    Shane had pace and was able to create so many tries for other players as well. He was a joy to watch, as you never knew what he was going to do next and he was a tough man as he survived so many big tackles by players so much bigger than him but most of the time they couldn't lay a finger on him he was so fast

    Shane made me love the game to the point I went on to play rugby and I’ve also past my coaching and refereeing qualification. And I’m a huge fan of ospreys his club. All thanks to Mr Shane Williams. Also he was told when he was growing up he was to short to play rugby but who’s got the last laugh.

    I know this is a 3 year old video, but it was a delight. Although he is now retired, Shane - referred to as 'ickle shane' would probably have been our (wales) highest try scorer - sadly he was dumped for a couple of years for being too short and slight, but you need a sparky mosquito on your team. Nice to see someone respect the great man.

    Shane was dropped from the national team for being too small, he then went through a rough time trying to become stronger, taking supplements and spending days at the gym. After being dropped from the team, the team itself went through a slump and lost 10 consecutive games, during this time Shane had pulled himself together and told himself to ignore what the Welsh coach had said to him and double down on what he personally believed were his strengths, his speed and agility. He was later brought back into the team but was treated like a glorified water boy by the coach (according to an interview with Shane made talking about his time under the coach Steve Hansen). But Shane proved himself 10 times over, scoring tries against the best teams in the world and went on to become one of the best players Wales had seen and to this day holds the record for most tries scored for Wales

  • @larrycole9861
    @larrycole9861 11 месяцев назад

    Shane Williams was always the smallest player on the field. But his pace and agility was unequalled. The last time he scored for Wales, was against Australia in 2011. I was in the stadium. In his final game before retirement it happened 50 feet from where I was sitting. Wow! What a player...

    Just to give you a better idea how the set up works. You would earn a contract with a club after playing school rugby and youth rugby under a certain club, once you have the contract you play for that team until you are sold or move yourself to a new club once your contract is up. Whilst you are with the club (top league clubs mainly) you could earn yourself an International spot for your country. Most Tier 1 teams (best 10 teams in the world via world ranking) play 8-10 games a year so if you have 100 caps for your country it effectively means you have been consistently one of the best in your position for 10 years or so. You still play for your club but get released for the game at international level.
    In the UK and Ireland they have a team called the British and Irish lions who play once every 4 years and rotate Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The best players from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are picked and travel for a 3 games series. It doesn't effect world rankings but it is a big occasion.

    He's an old fashioned type of winger from the days before Lomu changed rugby union forever. Before Lomu, the backs were small, fast and agile; the forwards typically big, slow (and thick). The immortal Jonah changed it all!
    I suggest you react to "Most Entertaining Three Minutes of Rugby Ever". It is three minutes of continuous play rather than the highlights you have been watching. This will give you an idea of what an actual rugby union match is like.

    Not shown in highlight reels (for any player) is what he does when he doesn't have the ball. Shane had great awareness and a high work rate.
    One observation you made.....I'm a wee bit shorter than Shane and there is this thing about rugby. Big guys are good at playing rugby about 4.5 feet above the ground unfortunately for them, short guys are good at playing about 3 feet above the ground. This pulls the bigguns out of their comfort zone.
