Huh - that's a hell of a way to look at it. And building from that shows the contrast between Emet and the WoL - where Emet sought to reclaim his lost friend at the expense of so much else, the WoL instead internalized what Haurchefant believed in and sought to live up to those ideals. The difference between someone who lived in paradise experiencing true tragedy for the first time and one for whom loss is just a part of life.
@@ArakDBlade That's actually beautifully put, please excuse me while I start crying again. (As if this video didn't start me sobbing, I just loved them so much.)
Came here to say exactly this. When all of our friends were (presumed) dead or had disowned us, Haurchefant not only aided us but wagered his and his family's reputation on it, and he did so not only without complaint but with joy. He's the reason I'm considering moving my housing to Ishgard. In our time of greatest need, House Fortemps were our friends when there was no reason to believe they would benefit in any way.
I just want to put here a thing that I read: The good part is that now Emet-Selch is with Hythlodaeus for eternity. The bad part is that now Emet-Selch is with Hythlodaeus for eternity.
Reminds me of a fanart where the two were in the sea of stars, and Hytlodaeus was making fun of poor Emet-Selch, the latter seriously having regrets and wondering what he did to deserve that XD
@@Alissandre_Iskander Probably roasting him on how the entire time he was walking with and then fighting the WoL. He was fighting his long lost friend Azem.
I think the devs did great in design and choice of voice actor for Hythlodaeus. The delivery of voice and demeanor helps make the character give of the sense of friendliness. He comes off as likable, calm, whimsical, and all around pleasant.
"I pray we meet again, if not in this life, then perhaps another." Me: *Literally just sobbing wanting to hug them, tell them I love them, and will see them again someday.
I was totally willing to negotiate for a replacement of some of the scions, ngl. Like, I'd gladly take Hythlodaeus and Hades over Urianger, Y'shtola, and Thancred at the very least. I'd even consider the twins. But I'm keeping G'raha and Estinien.
I loved Hythlodaeus. I can totally understand why Emet was so broken by his death he recreated Amaurot and it’s citizens. He was overwhelmed by the pain of losing his friend that it affected the shade. Now we know why Emet wanted to return to the past to be with his friend once more.
Emet likely lost both his friends in short order. Given that Azem quit the Convocation in protest over the decision to summon Zodiark it is unlikely that all that much time passed between that and Hythlodaeus leaving to become part of the Zodiark summoning. In matter of what might have been days, Emet could have watched both his close friends leave him.
@@TheTriforceDragon Not only that - but during ShB he recognizes you as a fragment of the sundered Azem, and you are his greatest enemy - he must kill you to restore his world, and instead, you as a sundered fragment of one of his close friends kill him and his dream
And the shade of Hythlodaeus feels like it embodies what Emet-Selch saw in his friend. That capricious, unfettered personality. Maybe even a subconscious belief that if anyone could see beyond, grow beyond, ascend beyond the mere concept of a shade acting a role determined by someone else's will, it would by Hythlodaeus. An element of his life that was well beyond his ability to control, but well beyond his desire to be without. And one whose perspective, in that element of chaos in his life, would bring to light possible solutions that escaped Emet's own perception.
I think Graha would make a great contender to the "bestest friend" spot though. The guy was willing to do hundreds of years of work, including sacrificing himself at the end, with absolutely zero recognition, just to help the WoL. And even after all that, he still is a cinnamon roll of a catboy too humble to recognize he deserves some praise too.
What hurt the most was when Hythlodaeus explained his "purpose" to the WoL... When he said that when Azem and Emet-Selch have fulfilled their respective purposes he wished for them all to return to the star together... It hurt, when it hit me, that nothing even close to that would happen... He was imprisoned in Zodiark, Azem was sundered and Emet-Selch was doomed to live on without them... He's the nicest guy and deserves better 🥲 I so hope that the trio will reunite someday and have a happy ending
He at least ultimately got to return to the star with Emet-Selch. Will they be able to wait for Azem to join them? Perhaps. Or at least, given the way time flows differently in different realms, perhaps they'll only be a little bit older, old enough to be mentors to our reborn self.
@@mithiwithi Honestly, I think I've only died in FFXIV like 5-6 times ever outside of a raid where I get insta-rezzed because I stood in fire like an idiot (and most were because I went afk in Palace of the Dead). But next time I die, I'm going to log out for a bit to let everyone catch up.
I get the feeling that we, as Azem, Hythlodeus and Hades were all very close friends as ancients and that Hythlodeus recognised as both in Shadowbringers and Endwalker. Venat recognised we were from the future but Hythlodeus recognised our very soul. I really hope we will meet him again in the future.
IIRC it was hinted that Emet selch had a thing for Azem. Which also explains why Emet both hates our guts and is unexpected helpful. He sees us as an imperfect version of a close friend, but our soul belongs to Azem all the same
@@StoutHelm Indeed. It is strongly implied from both SHB and EDW that, as Azem had resigned their position over what amounted to a political dispute with the Convocation, only 13 of the constellation memory crystals were made. It is tacitly implied that the crystal you hold is the memories of Emet's travels with Azem during their time together, created privately in tribute to his unending respect for his comrade and dear friend. Spoilers for 6.0 MSQ Follow: I believe this is directly referenced at the end of Ultima Thule, when Emet closes his reveal of the unresolved mysteries left on Ethyris with: "As the holder of the [Title] Azem, you should consider it your duty to see that much. I know I did." His final statement provides basis for a strong inference that Emet had completed all the previously described investigations, and likely under his mission to recreate or contribute to the original experiences of his friend Azem, and in that moment fully recognizes you as one and the same people, especially with that warm, gentle smile just before he leaves.
@@Xaivius Emnet had me when he mentioned the true identity of The Twelve. I fully embraced the title of Azem, if anything, to see that mystery uncovered.
Hythlo is that friend who knows exactly which ones of your buttons to press to get the desired reaction out of you, who knows exactly how to rub you the wrong way and make you grit your teeth in frustration, and who knows perfectly well that you hate him on some level... because every time he presses one of your buttons or rubs you the wrong way, it's to provoke you into putting an effort into acting better than you probably even want to be -- because he knows that you can be better, and all he wants is for you to be your best... And that's why you also can't help loving him: Because he brings out the best in you, even when he's also kinda pissing you off.
Nah I think he knows how to balance it because he knows our buttons as well because Azem is Azem no matter his/her era and he knows anger is usually not what you want outta Azem unless you're ready to die
This also showed me the impact of how Emet-Selch changed from how he was when we met him in Elpis. Right before he had his memory wiped he tells the WOL he would never lead such a horrible path of pain. Then after he watched Hythlodeaus wave and walk away, knowing what he is about to do, every single part of his soul just dies. Honestly I think both of them are fit for the best friend spot. But Hythlodaeus gave me so much joy in EW. Everything about him made you want to see more and more of him.
I particularly like the face Hythlodeus makes right after Hades denies he would ever do such things. As someone else pointed out, it looks like for all Hades denies it, one of his best friends does believe he could do so.
Alisae will always be my favourite. She humanizes us at so many points in ways that many games would not. We aren't just a hero undaunted to her but instead a person who happens to also have power. She's like our own little sister in many ways.
Yes! Like in the end, her crying "why her/him?!" For the WoL to endure so much and now lose the twins too. She really hit me there and I loved how the writers humanized the WoL by the way of Alisae like that. They didn't make the WoL out like most games do into an unfeeling, go getter of a hero who doesn't stop to think about the sacrifice and losses. They did a similar thing when Vitra talked to the WoL about how your comrades also walk your path and have consequences from your path as well.
When Alisae first showed up, I rolled my eyes because she felt forced initially. But within like 10 quests she became one of my favorites, she's written and voiced SO WELL. She's the most human out of the scions I think.
is it me or does Hythlodaeus and Hades sound like a old married couple? But jokes aside, we all need a Hythlodaeus in our life, a friend who is there for you and make sure you're the best version of yourself. No wonder why Emet fell so far when Hythlodaeus sacrifice himself.
@@StoutHelm It's so good, I love the fact ff14 has it that if you know what is going on and play ARR, some reason they don't seem like ramblings of mad men, just people who are desperate to bring their friends and family back.
Now I kinda wish we get to see the other third wheel in action as well. I think canonically hythlodaeus, Emet Selch, and Azem had many many adventures together. I think if her character is anything similar to yours, that would be such a nice story to explore.
I cried at Hythlodaeus’s sacrifice the most in EW. I knew if Azem or Emet could, they would do the same for Hythlodaeus (which to die in his place) and that was why Emet chose not to stop Hythlodaeus. Thus making Emet’s grief and Azem’s reincanetion became much much more heart-breaking in my opinion.
"Supporting them will be my greatest contribution to this star and when they have fulfilled their purpose, so too will I have fulfilled mine and together we will return to the star." Definitely one of the best characters in the game.
2:08 WOL and ardbert looking at each other now knowing they are fragments of the same person. WoL: "I got the souls good looks apparently" Ardbert: "And I got it's intelligence" WoL: "And I got it's ability to not accidentally kill it's loved ones in a flood of light" Ardbert: "And you got the being a huge dick part of the soul too... seriously too soon" WoL: "It's been a hundred years" Ardbert: "Fair point..."
Our New Old Friend was definitely one of the most likeable characters to have come out of Shadowbringers and expanded upon in Endwalker. It's no wonder Emet-Selch turned down the evil path he did... to have lost the friend he had. And to know that we as the Warrior of Light are their other best friend, Azem... this is all some next level writing.
Emet most likely kept going the way he did because he saw back then how Azem couldn't do anything. Azem was a hero back then ( the person who saves the hour by taking a ridiculous and yet brave risk and who makes friends everywhere they go )and yet was powerless to stop the Final Days. If a hero couldn't protect anyone, it was only logical that in despair Emet would try to ask the help of a God-like entity. Emet even says it himself that " his world won't need heroes " because he doesn't want to lose Azem again because why let Azem risk their live when you can ask Zodiark to save them all ?
@@randomstreamer2868 I love that line. it doesn't feel like a lot of people pick up on the fact that he's not saying it as an actual taunt but talking about Azem's constant putting themself at risk
@@randomstreamer2868 damn, that Azem seat can truly only be filled by the craziest of individuals 😂 willing to do the big sacrifice… i wonder, if Venat hadn;t stepped up when she did, would us Azem have done something?
Also all his hate for Hydaelyn. Not only did Hydaelyn stop him from being able to bring back Hythlodaeus, but Hydaelyn sundering the world effectively killed Azem as well and scattered her/him across all the realities. The Rejoining is the only way to get BOTH back, but even then would you still really be Azem? Your soul would be whole again, but you are already reborn as 'someone else'.
@kieragreywolf546 also whose to say Azem won't remember everything emet and the other acians did? It would be quite likely that Azem wouldn't be able to forgive them.
I love Hythlodaeus so much!! He became one of my favorite characters ever! Here's a little fun fact! Yoshi-P mentions when approving Hythlodaeus’ character art, he asked the staff if he looked a bit too young. He views him as a more experienced yet mischievous adult. Out of the Ancients, Hythlodaeus is perhaps the most irresponsible so much so that it’s scary.
The fact that the person in charge of approving all the animal concepts was described as "dangerously irresponsible" goes a long way towards explaining some of the wacky shit we've had to fight along the way. I occasionally come across a mob and think "Yeah, this seems like something Hyth would approve" lmao
@@BeccaLovesSRK It's so funny but I recently learned in the 87 dungeon trust that Hyth will shout, "I'm not approving that!" while in combat. It's hard to hear with everything going on but it happened with my friend. Haha Hyth probably approved a lot of stuff for lolsXD
Hythlodaeus is such a great bro my brain keeps asking ‘omg, what if Haurchefant was Hythlodaeus’s sundered reincarnation!?’ Before I have to remind myself, gently, that it isn’t possible since Hyth was never sundered.
Hyth's shade came for my heart with a baseball bat back in shadowbringers - the offhanded mention that the mere *though* of him was enough to screw up the phantom Amaruot singlehandedly changed my opinion of Emet-Selch, and when I found out that Hyth wasn't a casualty of the sundering but was, instead, trapped away on the moon, I actually had to put the game down and scream into a pillow because it *completely* recontextualized the end of ShB for me.
Want something that hurts even more? Because Hythlodaeus gave up the title of Emet-Selch, and made Hades take it, he technically saved Hades from being sacrificed for Zodiark, and I can only imagine the amount of guilt Hades feels knowing if that hadn't happened Hythlodaeus would be one of the unsundered, not him.
What I loved the most about Hythlodaeus and how he was written was how everytime we met him, it was always a first time meeting (except for when he handed over the crystals). Almost like 50 First Dates.
A true friend can recognize you for who you are, your flaws, your abilities, and you heart. Hythlodaeus did that in Emet Selch. And he did it in the WoL.
I do love how there is a running trope where in each Expansions, You'll get one Best Friend who gave an impact and lights up on your path till the end. in Realm Reborn,You'll get Minfilia, who given you a proper hom, took you in as a part of her family and not to mention, someone who shares the same power as you do. in Heavensward,You'll get Haurchefant, who gave you shelter where no one could, risked everything so that you get to clear your name and in the end sacrifices his own life to save you and to see you smile. in Stormblood,You'll get Hien,Whom immediately noticed you're a honorable man, always ready to share some sake with you and in the end fights "Zenos" just to buy some time for your arrival. in Shadowbrings,You'll get Ardbert....your only companion and your counterpart whom traveled with you through out an otherwise lonely depressing journey and in the end gave everything he could just to see you succeed and he did. and Finally in Endwalker...You'll get Hythlodaeus,Who turns out to be was your first friend all along and a really important one at that mainly because he's the ONLY one whom instantly recognized your very soul where not a single ancients could. It just shows that him and Azem had a close bond in the past and i hope i get to know more about it in the future. Edit :- Yes,Yes....I forgotten about our most important best friend of all,Zenos The man who gone out of his way and LITEARLLY going into Hyper Drive,Breaking Dimensional Barrier itself on Space all on his own,Just to say Hi to us while shit talks to a literal form of depression itself and 100% believes that we can take it down by ourselves so he's more than happy to be just a platform.. That's the definition of a true bro if i could ever see one.
@@koju-kin not yet, but pretty close, if not of his stalking combat-sexual self-imposed rival nature. He still can become something of a strange friend later though.
Wonderful video, well befitting our 'new old friend' indeed! Another line from Shadowbringers I feel had added weight is also when Emet-Selch poses the question "Do you honestly believe that half your number would sacrifice themselves to save the other." ...It just hits so, so much harder after seeing that moment in the past when Hythlodaeus walks away. Knowing he had such personal, intimate experience with someone literally making that selfless choice right before his eyes.
Thank you friend. And I agree about that question, there’s so many layers to the ancients and these powerful emotional moments that carry intense weight.
Hythlodaeus was one of my favourite characters after Shadowbringers. You have no idea how happy I was when I got up to *that* part in Endwalker. From the first time we meet him he feels so warm and welcoming.
Honestly watching this makes me understand the ideals of the ancients so much more as a whole. Many people ask the question, "But what would you even do if you could live forever?" And they straight up just live by the idea that you do the best you can for the world, and then move on so that someone else can do the same. I have no idea how they managed to form a story and conclusion I enjoyed more than I did Shadowbringers, but damn was it good.
@@StoutHelm Indeed. There were certainly things I liked more in Shadownbringers, but the way they tied everything together in endwalker was just pure genius! The little reservations I went into endwalker with because I truly didn't expect it to be as good as Shadowbringers has completely removed any doubt I may have had and now I have very high hopes for the future as well.
The cutscene where hythlodeaus visits you while you are sleeping I think is very interesting and leaves a way for him to come back in the story. He sounded so happy when, in his words, that he finally found you.
I’m hoping our new, old friends are summoned back for something in the future, even if it is just to see them again/show them some strange thing we found.
Hythlodaeus is a great friend, yes, among the best. But Emet is still, imo, the greatest. He had worked 12k years tirelessly to bring back his people and Hythlodaeus. He even mentioned his ideal is invincible. Yet, upon seeing the WoL, what did he do? He dropped all that and worked so we could succeed in the end. He willingly sacrificed himself and passed on the torch to someone he said wasn't worthy to inherit the Star. His belief and love for us trumps even his own invincible ideals. And that made him the greatest friend in Final Fantasy, if not the greatest in any media.
While all of that is true, Emet falls more under the villain category. That being said, he’s the best villain in the game, and a contender for the best in the whole franchise
Emet-Selch did not willingly pass on the torch. He worked with us and observed us throughout Shadowbringers to see if we were worthy and we were found lacking. Most of Shadowbringers leading up to Amaurot was a test that we *failed*. We could never live up to his standards, of course, but he would have killed us if we were weaker. Or let us turn into a Lightwarden if not for Ardbert and G'raha. "Remember that we once lived" was a dying man's final request. He first truly accepts us in Endwalker as Hermes wipes his memories: "Do not squander it. The legacy I leave you". Later, in Ultima Thule, Emet reflects on our confrontation in Shadowbringers: "The future you seek is not the past we loved. That is why we fought". Only in Endwalker did he begin to understand that we were not lesser beings. Before then? He didn't even see us as truly alive. 12,000 years of grief and duty blinded him to any other option but Rejoining.
@@RenaShirow Hard disagree. Emet-Selch did not fully realize we were Azem until our final confrontation when we fused with Ardbert. And he *refused* to see us as such. Denied it as "a trick of the light", calling us "a broken husk". The WoL was hardly the only reason he approached the Scions in Shadowbringers. G'raha was his other person of interest, as without him, the Scions wouldn't have been on the First to derail the Rejoining to begin with. Azem's soul or not, Emet wanted to see if there was a compromise to be made since Lahabrea demonstrated that simply killing us is not as easy as it'd seem. He did not trust us. He did not like us. He did not accept us. He did not consider us alive. Trust in Azem only comes after his defeat.
@@jedimasterpickle3 Nope reread ALL his lines in Shadowbringers... he was in denial conciously because went against his great purpose. Basically he was having mental breakdown unless he compartmentalized because he knew he set on a path that could lead to our destruction and if he thought about that since he knew who were from soul color he'd've been ready for the funny farm. Especially at the Lift he reminisces with us then gets the sad "not that you'd remember"
@@Ladywizard Yeah, it was only recently when I re-watched a streamer playing through ShB, that I remembered Emet observes the WoL on the First (before introducing himself) and refers to the color of their soul...so he knows, I think he just doesn't want to accept it. Or perhaps doesn't want to accept that he and Azem (in whatever capacity) have to be adversarial again (after Azem leaving the Convocation). It's all very sad.
Please let Hythalodaeus make a return in the future. Yeah, Emet-Selch is great, but I felt more comfort in seeing Hythalodaeus. Reminded me of an old friend who I sadly lost contact with
Hythlodaeus is for sure Emet's greatest friend and probably the complete Azem's. For the WoL, I feel the ones that really tried to connect on a deeper level were Hauchefant, Ardbert, and Zenos. Hauchefant recognized the loneliness that being raised up as a hero brings as you lose the ability to easily connect to others. Ardbert knows the pain that can come from being a hero even better than us. And then there's Zenos who doesn't care about titles, his or yours, he wants to connect on a deeper level, he wants to connect with the adventurer we are deep down, he greets us at the end of the world when our time as the warrior of light is finally over and gives us the catharsis we deeply needed and the smile returns. I know that final battle has mixed reviews, but it worked for me and turned Zenos from a combat sexual prince with an unhealthy obsession to someone that understands our desires and the growing frustrations when the destiny before us taints the experience. The encounter with him on the moon is the only time I can remember where someone saw what they wanted from us was not what we wanted it and respectfully came back later when our heart could be properly in it. A side note that I really enjoyed in the writing was viator means traveler as does Azem since that is the seat of the traveler and all other titles for each of us were gone at the end so it was just two travelers of equal title slugging it out at the end of everything. He was a horrible monster but, I feel like in those last moments he was our greatest friend.
I LOVE everything you wrote, but I respectfully disagree with him being labelled a friend. He is very polite and cordial with WoL, but he's not a friend. He is out to get what he wants, not to aid you without benefit. A friend must give of themselves without thought of gain, Zenos never once does that. Everything he does is in service of gaining a battle with WoL when they are free of distraction and greater purpose. Zenos is one of the most interesting and fun characters, and is written pretty well, but I don't think he's a friend, let alone a BF.
Also unlike Venat and Hades in the Trust dungeon, Hythlodeus can only be a bard/archer while the other two can be a form of tank/white mage/ black mage, these super big flashy classes and he plays a more humble support job.
Really mind blew me when you end up connecting on why he calls you new/old friend, its because once you die you remember everything that you forgot which was explained in Sharlayan so Hythlodeaus remembers us when he met us in Amourot since he passed already back then and remembers our escapade on elpis with him.
2:10 minor correction here: "Ascian" refers only to those who joined the Ascian cult that formed post-sundering. Azem could never have been a member at any time.
I love him!!! I loved him back in SB when we were his “new old” friend. There was something about that character that stuck with me and I pretty much cried when I realized we would get to do part of the MSQ with him. I also think Emet allowed Hythlodaeus’s shade to be self aware due to their friendship
When their minds were wiped of all events that occured at Elpis. I was devastated cause you the player are the one who destroyed Emet and now you know how much of a friend he was too you. The hindsight is truly painful. That moment when you are on Argos flying away after the dungeon there. You hear him say "Do not squander it. This legacy I leave". And then you reach out to him in sadness before going through the portal. It was pain man...
Like I once said to a friend who play FFXIV too, we all need and Hythlodaeus in our life and we all need to be the Hythlodaeus for another person too, it would settle so many things
I see a lot of Judeau from Berserk in Hythlodaeus. The ultimate supporting character whose purpose is to raise up those around him. Both are so beloved for damn good reason.
I loved Hytholodeus as a shade already and that love only grew. Though I have to admit, I have a weak spot for Emet as well. Acting tough as nails but actually a sweet pushover when it comes to his friends.
I really do hope we meet our new old friends eventually. Be it on the shores of Meracydia or the Slumbering Dark of the thirteenth reflection. Perhaps, maybe, as fellow scions? If not simply adventurers.
@@OurHereafter Same here! And if you did all the role quests in Shadowbringers, they pretty much confirm that is actually going to be a thing at some point.
The ability to self release makes sense in context. The Amurotians were gifted long lives and near immortality. Only disease and critical harm could ones life be terminated that way, since age and infeeblement had no meaning.
@@StoutHelm Hermies had deep seeded psychological issues. He hid them rather well from the first head of Elpis. Had his psychological issues showed up in the screening process he would have been judged unfit. Everything the Amurotians did, the conclave to the myriad of beauros was done for the sake of conservation of the star. Meaning that there was a complete understanding that while the planet was unnaturally dense in Aether, that resource also needed to be conserved. Hermies valued life so much, that he was more than willing to allow harm to the star with the missteps as caretaker (seen in that one msq chain and the level 87 dungeon...if you do the Trust). That is what ultimately made him create Metrion and the other star bird probes behind the Beauro of Architec back. He needed a 3rd opinion to validate his point of view. To prove that the way the Conclave was doing things was wrong. Yet he refused the old wisdom, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. It's sort of how...we as a species must answer this question. Is there life out among the starts? If yes...are we ready to jump into the interstellar community. If no, are we OK in understanding that we are a proverbial fluke in our galaxy.
@@everyonethinksyoureadeathm5773 From doing a side quest in Elpis you learn that while you can create things your creation cannot be allowed to travel on it's own until you get special permission. Which is something Hermes did not do but I remember someone saying how since he was Chief Overseer of Elpis he gave himself that special permission. But the fact remains he did not submit Meteion nor her sisters to the Bureau of the Architect which is a major red flag. Hyth even comments on not recognizing her concept. Had Hermes submitted her I 110% firmly believe Hythlodaeus would have rejected it's approval.
@@acgearsandarms1343 It's to test how they will act in the environment of Etheirys, how they will get along with other creatures. Once a concept is finalized it's presented before the Bureau of the Architect to be approved and thus released onto the star. All concepts have to go through the Bureau first. (I just read your question again and short answer is yes it is to test them. Sorry I just woke up and I don't feel like deleting all I wrote haha) But keep in mind Meteion was a personal project for Hermes, one he released into the sea of stars without a fail safe of any kind. That and since all ancients are emotionally stunted, Hermes I think didn't realize what would happen should Meteion encounter a world(s) that were not happy/perfect like Etheirys. This is why the Bureau is very important! Presented before them I feel they would have been able to detect Meteion's shortcomings(idk if that's the word I wanna use) Long tangent haha sorry, I'll end it here.
One of my favorite quotes in the game is when you click on his portrait for the dungeon, and he says "I can...scarcely contain my excitement." IT IS THE BEST MY EARS AAAHHHHHHHH
Alphinaud is my Hythlodaeus. He has his flaws but in the end he basically did the same thing lol. But that aside, I loved Hytlo the moment we met him in ShB and I was hoping to meet him again! Thank SE for this tid bit of fanservice Q//Q
@@StoutHelm Amen 100% agree. He has been with us since ARR, gone through so much developement and in the end only thought about us and the world...so selfless and brave...a true Hythlodaeus indeed!
1 year later response but I agree so much. I love all of the ancients, they're one of my absolute favorite characters (be it the trio or Themis) but Alphinaud hits differently. I think the writers shoved him aside in favor of Alisaie, especially in Endwalker but Heavensward was the pinnacle of his growth, together with Shadowbringers (the little tidbits of banter you get with your WoL and Alphinaud immediately teleported me back to Heavensward times) He has such a good character ark and his steadfast belief in the WoL never falters for one second. And when he cried at the end of Endwalker, good lord did that make me tear up as well. Alphinaud is great, just wish they would give him more moments with the WoL as they constantly do with Alisaie
Hythlodaeus is a fantastic friend, but I think the title of the BEST friend has to go to G'raha. Dude has the biggest heart and is so selfless and despite having dreams of his own is willing to sacrifice them time and time again for the sake of those around him. I'd love to see you make a video on G'raha!
Hythlodaeus and Hades are such opposite twins that I can't help but believe in the theory that they are Nald'thal, or that it is based on them. Having them both nominated for the seat of Emet-Selch, which oversees the Aetherial Sea (aka the Underworld), only makes them more fit for the god of life and death, especially when you consider that Nald'thal lives in the Hell of Fire, whereas the Heaven of Fire is kept by Azeyma, keeping the trio together.
Hythlodaeus is honestly one of the best characters to come out of Endwalker, he's the best friend we all need to balance out Emets cold logic and Azem's reckless enthusiasm. Plus he's just so darn sweet!
I unironically think so ... Personally he's a top replacement for the friends (Hades and Hythlo) that the WoL lost. Unlike the Scions, Zenos doesn't see the WoL as the WoL. It's refreshing. He doesn't want for the WoL like the Scions do. His social skills leave much to be desired. He's done "bad" things as a soldier and sat idle when even worse things to happened during his time with Fandaniel. But without Zenos Black Rose would have been in play. He went to the END of the universe to help the WoL's ass. He brought hope when all seemed hopeless. After the final duty he finally got to talk openly. It was a chance to see another side of him, if you paid any attention or gave thought to his words. Zenos appears to be growing as a character. Everytime he "dies" a part of him develops. imo he's a phoenix.
He was my favorite from the first time I met him. Sitting on that bench with my character and after the entire city of shades just being so inhuman. It was endearing.
Damn, that FFXI music right off the bat lol. When it started playing, I was like "I KNOW THIS THEME..." but then I was like ".... from where?" and I started searching FFXIV memories and then it hit me... it ain't XIV, it's _XI_ music.
I love Hythlodeus and I'm glad your video brought more attention to his significance in the main story. Not to mention bringing the context of his loss to Hades's character to my attention, so thank you. But one small thing the afterlife in FFXIV is referred to as the Aetherial Sea, or sometimes the Underworld by the Ancients, and not the Sea of Stars which is what outer space is called
I LOVE Hythlodaeus. He and Emet are my favourite of the Ancients. Their friendship gave a much needed lightheartedness in an otherwise rather heavy expansion. Their constant sassing of each other is just amazing.
I am really looking forward to doing new game plus and there are so many other things i want to experience with knowing all (need sidequests and all before knowing all still) but this is one of the strongest piece of information. I want to read and listen to every word of Emet-Selch with all I know now. I had been suspicious until a certain point in Shb and I felt ashamed when i did. And I love Hythlodaeus. I faced every ordeal as Wol but along with scions, he was one person who helped me really in time of desperate emotions. I like Venat most then Hythlodaeus (She had been believing me like eons and did all that) and Emet with scions. Thanks for this video. I really enjoyed this and God I love this game.
I love Hyth so much. T^T When I found out on the moon he had sacrificed himself I lost it. Hyth is also the only one who ever calls Emet-Selch by his name, Hades, in that one cutscene. (I wanted so badly to have a moment to call Emet-Selch by his name. T^T) All of this was so good. Great recap vid!
If I remember correctly the recreation of him says some like "This place is created by his memory of it maybe why I understand everything is because he remembers me as someone who could see through such a trick."
Ever since meeting Hythlodaeus in Amaurot I have called him big friend. After meeting him in Elpis he became big hot friend. Both ways, he's always been the best friend. Such an amazingly lovable character.
I think I'd be pretty upset if the next story arc was not you, hades and hythlodaeus travelling either in another world or another lifetime. While I'm certain ff14 wouldn't need this crutch, but lore wise, it is a very easy way to establish companions very quickly. "Bound by fate, we meet in another time, another space. Reborn of the same souls of the ancients"
@@RuneKatashima I agree, this is the end of the hydaelyn arc. But it would also be a shame to completely abandon the ancients so soon, especially given their popularity as actual characters
After reading the short story and witnessing Endwalker, Azem, Hythlodaeus, and Hades are your basic three friend group. Azem has the crazy ideas, Hythlodaeus enables the crazy ideas, and Hades is the one who keeps them all out of jail. One thing you also didn't cover, which undoubtedly added to Hades's pain is that Hythlodaeus was the ONLY friend he had left at that moment. Azem had turned their back on the Convocation...on him. So he was now dealing with the loss of BOTH of his dearest friends. I think it's also not only why he gave us that chance in Shadowbringers and why he became so unhinged when we failed his test. For a moment he had hope that he could have one of his friends back in some form and we failed him.
@@StoutHelm You did. I just feel that a lot of people tend to overlook how close Emet was to Azem. Multiple npcs mention how Emet can never refuse a call of help from Azem. Thinking back, talking about that facet in this video probably would end up a distraction since it is about Hythlodaeus.
I do wonder if perhaps a little bit of Hythlodaeus found its way into Urianger, while very different people I can't but feel both of them to be very similar in their resolve to help their friends.
I really hope we get to meet Hythlodaeus & Emet-Selch again at some point. Still, until that day, me and some friends did what we feel is the best way to honor them: On the Aether Data Center is a fellowship called The New Convocation of 14. We only have half the seats filled at this point, but we'll fill them eventually. And while the Scions are disbanded, we shall take up the original Convocation's task as stewards of the star (and beyond) from the shadows: "To honor the legacy & continue the work of the original Convocation while learning from their mistakes. To seek not perfection, but rather continuous improvement."
This is really a great video! I love your analyze about Hythlodaeus and yes he is truly one of the best friends you could imagine. Emet is for azem and hythlo in a similar spot, but for the shadred WOL was he more like a judgment who wanted to see if we can continue his legacy - so yeah I think haurchefant and graha are propably my choices next to hythlo who are the best friends for the WOL. Haurchefant was the only one who supported us in our first dark hour between realm reborn and heavensward (next to the scions of cause) and didn't think twice to protect us from the lightspear and graha did so much in his life to help our world and us. But than again the personalitys of those two are propably the most similars to hythlos.
I think from a Utilitarian pov Hythlodaeus is indeed the ultimate friend. But he's not ours, necessarily. Haurchefant and Graha Tia (even more so) take that role. And, despite the atrocities that he would commit, that he would even go for as long and as far as he did, Hades is an incredible friend (to his people and Hythlodaeus). And Estinien is a bro, i wouldn't put him at all on the level of these others, but he'd absolutely die with you and for you if it called for it. But I think that puts him at the same level as any Scion, bar technically Graha.
Hythlodaeus is Emet-Selch's Haurchefant. No wonder Emet-Selch did what he did for so long...
Now here’s a connection I hadn’t made but makes a good deal of sense.
@@StoutHelm The way he encourages Emet-Selch not to be so negective all the time, I was waiting for him to suggest a smile better suits him.
When I met Hythlodaeus, I said "I get it. I will burn it all down to save this man."
Truth.
I just want to put here a thing that I read:
The good part is that now Emet-Selch is with Hythlodaeus for eternity.
The bad part is that now Emet-Selch is with Hythlodaeus for eternity.
Emet will act like he dreads it but in reality he’s probably overjoyed by being back with his friend after so long.
I can just imagine Hythlodaeus wasting no time roasting Hades in the most charmingly Hythlodaeus way.😂
Reminds me of a fanart where the two were in the sea of stars, and Hytlodaeus was making fun of poor Emet-Selch, the latter seriously having regrets and wondering what he did to deserve that XD
Hylthlodaeous: oh you wound me….surely it can’t be that bad. Venat is with us as well….(chuckles)

I was totally willing to negotiate for a replacement of some of the scions, ngl. Like, I'd gladly take Hythlodaeus and Hades over Urianger, Y'shtola, and Thancred at the very least. I'd even consider the twins. But I'm keeping G'raha and Estinien.
@@cassandratremblay5802 sorry, but Estinien comes with Alphinaud! It's a bundle deal XD
YES, Estinien forever.
I loved Hythlodaeus. I can totally understand why Emet was so broken by his death he recreated Amaurot and it’s citizens. He was overwhelmed by the pain of losing his friend that it affected the shade. Now we know why Emet wanted to return to the past to be with his friend once more.
Exactly. Hythlodaeus plays a big part in why Emet is such a compelling character.
He’s definitely up there. A fan and personal favorite.
The lords of Lakeland have returned!
Out of all the boys, he is best boy. Estinien is best bro.
YES
Graha is best boi for sure. Cute, Tenacious, Awkward yet Charming af 🥰
Everyone was excited for Emet-Selch at first, but Hythlodaeus I think stole everyone's hearts with how lovable he is.
I agree. Between the two I like him just a bit bettee
He sees us as an imperfect version of a close friend, but our soul belongs to Azem all the same
It’s heavily implied the three of them were super close based on conversations with Hyth and Emet. I’m
Spoilers for 6.0 MSQ Follow:
I believe this is directly referenced at the end of Ultima Thule, when Emet closes his reveal of the unresolved mysteries left on Ethyris with:
"As the holder of the [Title] Azem, you should consider it your duty to see that much.
I know I did."
His final statement provides basis for a strong inference that Emet had completed all the previously described investigations, and likely under his mission to recreate or contribute to the original experiences of his friend Azem, and in that moment fully recognizes you as one and the same people, especially with that warm, gentle smile just before he leaves.
@@Xaivius Emnet had me when he mentioned the true identity of The Twelve. I fully embraced the title of Azem, if anything, to see that mystery uncovered.
@@Xaivius exactly. Emet spent all that time and effort out of respect for his friend. He’s a real one
Well said
Nah I think he knows how to balance it because he knows our buttons as well because Azem is Azem no matter his/her era and he knows anger is usually not what you want outta Azem unless you're ready to die
That scene is huge. Part of what makes Emet so interesting.
She’s definitely one of the best.
The part when she throws all caution to the wind and screams at Zenos telling him his selfish ways will be his undoing literally moved me to tears
I love their chemistry.
I think if her character is anything similar to yours, that would be such a nice story to explore.
literally the first thing you hear him say to him at the start of the elpis story is "won't you grace us with your handsome face?"
Like Zenos
I cried at Hythlodaeus’s sacrifice the most in EW. I knew if Azem or Emet could, they would do the same for Hythlodaeus (which to die in his place) and that was why Emet chose not to stop Hythlodaeus. Thus making Emet’s grief and Azem’s reincanetion became much much more heart-breaking in my opinion.

Haurch was too good for this world.
It just goes to show how lucky the WoL is, to have *two* such good friends in their lives... :,)
I hadn’t thought of it that way until now, but you’re right.
A true friend can recognize you for who you are, your flaws, your abilities, and you heart. Hythlodaeus did that in Emet Selch. And he did it in the WoL.
That’s why he’s one of the greats.

in Heavensward,You'll get Haurchefant, who gave you shelter where no one could, risked everything so that you get to clear your name and in the end sacrifices his own life to save you and to see you smile.
in Stormblood,You'll get Hien,Whom immediately noticed you're a honorable man, always ready to share some sake with you and in the end fights "Zenos" just to buy some time for your arrival.
in Shadowbrings,You'll get Ardbert....your only companion and your counterpart whom traveled with you through out an otherwise lonely depressing journey and in the end gave everything he could just to see you succeed and he did.
and Finally in Endwalker...You'll get Hythlodaeus,Who turns out to be was your first friend all along and a really important one at that mainly because he's the ONLY one whom instantly recognized your very soul where not a single ancients could. It just shows that him and Azem had a close bond in the past and i hope i get to know more about it in the future.

Another line from Shadowbringers I feel had added weight is also when Emet-Selch poses the question
"Do you honestly believe that half your number would sacrifice themselves to save the other."
...It just hits so, so much harder after seeing that moment in the past when Hythlodaeus walks away.
They’re both very close, Endwalker and shadowbringers. Both are phenomenal stories. I have very high hopes for the future.

Reminded me of an old friend who I sadly lost contact with
He’s the better of the two.
i instantly liked hythlodeus the moment i saw him. great voice actors and great script and directing.
That title change is part of the speculation that Zenos is an Azem shard that somehow made his way to the Source. Which is super interesting.
He clowns on himself in the dungeon too, openly wondering why he gets to use the limit break over everyone else in the party.
As a BRD main, I agree
“I trust it will be a most joyous reunion” Yessss SE, pleaseeee, im not ready to leave Hythlo and Emet
Really mind blew me when you end up connecting on why he calls you new/old friend, its because once you die you remember everything that you forgot which was explained in Sharlayan so Hythlodeaus remembers us when he met us in Amourot since he passed already back then and remembers our escapade on elpis with him.
Exactly. He was waiting for so long for us to finally show up. He could see why Emet-Selch relented even in death.
2:10 minor correction here: "Ascian" refers only to those who joined the Ascian cult that formed post-sundering.
Azem could never have been a member at any time.
My bad, misspoke during that part of the script.
It was pain man...
he's our old, new, old friend
Like I once said to a friend who play FFXIV too, we all need and Hythlodaeus in our life and we all need to be the Hythlodaeus for another person too, it would settle so many things
Well said.
I see a lot of Judeau from Berserk in Hythlodaeus. The ultimate supporting character whose purpose is to raise up those around him. Both are so beloved for damn good reason.
I’m not super familiar with Berserk but I’ll definitely take your word for it.
@@StoutHelm ruclips.net/video/MKMxVyurYoA/видео.html
I loved Hytholodeus as a shade already and that love only grew. Though I have to admit, I have a weak spot for Emet as well. Acting tough as nails but actually a sweet pushover when it comes to his friends.
Emet is GOATed, you’re not alone in feeling that way.
I really do hope we meet our new old friends eventually. Be it on the shores of Meracydia or the Slumbering Dark of the thirteenth reflection. Perhaps, maybe, as fellow scions? If not simply adventurers.

The ability to self release makes sense in context. The Amurotians were gifted long lives and near immortality. Only disease and critical harm could ones life be terminated that way, since age and infeeblement had no meaning.
Makes total sense in the big picture but I also understand why Hermes wouldn’t like it.
@@kaylaroo710 Forgive me but isn’t the point of Elpis to test creations before they’re ready for approval?
I really appreciate the use of FFXI's music in these videos.
The soundtrack is SO COMFY. I poured way too much time into that game in my early years.
I noticed that, too! 🥰
Alphi is goated.
I like to call him my "Old, New Friend"
Hythlodaeus is a fantastic friend, but I think the title of the BEST friend has to go to G'raha. Dude has the biggest heart and is so selfless and despite having dreams of his own is willing to sacrifice them time and time again for the sake of those around him.
I'd love to see you make a video on G'raha!
Hythleodeus is amazing friend. Emet is big daddy. And venet is like the protective mommy. Together they are our family of ancients.
He really is one of the best.
Zenos is actually our best friend! /s
In his mind!
he came back from the dead to defeat the unfair threat of black rose you were powerless to stop and flew across the universe to help you save it.
I'm here as a Hythlo simp, will write an essay another time
Your spot is saved
One half of the best Comedic Duo in all FFXIV!
He is the bestest friend one can get.
Agreed!
Everyone needs a friend like Hythlodaeus.
Damn right.
He was my favorite from the first time I met him. Sitting on that bench with my character and after the entire city of shades just being so inhuman. It was endearing.
Always likable even before he had a voice we could understand.
Hyth believed that Hades was the thing the world needed most.
As did Haurchefant.
The damned smile.
Damn, that FFXI music right off the bat lol. When it started playing, I was like "I KNOW THIS THEME..." but then I was like ".... from where?" and I started searching FFXIV memories and then it hit me... it ain't XIV, it's _XI_ music.
He gives Haurchefaunt a run for his gil if anything, but regardless, both of them are best bois of the game
Yeah I’ve had others point out that error for me. Sorry about that
Better than any friend I ever had in real life thats why I love this game
I LOVE Hythlodaeus. He and Emet are my favourite of the Ancients. Their friendship gave a much needed lightheartedness in an otherwise rather heavy expansion. Their constant sassing of each other is just amazing.
Yes, their chemistry is phenomenal! Part of what makes that chapter of the story so good.

Everytime you show that picture, my eyes auto-cry.

All of this was so good. Great recap vid!
If I remember correctly the recreation of him says some like "This place is created by his memory of it maybe why I understand everything is because he remembers me as someone who could see through such a trick."
That’s right!

Oh they’ll come back. But I hope we wait awhile. I want to just explore the world and go on an adventure again!
Eh, I don't think they're going to make us revisit the ancients so soon. I think they want to have us start a new story.

I thought I mentioned that Azem had refused his offer in this video?
@@StoutHelm You did. I just feel that a lot of people tend to overlook how close Emet was to Azem. Multiple npcs mention how Emet can never refuse a call of help from Azem.
Thinking back, talking about that facet in this video probably would end up a distraction since it is about Hythlodaeus.
@@Ashtari very very close. When I get around to covering Emet on his own, those close friendships will definitely be explored more.
Now that I think about it maybe it wasn't a mistake. It's possible hytho served as the part of emets subconscious that forgot the events of elpis.
I do wonder if perhaps a little bit of Hythlodaeus found its way into Urianger, while very different people I can't but feel both of them to be very similar in their resolve to help their friends.
I could see that. They do share some mannerisms.
The best part is that in the Japanese version he is voiced by the same VA as Akechi Goro from Persona 5. It was quite the trip. :D

And while the Scions are disbanded, we shall take up the original Convocation's task as stewards of the star (and beyond) from the shadows:
"To honor the legacy & continue the work of the original Convocation while learning from their mistakes. To seek not perfection, but rather continuous improvement."

When we first get to Elpis and see Hythlodaeus for the first time properly, my first reaction was
"Oh fuck, he's hot!"
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Can’t pronounce his name for the life of me, but I love him.
He’s one of the greats.
everyone needs a friend like Hythlodaeus in their life.
Him and Haurchefant would've loved each other
I think from a Utilitarian pov Hythlodaeus is indeed the ultimate friend.
I love Hythlo so much, he reminds me of my significant other
Sounds like you’ve got a good one
