One of the writers has said the ending isn’t a kiss. They posed the question of why the infected are violent: if they are simply a fungus and their goal is to spread into another organism to act as a host, what evolutionary reason would they have to be violent to them? And the answer is that they don’t and they aren’t, they become violent when we resist. Tess has no reason to fight back against that infected, so the infected had no reason to be violent to her. They don’t bite us to eat us, they bite us to spread their fungus from their mouth through our bodies. It wasn’t a kiss, it was simply the proper natural way to infect and turn her.

People theorized last week the infection in show spread through flower dough. Rewatching the first episode with this confirmation Joel and his family were lucky to not get infected.
-they didn’t have pancakes for breakfast
-sarah didn’t have the raisin cookies
-the old lady that was infected had a biscuit in an earlier scene
-Joel himself was a special diet where he wouldn’t eat grain.
-Joel and Sarah did’t get a birthday cake.
Another interesting change in that making the infection spread in 2003 which was the hottest recorded year at the time. And the very first scene in the show warned of this.
Edit: Okay I should probably clarify I personally don’t actually believe this nor do I claim to have created this theory. These were points I got from the discussions I’ve seen around.

15:10 (About what Aaron says). Aaron is thinking about the infection like Zombies from other media. from what I understand, if you die at all, you cannot be infected. The fungus can still grow on your dead body, but you will still just be dead, it doesn't magically reanimate you after death like a zombie. The fungus acts as a parasite, so if it takes over a host and their mind, that host needs to be alive. Its just a parasitic relationship, with the goal of the fungus trying to reproduce using the human, controlling their mind and actions to spread the fungus to other humans by any means, and on and on it goes. My thoughts on "Save who you can save."
Craig Mazin talked about that moment and said it was based on (or about) something different, but his "official" take doesn't rule out mine, so...
I think "Save who you can save" is something Joel and Tess have said to each other dozens of times. I think it's kind of a mantra... or a self-preservation code. And while I think that it is about "who you can save," I also think that in most cases, when one of them was saying it to the other, they were referring to someone they COULDN'T save. "You save who you save... and you eliminate or leave behind who you can't."
One saying it to the other has always meant, "Hey! You know what's up. We can't hesitate. It's 'Go' time!"
And, as we remember, there was like a second after she said that to him for it to register and then he DIPPED. Grabbed Ellie and they were GONE.

Even though I played the game and knew how it would go down I was somehow even MORE terrified in the museum scene than when I played the game! The fact that Neil Druckman himself directed this episode makes it even more perfect. And from the cold open showing how cordyceps originated in Jakarta it proves the Bread Theory was right. Which makes rewatching the pilot even MORE tense because you see how lucky Joel, Tommy and Sarah were that they didn’t get infected from eating any flour based foods.
As for Tess’ ending, I think it was actually done better than the game. The scene of the mycelium (the fungal threads) going into her mouth was incredibly disgusting but the look in her eye when it happened showed that even though she was about to turn into one of them she managed used that iron will of hers to force herself through those last seconds before turning to burn them all. Stand and applaud for Anna Torv everyone!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Fun Fact: So Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin did more research on fungus and found out that if spores were as much of a threat as they are in the game that humanity would be completely wiped out. So they changed it to another scary fact about fungus which is that there are some species that grow so big that they can cover entire acres of rainforest in Brazil. So they added that instead of spores.

I love how even if you're not that familiar with the game, just the atmosphere of it all, and just seeing the two clickers is enough to put shivers down your spine. How even though there were just two of them, it still took a while for the characters to put them down. Really shows how unrelenting and hard it is to kill these things.
Also, I really love the addition of Ellie getting bitten again, because I feel like that definitely reinforces the idea of her being immune in Joel's head. At first, Joel was very adamant that Ellie would turn eventually, but seeing Tess's bite mark, compared to Ellie's fresh one, was definitely the push that Joel needed to continue on and find the Fireflies.

So far, the changes made have been great. Joel is more humanized, mentally and physically (he's not quite as brawly and big as in the game, and the wear and tear of age is pointed out by Tess' comment on their knees), having Ellie being bit again to reaffirm her immunity as the spores originally served that purpose. We even get to see the infected preferred and most logical way of spreading the fungus (which was incredibly disturbing might I add). I also really love the small scene in the hotel where Ellie goes kinda of the "track" and starts joking and talking with herself. It was nice to see, as I find those small exchanges in the game to be some of the most rewarding and fun parts of the experience.

Like if runners are newer infected, why would 30+ swarms exist when people tend to travel in small groups. It’s just a smart way to explain the waves of enemies that we see in video games
