Yes, 183 laps in the lead without ever winning is unfair when 1961 world champion Phil Hill lead 171 laps in total in his entire F1 career. Jackie Stewart considered Chris Amon "One of the three best drivers I ever raced against." Always in the wrong team at the wrong time. I'm surprised the mentioned Italy 1971 when Canada 1968 (72 laps lead in grand style only to retire with gearbox issues) and France 1972 (was cruising to an easy victory when a puncture forced him to pit and rejoin in 8th, still finished a great 3rd). He was still proving his talent and speed in the 1976 Swedish GP when he qualified an Ensign(!) 3rd while Lauda qualified his Ferrari in 5th and James Hunt his McLaren 8th. In the race itself Amon held 4th with his Ensign for 37 laps and Lauda couldn't get past him and was stuck in 5th (driving a much faster Ferrari) for all those 37 laps until Amon retired with technical mishaps. Anyways, he won the 1966 LeMans with Bruce McLaren. No matter what Hollywood tries to convince people it was Dan Gurney who sailed off into the distant lead with his Ford GT40 while the other Fords were told to "stand back and not give chase". When Gurney retired from the lead with merely 4 hours to go Amon wanted to race Ken Miles for the win but was ordered to "hold position". Had he been able to do so I have little doubt he'd catch him and win in great style. Instead Miles crossed the line first but McLaren/Amon won the race by virtue of having traveled a longer distance. Nobody but the French organizers knew of this rule at the time. While manufactured Hollywood drama will tell you Miles would have won it easily it's false. Gurney was slated to win easily when his car broke down and Amon and Bruce McLaren were preventing from racing Miles/Hulme. Back in 1999, my friend and I decided that any driver who stood in for the regular driver would be known as a "Salo-man"
He even had his own song - Macho man by the Village people but we Salo in place of Macho.
Jean Alesi lost about 50 maiden wins.
Pretty fishy that the algorithm suggested this video a week after Lando bottled his maiden win 🤔
My thoughts exactly
Russell, Charles and Damon
Hill still hurts a lot ....
Recommending this after Norris missed out yesterday is absolutely savage
Surely Lando Norris now comes at No1 with Alex Albon (Austria 2020) featuring. Thats now all 4 drivers of the Twitch gen losing their maiden victories 💔
What a coincidence that this video is recommended after the chaos in sochi
Damon Hill was leading the previous race at Silverstone as well before his engine failed so he was cruelly denied a maiden win twice in two races. Fortunately, he went on to win the next three races after Germany so he didn't have to dwell too long on the near misses.
The one time the tires were actually wrong it wasnt Hamilton at the wheel, it was George xD
Do top 10 f1 drivers who almost lost the championship
Well 3 out of 10 were finns. That must tell something of our luck :D
3:21 Damon’s car got literally covered in oil
I nearly cried when Charles said there is something strange with the engine
Norris should’ve had his first f1 win even if the team called him into the pits early and get him out ahead of Hamilton then a win would be his
This being recommended after Sochi 2021 is just pain.
So 3 drivers lost a maiden win in their 2 race for Ferrari (saló, leclerc, Johansson).
What a beautiful sound.
*George Russell Left The Chat*
You could see Hill covered with Villeneuve's oil. Look at their rear spoilers when they are on the same shot
That came out sounding like something other than intended.
Wow, the algorithm kicked in quickly today! Who's here after Sochi 2021?!
I miss Hakkinen failure in the last lap of the Spanish GP 2001
I think we all know George didn't have a puncture at the Sakhir GP
1993. very beautiful Cars. That was machst First season watching F1
Going to have to add Norris to this list now
Update: Norris, Sochi 2021
Lando Norris: let me introduce myself
Having this video recommended when Lando Norris JUST lost his maiden win... How suspicious RUclips algorithm
I misread the title as top 10 f1 drivers who lost a win and thought that Danny Ric 2016 will come there but I read that again and then I realised
Check out häkkinen 2001 at Barcelona then.
@@Mongorat 2000 I think you mean. But yeah, surprising that this "last lap engine blow-up" (2 corners to the finish actually) isn't mentionned.
@@maxouf1 because this is maiden victories, not just any victory
@@maxouf1 MrDahl is right, that was 2001. Though he also lost a potential win in the 2000 US Grand Prix due to car failure. And another earlier in the season in Brazil. And the race right before that in Australia...
@@maxouf1 no. It was Barcelona 2001 when his engine blew up during the last lap.
Where is monaco 1984 when senna lost his maiden win when the race got canceled because of the heavy rain? That was an epic race that would have give his maiden win if had continued for a couple of laps, it should definitively be on this list
Here after the 2021 Russian GP.
Who knew Sochi could produce such emotions.
