To be honest, it was when I was registering for my senior year fall semester classes, I realized it was the last opportunity (within reason and as an undergrad) to finish my pre-reqs

You should look through psych notes the next time you operate on a patient with extensive psych history. It can be really depressing to read about what people have gone though and I can totally understand how psychiatrists have the highest rate of suicide given what they treat everyday.

As for myself, I have a mental disorder and I know exactly what it feels like to be on psychiatric medication and in a hospital setting. I can relate to my patients a lot better because of my past experiences and I have always loved how complex the mind is and what the conscious and unconscious is capable of. After I experienced some events that took a turn in my life, I have decided to pursue the field of psychiatry which I am most passionate about.
Also, I am Interested in research involving schizophrenia, mood disorders, pharmacology, and genetics. But more specifially, research relating to atypical anti-psychotics and their side effects.

What does it mean?
Not related to physician suicide rates but- I've always felt like hospitalists (internal med doctors) have the hardest. They juggle between all the different specialist consults and their opinions on the patient, the patient's family members wanting the update, and the nurses page them most of the time for patient issues! That's a lot to juggle!!
RNBytheBay I totally agree with that! Also I think neurosurgeons have would have a high rate because they hold the quality of ones life in their hands. They also work extremely long hours and their residency is SEVEN years.
Psychiatrists must empathize with their patients in order to understand the problems they need to solve. They also have a very low success rate in curing these people. Another issue with this is their psychological understanding makes them assess everyone in their life. They read minute mannerisms that go unnoticed by others and it is damaging to personal relationships. You are educated enough that this should be common sense to you.
"low success rate" is a bit unfair. They, like internal medics, manage a slew of chronic health issues. For them success is probably more defined in seeing their patients achieve sociability, daily functionality and prevent acute relapses (i.e. small successes vs large ones like "curing" ; which we don't even know is completely possible in mental health as we are yet unaware of the complete neurology of it). The small amount of psychiatrists I know switch off from work really well; they are probably analysing us but they never let it ruin a round of drinks! In fact some of them say their insight is what reminds them to keep connected to family and friends.
Psychiatrists do not have a low success rate, several psych meds have been proven more effective than meds for cholesterol or blood pressure. Psychiatrists just manage chronic illnesses. Also psychiatrists actually have the least burn out among medical specialties. Highest suicide rates are actually male anesthesiologists, highest burn out rate is ED docs.
They should have RUclips awards for best content ! Dr.Parker would defo get on in this category, and deserved to, especially compared to some of the bs content on RUclips hitting views. *AHEM* "jake Paul" ....
Another interesting point made in the article was that med students and residents are more likely to screen positive for symptom of depression. Most physicians that I've spoken to say that residency was hell for them. I wonder if a lot of students and residents don't realize that it will get better one day and that sense of hopelessness is what drives them to suicidal behavior.
This is definitely an interesting topic. I’m also in medicine (surgical field) and have reflected on this throughout my medical school education and training. Doctors are human beings, but undoubtedly offer a significant service to humanity. They work hard, sacrifice much, but are also often rewarded relatively well-both financially and with social respect and gratitude. Yet, burn out remains high and suicide rates are alarmingly high. As you mentioned, Dr. Buck, this is especially true for psychiatrists. I have come to realize one thing as undoubtedly true through my journey: nothing in your career, relationships, or hobbies can truly fill the void that many people feel in their life. These things often provide temporary dopamine surges, but will always fail to completely fill what could be described as an “eternal void.”
This is where I’ll likely lose many readers, however I’m convinced that it is true. As a previous and admitted agnostic, I used my acquired knowledge to justify my lack of faith. The need for evidence was natural, as it is for many physicians. During training, I often found myself suffering from what I believed was depression despite having everything I could have dreamed of: loving family, supportive peers, acceptance to medical school, sufficient scores on exams, etc. Yet, I still found myself feeling empty at some level. To keep a long story short, I had a life changing experience that I couldn’t even begin to explain to myself or others and consequently found my faith in God. With this faith and understanding of myself, I unknowingly (at least initially) developed a sense of purpose that none of the other things in life ever provided and that eternal void was filled with the only thing that could ever fill an eternal void.
I am not intending to be bible thumping or the “weird Christian,” but I want to explain to others why I feel physicians are so afflicted despite a rewarding profession, a depth of knowledge that supersedes most professions, and socioeconomic security. Physicians are logical by nature. Because of this, it is no surprise that we emphasize the importance of evidence. But it is clear that despite this approach, we fail (read: commit suicide) significantly more than others. When I was on my psychiatric rotation (agnostic at the time) I remember saying to myself, “there is no amount of medication or counseling that is going to completely turn this patient’s life around.” I didn’t know exactly why I thought this, but I had a feeling that they had lost their sense of purpose in life. Medicine is based on certain objective truths. We do a great job of identifying, correlating, and sometimes preventing or correcting the objective findings of disease. But medicine is not intended to, nor ever been able to, provide individual purpose in ones life. I believe at a very fundamental (and perhaps unconscious) level, no one recognizes this more than a psychiatrist.
Whether you’re a believe or not, it’s something to ponder-even if it’s simply from an objective perspective.
Remember that we must take care of ourselves in order to take care of others.

Excellent comment...reason seems to say life is godless and indifferent? Hope aims for real progress toward what? immortality? just a choice in the end for our species to continue or perish...do think our species has a destiny beyond extinction...hope so as an atheist struggled with crushing depression, resentment, etc hope persists for now and hopefully as long as fate has planned for.
This is spot on. Environmental exposure is so important in life. So people who are constantly around depressed people are more likely to become depressed themselves. Also, I'm extremely happy I chose Radiology as a specialty compared to some of the others out there like surgery. I know how hard you guys work and the crazy hours and I'm not jealous one bit lol

During my 2 Psych Rotations some of the things these patients have gone through are unimaginable. I feel you have to be at complete zen or Grounded in Some religion "even if your not religious" to be a psychiatrist.
I have the study coarse and I would recommend it to any freshman in college who is pre med. I didn't know how to study and this is a great course and I've wished I had it 15 years ago as I be a MD today instead of taking classes in my 40s tp hopefully be a medical student at 43.

People commit suicide when they consistently do something that doesn’t seem to give them any positive results back which will cause them to get into a state of depression. Psychiatrists deal with this on the daily as there is no one method fits all in psychiatry, which will always give you the same result back, compared to every other field in medicine. Every patient is different and the condition is relative to every human being. That’s the beauty of the field as well. Unfortunately I don’t think our medical field is advanced enough to truly know how to help these patients. That is something we really have to try to fix and urgently have more people with a strong interest to help alleviate mental disorders to enter this field. Psychiatrists are just taught to mostly give out medication A to patient with B mental disorder, although medications, a LOT of the time aren’t the answer to every mental disorder. They aren’t taught more effective and versatile measures of helping these people. We need more research in the field to do so and therefore more interested people in the field.
psychiatry is such a vastly undiscovered field and our psychology is what affects every aspect of our lives and it’s a shame that medical schools don’t emphasize the importance of it. In another video you talked about deaths that happened in your profession as a surgeon which is well expected. Why aren’t medical students psychologically prepared for stuff like this? Why isnt it as crucial to teach coping mechanisms and psychological well-being to doctors who represent and teach well-being to patients as it is to know the basics of our physiological processes? I think the medical field that deserves attention is psychiatry because I truly believe that the worst thing you can live with is a mental disorder, as I know people who have the mundane pain of living worse than somebody who just had their leg chopped off, which can be fixed using surgical technique and the physical pain can be alleviated. Mental pain can not be so simply alleviated at all compared to standard techniques used to fix such painful physical deformities and injuries. But what is it about the root of mental pain which makes it so much more unbearable for somebody to live another day on this earth compared to somebody who has a part of their body chopped off? This is an urgent and crucial question psychiatrists should actively seek to answer. This is why I want to pursue psychiatry one day, in the hopes of helping these seemingly helpless people.

I really love psychiatry, learning about the conditions and having in depth conversations with people and trying to see the world from their eyes it appeals to me a lot. But im also quite emotional, i can internalize stress when i need to (like if the patient was infront of me for example) but im worried if i go into that field I'll end up thinking about my patients and getting upset when im at home. Especially since the treatment is long term and has a low success rate there might not be as many happy days as there are sad. Love your videos by the way! It's extremely refreshing to see your honesty, which is something we need to hear. I dont like how other doctors sugar coat things because that isnt useful. This is the only medic channel ive subscribed too (I did it after only 5 minutes of watching your content)

Hey this is very real and you are very real. I've worked in an ophthalmologist clinic in Houston medical center and prior to working there I had very negative preconceived notions regarding the personalities of med students, residents and physicians, but little did I know. I WAS DEAD FUCKING WRONG!. Sure some are arrogant but that doesn't speak volumes about doctors, it simply shows me that their are shitty people everywhere in all aspects of life. One of my doctors that just left the practice is an oculoplastic surgeon and she sees so much potential for me to become a doctor that I never knew existed and I feel honored and being in this environment has totally changed what I want to do with my life. Before this I wanted to be on Broadway, yes I know it's cliché but I'm gay and talented so sue me, but even when talking to the residents and med students they sit down with me and mentor me. I have learned so much not because they schooled me like I was some child but because they showed me that they put their pants on one leg at a time. SO I THANK YOU FOR THIS AND SO DO ALL THE YOUNG ADULTS THAT ARE LEANING TOWARD SOME ASPECT OF THE MEDICAL FIELD. My understanding was Anesthesiologists had the highest rate. Them and marines. My dad was both. He was honorable, good at his job and badass. He ended his life in 1993.

Jeremy, once I said psychiatry was easy because the physical work is few, and they doesn't have life threatening emergencys...but a resident told me I was wrong. Maybe psychiatry is physically easy but mentally is really hard, you will need to go to another psychiatry frequently, also you will need to really separate work from personal life, but that's not always easy if you work with emotions.

One thing I think your analysis missed is that people who self selected for psychiatry likely have pre-existing trauma that made them want to go into the field. Research has shown that psychiatrists will have some of their own issues come to light via work with their patients.

Attorneys also have a high suicide rate. I know of three criminal defense attorneys who've committed suicide within two years of each other. I believe that some people who've been 'broken' grow up to help others but because of never seeking counseling themselves, they become broken more so and either ruin or take their own lives or others'.

Psychiatry is interesting...Thomas Szasz, a famous "anti-psychiatry" thought it was a problems in living, existential problem...life is hard, some people get dealt unlucky hands, pessimistic personality traits & or terrible environments...as for psychiatrist the late Thomas Szasz and Jordan Petersen lol sure there are other top YT psychologists/psychiatrists....just a min wage worker in a fruit cannery myself, not successful as far as money... assuming those hacks are aimed for medical students or anyone that wants to learn better (goes to click link...)

A lot of people learn some of the things you talk about later in life OR through smart mentors, father/father figure. To Many people that don’t have these people in their life; your videos are a beacon of light in the dark fog of despair. Seriously, these videos can help a TON of smart but disadvantaged teens who don’t know anything and don’t have anyone around to teach them.

Professionals tend to gravitate to work where they have most experience. Psych's tend to have some similiar weaknesses with SSRI needs and underestimate their own therapeutic solutions. I have personal experience to verify this assumption. My Psych Dr. used to even give his Dog SSRI's, but he was a very cool guy.

Totally agree with you. Physiatrists have a lot problems of their own and then to top it up with other people’s issues weighing heavy on their mind is a lot to handle. Some people would probably say it’s their jobs to help others cope issues and recover from traumatic experiences and they cannot cope with issues themselves. However, we have to think of how humans behave and the fact that yes because we are humans we are capable of feeling others pain and it can become overwhelming. 🤔 GREAT VIDEO coming from a senior in college that is pursuing medicine!!!
Yep you’re videos are helpful have no doubt I’m 19 want to be a doctor been positively influenced by your videos not only are they just simply entertaining but have good practical advice that’s helped me get a clearer picture of what I want my future to look like which has been a stressful thing for me. It's actually male anesthesiologists with highest suicide rates...being male and having access to lethal means increases risk for suicide. Also, states with more lax gun laws have significantly higher suicide rates
