    Shadowrun on the Genesis is still my favorite game of all time. After all these years I will still start it up and walk the shadows. It was also my biggest inspiration for getting into game development.

      In that case, omae, find out how to get involved with Catalyst, because... look, 5e and Anarchy are full of dreck and need good editing. Either that or pick up Shawn Overcash's Decker and make a fork with a decent endgame and resizable windows.

      I'm with ya bro. Even though its now nearly 30 years old I have yet to find a game, even more recent Shadowrun games, that capture the essence of the Genesis Shadowrun. Being able to just live in that world, no end to number of quests and all the quests being so varied, and the Matrix! I've yet to play any cyberpunk game other than this one that actually lets you traverse and interact with virtual systems, not to mention stealing and selling valuable data. It's a good thing they never turned this into an MMO, I may never have grown up to live my life at all!

  • @peterbard1815
    @peterbard1815 7 лет назад +93

    I'm definitely a Super Nintendo guy, but the Genesis version of Shadowrun is where it's at. And the point about the sound card is well-taken - the Genesis sound card was obviously more limited than the SNES sound card, but it really lent it self well to the grungy, cyberpunk feel of this game. Combined with the superior play control and the fact that the game's bread and butter - the Matrix - was exponentially better, it's a pretty easy call for me. SNES version is very good, but the Genesis version is one of the best RPG's on the system.

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 7 лет назад +12

      It may have been theoretically or technically "more limited", but when a composer (mostly the Japanese) was genuinely skilled with the hardware, it was capable of some amazing sound. Every hear Sortie from Gauntlet IV? Midnight Resistance? Vapor Trail? The Shining Force games? Comix Zone? Thunder Force? Shinobi? I could go on.
      I think both systems have a solid number of amazing soundtracks, albeit very different strengths/musical styles, but that's what made the 16-bit era so unique and special.

    • @peterbard1815
      @peterbard1815 7 лет назад +2

      No, I didn't mean to suggest that the Genesis didn't have great soundtracks (I still catch myself singing the Shining World battle music from time to time), just that from a technical perspective, the SNES had more robust sound capabilities. Which it should have, since it came out two years later. And yes, the sound cards were very different, and lent themself to different things. There were a handful of SNES games that I thought would have sounded better on the Genesis, as well. Check out X-Kaliber 2097 for an example. I think it sounds pretty good, but I really would like to hear how it would sound with the Genesis sound.

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 7 лет назад +3

      No worries, but yeah, my comment was just a friendly rebuttal towards that suggestion, as I wasn't sure. It's just that most people that refer to the Snes chip being "technically more advanced" use that as another way of claiming that *all it's music* was just outright objectively superior...which is obnoxiously false, because as we know, that line of thinking doesn't take subjective musical preference into account, nor does it account for which chip is better at doing what.
      Gen: rock/metal/techno/hip-hop Snes: orchestral, ambient, oriental etc.
      But yeah I listened to most of that X-K 2097 game soundtrack, that "electronic" type sound is right up the Gen's alley, it'd sound great on it I think, as well as MMX's metal tracks. And I'd love to hear what the Shining Force games could be like on Snes, may sound as good, if not better. Cheers!

    I love the way this game kind of kicks your ego in the balls in the beginning. "Oh you want me to deliver a package? F that I'm going to go fight some ghouls.." die, reload, put on Fed Ex uniform "hello Mr.Johnson, where would you like me to take this package?"

      The cool thing about a ghoul run is that you can take out up to 20 of them for money, and if your Negotiation skill is good enough, that is a solid 400 nuyen all at once. You just need to make sure your Firearms/Magic skills are at least a 4, and Speed is 4. Which is no problem to upgrade after a handful of package and escort runs.

    • @daveferrato3400
      @daveferrato3400 4 года назад +3

      @@starwarsunfiltered7848 Really? You do ghoul runs for as low as 20 nuyen a piece? I will never do a ghoul run for less than 40 nuyen. Let's figure it out 20 x 40= how much? 800 nuyen and that is what I call a profitable run.

    • @starwarsunfiltered7848
      @starwarsunfiltered7848 4 года назад +2

      I only do ghoul runs in Redmond, near the very beginning of the game. You can only put so much beginning karma into Negotiation, so even with some (initial) good deals with Gunderson, you're only going to max out at about 20 that early on. I still have to put *some* karma into Speed, just to avoid the ghouls, and the Halloweeners. By the time I could pull 40 per ghoul, I've already moved on to doing light corporate and Matrix runs in Penumbra or Downtown.

    • @dl316bh
      @dl316bh 4 года назад +1

      Genesis Shadowrun do be like that.
      I don't even bother with the ghoul missions. I typically go Gator Shaman, so I'm never keen on testing the reliability of my spells that early in the game. Some package runs, I get my brothers crap and by that point I can deal with runs worth the time and frustration.

      The SNES version was so not loyal to the pen and paper game, that's the main reason I think it's inferior. Jake Armitage is a shaman decker street samurai, which is basically impossible in the pen and paper game. You'd never do that.

      i can understand one being better than the other because its a close tie IMO. the S.N E.S. environment is more lively. SEGA could have added some birds and animals in the wilderness and some car and drone traffic that would make made it the better game to me. but theres hours more gameplay for the Genesis version so a close tie although i think i lean towards the S.N.E.S. being the better of the two. until your video i was under the impression the Genesis was a way better version not realizing how good the S.N.E.S. game is. be nice if there were a Shadowrun 2 for the Genesis or a Shadowrun revision. ever play TechnoClash? or Syndicate? Syndicate is another close tie for those two consoles but after i researched the differences i found the Genesis to be the better of the two.

    Both the SNES and Sega Genesis games were my introduction to Shadowrun, and although I never got to actually play the tabletop RPG despite actually owning a few of the books, I love the lore and the setting. While I appreciated the SNES version's overall story and characters, I've always been more attached to the Sega Genesis version because of its easier gameplay (and the Matrix was just more fun), not to mention you can really feel the difference in power as you increase your abilities/purchase better gear and cyberware. My only regret is that I spent more money constantly renting both games than I could have spent just buying them outright... >.>
    I gotta say, though, that the Shadowrun Returns line of games has become my new go-to for cyberpunk greatness (even if I still occasionally end up going back to the older games). The remixes of songs from the older games, coupled with a cameo from Jake Armitage in Shadow Returns, were just amazing homages to these old gems of the early-to-mid 90s. :)
    Thanks for the vid, SNESDrunk!

Something about the sound system for genesis just sounds amazing. There's quite a few games that I love comparing musically and depending on the genre, the genesis comes out on top. • @Krazyk007x2
    @Krazyk007x2 Год назад +2

    The Genesis version of Shadowrun broke a lot of ground at the time, was very in depth & got very little recognition for it. You could save your game, it was open world, non-linear & had a completely customizable skill tree, which was all either completely or nearly unheard of at the time. Hacking the Matrix wasn't just for stealing/selling information. You could also shut down a company's security measures & unlock doors/safes, so that raiding their building was much easier. Don't have the skills to do it? Hire a "cyberdecker" (hacker) & use them to do it. Wanna learn to do it yourself? Just stack skill points in the right areas & eventually you can, even if you're the wrong class. Security still too tight for you? Hire a team of Shadowrunners & gun them all down. Wanna be better with a shotgun? Automatic? Pistol? Stack your skill points. Wanna learn magic? Stack your skill points.
    This was all in 1994, when the biggest games were simple side-scrollers, fighting games & shooters.

    I love seeing how the Genesis was able to top the SNES every once in a while. It didn't have Mode 7 or Super FX cartridges, but was capable of very impressive special effects.

    • @euphorik3120
      @euphorik3120 Год назад

      mode 7 is a seventh mode of the S.N.E.S. system for scaling & rotation that the SEGA Genesis hardware also is capable of implementing if processing developers instruction code to do. so no, the Genesis/Mega Drive doesn't have a 7th operation mode to function in when scaling and/or rotating. its not seen as often for the Genesis due to developers know how and programming tools available, the S.N.E.S. having such readily available software to easily apply s&r for its hardware set specifically to operate scaling & rotation when switching various modes.

    The SNES Shadowrun would sometimes softlock if you miss an "ask about" prompt, gating you off entirely from progression.
    I remember distinctly missing an NPC that had "vampires" as an ask prompt and I was shut out at about the 3/4s mark and had to start over.

  • @dosboot1

    As a longtime fan of the SNES game, I feel like it should be over-emphasized that the Genesis game should *not* be brushed aside so easily. I think there are a lot of SNES fans like myself who quit too early. I gave the Genesis version brief attention long ago, wasn't immediately interested, and only recently corrected my mistake. The Genesis version is a great game to give a second chance when you find the right motivation.
    You hardly mentioned the money balance in this game though! To me, this was the most noteworthy area of analysis, and the early game fetch quests needed to get off the ground isn't quite characteristic of the problem later on (even though the starter missions get more attention in discussions). Money grinding rises to a real design problem towards the late game; the cost for cyberware, matrix programs and other advanced gear is too expensive even after setting aside multiple hours to grind Matrix jobs in the most efficient manner possible.
    There's a built in cheat code to give yourself money and judicious use of this code during the mid/late-game makes playing the game far more enjoyable. I'd strongly encourage new players not to fuss about cheating once recompleting those same Matrix jobs starts to feel like work. I'm grateful another fan gave me this advice when I started out!

      @SharazJek 7 лет назад

      Yeah, I usually hate to use cheat codes on a first playthrough as I want to experience a game as the developers intended; but in this case it was either that or drop it since I don't always have the time for long gaming sessions anymore and want to always walk away feeling like I've made progress. Turns out it was a great experience once I got into it.

    • @LiberalsGettheBulletToo
      @LiberalsGettheBulletToo 6 лет назад +2

      I don't think the money issue was a real problem. An annoyance, certainly. but it also pushed the play-time from maybe 5-8 hours up to 20 or 30.
      It's not much different to the time required to top out the combat stats.
      The only really impractical items are Cyberdecks and software.
      But you didn't need any of those big-ticket items to beat the game. Only to find out all the secrets; collecting the 'Chernobyl' passwords from all the different corps and hacking in to the black-ops server.
      Ito Ogami is the only real barrier to progression. However, renting a mage for, was it 700 or 1,300? is all you need to beat him. Even a 500 nuyen runner with a shotgun can take him out with some luck.
      There is also one trick which is useful mid-game; take a run at the LoneStar in downtown, for 1,700 or whatever, and enter the front door.
      Each time you enter and leave, there's a random chance the Shadowrun mission item is in that locker, unguarded.
      You'll actually make more money than the run pays from stim-packs dropping out of it, but also get karma.

    The ambient music, the sunset/night punk colors, the slow chases, the art, goddamn this game was a masterpiece (I also have fond memories of Light Crusader)
    Genesis Games are something of a oddity to me, while some (like Sonic) give off this bright vibrant world, also so many of them give off this simplistic gritty ambiance with their colors/sound that to this day gives me anxiety and a rush, like a AAA horror game ever could (Resident Evil franchise has been doing a pretty good job lately though*)

    I wish modern Shadowrun games followed the cues of this Genesis game, this is one of my favorite games of all time. Running corps and hacking through the matrix, upgrading your character with implants. Huge miss that they didn't continue with this theme vs. the boring turn based style that new games have.

    Yeah I like them both but I prefer the Genesis game. One thing I like about the Genesis game that you didn't mention is that it requires much less grinding for money to upgrade equipment despite needing to buy ammo clips in the Genesis game and having unlimited ammo on the SNES.
    I'm still upset that the Sega CD game never came out in the US though.

      Nuyen farming is close to nonexistent in the SNES version. It's all awarded from those minesweeper matrix runs and the caryard fights but you do get those little sums of money. The kind of amounts that make you laugh. Ten here, twenty there, oh sixty...yay!

    I've actually played and completed both versions. The story in the snes version is a little better, but the gameplay and visuals are better on the genesis. Personally I prefer the genesis version just because it's closer to the pen and paper version of shadowrun.

    I did enjoy this on the Genisis (that's all I had back then). But it was my first introduction to the world of Shadowrun. I'm playing Shadowrun Return and Hong Kong for the first time as well. I cannot wait for Cyberpunk 2077 as I've been a fan of movies like Blade Runner, Ghost in a Shell and Deus Ex (2000) which draws inspiration from.

      Yeah, so rare that I paid an embarrassing amount of money for it a year ago. I wish it was something I had known about back in the early 2000's before the price skyrocketed. I think before 2008-ish it was going for around $100...and then RUclips made every game famous.

    Genesis ShadowRun is a 7.5/10... SNES ShadowRun is a 9/10... I'd always buy GamePro mags and look for games with low scores in Graphics but high scores in everything else... while my friends always looked for games with great Graphics and the other 3 categories didn't matter much (we were 11 years old after all).
    If I were grading SNES ShadowRun... it would be:
    Graphics - 3/5
    Sound - 5/5
    Controls - 3.5/5
    Fun Factor - 5/5

    And don't forget 'abbacab' to deck you out with tones of Nuyen that you absolutely have to have if you play decker, because your cyberdeck is massively expensive.
    You can also help load yourself up with karma from the get-go and that really helps because your stats are horrible when you start and you'll fail missions a lot.

    Great review! I own both versions of the game and have to say I've played the Genesis version more. I must admit I haven't completed either game, but got much further into the Genesis one. The SNES one seems pretty good too, but I got put off by the awkward controls. I love how open the world is in Genesis game.

  • @dl316bh
    @dl316bh 4 года назад +2

    I've always liked both versions, but the Genesis game is head and shoulders above the other in my opinion. The gameplay's a lot better, the Matrix is actually an appreciable chunk of the game, you can do actual runs and the game introduced me to A LOT more of the Shadowrun world and lore, something the SNES version has a lot less of (though Maria Mercurial can be spotted in a club and you actually fight a dragon). The SNES versions story is a bit better, though.

    I'm shocked by the comments about saving your game. I lived in Florida when it came out and my first copy was broken. I couldn't save my game, my friends who also bought it couldn't save either. I returned it to Kmart for another copy and had the same problem. they did let me get a refund and then I bought it from another store and that copy wouldn't save either. Sega of America was no help. I had friends that kept trying to find a copy with a working save but it never happened :/ My friend would leave his system on so he wouldn't lose his game. after three weeks his roommate turned it off so he could play sonic. so he moved his tv into his bedroom and would lock his door before leaving.

      I know Rings of Power had a save bug so that most copies (all copies?) wouldn't actually save, but I've never heard of Shadowrun being affected. My copy still saves to this day. Maybe a bad batch went out to your region. Whatever the cause, that really sucks! I do love the dedication of your friend. lol

    I thoroughly enjoyed both games and celebrate their differences. The SNES story is a little more focused, but the settings just look so much better (and I enjoyed it's music more) while the genesis version supplies a vastly more open-ended experience, but the top-down graphics were always a killjoy to me
    The SNES version let you hire other runners too... some of which had an annoying tendency to leave your party when you needed them most.

    I love Shadowrun - Both the Snes, Sega and pnp RPG.
    Between the Snes and Sega, it's incredibly hard to say which one is better because certain things like the music and the train driving by is incredibly well-done.
    While other things is just better in the Sega game without question. I love them both but I tend to play the Snes one more yearly and the Sega one more " _Whenever I feel_ ".
    Also here's the thing you... Were not entirely correct about:
    1:50 - Archtypes. The only one of them that can actually be considered more solid as a class is the Shaman, but the game won't stop you from getting cyberware as a Mage-type character, but doing so will reduce your magic stat.
    2:15 - That's because the game is based on the pnp Ruleset so when you are in combat, the game looks at your Quickness stat in order to determine the variables such as run speed and attack speed. Think of it as Non-Combat Phase and Combat-Phase.
    2:40 - Ahum, you're doing Shadowruns. And unlike most RPG's, this isn't just an arbitrary thing but actual missions.
    3:08 - Wait, what? That's just not true at all. You can upgrade every skill to max without suffering any reduction in any other stat - Unless you speak of Essence which isn't a skill, it's your *SOUL* put simply, which only reduces from installing Cyberware ( _in this version_ ) and it can never go below 0.1 ( _if it did, you'd die_) . The only other stat connected with Essence is Magic as it's directly died to essence. 6 in Essence = 6 in Magic ( _if you are the Shaman or hack the game to be a Mage_ ). But 5.8 in Essence = 5 in Magic.
    PS. There's also a very interesting Mega-CD version of Shadowrun that's very text-driven. It's quite interesting.

  • @delgim1

    You commented that on genesis when engaged in battle it slows you down which is annoying. That actually engages your agility/speed stat or whatever it’s called. You have a set speed in the game otherwise but when entering combat your speed depends on that character stat. Level it up and you will move faster.
    Annoying sure, but incredible mechanic wouldn’t you say?

    Shaman with a headjack lets you everything the game, takes a bit but eventually your decking is good enough, and selling the data files is the biggest time synch but best cash maker bar none.
    Also the Redmond barrens is the best place to get karma, the missions are so short that even though its 1 Karma a run you can do 5 in the time the hardcore missions take.
    Favourite soundtrack ever btw

    The genesis version was interesting ill give it that, but the Snes version with Jake Armitage was just awesome. The funky spooky dialogue music, the various music tracks in the game and the final showdown with... (won't say because of spoilers.) It's also good to remember that the recent Shadowrun Returns trilogy on steam was based on the visuals of the SNES version and that's saying something. The only difference is that it's not an ARPG, and is turn based.

    Genesis version hands down. I briefly played the snes version, after the genesis and was baffled on the differences.
    For me it was the genesis version cause :
    1. More open world. I'd spend a lot of time just completing jobs over and over.
    2. Hiring mercs
    3. More things to put karma into
    4. I think the graphics looked better
    5. The matrix was awesome
    6. Did snes have cyber gear? I don't think it did

  • @KurtFrans
    @KurtFrans Месяц назад

    I like the SNES version the best, especially how the Matrix was handled, it matched the era better it felt right, it made sense for the RPG's of the era and was straight forward Strategy and tabletop style logically, it showed the value numbers and everything as a tabletop would handle, the other hid more of the information and was more of a shooter like you'd have today but that's not really tabletop and RPG mechanics, that's closer to an MMO style and twin stick shooter.
