I learnt the other day that packaging is often designed to optimise the space in shipping containers. A product package might seem illogical when you open it, but when boxed up in multiples in the brown cardboard boxes, they form a standard size that will fit, in multiples, on a wooden pallet, which is in turn sized to minimise the wasted space in the shipping container. So the box for the instructions is mostly there as a filler to stop the tape moving in the box. Imagine the effect of over 10,000 rolls in 3,500 sales packages, all packed on a wooden pallet if they were free to roll a couple of inches. It could make the pallet unstable. The size of the packaging was the smallest standard form size that would contain the rolls, without having to get the packaging company to make a new custom cutting die for a slightly smaller box.
There ARE usually reasons for EVERYTHING! I hate when people complain about something but don't check first to see if there's a REASON for it. Or if THEY'RE wrong!*

I used to use this 3m stretchy rubber membrane tape at work years ago. It was like 500$ a roll and it was soo sticky that it would rip pretty much the whole 1/8th inch layer off of plywood or the paint off of walls. If it stuck to your skin you had to use acetone to get it off or it would literally rip your skin off. Haven't seen it anywhere in years now.
@IHas it it 3m VHB tape but we got bigger rolls of them for work. But it is amazing stuff but you need to let it set for 48 to have it strongest effect I also think if he did that with the alien tape he would of had better results I worked with that vhb tape for the last 12 years basically everyday.
In all fairness it did say in the instructions to wash under running water. Not soak and pick at it in a bucket. It may still be reusable if washed per instructions?
yeah but how many people use acetone to tape things to their walls at home? Sure that would be like the best lab test but these are most of like a DIY home thing
What all these test videos forget is that just like alot of adhesives this tape works alot better after it's had some time to set in. They can also sometimes work far better when clamped into place for an extended period of time and not just pushed on with a few pounds of pressure. I say this knowing that it's not always the case but I have used double sided Gorilla tape (i believe that was the brand) but when it failed the first time after loading the shelf right after I put a weight against it for an entire day and it feels like it's bolted to the wall now.
This tape claims not to use adhesives, so comments about set/cure times may not apply. For some uses, it appears ideal. For permanent mounting where some of the forces are shear forces, not so much.

Looks like a giant version of the adhesive inside 3M strips. They instruct to wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol, press together firmly for a total of 60 seconds, and let wall-connected strips cure for 1 hour, removing the object and its connected strips on it for that curing time. You can't do that ofc because this is a one, not two-piece solution, but you can support the object for longer and/or use clamps. You might get better results, but also might not haha. Even the 3M strips say not to hang high value items, or over your bed headboard (ow!), and I've seen them, albeit very rarely, fail over time on heavier objects. Anyway just some context, great vid as usual!
This stuff works best on closed surfaces like tiles, glass, you name it. It also requires quite an amount of initial pressure - the more, the better it works sticks. After applying the tape, give it some time to "suck in" and also relax. Given that it is pretty thick and does not bond chemically, I would not advise to hang a shelf or anything "mission critical".

3M's double-sided VHB tape has really good properties and costs a fraction. Not reusable though since you won't be able to remove it. Glueing parallel to the grain on your plywood made the strength of the tape weaker since the tape was pulling slivers of wood off. You're depending on the integrity of the plywood as well as how sticky the tape is which compromises the test a little. Taping a shelf to drywall will give you better results.
You need to try it on a smooth surface, you can see from the surface of the tape that it wasn't all stuck. Also I would like to see what happens if you try to peel the carpet up after 30 days.

It's not adhesive and it's not meant to be permanent. It's able to release the surface it's bonded to and be reused because it's like velcro on the nanoscale. It peels apart when a moment is applied to pull edges away from each other. You have to orient it properly for best results.
I'm on the fence about it just because it's so overpriced. I couldn't be convinced to buy it when there's cheaper replacement items for this tape specifically made for holding things to walls or floors, etc... Imo 🤷🏻♀️
If you need double sided tape and you don’t want it to go anywhere I highly suggest 3M VHB tape with the primer. That stuff is the real deal but it would destroy a wall so keep that in mind.
There's definitely uses for it but there's been double sided tape for decades now. I wouldn't use any of it as a permanent solution for holding any weight though. Like, I might would use it to hold that shelf into place while you drive a screw through it but I wouldn't be trying to depend on it for years or anything.
the box with instructions is for packaging reasons, otherwise with 3 rolls in a square or rectangular package, there would be movement by the 3rd roll of tape in shipping. it is just there to make sure the tape remains stationary for shipping.
You really need to revisit this. The instructions actually address some things you tried. For instance, it says that any application over painted surfaces or sheet rock are permanent. Also, they suggest applying pressure for 15 seconds on initial application, and then another 15-30 seconds when attaching the object to the tape. You were a bit more hasty. Furthermore, it goes on to say not to use on surfaces that are not even. You could see when attaching to the wood (and the shelf) you didn't have 100% contact as they direct. You would need to sand the wood down to be smooth before it would be an honest test Finally, the surfaces must be clean before you attach it. So their reusable claim may still hold up if you follow the instructions. Lets be clear, I'm just as dubious about its efficacy as you, but you test results are just as dubious :)
I've seen similar results on other youtube channels. About the shower soap holder though. If the holder gets directly sprayed with water and especially if any of the soap makes contact with the tape, it will come down really fast. Maybe steam and air moisture won't do it but direct hit will.
Lol you know what's funny? I got some, played around with it and got a good idea of how it works and how strong it is. The claims are over the top, but if you use it right it's a pretty amazing product. And I found that if I use a heat gun to heat it up it really helps. It's only as strong as the bond you get right at the start. Similar to that clear stuff they used on junk mail when you'd get a letter with a penny or nickle in the window.
Love your videos and went back to watch some of your older ones and couldn't help but noticed that in your onewheel video i live not far from that parking lot
I did put up a small sign, maybe ½ lbs and it was mounted fantastic, until a few hours later where the sign fell on the floor. The tape is only sticky in a short time. It's great for holding a ruler on a board to guide your cut and then throw out afterward.
The instructions in these type of tape generally tell you to leave to 'cure' for up to 24 hrs- to get the best result. I put a towel rail up on my daughter' s bathroom over a year ago and it's still up, with several heavy bath towels in it all day every day. They also work much better on surfaces such as metal to tike like my daughter's towel rail.
The box for the instructions is not so much for the instructions, it's more so there to provide padding to ensure the product is not rattling or moving around inside the packaging. Since there's only 3 rolls of tape in the packaging, the 'instructions box' takes up the 4th space. This is very common in most modern packaging, especially smart phones.
I'd heard of this stuff and had my doubts it could hold anything up nearly as well as the adds show that it "does". Watching this confirms what I thought.
he did not read all of the direction, you need to let the shelf set over night before putting anything on it, and on the back it actually says to use on clean flat surfaces only and not to put it on painted walls or drywall as it will seal permanently.
I'm a truck driver, I've used it to hold the dog bowl to the floor. To hold the inside door panel up till I put the screws back in, third hand. To seal a window closed, water tight. True high price. But it does work better than duck tape or anything else for the most part. It has its unique uses.
The commercial also states it sticks to most surfaces. And also says works as permanent alternative to nails. Meaning they don't recommend removing it from drywall.
I wanted him to do the block test thing and try using smaller people bc a normal person wouldn’t use that much if it cost that much they would use it sparingly
When it comes to product testing, you've three real choices. TylerTuber: semi-chaotic, numbers are non existent, beard FreakinReviews: more organized, numbers for things that conventionally have measurements, goatee ProjectFarm: Sheogorath's personal enemy, numbers out the wazoo, midnight shade or less.
For the weights on the shelf. Did you wipe off the make shift wall with a barely damp rag to get any dust that may make it harder to stick. Helps alot.
If I were using this tape, after seeing that it is elastic, I would stretch it to make it longer and last longer, then apply it, this will not only make it last longer, it will create horizontal friction making it more taught and give it a better grip.

Furthermore, it goes on to say not to use on surfaces that are not even. You could see when attaching to the wood (and the shelf) you didn't have 100% contact as they direct. You would need to sand the wood down to be smooth before it would be an honest test
Finally, the surfaces must be clean before you attach it. So their reusable claim may still hold up if you follow the instructions.
Lets be clear, I'm just as dubious about its efficacy as you, but you test results are just as dubious :)
That was furniture grade plywood. Sanding would do little to improve the quality of the surface.
I've seen similar results on other youtube channels. About the shower soap holder though. If the holder gets directly sprayed with water and especially if any of the soap makes contact with the tape, it will come down really fast. Maybe steam and air moisture won't do it but direct hit will.
I wanna see you do stuff with the rd printer
Lol you know what's funny? His shirt says "toyoda" and yesterday I was under my lexus gs300 doing the oil pan gasket and I was waiting on my bro to give me a wrench and I was wondering around looking at the parts and I came across the words "toyoda" 🤣 I thought it was just cause of star wars but I'll be damned it was actually on the car stamped into the metal lol
I have been waiting so long for this
Glad I caught the premiere, however the chat was VERY chaotic. I wish in the future you have moderators. Other than that I really enjoyed it!
Please stop bring up politics in the replies, I dont want people to start arguing!
Trumppp
@@swedish_meatbaII bruh please no.
Eyo yeah you right. Chat sucked, but hey. Great video lmao. Also, hi remember me?
@@thesnakemarinegaming9892 hi snake!!
(Of course I remember you!)
Did someone say politics?
You have to use shelf brackets with the shelf and tape.
Trump or Biden?

Biden

I would say, for a shelf, you need a 90° L to allow enough surface area for the tape to adhere.
Try washing it in Dawn soap. You can use that to make the "stretchy sticky hands" toy sticky again after it gets dirty, whereas using just water to rinse it off doesnt do much
Thank you for testing these
Suggestion for a video: Buy a bunch of items/tools from Publishers Clearing House and compare them to the name brand version of the same item/tool. Depending on the amount of items you buy you could have multiple videos!!
PCH sells stuff?? I though they just brought balloons and checks to people.
@@hanner8830 Maybe he meant Harbor Freight.
I think you did a very fair test. And also your suggestions are accurate. Thank you.
Tyler: Wow! It’s solid.
Me: I would hope so, you’re jumping on the floor😂
You should try doing a control group, like if you also screwed the shelf in and checked how much that can hold
Ridge is probably the only sponsored products on youtube that I might consider buying.
I'm a truck driver,
I've used it to hold the dog bowl to the floor.
I would like to see you test green gobbler drain cleaner
I wanted him to do the block test thing and try using smaller people bc a normal person wouldn’t use that much if it cost that much they would use it sparingly
you should try hammering the shelf to the wall for the best chances and put it on a smoother surface
When it comes to product testing, you've three real choices.
TylerTuber: semi-chaotic, numbers are non existent, beard
FreakinReviews: more organized, numbers for things that conventionally have measurements, goatee
ProjectFarm: Sheogorath's personal enemy, numbers out the wazoo, midnight shade or less.
Tape brand: build your house completely out of tape, no more screws or drills
Mother Nature: 2020 has only begun
this is like the casual version of the Project Farm, and that's not a bad thing
For the weights on the shelf. Did you wipe off the make shift wall with a barely damp rag to get any dust that may make it harder to stick. Helps alot.
If I were using this tape, after seeing that it is elastic, I would stretch it to make it longer and last longer, then apply it, this will not only make it last longer, it will create horizontal friction making it more taught and give it a better grip.
You should do a video testing all the different Dollar Tree knives.
Looks to me like the same technology used in command hooks. Also there’s a video idea. “How strong are commas hooks?”
" _They put a box in here for the instructions?_ "
That's $7.42 right there.
Gotta give the man props for using the same sponser
made a great point there....next video...which chewed bubblegum works best to hold up shelves
