I used to coach at Hopman Academy in the late 90’s and early 2000’s when Marcelo came through to train with his coach Louis Lobo. He was a very cool, low key guy. Quiet and reserved but easy to get along with. Hell of a player and made his opponents have to think a lot due to his ability to change ball direction so well. He, unfortunately, came along when the players were getting taller and just naturally bigger. He had to work harder in training to to keep up with players who could take two less steps to reach a ball. It wears on the body and especially the back. Just my take on his situation having been in the tennis training business for so long.

My back hurts from having to carry a ball machine now instead of my doubles partner

He injured his back and knee. That’s why he retired. He was only 26.

Rios and Nalbandian will go in the top 5 most talented tennis players in history to never win a grand slam. I remember watching Rios, such a joy to watch he will be playing shots with such difficulty like nothing. He will have matches with pure brilliance than lose to some player only 1/4th the talent. Federer and Safin used to admire Rios as well, but they also knew Rios relied on pure talent and not hard work. In the end, Rios can be happy with world #1 but honestly, if he had a better attitude I think he could have won at least 5-8 grand slams.

This is a poorly covered "uncovered" series because it skimmed the surface of the awesome talent that is Marcelo "El Chino" Rios. The people who decided to create, approve this should seriously consider another field because this is not high quality reporting. How the hell can you forget what was at the time, a monumental achievement and world record of winning three clay master series in one year????
And the most egregious mistake?? YOU DIDNT MENTION AT ALL THE TRAVESTY THAT WE EXPERIENCED WHEN PETR KORDA CHEATED AT THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN FINAL BY DOPING HIS WAY THROUGH AND NOT GETTING HIS SLAM TAKEN AWAY AND RIGHTFULLY GIVEN TO MARCEL RIOS!
But this makes sense, because the ATP made this video and didn't want to sully their reputation as an "ethically run" organization. What a joke. Learn from HBO. At least they're legit.

And HOW IN THE WORLD DID THESE KNUCKLEHEADS AT ATP FORGET TO INTERVIEW FEDERER (he said Marcelo was an inspiration to his game), AGASSI, CHANG, or RODDICK (who played an exhibition with him in Chile)??????? PREPOSTEROUS AND RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

+doxg12 it was Enqvist the one who said if he had to pay for just 1 guy to return to play, he would pay tickets for watching only Rios?
Federer even said he would vote for Rios to get into the Hall of Fame. Kournikova also said she grew watching Rios and he was her main inspiration. Mr Williams (father of the famous Williams' girls) said Rios' talent was a gift from God. So many guys has spoken only wonderful things about Marcelo's playing.
Marcelo destroyed everyone as well in the senior circuit (sure, he was young but he had his back problems still), so much that McEnroe pressured to rise the age for retired guys to play, cause Rios was just massacring him.
