18:00 - Actually, yeah that's pretty much it. I think those crystals are a type of salt, which every time you charge the cell, they dissolve a bit into the water. I think the slightly saltier water then gets absorbed by that cotton pad thing, and acts as an electrolyte, forming a battery (albeit not a very good one). That's my guess for how it works, anyway.
My guess is that it's just a zinc-carbon cell with dry ammonium chloride, so that the zinc isn't corroded in storage. For long-term storage, 18650 Lithium cells are pretty good. (Make sure there's no parasitic ballast, only mechanical switches!) There are also silver-based cells lasting up to 40 years, but nobody seems to be making those. Why lose customers for 40 years when you could just keep selling disposable garbage?
The hydrolight works off a saline electrolytic cell.you have to add salt to the water to get as much power as you are supposed to actually get.thats why it's so dim.typical faucet water doesnt have enough salinity for the cell to function at optimal levels.add table salt to the water and you'll see the difference.it would work best stranded on a beach because of the high saline content of ocean water

A water-activated battery is a disposable reserve battery that does not contain an electrolyte and hence produces no voltage until it is soaked in water for several minutes. Typically, a large variety of aqueous solutions can be used in place of plain water. This battery type is specifically designed to pollute less (see environmentally friendly claims) due to the lesser use or the absence of heavy metals. Water-activated batteries have been used in radiosondes that shouldn't contain heavy metals since they regularly fall to the ground or ocean surface, and indefinitely remain there. Kits using copper-magnesium cells activated by water or the liquid sample itself are also in development. Another water-activated battery had been invented by Susumu Suzuki of Total System Conductor. Aluminium anodes are used on many water-activated batteries designed for use with salt water such as seawater. The HydroPak uses water-activated disposable fuel cartridges as an alternative to lead acid battery packs and portable generators. It uses water added to sodium borohydride which releases hydrogen fuel for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. It can be re-charged simply by replacing the fuel cartridge rather than the lengthy recharging that other batteries require, however the cartridges cost $20 each.

The water reacts with those "crystals" which are likely an electrolyte like salt. The metal and the foil wrap is likely something like zinc and aluminum the water should make the cloth when wet creates an electrolytic bridge. And you have a battery. In fact it's how a normal aa or aaa actually most batteries work. It's just basically a battery without the acid/electrolytic fluid inside.

I think the battery works by the cotton and the crystals absorb water, the crystals ionize the water. The electrons bounce between the mesh and the core, and maybe that black thing is to polarize them, so it alternates the current maybe?
Most maglights have modes turn it on and use the lens as a button to cycle through them. I have also seen it as a light press of the power button, not pressing hard enough to click the button
Probably carbon and zinc inside there along with some type of salt. The water along with the salt is what makes the electrolyte. However it's going to be fairly weak as a battery goes. (They could have made 3 or 4 sections instead of one big one, and then put it in series for a better result.)
I have this light. I didn't wet the battery cell yet so I hope it has a good shelf life. I'm probably going to mount a small lithium ion battery inside where the cell goes or maybe build a cartridge and then charge it with my olight USB battery charger.
I honestly thought the water light wasnt that bad at first but when you have to keep recharging it constantly in water well thats a problem. I was thinking like camping and you get lost might be handy but the hand crank one not only works better and is brighter but its also more convenient and doesn't require you to get wet every 30 secs so unless they could extend to time duration I honestly dont see a reason why you would get the water powered one over the crank one.
On the inside if I'm in the right mindset, those crystals are salt, the cloth is to hold the moisture, the two metals are probably zinc and copper. To get the power the water dissolves the salt, the salt is an electrolyte so it is able to carry extra electrons. Those extra electrons transfer to the metals and flow through the system creating the small amount of light you get.
