Oh man. This brings back bitter memories for me. I loved the movie as a kid, so I remember renting this game and immediately being met with the hard difficulty. Normally that would mean that I wouldn't get far in the game but eventually something clicked and I was able to make some major progress in the game. I vividly recall making it all the way to the final boss, Ra. It was unimaginably tough but I think I finally figured out the trick to beating him. But my parents told me that it was time to go to my church's youth group. I didn't want to go obviously, but my parent's didn't care. So I paused the game and turned off the TV with plans to finish the bastard when I got home an hour or so later. I get home and turn on the TV only to find the game completely reset. Turns out that there had been a power surge in the neighborhood which turned off everything in the house briefly. Yes, there was a password but if I recall, the password took me back all the way to a super difficult part that I had to beat again before I could get back to Ra. And it was difficult enough that I either didn't want to go through it again or I simply didn't have enough time to play through it all again. In the end, I never beat the game and that has forever haunted me.

The movie is still worth watching. I was shocked by how good it still is. I liked how the Alien world didn't speak English at all. (Although they got around it by basing it off of a defunct ancient human language.) You'd never see that in a modern movie unless it were directed by Mel Gibson.

I just picked up a complete copy of this game for 7 bucks on Sega Genesis and for that price it's a pretty decent action game. The enemies are bullet sponges so grenades will be your best choice to traverse this alternate universe. I do agree that the controls are wonky and it led to a lot of frustrating moments where I'm getting lit up by an enemy because they keep stopping my duck animation when I get attacked so you have to be ready smash down on that D-Pad when those situations arise. The game indeed drags on for way too long and I actually still haven't beaten the final boss because he is the biggest bullet sponges of them all.

After this game was released, years later, other Stargate games alongside Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis TV series were made, but the Stargate SG-1 one (The Alliance) was never released. It could have been such a great game with more development and polish. Just another game that suffered from the "movie license curse" of not having enough time to properly develop the game, with the assumption that the game would be completely irrelevant if it didn't come out within a certain amount of time after the movie.

This game used the same engine as Alien 3 for the SNES and 16 bit versions of Judge Dredd. All three games were developed by Probe.

Acclaim made something good for once, up there with Turok series, Mortal Kombat ports, NBA Jam, Alien 3, Alien Trilogy, Die Hard Trilogy and Vexx. Probe Software and Tantalus Media were good developers, as the former followed the story well and the latter made some nice Ha'tak Glider flying stages.

Snesdrunk u my man but IMO tap crouch to shoot low is a nice touch. This was a good one to rent every blue moon since the length was nice. In retrospect it looks like they plastered a licensed IP on a blackthorne clone with super star wars control/feel.

One thing not mentioned here: The OST in the SNES version is fantastic, while the Genesis version's sounds like a late 90's midi ringtone.

Stargate was a pretty good movie imo. I suppose the game tie-in could have been way worse given certain publishers at the time, especially so with movie licensed video games.

I love SNES Drunks work. Is there a PS2 version of this channel? If SNES drunk wants to move on to another system that would be perfect. Almost 1900 games I heard were on it.

My primary memory of this game is quixotically trying to beat it during a rental. I was at what I thought was the final boss, but it was 2:00am so my dad just walked into the room, turned the console off, and walked out. Years later, I watched some longplays and discovered I was nowhere near the final boss.

It seems that the character sprite is a bit..floaty? Not sure what term you'd use, but he seems to move and tun on a dime with a bit more realistic movement and not so Mortal Kombat deliberate, if you follow me.
I think I get what you mean by the game being 'too long' too. At first I'd say that isn't a problem for someone like me but if the game starts to feel repetitive or like you're losing the plot in all the running and gunning I get it.
I personally don't think I'd have a problem with the whole stop and shoot/crouch and shoot thing. Sure, it kinda puts the brakes on the run and gun effect but it's not mechanically nonsensical so it'd be easy to get used to after a while. Probably also contributes to the perceived length of the game tbh lol.
I'm gonna look for this rom, cheers dude
