How do you make Marcelo Rios laugh? We found out in the most unlikely of ways, when our interview was interrupted by an un-invited gate-crasher from the skies.
Wow I'm glad Rios is more light hearted with also a sense of humour now. Maybe it's because he is a father now and he is playing in the vetrans tour. One of my all time favourite players!
Totally agreed, i'm from Chile and i've meet Manuel Astorga (Rios Physical trainer on 96, 97, 98) and when Rios was 14, they know that he wasn't able to play Professional tennis, but he did, ending his carrer at 24 years old...
It makes me laugh when guys say, "he never won a GS." Fabrice Santoro summed it up best when he said, "5 sets for 2 weeks - too tough for him." Rios lacked the physical strength & conditioning of other players at the time, & I could be wrong here, but my bet is that this big limitation that he had can be traced back to his childhood. This is hugely significant, but people don't get it. He won his matches almost purely on talent to compensate for the mentioned deficiency. One of the greatest.
I miss and everybody will miss this greath player Rios. He was one of the best tennis player in the world ... Players come and go ... tennis is changing ... this is the beauty of this game ...I love this game ....
@robinho1979 Totally agree with you. Can't over-regret that he never has exploited the whole of his potentional and never had won a Grand Slam. He and Arazi were two biggest talents on tour in late 90's. He could do everything with every shot he imagined. Once, in compacq Grand Slam cup against Agassi, he served out over 20 aces, had played smash sitting on the ground. e was player with lot of feel even on his volleys, slice, every shot...
Good analysis. Agreed. It's unfortunate how the game is now greatly based on power and has lost a great deal of touch. Tennis players are only becoming stronger. I wonder if somebody like Rios will be able to compete on the ATP tour in the future.
Hi. I think there is a huge difference in speed and fitness between the players like Moya (who retired recently) in hisearly 30s to guys over 50. It is no wonder that Moya creamed everyone this year. The difference between 20-30 is far smaller than 30-40. There should be 2 levels: 35-45 & 45+. Rios killed everyone when he joined this league. He was younger.
rios had the physical strength! i mean, he looks liek a guy who was in a gang for 20 years. he was just laisy, but he had everything. and he started playing tennis with eleven, which is very late, and proves his talent. how could he win indian wells, key biscaine in row and become number 1 without physical strength?
@Nigelxman I don't think he has changed like literally. I think when he was trying to make a career out of himself, he probably felt the pressure and hence why he came across as an asshole. But now that he can just relax, I think that competitive flare he had, has slowed down a bit, allowing him to just be more happy.
Reporter says arrogantly... "It's the best interview of your life " A-hole reporter..new world order scum... Rios was one of the greatest players.. treat him with respect... A-HOLE.!
Wow, I guess some people DO change. I loved watching Rios play in his heyday but back then he came off as such a complete and utter dickhead and one of the most unliked guys in the locker room. He seems much nicer and friendlier now that he's off the tour.
My favorite player of all time. Amazing talent. He really does seem more relaxed and positive now, wow. His english has also improved ALOT
Wow I'm glad Rios is more light hearted with also a sense of humour now. Maybe it's because he is a father now and he is playing in the vetrans tour. One of my all time favourite players!

he was one of the three most naturally talented tennis players I ever saw (MacEnroe and Agassi) but he couldn't get out of his own way often enough.
most of his problems came from injuries and lack of mental strength in grand slams, but that aside I'd say he was slightly more talented than agassi.
yeah his career was short because he sufered a lot of injuries since 1999 to 2004, some of them were chronic injuries
