I come back frequently to listen to this piece and always marvel at what the musician has accomplished. The 2024 Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition has just ended with 12 superb finalists who gave it their all to present their best interpretations of Ballade. I didn’t know until recently that this competition was known previously as the Ysaye Competition, being renamed after his death, so it was fitting that all the participants be called upon to do an Ysaye composition. Ballade is perhaps not the most difficult of the six sonatas even though all sonatas are indeed difficult, but it reflects Ysaye’s deep affection and respect for the lyricism, creativity and consummate skill of his friend and dedicatee, George Enescu. I found a quote from Ysaye in one of the older published articles that he had “let his imagination run wild” when he composed this piece. I took that to mean that the musician has the discretion and freedom to paint on a large or small musical canvas without going astray of the composer’s intention, i.e. a wide range of interpretations are valid so long as the musician can retain the composition’s integrity as a ballad. Maxim Vengerov’s interpretation which might be characterized as starting in a claustrophobic space before finally successfully scaling a height seems to be one that a number of musicians, including many at this recent competition, have adopted. I enjoyed every interpretation by the 12 finalists and I appreciated the effort made. Ballade repeatedly exposes the soloist in its demands - orchestral sound in some parts followed by unforgiving technical virtuosity in others. It can be exhausting. Chloe paints on a huge musical canvas, eliciting a wide variety of emotions from the listener in the process. She does not stop until the last bow stroke, and then at least for me, I saw her completed work.
Pardon my ignorance but I didn't know this piece actually has some legit structure to it, which I can hear in her performance and appreciate. I thought it was more "contemporary."

While I agree that this is a stupendous and astonishing performance, I am fairly confident that it was not given live. It is taken from a video featuring Chloe and Christian Li, in their capacity as the 2018 junior Menuhin Competition joint winners, the premiere of which was streamed on 18 May at the 2021 competition in the US, which had to be held "virtually" because of the pandemic. Chloe was in Singapore; Christian was in Australia. They must have pre-recorded their own videos and submitted them to Menuhin, who then put them together for the streaming. TwoSet took a look at this performance a couple of days ago in their "Violin prodigies: then vs now." So as to evaluate Chloe's progress, they also looked at her performance when she was 7 of Wieniawski's Scherzo and Tarantelle. Unusually, they speak in all seriousness. Having examined the Wieniawski in some detail, Eddy says that the Ysaye "is at the point where I almost feel I can't even comment ... I know what I am hearing is amazing but it is at the point where I'd say I don't even know how she is doing what she is doing."
This is such a good rendition. It really resonates with my emotions and brings forth memories of being in nature -- the harsh beauty and the small but unstoppable dramas that unfold there.
Ok I’ve been listening to this interpretation since day 1. BUT ONE THING I REALIZED, at least after hearing all of the versions I can find so far, no one, I REPEAT NO ONE, has nailed the ending in terms of being in tune and not sounding crunchy. Chloe is by far the most musical and most skilled violinist I’ve ever seen! ❤❤❤ and she’s so sweet too!! Keep it up Chloe!
I agree. Chloe's musicality is second to none. Her most recent masterpiece is Tchaikovsky's Meditation, sadly hidden away on the Copenhagen Summer Festival channel. The depth and sophistication of the performance is staggering.
I don't think it's a competition, but I do believe Hadelich's interpretation may manage something similar, on the chance you haven't heard it; and while clarity matters, texture is still a tool in any string player's arsenal. It can be abused in certain cases, sure; but even Chua herself utilizes with those finale double-stops. If pristine clarity is what you're looking for, then Hahn also plays the ending very well, too. That said, this is already among my favorite performances (even above the usual suspects). Hadelich uses the same notes to tell a very convincing story that is worth hearing as well. This is the second performance that I've heard to make sense of the piece as a whole; pretty incredible.
@@Missingo32 Hadelich is an excellent violinist of course, but I find his performance mannered; it lacks the momentum and overall cohesion of Chloe's performance. (The clarity he gains is at too high a price.) I am _really_ surprised that you esteem Hahn's ending. It is by far the worst part of her performance. The lack of drive and drop of tempo is disastrous. Talk about an anti-climax!
@@Missingo32 PS Ehnes' CD of the complete set is Gramophone's "editor's choice," and it helped him win their Artist of the Year in 2021. The performance of Ballade on it (available on YT) falls short of Chloe's.
A simply stunning Ysaye! The musicality she approaches this sonata with is amazing, she really brings out each sound and infuses them with feeling. An incredibly mature interpretation! Very beautifully performed, really one of my favourite performances of this sonata.
I just listened to this performance as I am very familiar with this piece and for some time Vengerov was my favorite but I must say am extremely impressed with this and so much different than Maxim's but extraordinary nonetheless. Hmm, this might be my new favorite.

I always found this piece unpleasant to listen to, because it came out as a show-off, omg look at my chords and my string crossings, kind of stuff. But you gave it emotion, musicality. Probably what Ysaye himself wrote it for. It's a sonata, not an étude or a caprice, after all. Wonderful work, Chloe. Brava!

So as to evaluate Chloe's progress, they also looked at her performance when she was 7 of Wieniawski's Scherzo and Tarantelle.
Chloe never fails to make me cry ㅠㅠ
For a history... Of... Legend of .. Chloe .. the cleanest... Playing..in future... I'm commenting ❤️
The fastest 6:39min of my entire life. Superb!
The way she plays this is so distinct, in unfolds in such lovely ways and almost sounds like Bach or Stravinsky at times
Everyone go home, Ling Ling has been found.
Seriously, that's so beautiful. I have no words.
Within the first 30 seconds, I already had goosebumps.
Best recording of Ballade!
My God, that was beautiful! What an astounding accomplishment!
Every time I listen to this breathtaking performance it leaves me speechless. Absolutely fantastic!
A definite sign of her artistic maturity.
The acoustics in that recording room are incredible -- and even more incredibly, she makes the goddamn most of it
You are our maestro for this generation and many more generations to come…. Bravooooo Maestro Chloe ❤🎉
It's her world we're just living in it
When anyone else plays this piece it sounds ugly but with Chloe I’ve had this on repeat for the entire past week.
Another violin piece I would otherwise not know, save for the work and beautiful playing of Ms. Chua. Thank you.
i got goosebumps from just listening to it for 2 minutes 🤯🤯
Same, replying to bring you back to the awesome piece
You just nailed that, Chloé. Cheers from Belgium.
Incredibly sharp, bright and flowy ..damn out of this world
This is such a good rendition. It really resonates with my emotions and brings forth memories of being in nature -- the harsh beauty and the small but unstoppable dramas that unfold there.
TwoSetViolin and Chloe are the reason why i become a classical music lover.
My self esteem...
But seriously damn she is truly ling ling
Why this video isn’t popular. Karolina Protsenko despacito has million views…
bro fr 😭😭 ppl these days don’t understand real talent
racism is real
Beautiful to listen to ❤️
素晴らしい!聴き終わったとき、爽快感が残ります。キレッキレな演奏をありがとう。
Awe inspiring performance! Could listen to this all day long :)
Best version I've ever heard!:)
I don’t even know much about violin but i can tell that this is a masterpiece 💗💗
insane texture and reverb in the room is fantastic, gorgeous tone
Oh… oh, wow. I am speechless.
Absolutely amazing!
I am mesmerized by her grace and impactful playing. This piece by the composer is stunning.

Hadelich is an excellent violinist of course, but I find his performance mannered; it lacks the momentum and overall cohesion of Chloe's performance. (The clarity he gains is at too high a price.)
I am _really_ surprised that you esteem Hahn's ending. It is by far the worst part of her performance. The lack of drive and drop of tempo is disastrous. Talk about an anti-climax!

PS Ehnes' CD of the complete set is Gramophone's "editor's choice," and it helped him win their Artist of the Year in 2021.
The performance of Ballade on it (available on YT) falls short of Chloe's.
You haven't heard Maxim Vengerov play it then!!
A simply stunning Ysaye! The musicality she approaches this sonata with is amazing, she really brings out each sound and infuses them with feeling. An incredibly mature interpretation! Very beautifully performed, really one of my favourite performances of this sonata.
Thank You Chloe, I am so grateful for all that you have done to being as accomplished as you are!
I LOVE IT! How could I not? The music is AMAZING, and it's clear she must've worked hard on this piece. KEEP IT UP!
Brava!
The result of a lot of practice and a love of music I love her playing.
Ive heard this amazing performance before and I just have to say WWWWOOOOWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful performance. Technically excellent and a very balanced game. She plays like it's easy, but it's definitely not. Very clever, beautifully and precisely played. Thank you Chloe.
Chloe is not a prodigy. Change my mind
because she is a master
Virtuoso

She has been leading the secret identity of Ling Ling for the longest time...
