I'm a veterinary surgeon by trade. One thing Ive learned is never to under estimate the human animal bond. A psychologist once lectured at a cancer therapy conference I attended many years ago and she said this bond is often all some people have because of previous failed human relationships. It was a very `telling' insight and it made me realize we are helping people as well as their pets. It's the unconditional love of the dog or cat that people crave. Whereas we may fail each other God is that unconditional love for us even before we ever existed.

My vocation was blocked by being unable to separate from my elderly cats. But, other issues had also come into play. But yes the love for a pet is very pure.

Fr. Columba, I loved this video message. I've often pondered these same thoughts, reflecting on the love I have for my pets (esp. my 2 cats). For years, I've wondered if I could love my pets too much, and have asked myself if my pets had become idols. I decided the answer is no, because I believe that God has a way of sending me His love and care through my pets sometimes. This has made me love God all the more, in a tangible way. When my dogs and cats give me affection, I always say a grateful prayer to God for showing me His love in a way that I can feel. When I touch their fur, hear their purrs, and other such lovely moments spent with them, I truly feel that is just one more way that God expresses His love for me. This has made my faith journey even stronger.
Please pray for me Father.. i have always had cats, and recently adopted two kittens, after my last adult cat passed. I have developed moderate allergies to one or both. I never had allergies prior. Me and my family have bonded to these 2 little guys and hate the thought of having to abandon them back to a shelter, not knowing if or who would adopt them after us. Please pray God will remove allergies to them, so i can continue to give them a safe, loving home! All glory and love to God. Amen.

I rescued a cat years ago from an owner with severe bipolar. I used to let it hide away from him. It somehow attached to me. When he was evicted I kept the cat and that cat adored me so much I couldn't believe it, so I was just looking to give it a better life but the cat was grateful and let me know that in so many ways. She was a little tabby just like yours was 20 when she died.

BTW I have one rescued cat, from outside on my street and it took months of coaxing now she is in doors and still goes out to survey her domain. But now there are more very hungry, strays. I am 70 and must work. It's a dilemma........
Awwww Claire is so cute and the unconditional love these little animals give to your heart, emotions and soul. Animals do bring healing and comfort to many people and love even humor with the silly things they do! My family and I have always had animals in our home and lives dogs, cats, ducks, geese, chickens, horse's, lizards, hampsters etc. I could not imagine my life without animals at least a dog or cat. It's funny, when I started adoration, (some years ago) I didn't know what to do, what to think, what to pray, but didn't really get too anxious about it, I mean there's lots of literature in the church foyer....and I managed to stumble about ....but honestly I have never thought of thinking of Him Present as a lamb. Thanks. Reminds me of that cute photo of Jesus taken by Blessed Father Charles De Foucaulde It's true, even growing up I liked and had affection for cats than I did for my brothers and sisters, who were, after all, sources of torment now and then. But if a kitten or cat tormented me, I knew it was my fault.
He wants to be affectionately HELD by us. This is the realisation that can help those of us who struggle with scrupulousity around receiving Communion on the tongue. I'm sure someone will need to hear that. ~Matt 💜💙🖤💙💜

I haven't watched the video yet but I want to share something that happened a few days ago. In another video of yours I talked about the fact that I didn't feel God's love. I knew it intellectually but didn't feel it in my heart. That I was starved for love but also His love. Later that night, I felt inspired to be silent and in the dark and just listen. Mother Mary brought Him to me. She brought Jesus to me and He told me He loved me and I started crying. A lot! Feeling really sorry for my sins and how I've betrayed Him and how I'm not good enough to love, anyway. And in my mind, I started to see Jesus cradling me like a child and soothing me and pretty much trying to get me to go to sleep. I layed like that for a few minutes, crying and then getting myself back together. But I think this is what helps me to build affection for Him. To see myself as a child with Him and sometimes to remember what He went through during the Passion..like, How would I feel if it was my son or my sister or my dad. I suppose asking to feel compassion for His Passion is also a good idea.
Pray a novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus starting June 7, with the intention of a rained-out baseball game on June 16 in Los Angeles, and the conversion of sinners.
Thank you for your videos. They are great, very insightful. This is well explained and I like your analogies. May I comment that we have to be careful with “feelings” in regards to LOVE. We may or may not have emotions or feelings but that does not mean we are not loving someone. Many people think that if the emotions and feelings are absent then we’re not loving. I know I did for years. It also led me to think I was unloved. Love is actually an action and a choice. It is service. The highest form of love is AGAPE LOVE which is the love that God has for us. Simply put-it’s that immeasurable, unconditional love that always gives whether the love is returned or not. The goal is not to love in order to be loved, but to love regardless and in our case, to love for God’s sake. We must consider that Jesus LOVES us with that infinite AGAPE LOVE that cannot be measured by feelings or emotions. Jesus will always LOVE us no matter how many sins we have (though He is also justice and so we cannot get to Heaven without Confession and repentance/penance). So when in mental prayer and picturing yourself with the Baby Jesus for example, and picturing how much Jesus longs to be held and loved by you as Fr. said, do not be deterred if you are not moved by emotions or feelings. Most likely you will but if not, just your sheer effort and desire to love Jesus more and ACCEPT HIS LOVE (as Fr. said) is pleasing to Jesus and constantly tell Him you love Him and wish to love Him more. Constantly thank Him for loving you and dying for YOU. Tell Him you open your heart to Him and ask Him to clean it out of any residue from your sins and worldly attachments to make space for His LOVE. Believe me, your love will grow and you WILL know it by the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit in your heart. And your willingness to do more for LOVE of Jesus to make Him happy which is usually by serving others without complaint (loving your neighbor) But with or without consolation, ask for the Gift of Knowledge so that you KNOW God’s LOVE for you and you will be at peace. Also, the more ww receive Jesus in the Eucharist, the more we become like Him. And He IS LOVE. Therefore we will grow in love. Jesus Meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like unto Thine. Our Lady of Good Success, help us.
I've always referred to my cats as love letters from God. I thank him for the gift of his small creatures and give God all the credit and love for the many gifts that he blesses us with. That in itself has drawn me to my affection and Love for our Lord our God!❤
I lost my parents before I was 30. My brother when I was 6. I love my Catholic faith because we pray for animals. St. Francis. I never married. Worked for the stock market and didn’t care about people. When my vet thought my dog had leukemia I broke down and said the rosary non stop for three days. My dog did not have leukemia but an infection. It was through that ordeal that I experience a tiny bit of what parents experience when their child takes ill. I felt more compassion for people and their children.
Note#2: the analogies provide a powerful message! I have a gold cat, He is not Egyptian. he has one attribute of a fish and a Roman: like a gold fish, he will gorge himself and like a Roman, regurgitate and go back for more 😢
Only last week I pulled a tick out of me which I probably got from my cat. But that doesnt make me love my cat less. We can compare that to God. Even when we committ sins he doesnt love us less.😅

"This natural affection of the heart...." It's funny, when I started adoration, (some years ago) I didn't know what to do, what to think, what to pray, but didn't really get too anxious about it, I mean there's lots of literature in the church foyer....and I managed to stumble about ....but honestly I have never thought of thinking of Him Present as a lamb. Thanks. Reminds me of that cute photo of Jesus taken by Blessed Father Charles De Foucaulde
It's true, even growing up I liked and had affection for cats than I did for my brothers and sisters, who were, after all, sources of torment now and then. But if a kitten or cat tormented me, I knew it was my fault.

I haven't watched the video yet but I want to share something that happened a few days ago. In another video of yours I talked about the fact that I didn't feel God's love. I knew it intellectually but didn't feel it in my heart. That I was starved for love but also His love. Later that night, I felt inspired to be silent and in the dark and just listen. Mother Mary brought Him to me. She brought Jesus to me and He told me He loved me and I started crying. A lot! Feeling really sorry for my sins and how I've betrayed Him and how I'm not good enough to love, anyway. And in my mind, I started to see Jesus cradling me like a child and soothing me and pretty much trying to get me to go to sleep. I layed like that for a few minutes, crying and then getting myself back together. But I think this is what helps me to build affection for Him. To see myself as a child with Him and sometimes to remember what He went through during the Passion..like, How would I feel if it was my son or my sister or my dad. I suppose asking to feel compassion for His Passion is also a good idea.
I do not have the means to donate right now, but I will give prayers until I do!

Thank you for your videos. They are great, very insightful. This is well explained and I like your analogies. May I comment that we have to be careful with “feelings” in regards to LOVE. We may or may not have emotions or feelings but that does not mean we are not loving someone. Many people think that if the emotions and feelings are absent then we’re not loving. I know I did for years. It also led me to think I was unloved. Love is actually an action and a choice. It is service. The highest form of love is AGAPE LOVE which is the love that God has for us. Simply put-it’s that immeasurable, unconditional love that always gives whether the love is returned or not. The goal is not to love in order to be loved, but to love regardless and in our case, to love for God’s sake. We must consider that Jesus LOVES us with that infinite AGAPE LOVE that cannot be measured by feelings or emotions. Jesus will always LOVE us no matter how many sins we have (though He is also justice and so we cannot get to Heaven without Confession and repentance/penance). So when in mental prayer and picturing yourself with the Baby Jesus for example, and picturing how much Jesus longs to be held and loved by you as Fr. said, do not be deterred if you are not moved by emotions or feelings. Most likely you will but if not, just your sheer effort and desire to love Jesus more and ACCEPT HIS LOVE (as Fr. said) is pleasing to Jesus and constantly tell Him you love Him and wish to love Him more. Constantly thank Him for loving you and dying for YOU. Tell Him you open your heart to Him and ask Him to clean it out of any residue from your sins and worldly attachments to make space for His LOVE.
Believe me, your love will grow and you WILL know it by the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit in your heart. And your willingness to do more for LOVE of Jesus to make Him happy which is usually by serving others without complaint (loving your neighbor) But with or without consolation, ask for the Gift of Knowledge so that you KNOW God’s LOVE for you and you will be at peace. Also, the more ww receive Jesus in the Eucharist, the more we become like Him. And He IS LOVE. Therefore we will grow in love.
Jesus Meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like unto Thine. Our Lady of Good Success, help us.

I've always referred to my cats as love letters from God. I thank him for the gift of his small creatures and give God all the credit and love for the many gifts that he blesses us with. That in itself has drawn me to my affection and Love for our Lord our God!❤

I lost my parents before I was 30. My brother when I was 6. I love my Catholic faith because we pray for animals. St. Francis. I never married. Worked for the stock market and didn’t care about people. When my vet thought my dog had leukemia I broke down and said the rosary non stop for three days. My dog did not have leukemia but an infection. It was through that ordeal that I experience a tiny bit of what parents experience when their child takes ill. I felt more compassion for people and their children.

I have a gold cat, He is not Egyptian. he has one attribute of a fish and a Roman: like a gold fish, he will gorge himself and like a Roman, regurgitate and go back for more 😢
Thats a hard ask
Only last week I pulled a tick out of me which I probably got from my cat. But that doesnt make me love my cat less. We can compare that to God. Even when we committ sins he doesnt love us less.😅
