those game I am glad I waited until i was ready. I tried it, but struggled, so i played my other games first. Them i came back, maybe a year later, and tried again. It was soooo worth it. The puzzles were so hard. I remember making notes and maps. Finally beating it felt like beating Bowser for the first time. Such good memories.
I remember playing this and getting blown up in space constantly. I remember the difficulty being brutal
I didn't know you could divert to the Starbase for repairs after the first mission. No wonder I got my ass handed to me by the Romulans lol
It looks and sounds like Star Trek, but the gameplay will leave most people running at maximum warp in the opposite direction.
the intro/theme was epic 🤣
I can only imagine. TNG really wasn't the kind of show that made a good video game anyway. But at least there's no slapping of those Star Trek Badges in this game.
I haaaaaateeeeeed that game, so glad you are doing it. I could never beat it! Thumbs up man!
The Nerd needs to put this game in one of his episodes🤣
@@grandspringdale1564 And other TNG games
I only ever played the Genesis version of this. The funnest thing to do in the game was reading the computer files, sadly.
You don't know the controls for space battles going in, you can accidentally surrender and instantly lose. And yes, that once happened to me.
when all else fails send Data in there... He's expenable and can be repaired
I was too young and had not idea what to do. I used to just set coordinates for random planets and get in fights with Klingon ships. I always thought they were the bad guys of the game but looking back it was probably me randomly flying into restricted zones lol
16:20 Reading that it's easy to see why this game was beyond 6 yr olds.
No redshirts were harmed in the making of this longplay.
I never really liked this game, yet I still owned it and I still played it periodically lol. It was one of those "go to" games when you had NOTHING else left to play. It was a good time filler, that's for sure. I have vivid memories of being at my Grandmother's house for a weekend and playing this game the entire time...strange nostalgia.
I completed this on snes emulator about 20 years ago. And I loved it!!! Impressive for when it was released
I rented this when I was 6 or 7 and had no idea what to do.
X2
My goodness! Such nostalgia!
My combat style only had phasers grazing the Enterprise. There is a practically untouchable loop for battling.
I find the Genesis game to be the better of the two. 1) repairs take a little less time, 2) difficulty is a lot more balanced, and 3) this is the big one, you can actually use diplomacy to avoid combat with other starships, so you're not always stuck fighting.
Those all sound like huge improvements.
In my opinion it also had better music.
@@NintendoComplete whats Deanna troi's role in the this game? does she wear her red suit on the away missions? thats the pic i saw on the back of the game.....
Agreed. It’s been so long I wouldn’t have been able to tell you why but I remember I preferred it on genesis. Probably all the things you just mentioned lol
Why would you want to avoid the ship battles? It's the only thing in this game that is even remotely entertaining.
I really enjoyed this game, played it the whole time i rented it, later bought it for only $10 😃
Rumor has it…That theme song is still playing to this very day
This game was ahead of its time. I loved all the ship based stuff.
If you beat this on Sega Genesis, I'd admire your patience and willpower
I was always suspicious of Doctor T'Lirus. She's a Vulcan but she looks like she's smiling all the time. Not a normal trait for a Vulcan. For an early Game Over, you can shoot her with a phaser in the first level. I guess Starfleet frowns on stunning friends.
I hear a lot of hate for this game. I, personally, loved it. I loved the detail that went into the combat and computer systems, I liked the plot, and I liked that each character had their own advantages and disadvantages. Away team missions were a little weird, but they were still fun. This was the closest I could get at the time to stepping into the TNG world.
What was deanna trois role in the game?
@@suburbcinderella Unfortunately it didn't amount to much in this game, except for some occasional insight from the bridge. Once "A Final Unity" came out on PC, it became my new favorite TNG game. ;-) Troi had more of a peerage with the other characters in that game.
Data literally had no disadvantages whatsoever. You can solo the entire game with him -- in fact, it's what's recommended.
@@suburbcinderella If memory serves, She comforts Picard when one of his senior officers gets seriously injured on an away mission, and is removed from duty. It was only a still picture, with a caption. Picard scraps the mission and the game ends if this happens.
I have only ever played the Genesis version of this game, and it has been over 20 years since I have played it. Yes, I did beat this game back in the day. I doubt I still could today.
Never could beat this game but I always liked it.
I don’t think Captain Picard, Commander Riker and Data ever went on a away mission together I’m surprised that the game would allow you to leave the enterprise with no one commanding it
this takes place around season 7 (based on the fact that Troi is wearing her standard uniform now) so new Commander Troi would have the Conn if the other three are on a mission, as she now overrides Worf in the command structure
I beat it once only after finding a good walkthrough...... memories! :)
I beat in this game in my Sega genesis days and I want it more
I love this game me being a Trekker and I've never beat it
Rescuing the miners was a pain in the VULCAN ASS!!!
That’s where I got stuck everytime. I used to rent this game from the video section of the grocery store thinking I could progress passed that mission and never did. Downloaded it and played on emulator and still could never get passed it
I'd love to see a live action of worf going at it with that snow monster xD it'd be hilarious
I have both the Genesis and SNES versions of this and while SNES have some great graphics, I have to go with the Genesis version for being more like the show and do not have to worry about losing phaser ammo. Though both are good, I have to pick the Genesis version.
I like the sega genesis save option better and the music sounds better, but I like the briefing room graphics and star charts better for the NES.
It’s so evident they used the same half of Picards face twice at 0:47
You can’t unsee it lol
Indeed! It’s so obvious! Makes Picard look weird LOL
I don’t get why??
Not being able to run or use a 'Bat'leth', is all that kept this game challenging. There is an oval loop in all the space battles that leave the Enterprise invulnerable and allows hit and run double taps (no challenge).
Thus, this already broken game would become shattered, I think my favorite part of this game was reading the computer for like a month before trading it.
I had this game briefly years ago. I prefer the SGEN version "Echoes From The Past" a lot more. Spectrum Holobyte also made my favorite Trek game for the PC ever, "A Final Unity"!
They all have a swagger walk 😆
Every mission took me hours and you're just slicing through them like butter lol.
Took me 25 years to see the end of this game...
I like this game on snes...but i like the Sega genesis version a little more because the phaser doesn't run out on genesis on away missions.
I actually like this one. Will watch later for tips
I remember one time i played this Captain Picard got pissed at me after i blew up a ship trying to hail us lol. "What do you think youre doing!? That ship was hailing us!"
Yeah, unfortunately the game is nowhere near as free-form as it tries to present itself as being.
well it was hailing us and shooting us at the exact same time what do you expect us to do. if the ship wanted to surrender then stop shooting at us
@@edparadis6685 something must have gone wrong
back when the credits only needed to be 40 seconds. Only 6 coders total worked on this game. I don't remember beating it, lol.
Hmm... I'll probably sell my copy of that game then... Never could reach the end of it.
You wouldn't be missing much.
Thanks for posting this , had problems with the second world ...
MEMORIES!!!
This game is WAAAAY too complex than it had any right to be. There’s less gameplay and more time being on the goddamn enterprise.
Picard looks like Bezos here
Eww.
This game was hard as hell, The Genesis version was a little more easy
Man, I'm so glad you beat this game, so I don't have to :)
I love the music. The planet music slaps harder than it needs to, and the rest of the time you have a karaoke track for your own interpretation of the TNG theme.
I remember this game. I think i rented it several times and always got stuck on the derilict ship
Wish there was modern take of something like this.
the Away Team missions rock
It's so weird and ironic that Stewart would be associated with two IPs with the word "Futures Past"
Sent here by the link in Star Trek TNG NES playthrough description.
Symmetrical Patrick Stewart isn't real, he can't hurt you.
Symmetrical Patrick Stewart:
This game was Worf the time, that's for sure! :)
Here are the things I didn't particularly enjoy about this game
The music is not fitting aside from the title music
You have to visit a starbase to get a code during which time you can get ambushed trying to get to
How stupidly slow the walk speed is during away missions
They could have done way more with the space combat
That damn mine level..
If you grab the crystal with a black crew member (e.g. Worf or Geordi), does the cutscene graphic change?
It does in sickbay if you get hurt and beamed back.
Is the level layout the same on genesis? I'm having a hell of a time on the test of strength ice moon level on genesis
the alien ship is as far as i got
Same haha
Are there Klingons or borg in this game? How do I find them
Very strange how the SNES and Genesis versions are pretty much the same game, but the dialog, imagry and music are all very slighty different; including the game's title.
This game is so funny, it's all slow and Star Trek-y up in the ship, but the second the away team lands they're just mowing everyone down with phasers. I still loved this game, very disappointing ending but of course I played through it several times anyway.
Y aquí estoy 30 años después mirando como mierda se jugaba esta wea
Happy Easter Nintendo Complete.
Thanks man, you too.
You're welcome.
Next game will be a request.... tri for the game boy color, monkey puncher seriously its awesome. Hard, but awesome
Hard Game!
Absolutely love in disgust the fact they DON'T run or MELEE.
Dig that base when it comes to missions can you dig it
1.- Star Trek: The Next Generation - Future's Past (USA)
2.- Star Trek: The Next Generation - Future's Past (Europe)
3.- Star Trek: The Next Generation - Future's Past (Japan)
It actually had a localized Japanese title, 新スタートレック大いなる遺産IFDの謎を追え. In English, it's something along the lines of "New Star Trek: Tracing the Long History of the IFD"
I remember renting this a couple times but I don't remember it being so absurdly boring. I probably gave up on the missions and just went for ship combat.
This game was ridiculous. Just constantly being attacked. Then sitting forever to repair all your sh*t. Sucked. Then you fly off just to get obliterated again.
I was never into Star Trek (unlike my sister) and I'm kinda glad I didn't play this. TNG was never meant to be action-packed, this game was supposed to make the game seem like an action TV Show, and just like the show, I would find the game hard to understand.
*Laughs in Star Trek: Picard*
AVGN should make a part 2 of his Star Trek video
number one i order you to take a number two
Good reference.
Make it so...but if you can't I don't want you to bust a blood vessel.
@@brandonginsburg3120That might just be hemorrhoids.
SPOILER ALERT.
For the ending => 3:10:01.
I never understood this game jajaja
What is with the phaser sounds, that ain't star Trek! The sound effects aren't as good as the Genesis one, but it is cool to see different scenes and graphics.
Nickelodeon Star Trek The Next Generation From September 2007 Thru April 2014
You people are crazy. This is far superior to the Genesis version. The puzzles are better, the music and graphics are better, the combat is better. Also, the ship systems are better.
I think everything SNES was better than Genesis.
i never understood this game
The music...wtf.
I had the Genesis version, I never beat it of course. However I love seeing comments about other people remembering playing this game. Who knew we’d end up nostalgic for 80’s 90’s and 00 games? 🥲
i love the parts of this where the guys is shitting or pissing and doesnt play the game
I think you don't understand how this game works. Did you read the description?
@@NintendoComplete no reading is for nerds
@@nextlevelstart Ah. I see. I take it you are one too since you read my message and then responded to it?
@@NintendoCompleteno i pay a guy to read it to me while im on the toilet
@@nextlevelstart That sounds... efficient? 😆
Genesis actually has less content. Anyway.
🍒
the font in this version makes my eyes want to bleed it is soooooo garish and obtrusive and the sound effects sound too generic sci-fi and not what you'd expect for Star Trek. I would say the only advantage this has over the Sega version is having actual symphonic sound fonts is better suited for the music and the graphics are a little cleaner (plus fun extra details like seeing the Enterprise going into warp just like in the show) and you get extra scenes like everyone in the conference room before beginning a mission.
Otherwise I would say the Sega version is better, not that this is an amazing game to begin with
This game was easy and dumb. The computer is like owning a collection of lore and schematic books about the TNG universe which is the only upside. They should of had crazier shit happen when you visit planets outside of the story line.
Boring, slow, and full of dialogue. Yep this indeed an old Star Trek property. Comforting considering the state of new Trek.
New Trek is woke trash for stupid people.
I hated this level so much.
