Pentax Spotmatics had it figured out very well. Properly cared for, Spotmatic models might outlive us all.

I got my Spotmatic SP 2 with whole kit of Takumar lenses with original metal hoods the main lens I got was the Takumar 50mm1.4 Radioactive lens , 35mm 3.5 & 135mm 3.5 . I put the camera on a shelf and let it sit . Somebody gave me a roll of film and nothing came out. In farther checking the camera I found the light seals were worn out so I went to Walmart and for a few dollars I got the supplies to replace the light seals and mirror bumper so now I have functioning camera

Whenever i see a good video describing the classic Asahi Pentax Spotmatic, it gives me a warm & nostalgic feeling. Truly a quality camera whose basic design influenced photgraphy even to this day. One aspect that i hope some shooter or historian can solve is the debut of the Pentax Spotmatic in 1964, the same year Tokyo hosted the Olympics. Have been unable to confirm anecdotal stories of camera being sold to the visitors w film kiosks in the Olympic Village. The marketing opportunity for Asahi Pentax in 1964 seemed just perfect. 😊

I agree. When the Beatles arrived in New York in early 1964 they carried Pentax cameras. I don’t think they were Spotmatic’s but that must have helped Pentax sales. Thanks for watching.

Thanks Jules. Suggestion: how about a video on using alternative light metering instruments like the old fashioned external light meters, or a cellphone light metering app to use with a cameras like this one. I recently bought an identical one, but the original battery is flat.. was thinking of buying the applicable Wein-cell hearing aid batteries in order to test its metering

One thing that confuses me a little and nobody seems to explain it. Is the correct use of the manual-auto switch on the lense, when your using the light meter, do you have it in the manual or auto setting ? Or dose it not matter what it’s in, what is the switch actually for.

@@robwhite461 Leave the switch on the lens set to auto. When you press the meter switch it will stop down the lens for metering. If you leave the switch on the lens set to manual the lens will stay at the aperture you set on the lens. If it is set to a smaller aperture it will be difficult to focus because the view thru the finder will be dark.

You can leave it on auto most of the time.
One reason to use manual is if you want to get a depth of field preview.

Hello Jules, my Hotshoe on my Spotmatic is loose, do you have any tips on how to tighten it? Much appreciated, thank you.

I’m curious, most Spotmatics do not have a permanent hot shoe, but rather an add-on hot shoe accessory that clips over the eyepiece. To which model of Spotmatic are you referring?
